Worst. President. Ever.

By Nico Pitney on Feb 16th, 2007 at 8:08 pm

Worst. President. Ever.

Atrios points us to this commentary by USA Today founder Al Neuharth: “A year ago I criticized Hillary Clinton for saying ‘this (Bush) administration will go down in history as one of the worst.’ ‘She’s wrong,’ I wrote. Then I rated these five presidents, in this order, as the worst: Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan, Ulysses Grant, Hoover and Richard Nixon. ‘It’s very unlikely Bush can crack that list,’ I added. I was wrong. This is my mea culpa. Not only has Bush cracked that list, but he is planted firmly at the top.”

I used to think Bush supporters were just stupid…well that very well may be true, but I think a lot of them are just foolish and very slow learners rather than just simply being stupid.

It’s like they have an inability (or disability) to ask questions when they are confronted with lies. It really is easier to just believe everything you hear on the tv and radio, but if you do that it makes nothing in life worth fighting for. I’d rather have the truth.

  13. Marie says:

Most of us here would agree that George Bush will go down in history as the worst president in our country’s history.
There is small consolation in being correct.
We are stuck in the hole he has dug and dropped us into; and we are looking at two more years before we can begin to crawl out of it.

Not only the worst…but chief of the most malignant administration in the history of this country. The damage Bush, Chaney and their henchmen criminals have inflicted and continue to inflict on this nation and its people will be longlasting, if not permanent. There are some injuries to the body public that never heal.
The fact that these vermin can get selected/elected to the highest levels of government has convinced me that it is time to leave the U.S. as it is rotten to the core. I am heading for other less politically poluted (one hopes) lands, along with my sons and grandchildren. I will abandon my citizenship at the earliest possible date.

  25. Luke says:

I’m absolutely amazed that Warren G. Harding, who is on just about every presidential scholar’s list of awful U.S. presidents, didn’t crack this guy’s top five. Makes me skeptical that he knows what the heck he’s talking about. Then again, it’s hard to argue with Andrew Jackson, Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon, and James Buchanan. I cut Grant a little bit of slack because of the nearly impossible situation he was handed, and because he was at least a competent general.

Bush will take his place alongside Harding, Nixon, Buchanan, Jackson, and Hoover. Bush might get the edge for the unique combination of incompetence, arrogance, corruption, despotism, and colossal stupidity that has characterized his administration. Other presidents have had some of these qualities, but Bush might be the first to possess ALL of them.

all what you see me post is a direct reflection of what i’ve learned on

and if not posted on think progress, then i’ve simply related on think progress what has been posted on rense, truthout, bushwatch, alternet,

about posted on other domains… and i do everything in my power to
stay away from the propanganda, commercial or biased publicity with
a motive behind it…. absolutely corruption IS a reality and just a couple
of years ago i really believed sure it occured, but it was a rarity.

it certainly appears the 109th and Bush opened up those blinders and
now i understand quite a bit more than a couple of years ago.

i also think that in the future don’t want to hear nothin about all the
rah rah’s cause guess what…….. the promises aren’t kept

heard all that kind of stuff – anticorruption – but didn’t understand ethical
and corruption in reality goes on… well lets say it’s definitely not a one

  45. Maven says:

Guess Neuharth thought Warren G. Harding didn’t count, because he didn’t even complete one full term (died in office). But where does he come off listing Andrew JACKson instead of Andrew JOHNson? It was the latter, not the former, who was impeached.

  46. JPark says:

Maven, I noticed that too. However, not sure exactly what your point is. Is it to throw up dust?

  47. Luke says:

#45: But where does he come off listing Andrew JACKson instead of Andrew JOHNson? It was the latter, not the former, who was impeached.

I don’t know what Neuharth was thinking, but I’d give Andrew Jackson a pretty low rating for signing the Indian Removal Act and, subsequently, his responsibility for the Trail of Tears. While he was undeniably popular and charismatic, he must be judged harshly for his abominable treatment of Native Americans.

  48. Wayne says:

But where does he come off listing Andrew JACKson instead of Andrew JOHNson? It was the latter, not the former, who was impeached.

Andrew Jackson perpetrated the massacre called “The Trail of Tears” in which some of my family tree died in. I think Jackson belongs on that list.

If the illegal central bank (Federal Reserve) were never created, we wouldn’t have GW Bush (the elites practical joke they played on us) for President. Nor would all of our politicians cater only to the needs of the elite bankers as they do today.

Ron Paul is the only politician calling for the Fed to be abolished – something all Americans should be demanding.

Welcome to the new world people. Us Conservatives want OUR MONEYS WORTH out of these “troops” we have deployed in Iraq.

No more sitting around with a thumb up their ass getting paid and getting fat while us Conservatives have to foot the bill. These boys need to get their asses in gear. No more patty cake here. Lets see some results for a change.

We are doing the American taxpayers a great service by DEMANDING the American troops STEP UP TP THE PLATE and give us a better performance.

Although, Bush is a victim of a very COMPLICATED KARMA, he also possessed some scarey credentials that made him the perfect Devil’s Advocate.

Beside been a crud, this Preisdent doesn’t know shit about America, or the Middle-East; and the worst is, this guy doesn’t even know how to cover his own ass from all the shit he’s created.

Well, to admit one thing, everyone expected Bush regime would have tried to plant or manipulate some fake and defunct nukes or WMDs into Iraq, to justify the entire killings, and save the Chimp Exec face, but the President seems to be sorrounded by morons like himself, people who can’t think of redeeming Bush from his imbecility and mess. And the lasting impression Bush & his entire crew give us is: they know how to look for trouble; they know how to get the spoils; they have big mouths and know how to only talk tough; but when it comes to planning, err, fixing their shit, they are 100% non-effficient.

Maybe Bush could still save his face from going down the greasy and dirty drain-pipe of history, that is; if he fires all the crack-heads around him, and start employing people who know what he doesn’t know. But will he? Errr, maybe only after he’s already down the drain of history. Did I forget to mention Stubborness & Vainglory as one of his most intimidating credentials?

  62. JerryTheAngel says:

The voters starting in 1994 proceeded down this dark road of unprecedented incompetence and at the end of the day how can any thinking American be surprised?

Bush 41 who was a Congressman, Ambassador to the UN, head of the CIA, head of the Republican Party and Vice-President for 8 years could only manage one term.

His son comes along who has no policitical resume to speak of, who was an alcoholic until he was age 40, who failed in one oil venture after another and who borders on being mildly retarded when it comes to communicating the English language.

The oilmen of Texas backed this dimwitted horse and their investment paid off big time, by enjoying historical corporate profits. His henchman, DICK Cheney, made sure that his company, Haliburton, topped the list of all war profiteers.

When Cheney says things have gone remarkably well in Iraq he means that as the former CEO of Haliburton, he too rewarded those who raised the amount of money required to win the election in 2000.

The two of them are not only the worst President and Vice-President in the history of the country, they are two of the biggest war criminals to ever walk this planet.

Both of them deserve the same fate as Saddam. They both should be put to death for their war crimes. If Bush turns out to be right about this Christian God that he bows down to, he should be petrified, because he will burn in Hell for eternity for what he has done to the people of Iraq.

Bin Laden approved a pre-emptive strike that resulted in the deaths of 3000 Americans while Bush dwarfs Bin Laden’s attack with his approval of murdering tens of thousands of Iraqis.

Bush and Cheney are two of the biggest terrorists to ever exist in this world.

  71. bushies in jail says:

Not only is Bush the worst president ever, his policies have enacted a shift of wealth to the rich that will take years to normalize. It is quite possible that Cheney, Bush and Cronies have pocketed billions of dollars in “missing” oil in Iraq, but I’m talking less about the obvious grand theft and more about the predatory lending, stock market manipulation and tax loopholes that have allowed financial institutions and hedge funds to pillage vast swaths of middle class wealth. Bush and Co. are purely elitist and consciously enact policy directly opposite of middle class values in order to erase progressive society and return to a feudal system. This will not happen, but the living standards for Americans and the rest of the globe have been set backward by this administration during the most crucial time of interdependence needed to stem overpopulation and global warming.

  72. Ron Paul for pres says:

#54 – Jeez. Ron Paul is NOT SEEKING the Constitution Party nomination. They just said they like him. They also like Tom Tancredo, for some reason, even though he and Paul have very, very little in common. Maybe it’s just because of the single North American Union issue. (Do you want a NA Union? Who does?) But let it be clear that Ron Paul is not seeking out the Constitution Party. He would be more at home in the Libertarian Party where he has been a candidate in the past. I know this site is all about supporting Democrats and Democrats only, but please try to peer outside the regular Dem/Repub construct. What people need to do is read Ron Paul’s statements and look at his voting record.

  73. Bluedog49 says:

Right, right. Ron Paul and the Libertarian Party. Just what we need: more power for corporations. Evidently, the libertarian feels corporations aren’t strong enough in our system. Hmmmm.

I view modern libertarianism as more of a cult or a religion than a political movement because its believers refuse to see the obvious fact that arises from their philosophy: in the absence of government regulation, you may or may not get more liberty, but you always get more powerful corporations. Always. Corporations always rush to fill the void when government is taken out of the equation. We’ve seen this over and over. Today, after 26 years of “conservative libertarian” philosophical ascendance, corporations have unprecedented control over our political process and our society. The gap between rich and poor is larger than at any time since the Guilded Age.

Thomas Jefferson saw it coming: “I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country. ”

Modern “Libertarianism” is simply a scam by which big corporatists trick working class people into believing their interests are the same as theirs using emotional wedge issues like drugs and guns.

  74. Luke says:

#69: All presidents from Washington to the 20th century were harsh on Native Americans.

This is true to a degree, but Jackson was particularly hostile to Native Americans, as evidenced by his signing of the Indian Removal Act.

  75. Luke says:

#64: What a bunch of liars. We all know CLINTON is the worst president ever. Ask yourself, has Bush been impeached? I think not. Clinton has.

So, are you saying that impeachment is your only standard for the quality of a U.S. president? Don’t you think that the disposition of the opposition party is a factor when considering how meaningful an impeachment is?

  76. paul says:

Stood up to jihadists trying to attack our country. Keep us safe from further attack (5+ years) after being drawn into a global war on terror. Best economic performance in a century. Resisted the mudslinging of the left, although it has been the most contentious environment, possibly ever.

Worst President. Hardly. History will remember this President as one of the best. And the Democratic opposition: as the self-serving appeasers they are.

  77. Ron Paul for pres says:

Right, right. Ron Paul and the Libertarian Party. Just what we need: more power for corporations.

Don’t know much about Ron, do you?

And the term “Libertarian” is so broad that people just make up their own definitions to suit their needs at the moment. Here, you just take it to mean “more power to corporations.”

    http://www.newswithviews.com/Yates/steven24.htm

Nor will Ron Paul do the bidding of the corporatist globalists. There is also nothing in the Constitution that empowers the federal government to “partner” with big business, or to supply it with corporate welfare.

He is not swayed, as are the Corporate Democrats and Republicans by special interest groups like military contractors and the big oil companies – He is truly a man of the people and he loves the constitution of the United States. Ron Paul is not an elitist corporate puppet, he represents everything that made this country great.

Paul has been in and out of Congress since the 70’s and is universally hated by the Republican elite, who routinely back Democrats against him just to try and get him out of office.

Keep us safe from further attack (5+ years) after being drawn into a global war on terror.

    Earth to paul:

America’s borders to Mexico (in particular) and Canada…

    …and her ports…

…are and have been wide open…

…look around you paul and tell us ONE place (other than the White(man’s) House, Capitol and Crawford)…

    …where a terrorist car/truck bomb couldn’t easily be parked and detonated…

…visited any of your local schools, or malls lately?

…just because (the media says we haven’t been attacked)…

…were the mall shootings in Utah, fires at a number of refineries/chemical plants (in Texas and around the country), and curious increases in the number of train derailments just coincidences?

    …doesn’t make it so…

…even if these were just coincedences and as you say “they haven’t attacked in five years”…

    …doesn’t mean they can’t…

…and “being drawn into a global war on terror”…

…indicates to me that after blaming Clinton for having done nothing about terrorism…

    …you’re insinuating that had 9/11 not occurred…

    …neither would Bushiva…

…a slip of the old keyboard mayhaps?

    hmmm…food for thought nonetheless…

    Re: Worst. President. Ever.

Far out! When 83 year old Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today (circulation 2,269,509) comes out and says, “I was wrong, and Hilary Clinton was right”, you know Bush has to be in deep doo-doo with the American people.

While Neuharth may have been a bit slow to catch on, it took guts to come out and admit he made a mistake. And according to Wikipedia, he’s been pretty much anti-Iraq war, going back to at least 2004, “when he called in his column for American troops to be brought home from the “ill-advised adventures” in Iraq.” That puts him way ahead of the curve comapred to most his mainstream media peers.

Let’s welcome Neuharth to the fight, instead of kicking his teeth in because he didn’t ‘get’ Bush right off the bat.

    ‘Hilary Clinton was right’

Watch the Hillary YouTube with code pink (minute 7 thru the end) she lays out Bush’s justification for going to war with Iraq better than Bush ever did. She has turned 180 now that the polls reveal flipant Americans can’t stomach war regardless of the consequence. Watch it:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=pYATbsu2cP8

Then you will understand me when I agree with Neuharth: “Hillary was right!”

He could have done something about world hunger:
UNITED NATIONS – Some 18,000 children die every day because of hunger and malnutrition and 850 million people go to bed every night with empty stomachs, a “terrible indictment of the world in 2007,” the head of the U.N. food agency said

Not only is CHIMPya the WORST PRESIDENT EVER, He is also the WORST UN-ELECTED AND ILLEGALLY SELECTED PSEUDO-PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, who cheated his way by illegal means into this sacred office. Bush is a SKIDMARK on the pages of American history, an ANAL anomaly in the grand scheme of things!

Wow, I guess this Think Progress site cannot take comments by other than those that tow the liberal line??? My comments from 2-19 @ 6:01 PM were removed…why? Perhaps because they didn’t meet the criteria of putting down Bush properly? Cannot handle the heat guys? You shouldn’t have a site that welcomes comment if you are afraid to post the contrary comments. Guess you dont believe in freedom to express an opinion, no matter how factual it is…if it doesnt agree with your views. Ciao dudes, I would never again visit a site that is soooo restrictive… do you send me to the gulag now? What is the Stalinist salute anyhow, I have always wondered?

  87. karkinos says:

Wilson is the worst, hands down.

I saw a sarcastic reply regarding interest rates, which exemplifies the idiocy of the american populace. If you have any clue about the history of banking in the US, then you KNOW that central bankers have been the problem. Granting a monopoly only extended the problem. “Give me control of a nation’s money and I care not who makes it’s laws” — Mayer Amschel Bauer Rothschild

Jackson was bad because of the March of Tears. His destruction of the bank charter was a good thing.

If you ever wonder why you constantly have to work harder, invest/save more, and get less, it’s because of the federal reserve.

Ron Paul, constitutial candidate or not, will get my vote.

And why are libertarian federalists crazy? Because we believe in what those like Jefferson did and wrote?
