Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda regaining power.

“Senior leaders of Al Qaeda operating from Pakistan have re-established significant control over their once battered worldwide terror network and over the past year have set up a band of training camps in the tribal regions near the Afghan border,” the New York Times reports. “American officials said there was mounting evidence that Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, had been steadily building an operations hub in the mountainous Pakistani tribal area of North Waziristan. Until recently, the Bush administration had described Mr. bin Laden and Mr. Zawahri as detached from their followers and cut off from operational control of Al Qaeda.”

I am not surprised about this happening, but why does Bush not care about capturing or killing Osama?

  2. Juan C says:

These are good news. More countries need to be invaded.

  3. Zooey says:

We could have had them at Tora Bora, but noooo, GWB pulls back.
Now OBL is getting his organization back to where it was 6-7 years ago, right under the nose of the The Decider.

    Worst. President. Ever.

  4. Jay Randal says:

Zooey > I think Dubya needs Osama as a bogeyman. Otherwise how could his “War on Terror” continue if Osama was gone and al-Qaeda
    destroyed?!

  5. rachel kinnardi says:

    Comment by Jay Randal

Because Osama is a CIA Operative in a CIA sponsored and run Operation using American troops.

  6. Jay Randal says:

Well rachel Osama was financed and trained by the CIA years ago. Perhaps he is their Frankenstein monster who is out of their control now, but they also are loathe to eliminate their creation.

I guess he’s got to keep the profit machine going for his “base.”

  8. unbelievable says:

Well Pat Roberston did say we were going to get attacked again because we are pissing off god with our liberal, homo-loving lifestyles…

  9. katy says:

“Until recently, the Bush administration had described Mr. bin Laden and Mr. Zawahri as detached from their followers and cut off from operational control of Al Qaeda.”

    more wishful thinking…

they just won’t grasp this newfangled news source… can’t imagine how their lies and attempts to distract don’t take hold…

  10. Jay Randal says:

If a big terror attack occurs again, in the US, before Bush leaves office, then I wonder what excuse he will use about it? He claims our troops fighting in Iraq are preventing terrorism over here, but that claim gets debunked if another terror attack happens. Bush has created his own Catch-22 problem.

Exactly as planned. Right on schedule to get this war into “phase two”

This is exactly how the “script” is supposed to go. Protraction..Protraction..Protraction, this is what the arms industry and all of it’s subsidiaries wants to happen. They lose money otherwise. This is a “corporate war” more than anything else with the President illegally using our forces for those ends.

And to whom is the President beholdin?

    Bingo!

He needs to be strung up and hanged by the neck until dead.

    Them son-sub-itches!

I cannot seem to post these links (if they show up here in this thread) in the VA thread.

Would someone care to for me?

I hope they take this time.

    Thanks, rachel.

We can look at the links on the VA thread, now that we know they are there.

So much for the “fight them over there” argument for prolonging the occupation of Iraq. And now that AlQaeda is back in Afghanistan and in Pakistan the Bush administration is aiming its guns at… Iran, of course!

  62. doug says:

If America were serious about the threat that Al Queda poses there is a solution. The solution is one of problem solving.

    1. Listen to the complaint that Al Queda has.

    2. I believe Al Queda’s complaint is one of America’s colonial exploitation of the world.

    3. Straight forward actions can be taken to remove the perception.

    4. Money and military coersion are at the heart of Al Queda’s complaint, hence the attack on the Trade Centres and the Pentagon.

    5. First Congress must reverse the tax cuts given to the very rich in the United States and introduce greater taxation of those who can afford it most.

    6. Use some of the increased US government revenue for programs to help the poorest. Making direct payments to the victims of Katrina. The payments should be large enough for them to get a complete new start. I don’t know what amount that might be but perhaps a flat $50,000 for everyone effected. The amount should be the same for all persons. It is not meant to be insurance coverage.

    7. Turn prisons into education facilities so that people there can improve their chances and life opportunities.

    8. Reducing military spending would free up vast amounts of money for productive programs.

    9. America should provide trillions of dollars in funding through the United Nations for programs that help the poorest people of the world. It is essential that the USA back away from directing the funds. It is essential that the people who need the funds must decide what will serve their needs best. Using the UN avoids the hedgemonic Western view being imposed on people with different beliefs, and cultures.

    11. America’s slurring of religous and political beliefs needs to stop. It is mere arrogants on the part of Americans to try to force your “values” on those who do not believe nor trust in your values.

    10. After the USA has taken these kinds of steps it would likely become possible to hold meetings with groups who protest against the American hedgemon such as, and even, Al Queda.

Nice work, Democrats. Chalk about another victory in your win column in the war on terror.

  66. paul says:

Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism expert at Georgetown University, told the House Armed Services Committee last week that Al Qaeda “is on the march.” He said, “Al Qaeda in fact is now functioning exactly as its founder and leader, Osama bin Laden, envisioned it,” because, he said, Qaeda leaders are planning major attacks and inspiring militants to carry out attacks around the globe.

I realize that ‘progressives’ will try to explain how Al Qaeda is Bush’s fault (even though the U.S. was attacked many times before Bush came into office) and ignore that there is a threat at all. . Think whatever you want, but please get your head’s out of the sand about the real threat of terrorism. The preschool mentality of denying any of position of the opposition, works on the playground, but the stakes are much higher now. I’m afraid the last thing I may hear from my liberal friends before I get the news we are losing a city to a dirty bomb is: “I know you are, but what am I”?

Certainly, what we’ve created has empowered them….that’s a “no brainer”.

  75. rachel says:

Says President George W. Bush “This country is pursuing a new strategy in Iraq, and I ask you to give it a chance to work.”

This is the equivalent of when the three American Idol judges say “No” and the AI hopeful pleads, “Can I sing something else?” The response should be a resounding “NO!”

We gave you three years to make your Iraq strategy work, W, and you’ve screwed the pooch. As of this week, 7 of 10 Americans think you’re doing a crappy job, more Americans than not want you out of the presidency, and the fact that you would lead us further into war, a war that has been condemned by everyone from your citizens, to your congress, to your former cabinet members (including your former Secretary of State), to your joint chiefs for crying out loud, is nothing short of dispicable. When people stood in your way, even your own generals, you simply stripped them of their power like a true dictator. You’ve removed the very notion of checks and balances. You’ve broken the law and rewritten it to clear yourself of wrongdoing. You’ve disguised your crimes under the banner of defense, and rallied our sympathies on lies. You’ve wiped out democracy.

But I don’t have to spend my time being mad about this, because time will take care of things. The history books will remember you as a simple man too thick to make smart decisions or coherent speeches, a puppet of his corrupt administration (read: Cheney and Rove), the first person to begin to erode the freedoms that make America great. You will be remembered with a wince, a scar on American history, the man who turned the world against America, a man who leaves the country much worse than he received it.

In fact, if anything, we should thank you, Mr. Bush, for reminding us what makes America great. When your embarassing reign of terror is over, perhaps we’ll appreciate what we have here with the USA.

This is a direct quote from U.S. SENATOR PATRICK LEAHY: I have never seen a time when our Constitution and fundamental rights as Americans were more threatened by their own government.

Says it all. I feel something that is as close to hatred as I’ve ever felt. Betrayed by our own government. Misled by our president. A corrupt, dispisable administration that will almost certainly be vilified by future generations has destroyed – no, better yet, intentionally pissed on – almost everything that makes America great. Suspending core American principles. Holding people without trials. Torturing criminals. Spying on Americans. Attacking a non-threat because they went after his dad.

George Bush is a pathetic leader and his central staff mostly consists of people who have done a miserable job at supporting America and dammit! I want my rights back!

To those who think that Lieutenant Watada is a traitor or a deserter, let me remind you of a time when a government scared its fearful citizens into segregating themselves. A time when disloyalty to the army was disloyalty to the nation. When opposing the government (which, by the way, is an American core value, protected by the Bill of Rights itself) made you unpatriotic. That time was Nazi Germany, and although it may *feel* like a hyperbolic analogy, I think it’s apt. And look how we remember it.

The government HAS decieved us and America is less safe today than a few years ago. BRAVO for a soldier whose allegiance is to the constitution and not a corrupt, criminal administration.

Lt. Watada is a hero. When he took his oath, he took it to uphold the American Constitution, not to blindly support a Commander in Chief. And when the Commander in Chief orders something illegal, should it be opposed? After all, wasn’t “I was just following orders” the defense used in Nuremburg? One we, as humans, found unacceptable? One that we felt was not an excuse? If Lt Watada is convinced, as about 51% of American people are, that the administration’s actions are illegal, if not plainly dispicable, and his goal is truly to fight for America, then he has greater convinction than most pathetic Americans who are committed to nothing but TV or an unquestioned political party. And if he’s willing to go to prison for his beliefs, he has more courage than most of the cowards who judge him anonymously on an online message baord.

History will vindicate this man. I remain convinced that history will remember President Bush as the worst president ever, even worse than Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, or even Warren Harding. The “government” that exists today has done, and is doing, things so distinctly un-American than it’s easy to find quotes from our forefathers that expressly condemn their actions! Freedom of the press is at stake. Freedom of speech is at stake. Freedom to oppose your government is at stake. Your very rights are at stake – you can now be held without trial and tortured if you are suspected of being a terrorist. Your privacy is gone. And it’s all under the guise of “for your protection.” Folks, what good is safety if you have no freedom? Says Benjamin Franklin, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

I wonder what it will be like when we have some distance from this era and we look back: will we be living in a 1984-like military state? Or will our freedoms be restored and we remember this as I expect, like a period where a self-serving administration sought to control its citizens and promote its own agenda?

    Time will tell.

Hey Paul….do your homework please before making inana statements without credibility. It’s clear that we could have gotten Osama (Mahfouz’s bro) if we wanted to. The fact is that Mahfouz and GWB were “business partners” in Arbusto Energy and have a very long history of corrupt connections. THIS is precisely why GWB waived off rumors of 911…..THIS is the connection GWB didn’t want investigated….THIS is at the root of all that’s gone wrong in this country….connecting the dots has become “child’s play”….guess that’s why individuals who have less than a “child’s IQ” can’t seem to connect them??

  77. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

    Paul–
I think Liberals have every right to blame Bush for the reemergence of Osama bin Laden as a powerful terrorist. Bush promised he would hunt down those responsible for 9/11, yet he allowed bin Laden to escape into the mountains of Afghanistan. Then we invaded a country that had no connection to 9/11 or Al Qaeda. We have our troops overcommitted and distracted from Al Qaeda and have created a terrorist breeding ground in Iraq.

Here’s how it works: Bush has allowed an evil terrorist to remain free and regain power while spending billions of dollars and thousands of American lives in the wrong country. Bush IS to blame.

I’m afraid the last thing I may hear from my liberal friends before I get the news we are losing a city to a dirty bomb is: “I know you are, but what am I”?

    You’re being paranoid.

#76 – go to http://www.911truth.org and check out the article written by Sander Hicks, AlterNet and see what obvious “bedfellows” Bush & Osama really are/were/always will be. This will make your hair stand on end. The article is entitled: 9/11: THE CASE ISN’T CLOSED. Check it out today.

9/11: THE CASE ISN’T CLOSED by Sander Hicks was posted on February 2, 1007 – go to http://www.911truth.org and scoll down about 5 or 6 to find locate it. It’s downright scary!

#77 And whom do you believe made the american public so skeptical? Whom do you think pulled the bogus “terror alerts” continually to ante up the “fear agenda” before elections? Whom do you think would be responsible for the game of “Crying Wolf”??

It the GOP and people like yourself who voted these idiots into office, that’s who! It’s small wonder the liberals who had the intelligence and foresight to NOT vote any Rethug into office can now say directly to people like you: ‘WE TOLD YOU SO, DOLT!

Enjoy your new western-style parliamentary democracy, good people of afghanistan!!! YOU’RE WELCOME!!!

damn! i just don’t see why everyone doesn’t love us and want to be just like us. probably because they’ve heard about our “liberals and democrats”

is “mild retardation” the new “good citizenship”??

You’re right, paul. That is the real agenda. We progressives don’t give a shit about our troops being used for cannon fodder, or the fact that we invaded a country that was no threat to us, or that the Middle East is now thrown into turmoil, or that Iraqi children are being blown up every single day for no good reason.

You are so right, paul. Our only agenda is that now we are able to say to idiots like you — WE TOLD YOU SO!! WE WERE RIGHT!! THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS!!

    /truly heavy sarcasm

To all posters, please write letters to your editors about the miserable conditions in the V.A. hospitals also your representatives…There would be a great solution to these old warn out hospital’s and slow service our vet’s have to wait for…My solution would be to have free medical to all vet’s in every hospital and Doctor’s office in our country…The V.A could close down all these dreadful buildings and issue check’s to the medical providers upon service…No waiting, no poor service and imediate care that they deserve..Sorry for being off topic….Maybe not…Blessings all..What have you done today to bring about Peace.?….Do something to bring all the troops home now…

Think whatever you want, but please get your head’s out of the sand about the real threat of terrorism.

    Comment by paul #66

    paul,

You’re the one who needs to “THINK”…

…deadly military force does not address the ROOT CAUSES of “terrorism”…

…therefore will not solve the problem…

    …What are the causes paul?

…and what “effective” ways (non-military) can YOU think of that will convince these “terrorists” that their struggle and method of overcoming it is illegitimate?

…try thinking outside the PRIMAL box paul…

    …seriously…

Sharon, I like it! Too bad it has so much common sense, we know how hard that is to implement…

We are having false spring down here in the Bay Area, it is strange. I’ll try to shoot some sun your way.

Thank’s SKdea, we need it…Can you do a quick send, feet getting webed and turning into a soggie spring here….Blessings

  90. stonehinge says:

Before we start going all ga-ga over another questionable report like this, it would help a lot if more Americans saw the following videos:

    Al Qaeda Doesn’t Exist

The War on Terror is a Fraud

Both of these virals are excerpts from the BBC documentary, “The Power of Nightmares”, which was banned from the US media after it was smeared by Peter Bergen, the self-proclaimed “expert” on terrorism. The entire documentary can be downloaded at here.

  91. Helmut Eckart says:

It comes back to one the more glaring defects of US leadership; ARROGANCE, it even spilled over to the media. As Putin observed last week in Munich about the US marching all over the place (globe) w/o regard for anyone except its dubious “Interests” that assessmnet should have come from our own media, so scared of Cheney, a long time ago. We are about to loose three wars, maybe four – while Pakistan is OUR? ally? What a hoax.
We are not lucking fire power, simply
    thinking power!

  92. stonehinge says:

Well, Helmut, there never was any intention to “win” a war in Iraq…destabilization and depopulation were sufficient to satisfy the zio-cons. Now it turns out that Cheney has been looking to get $100 oil from the start. So any loss of oil production stemming from an attack on Iran is just gravy for that skeevy bastard. It’s not looking good and this piece on Al Qaeda is just more disinformation.

  93. windrider says:

For ignoring 9 months of warnings about al-qaeda’s intent to attack the US, Bush *IS* responsible

For putting 90% of the military and fiscal resources into invading and occupying Iraq, NOT connected to 9/11 and NOT (at that time) connected to al-qaeda, Bush *IS* responsible

For ignoring and refusing to make any *real* effort to DEFEAT the Taliban (not just drive them over the border into Pakistan), and allowing them to regenerate bigger and badder, Bush *IS* responsible.

For allowing bin Laden to escape at Tora Bora by refusing the extra troops needed to seal the exit and capture and/or kill OBN, Bush IS responsible.

For continuing to ignore al-qaeda outside the imitators in Iraq, thereby allowing al-qaeda to regenerate and re-establish command and control, Bush *IS* responsible.

Starting a war with Iran will not defeat the Taliban, nor will it eliminate bin Laden and his echelon, it will only inflame genuine hatreds against Bush’s drive for dominance in the Middle East and allow al qaeda to recruit even more terrorists to their cause. And whatever the consequences of attacking Iran, Bush *IS* responsible.

I have absolutely no faith in those 535 cowards ‘running’ Congress to either rein Bush in before he makes an awful situation truly horrific by attacking Iran, but I do have faith that this monsterous man (and the dark men whispering in his ear) will be held accountable by whatever god they believe in. Hell is going to be VERY crowded, and I think the Republican contingent will be horrified to find them sitting next to the likes of Arafat, Hitler, Hussein, and Bin Laden, judged equally culpable for all the death and suffering they’ve either caused directly or allowed to happen. Hope they like the heat.

  94. Raymond Funamoto says:

    Osama and Ayman
    Said to the Pieman
    “May I sample Your Pie
    OTHERWISE–YOU DIE!”
    Said the Pieman
    To Osama and Ayman,
“I thought you two were GONE!”
    Said Osama and Ayman
    To the bewildered pieman
    “FORGOTTEN–BUT NEVER GONE!”
    “And now, Mr. Pieman,”
    Said Osama and Ayman,
    Pointing their Kalashnikovs at him,
    “GIVE US YOUR PIE!”
    They pulled their triggers
    “AND DIE!!!!!”
    Poor Mr. Pieman,
    Because of CHIMPya’s Iraq FOLLY
Had to DIE at the hands of
    Osama and Ayman!
