President Bush is “struggling for relevancy in the same way many other second-term presidents have,” Newsweek observed recently. “But Bush’s burden seems much harder than other presidents in recent memory.” 71 percent of Americans see Bush as a “lame duck” president, and 58 percent “wish the Bush presidency were simply over.”
U.S. News reports that conservatives have seen the writing on the wall and are now advising Bush to “jump start” his final two years by pushing through as much as he can by executive fiat:
With President Bush unable to get much traction so far in moving his agenda through Congress or in improving his job-approval ratings with the public, White House advisers are casting about for ways to jump-start his final two years, including issuing executive orders to get things done without having to ask for support from the Democratic-controlled Congress.
“He should get a list of the executive orders for the last 200 years, as a guide, and choose what he wants to do,” says an informal Bush adviser. One proposal that fiscal conservatives are pushing is to halve all capital-gains taxes, as a way to encourage investment and job creation.
Some conservatives argue that even if Bush somehow regains his political footing, whatever he might work out with the Democratic majority in Congress wouldn’t be very good legislation, so he should go the executive-order route and bypass Congress altogether.
Bush has already begun to implement the strategy. Last month, Bush signed Executive Order 12866 to put political appointees — rather than experienced civil servants — in charge of regulatory agencies. The order would “give the White House much greater control over the rules and policy statements that the government develops to protect public health, safety, the environment, civil rights and privacy.” Columbia Law School professor Peter L. Strauss said the move “achieves a major increase in White House control over domestic government. … Having lost control of Congress, the president is doing what he can to increase his control of the executive branch.”

February 17th, 2007 at 3:30 pmJust as unConstitutional as all his other policies. Executive orders are supposed to expire after 3 months, according to the Constitution. Bush uses them like executive decrees from a dictator.
February 17th, 2007 at 3:30 pmBush needs to be stopped. NOW. I was begining to think impeachment was not the right thing to do (as we should be focusing on showing America that progressives/liberals/dems have real positive plans).

Congress is already irrelevant. They’ve surrendered the power of the purse to the Executive. At this point the only thing the Congressional Dems can do is impeach, and even that will be scuttled by the GOP, or worse, Bush’s unitary executive will bring forth a legal argument that says impeachment doesn’t matter.
And the Supremes will back George up.
We’re one terror attack away from permanent martial law.

Bush Cuts Off Diplomatic Relations With Congress
February 14, 2007 | Issue 43•07
WASHINGTON, DC—President Bush announced Monday that his administration will permanently sever ties with the democratically controlled United States Congress, ending a nearly 220-year-old alliance between the two governmental branches.
“Our administration no longer recognizes the authority of this rogue body,” said Bush in a televised Oval Office address. “Clearly, these combative men and women have a political agenda in direct opposition to our own. They have no concern for my national interests, and have left me no choice.”

It’s the reason he broke the FISA law. It had nothing to go with saving us from the terrorists. It was all about him letting Congress know he can break their laws and they should be too afraid to do anything about it.

February 17th, 2007 at 7:13 pmSubstandard, Think.
Bushco has been pursuing the end from Day One.
Why do you buy the U.S. News LIE that this is just now on the table?
February 17th, 2007 at 7:17 pmThis is a bona fide “coup” of the american democracy. The Neocons have been dreaming this up and have plotted it, piece by piece. Connect the dots and anyone can see how they’ve so handily marched forward with their destruction of this democracy. The only thing they needed from the people was “trust” and we gave it to them without question. Once they abused our trust, it was over. Bush has been running things like a dictatorship for 6 years now so what’s the big news here? We handed over our rights and liberties to a sociopath who is hell bent on conforming this country to “his” standards and morals. (Is this any different than what Hitler did? Didn’t Hitler have the people living in fear? Where were the voices of the people when Hitler marched on and left a genocidal swath? Like us, they initially trusted that he knew what he was doing and when they realized that they were duped by a con man, it was too late. This is precisely what’s occurring in this country right now.
The Congress needs to take action pronto in order to stop this dictatorship from making it’s final coup – the overstepping and overreaching it lusts for by sidestepping the Congress altogether…..sure, he’s been doing it for some time but this makes it “official” now.
Will the people merely sit back and watch the self-destruction of our democracy or will they choose to take action? It’s an individual choice and, if our voices are to be heard, then each one of us needs to begin pressing our representatives toward impeachment now. Impeachment is the only remedy to stop the Bushite regime from pressing forward and finalizing their fascist plans.
February 17th, 2007 at 7:27 pmI don’t get it.
I was under the impression that he was bypassing Congress anyway, with all of the countless “signing statements” that he’s he’s used over the last several years.

Oh, and in the spirit of staying at least somewhat on topic:
The republicans have been complaining about how Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has been heading towards a dictatorship. It is ironic that he and Bush are using similar tactics to passing what they want to do … both wish to use the executive order to pass laws. The difference is Bush is going against the majority while Chavez has an actual legal mandate (though one could argue that his reelection is due to fraud, though i do not have the sources to prove or disprove in the space here.)

February 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pmI can’t wait to see how all of this “executive power” comes back to bite the republicans in the ass! When democrats run the White House, the Senate, and the House–look out!
BTW, if you’re an evangelical and you feel the need to run for president-do the world a favor and run for pastor of your church instead.
No more presidents with hick accents. No more presidents that you want to drink a beer with. Let’s get someone in the White House who ISN’T a wannabe cowboy. NO MORE HICKS!

First, to be politically correct, you want no more presidents who pretend to be the every man. Bush is as much of the every man as Kerry, he just had the ability to lie about his life in order to get the votes he needed. So, what you really want is a president who is real and truthful.
However, I must confess that I would like, and there is room to debate, that the best president/leader would be a philosopher, i.e. well learned and thoughtful. Would it be undemocratic to require an academic prerequisite for applying for the position of President?

Thank you. I had a moment of inspiration for that post, guess it is a mix of the political situation and all the research I’m doing. Doesn’t happen often, but I’m extremely proud of that piece. Both for the message and, less important for most but essential for the history scholar/nerd, the historical references within it. Amazingly, I think at least, it all flows nicely … like a good poem, it all came together. A few typos, but I expect that with my train of thought writing.

Maybe we need engineers: Jimmy Carter, Yeltsin or Arafat. Ok, I was kidding.
February 17th, 2007 at 11:25 pmIMHO, we should reorganize our political system. Change to parliamentary government. This solves the dangerous problem of the executive branch grabbing for dictatorial powers and allows for a multi-party system … to use a cliche … it would kill two birds with one stone.

If anything the President should be the embodiment of what Confucianism calls the ‘best man’. This is a person who embodies everything that is good about humankind, a Jesus-like figure if you will, who leads by example. He understands that he leads by example and does what is upstanding and right, which means he does his best to rule in a way that at the very least will be benign and the very best will benefit their country in a way that will allow it to transcend its previous existence.

Would you consider being my running mate? once I’m of age to run for the post in …. 2020? (If my math and knowledge are correct … one has to be at least 35 to run, am i correct?)
And this is also assuming we are not either drowned or extra crispy by then.

February 17th, 2007 at 11:42 pm#137 JPark
Depends on what part of the life of Jesus one interprets as important. In my reference you can cut out all the theology about the crucifixion and just look at how Jesus lived his life, accepting all individuals and helping those who were in need. Btw, I hope I don’t come over as preaching, because I do not consider myself Christian.

Unfortunately I do not see revolution as likely in our country … not because people are not angry and are not capable of rising up against tyranny, but because of the nuclear capability of our country. If there was such an uprising, if it became clear that it would be successful, what would stop the ruling elite from using the arsenal in order to deny the masses from succeeding, even if it meant the end of the country, if not the entire Earth?

Just finished watching a spanish movie about a group of fired workers that built ships. The company decided to fire 80 but they refused and went to strike, after that the company fired 200. It is an interesting story about unemployment in what should be a developed country. There are 5 minutes where the leading character (Javier Bardem) speaks about what really is this free trade system with such a simplicity that it is overwhelming. Terrific.

February 18th, 2007 at 12:00 amThe problem with the US government is that it attracts con-artist type people to seek political positions. Probably at least half of those in the Congress are pathological liars. They have been liars all their lives and now they are Representatives and Senators. Some of them were unethical lawyers, some were shady real estate brokers, some were lemon used car salesmen, some were Life Insurance peddlers, etc.
Untill voters realize that many politicians are charlatans, then the Congress will never have decent people serving in it. The biggest con-artist huckster in DC is President George W. Bush a born liar!

As a young adult Delay started his own pest contol company and was known to con people about termite infestations when there were none. Eventually he got involved in Texas politics and worked his way into getting elected to the House of Representatives. Once there he conned his way into the GOP House leadership. Sorry to sound so dogmatic, but Marx already stablished what it´s going to happen. Of course, in his times working conditions were extremely poor in developed countries, like the actual III world conditions (sweat shops). Things got somehow better for the working class, unions were stablished, 8 hour journals, incentives, etc. But then we are experiencing the most rabid form of capitalism: neoliberalism, which is profit above anything.
If a company needs to close 5 plants and move them to Taiwan, WTO and IMF says: That´s progress and all economists applaud. Those thousands of fired workers protest but our fantastic media calls them “anti-progress” or communists, etc. Economists say: These companies will lift the living conditions in Taiwan. This can happen, but reality tells us that those countries still have the worse working conditions and companies dont care about giving health care to 12 y/o kids. Exxon has been working in Nigeria for years which results in: no environmental security, infrahuman living and working conditions (abortions without anesthesia, etc.)
So no. Companies dont care about lifting standards of life, they care about profits. If workers go to strike, they are repressed (read the bloody history of Coke in Columbia), humiliated by the media and finally forgotten. Furthermore, these same workers, middle class are almost obligued to buy stuff made by monopolies that just has fired them. So, it is a vice circle whose only purpose is to put the few money of millions into the pockets of hundreds.
I guess things can only change when the people take action. In Argentina, after the country was ripped off by Menem and foreign companies, the middle class found itself without money, there were not money in the banks, the country had broken. Now, middle class really didnt care about lower classes, they wanted their money, which talks a lot about the interests of this dumb middle class. Middle class went out, burned the Congress, fought the police, took the streets…and the ruling class shook. But ruling class is smart and middle class is lazy. Once, two or three things changed, middle class got some of its money and went back to the TV couch. Lower class is still struggling each day to have something to eat. IF middle class would wanted to take the country, they could have done it IMO. But we want others to govern us cuz we are simply to lazy. We are responsible for the world we have.
We should ban all companies that use slavery to produce their stuff. We should ban all companies that hurt the environment. We should ban all companies that destroy small business. We should ban all companies related to war. We should not allow that the right to make money is above the rights of humans.

I know this is a small suggestion, maybe even putting a only band aid on a gangrenous wound, but maybe, just maybe the simplest solution to all those problems would work. I think that establishing a worldwide minimum wage would solve the problem. The minimum wage would not require the change of currency, but would require, for example, that everyone be paid at least equal to American minimum wage, which in China would be about 40 yuan (rounded off estimate).
February 18th, 2007 at 12:44 amIMO this would unite the economies of the world, and nullify any advantage a corporation would gain from going overseas for the cheap labor.
Again, it may be something that is too simple, but sometimes it is the simple plan that is the best.

What is ironic is that corporations claim that they are a person through the 14th amendment, which was meant to prevent recently freed slaves from being denied their rights as citizens of the US. I don’t know the case, but a lawyer argued and won that this applied to corporations also. Therefore, unless I’m wrong or there are any other laws on the books that would complicate it, all that would have to be done is to get a few good lawyers and get the court to declare that the 14th amendment does not apply to corporations, which are in fact not individual persons ….
And just think, if persons running the corporation were all of a sudden liable, then i bet they would conduct their company ethically.
btw, i must mention (and i’m fairly certain my knowledge is correct on this) there is a law on the books that states that the first priority of a corporation and to generate profit for its investors.

Probably. But do you think corporations would allow that? Heh. Thats the issue.
To tell you the truth I dont know too much about economics. But all economists talk about the virtue of free trade and privatizations, etc. No economist have explained to me how it is possible that privatizations in Uruguay, for example, has doubled that country´s external debt. The same examples hold for Latinamerica. All economists talk about macroeconomic variables, how good the country is now for foreign investments and that they create job sources and blah, blah, blah. Well, it is not happening.
There are 11 million mexicans working in the US cuz here they cant survive, and we have this economic system since 1982. So, what are the benefits? I mean, the benefits for all. None. The benefits are just for a few. Public industries (mexican oil company, PEMEX for example) is going into bankrupcy in a few years. The government is in charge of taking all the money from this company, so they can say: Oh, it is inefficient, we need fresh investments for energy from the outside, the unions are to be blamed, those high pensions, etc. It´s all a plan to bring foreign companies to Mexico and have them decide what the mexican people should pay for their products. Competitivity (?) does not lower prices. Methods of production do.
Now, perhaps, if mexican companies were as good as swedish companies, we would have that balance that you talk about, but we dont. All our brains and labor force are abandoning this country. There is no future here.

The real enemy is this average itself, the John Doe who allow these opportunists to screw us up until “we will be so poor and cowed that when They will come to take away our kids we won’t complain, but thank them” as stated by the Reverant Stang. You may think you are in a free country with free speech and free press… Get real, you are free to choose between NBC (owned by Microsoft and G.E. who also owns FOX Network), ABC (owned by Disney) or CBS (owned by Viacom who also owns MTV, Paramount, Famous Players, Blockbusters and name it). Useless to say that these few corps also owns thousands of radio stations, cable/local tv networks, movie/music distribution companies, magazines, major newspapers and so on… well, they own about anything you could possibly imagine. As a matter of fact, it is obvious that there is always somewhere a bigger fish. It has also been obvious that 1984 happened way back in ‘53. Media control is just another step towards mind control. The collective alienation reflects itself in every single aspect of our disfunctional society so that we each other become our own enemies. As stated by Albert Parsons, “formerly the master selected the slave; today the slave selects his master”.
You might say “ahh, that’s just another 21 years old left freak that took Marx too seriously” well, there was indeed a time I enjoyed myself going to the movies and looking at Rambo digging holes in dozens of Vietcong, but then you realized that these Vietnamese are now forced to shoot defoliant and herbicide that will end up in their irrigation system in the cotton crop they are forced to grow and ship overseas to be bleached somewhere where there is no regulation about the use of carcinogenic chlorine bleach. You realize that this bleached cotton crop is then sent to sweatshops in Pakistan where 1.5 million children from 10 to 14 years old catch contagious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis for being packed into insane conditions for transforming the cotton into fabric that is going to be sent to Bangladesh in a free trade zone factory where they pay a father who has to fed his 12 children because he doesn’t know shit about contraceptives 30 cents an hour of grunt work to sew the damn fabric and ship it to your beloved USA who decides to move the damn plant to Mexico where workers got cancers after spending half of their lives printing the Tommy logo on the goddamn piece of fabric that end up with a production cost of about one hundredth of its selling price that you are going to pay at the mall you are mindlessly shopping every Friday evening. You are not supposed to know that, but you just knew it and once you know something, you cannot unknow it.
What does that has to do with a little team of pseudo-hackers playing with a few softwares in their filthy basement you might wonder. Well, we think that if everybody works in the same way, hackers as well as any other citizen living under the post-modern rise of the megacorporations, we might eventually stop performing these murders and insanities at a massive scale and start using our monkey smartness for something else than our own dumb selves. Forget about which republican or democrat clone puppet you will vote for, which clone car you will buy or whatever else self-centered activity. Turn off your tv and stop thinking about what AT&T and G.E. want you to think about and start using the remaining not-yet-altered part of your brain for a collective purpose.

I don’t know much about economics, but what I suggest at least makes some sort of simplistic sense.
Since I’m a historian in training, I can tell you economists only look at what will benefit the US and corporations in the long term. They say there will be a rough ride along the way, but because that ride does not effect them, they do not see it as a problem.
Since you mention the Mexicans in our country, I must point to an example of modern economy that causes destruction. Puerto Rico is my example, before their interaction with the world economy, they were predominantly agricultural and operated on a barter system. With the arrival of corporations and world economy they switched to an industrial system, which they claimed would create more jobs but instead caused extremely high unemployment and extreme poverty in a society that was already on edge. How did they explain this problem? Overpopulation, the Puerto Ricans were breeding too much, it wasn’t the fault of world economy/industrialist policies.
Also, a companies inability to gain a profit is not because they have to pay benefits, etc. but because they refuse to adapt so they can compete. This is why Ford and GM will likely be gone in a decade, unless they change how they make cars and do business.
Anyway, if the benefits were the problem, that would give all the more support to social benefits being the total domain of the state. Healthcare, welfare, etc. should be provided by the government, then businesses don’t have to worry about paying these benefits. It is the ultimate pro-business stance.
o.k. i think i am done rambling … hopefully that is somewhat organized and understandable … meanwhile I’m gonna go get my sleep so I can be recharged for more productive discussion tomorrow :)

Hey does this mean we get to eat one O them Clinton burgers before we fly off the edge? But really it’s more like target or wallyworld.
We all want the lowest price, and well, you know so what F if the person pushing the basket next to yours has to suffer for your gain?
I mean look at them, wearing flip flops and purple spandex. That hair! At the checkout you both purchase the national enquirer
But we don’t see the big world from inside wallyworld now do we you? No you go inside wally world to buy you a contraption that makes your small world even smaller.
But how wise we are from our tiny rooms glowing with magnetically aimed photons. The light! It speaks to us! Oh the Joy of going to walmart and buying small world view things!!
To sit in my room, bathed in colored light, drinking my vodka, watch war on TV. listening to a head, male and female alike, speak. Brittney Spears cut all her hair off it says. I wonder, ‘I would cut my hair off too if people followed me all day’ The remote close by the thought soon perishes with the flick of a button. Whom knew a remote was hardwired to thought.

What we have here is the means to communicate, instantaneously, even so we still fail to communicate.
You can insert a teletype machine into every mans home, call it HTML or what not, and the only thing one would have accomplished is a means for the idiots to yell at one another without coming to blows.
February 18th, 2007 at 1:53 am1. Like any system, if used wisely it can be beneficial. When you open up 1000 new appointments in the government then there are a lot of places you can stick people who you *owe* but not in important spots like Ambassador to France. You can make them the deputy of the national organic waste recycling program or head of arizonian sea life conservation program, without worrying about them burning down Paris.
2. Any system that is excessively beneficial to one political party will be brought into check when the party loses control over it (when Hillary/Obama is elected, Republicans will immediately distrust Homeland Security and suddenly become interested in decentralization).
3. Executive orders can undo other executive orders. Bush repealed Clinton’s environmental works in his first 60 days, the next president can undo the appointment scheme and re-employ educated people in government (and while they’re at it, un-seal the Reagan & Bush Sr. Presidential records). But don’t count on it. #2 is more likely.
I guess what I’m saying is that Douglas Adams had it right: Don’t panic.

A Proclamation for Action against the Corruption of our Great Country’s most Basic Rights and Freedoms.
To paraphrase America’s Founding Fathers:
“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance”
“Give me Liberty or give me Death”
To paraphrase the Constitution:
“If the Government no longer supports the views and wills of it’s People…then the People should Abolish the existing Government and Start afresh…so that the Government OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE SHALL NOT PERISH FROM THE FACE OF THIS EARTH”
To paraphrase the “Wizard of OZ”:
“Uh-oh, Toto…We’re not in Kansas anymore!”
WE, The People, have FAILED in our duty to preserve what MILLIONS of our Brothers, Fathers and Forefathers died to protect: a true DEMOCRACRATIC Nation of the People (not the Fascist ELITE) devoted to the “In-Alienable” Rights of Freedom, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Instead, WE, The People of America, have allowed – and by lack of action, even sanctioned – the Wholesale Dismemberment of our supposedly Beloved system of Government by a small but EXTREMELY POWERFUL bunch of Pedophilic, Drug-dealing, Money-and-Power Worshipping, Alcohol/Drug/Power Addicted, Homosexual, Fear-Mongering, Sadistic MURDERERS (re: Bohemian Grove, Monte Rio, CA), whose idea of a good time (when they’re not making fortunes off the sale of both “legal” (re: Lilly Pharmaceuticals, et al.)and “ill-legal” drugs and arms (re: CIA/NSA Black Ops Funding, Iran/Contra); raping the natural resources of OUR planet (re: ExxonMobile, BP, et al.); slaying innocent civilians both at home and abroad (re: 9/11 and just about every military action we’ve made in the past 40+ years); enslaving the world through Media- and Economic-based social manipulation (re: “Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars”); and sending OUR Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Sons, Daughters, Friends and Neighbors off to die in some ill-conceived “war” on an IDEA called “Terrorism” – how do you kill an IDEA???) is to Abduct, Drug, Torture innocent young men and women, then strip them naked (both literally and psychologically), set them loose in a secured, reprisal-free environment they control (re: Mt. Shasta Military Reservation) and indulge themselves in hunting them down with dogs and guns, then murdering them in something they refer to as “The Greatest Game on Earth”, the ultimate “extreme sport” (Never heard of it? Try Google searching for it. Or, just ask the VP…it’s supposedly one of his favorites!)
To paraphrase another:
“The ONLY thing we have to FEAR is FEAR ITSELF”
We’ve all heard it, how many of YOU understand what that REALLY MEANS?
Do YOU?
So I put it to you rather bluntly:
Are you a MAN, and willing to do a MAN’S JOB of fighting (through words and actions) against these charlatans for your (until the Patriot Act) Constitutionally guaranteed Rights and Freedoms (like our fathers did before us?), or:
Are you “Sheeple”, willing to let the most noble Dreams and Aspirations of so many who died for your comfortable lives be usurped by these reprehensibly evil beings?
By visiting this website, you have already taken the first step. Are you MAN enough to go further, and accept the responsibility of guarding and preserving those precious Ideals of Freedom, Life, Liberty, Equality and the Pursuit of Happiness we so often pay only lip-service to?
ARE YOU A MAN?
The future depends on US, and our actions made TODAY. Don’t let the future pay for the mistakes WE CAN CORRECT NOW!
“A People should not fear its Government; A Government should fear its People”
“For you shall know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH shall set you free”
“Don’t get mad, get even!”
“Know your ENEMY as you know YOURSELF”
“We are all one consciousness observing itself subjectively; There is no Death: Life is just an Illusion and we are the Imagination of Ourselves”
“It’s not a war on drugs; it’s a war on personal freedom”
I LOVE AMERICA, and I’m DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT by writing this Proclamation to encourage anyone and everyone who still cares to take action and sow the seeds of discontent. My only goal is to help make you think deeply on just what is at stake here, and what we can do about rescuing ourselves from this revolting situation we have allowed ourselves to develop.
Our Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves…and we SHOULD be ashamed.
Please copy this post and send it to as many others as you feel may be willing to help us help ourselves in restoring OUR beloved country to its former glory as a beacon of Freedom and Justice in our world. Only through our collective efforts will any positive changes be made.
WE MUST NOT FAIL AGAIN!

I looked at your PAPA GATT coulter style rhetoric.
What amazes me is that you think you know what the universal God thinks. You think that because YOU, who has crammed much media BS, down your wide open all accepting gullet, know God, much less what he thinks.
If you were a seagull you would likely choke on an empty six pack ring in your ‘wisdom’
You know nothing. You, human, cannot to this day comprehend space nor time. The reason you vermin are trapped on earth is because you are mentally unstable and cannot be allowed into the universe. Your Papa Gatt rubbish is proof of your inability to grasp concepts bigger than the bag of cheetos you stuff your numbingly inept self with.

Wal-Mart Turns in Student’s Anti-Bush Photo, Secret Service Investigates Him
By Matthew Rothschild
October 4, 2005
S
elina Jarvis is the chair of the social studies department at Currituck County High School in North Carolina, and she is not used to having the Secret Service question her or one of her students.
But that’s what happened on September 20.
Jarvis had assigned her senior civics and economics class “to take photographs to illustrate their rights in the Bill of Rights,†she says. One student “had taken a photo of George Bush out of a magazine and tacked the picture to a wall with a red thumb tack through his head. Then he made a thumb’s down sign with his own hand next to the President’s picture, and he had a photo taken of that, and he pasted it on a poster.â€
According to Jarvis, the student, who remains anonymous, was just doing his assignment, illustrating the right to dissent.
But over at the Kitty Hawk Wal-Mart, where the student took his film to be developed, this right is evidently suspect.
An employee in that Wal-Mart photo department called the Kitty Hawk police on the student. And the Kitty Hawk police turned the matter over to the Secret Service.
On Tuesday, September 20, the Secret Service came to Currituck High.“At 1:35, the student came to me and told me that the Secret Service had taken his poster,†Jarvis says. “I didn’t believe him at first. But they had come into my room when I wasn’t there and had taken his poster, which was in a stack with all the others.â€
She says the student was upset.
“He was nervous, he was scared, and his parents were out of town on business,†says Jarvis.
She, too, had to talk to the Secret Service.
“Halfway through my afternoon class, the assistant principal got me out of class and took me to the office conference room,†she says. “Two men from the Secret Service were there. They asked me what I knew about the student. I told them he was a great kid, that he was in the homecoming court, and that he’d never been in any trouble.â€
Then they got down to his poster.
“They asked me, didn’t I think that it was suspicious,†she recalls. “I said no, it was a Bill of Rights project!â€
At the end of the meeting, they told her the incident “would be interpreted by the U.S. attorney, who would decide whether the student could be indicted,†she says.
The student was not indicted, and the Secret Service did not pursue the case further.
“I blame Wal-Mart more than anybody,†she says. “I was really disgusted with them. But everyone was using poor judgment, from Wal-Mart up to the Secret Service.â€
A person in the photo department at the Wal-Mart in Kitty Hawk said, “You have to call either the home office or the authorities to get any information about that.â€
Jacquie Young, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart at company headquarters, did not provide comment within a 24-hour period.
Sharon Davenport of the Kitty Hawk Police Department said, “We just handed it over†to the Secret Service. “No investigative report was filed.â€
Jonathan Scherry, spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, D.C., said, “We certainly respect artistic freedom, but we also have the responsibility to look into incidents when necessary. In this case, it was brought to our attention from a private citizen, a photo lab employee.â€
Jarvis uses one word to describe the whole incident: “ridiculous.â€

February 19th, 2007 at 10:46 am* glad to see so much intelligent comments. there is still hope for this country!
* #167 re corporations.
> corporations have a legal, fiduciary duty to their owners (i.e. shareholders) to maintain and increase the value of their shares.
> until about 1885, corporations were governed by state law as creatures of the state. they had only those rights and responsibilities as state law allowed them. if it wasn’t in the law, then the corporation didn’t have it.
> about 1885 the supreme court decided a case [santa clara v. union pacific railroad, i believe] that was brought on the laws from the previous paragraph. although the court’s decision did NOT directly address the issue of corporate ‘personhood’, it did agree that santa clara (in california), did have the right to regulate the corporation.
> however, the clerk of the court was an ex-railroad executive and one of the duties of the clerk was to write the headnotes, an introduction to the decision that summarizes its key points. this person wrote in the head notes that the court had decided a corporation was a person under the 14th amendment. that was a lie and not in the court’s decision nor any reasonable deduction from it. we have lived with the results of that decision since then as corporations continually used that headnote to expand their ‘rights’.
* i agree that if corporations and their executive officers were held to account for the crimes committed by ‘the corporation’ and punished accordingly, then i’m sure they would act more responsibly. while a person can be put in jail for the rest of their lives for some crimes, what do you do with the legal fiction called a ‘corporation’? the equivalent would be placing the corporation into receivership with all its actions and decisions decided by a court appointed receiver and periodic, public review to confirm it is no longer committing those crimes for which it was convicted. the corporate equivalent to the death penalty would be revocation of its charter and subsequent dissolution and sell-off of its various parts.
* yes i know: i am dreaming, but i also believe that until corporations are returned to the creatures of the states that were for the several centuries before 1885, we will continue to experience their unchecked greed and lust for power.

I don’t want that imbalance of power in the hands of ANY one branch of OUR government, regardless of partisanship…This is EXACTLY the reason that our forefathers instituted the concept of “checks and balances” into the Constitution of the United States of America in the first place-they understood that too much control in any one branch, be it exectutive, legislative or judicial, would be detrimental to the system as a whole.
Or were you sleeping during Civics class in school?
Did you even have a civics class in school, because apparently either many schools do not offer this VERY important class anymore, or the subject is not being taught as thoroughly as it should be taught…extreme cutbacks in educational funding at work, no doubt!
It is a shame that we even have to discuss this subject at all…but, I’m glad that at the very least we have a forum such as this one to do so.
Lastly, while I want to see King Georgie go away ASAP, I don’t care for the next in line too much, either…His whole administration needs to be vanquished!
Besides all that, can you not tell that I’m Libertarian???
