Tony Snow Backtracks: ‘Of Course’ Things Have Gone Wrong In Iraq

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow was asked about pre-war military plans that predicted only 5,000 U.S. troops would be in Iraq in 2006. “What went wrong?” a reporter asked. Snow replied, “I’m not sure anything went wrong.

This morning, Snow was forced to face reality. NBC’s Tim Russert pointed out, “The weapons of mass destruction, the cost of the war, the size of the military force necessary, the level of sectarian violence. All those assumptions were just wrong.” Snow tried to dodge the claim but was asked again, “Things did go wrong?” Snow said, “Yeah. Of course.”

Q: Slides from a prewar briefing show that by this point the U.S. expected that the Iraqi army would be able to stabilize the country and that the U.S would have as few as 5,000 troops there. What went wrong?

SNOW: I’m not sure anything went wrong.

RUSSERT: But things did go wrong?

SNOW: Yeah. Of course. It’s a war. Things always go wrong. As a matter of fact it happens in every war.

SNOW: Yeah. Of course. It’s a war. Things always go wrong. As a matter of fact it happens in every war.

And that’s why wars of aggression violate the law. Because when mistakes are made, tens of thousands of innocent children, women, and men die violent, painful deaths. Tens of thousands more are injured.

The problem is, Tony, that the Administration knew how to do it right. “The Day After: The Army in a Post-Conflict Iraq” was released in December of 2002 by the Center for Strategic Leadership, U.S. Army War College.

But Bush didn’t listen to the generals. He only listened to the War Profiteers.

  11. Zooey says:

Frankly, I don’t care if the whole lot of them are doing the dance of the seven veils for each other every weeknight, and twice on weekends — I want them gone because they’re criminals, they’re ruining this country, and the frickin’ death rate is too high.

At least 28 bombs explode in Thailand By RUNGRAWEE C. PINYORAT, Associated Press Writer
    37 minutes ago

At least 28 bombs exploded Sunday in apparently coordinated attacks in parts of southern Thailand plagued by a Muslim insurgency, killing three people and wounding more than 50, the military said.

The bombings targeted hotels, karaoke bars, power grids and commercial sites in the country’s southernmost provinces, the only parts of predominantly Buddhist Thailand with Muslim majorities. Two public schools were torched.

Police said three Thais of Chinese descent were also gunned down in Pattani province in what was believed to be the act of insurgents. The killings occurred as the country’s Chinese community was celebrating the Lunar New Year Sunday.

Violence in the south has been escalating in recent months despite a major policy shift by the military-imposed government, which is trying to replace an earlier, iron-fisted approach in dealing with the rebels with a “hearts and minds” campaign.

More than 2,000 people have died in the provinces bordering Malaysia since the insurgency erupted in 2004, fueled by accusations of decades of misrule by the central government. The insurgents have not announced their goals, but they are believed to be fighting for a separate state imbued with radical Islamic ideology.

In Sunday’s attacks, two people were killed and 33 injured in Yala province, while one person died and 20 were wounded in a tourist town in Narathiwat province, said Col. Wichai Thongdaeng, a military spokesman.

“We believe that the attacks were planned to cause division, create fear among the people. They want to show that they are still capable (of carrying out attacks),” he said, adding the military has sent additional troops to the region.

Two explosions tore through electricity transmitters in Pattani province, causing blackouts in several areas, said Pattani police Maj. Gen. Kokiat Wongworachart.

Five bombs exploded in the border town of Sungai Kolok, a popular destination for Malaysian and Singaporean tourists, said Maj. Gen. Yongyut Chareonwanit, the Narathiwat police chief. At least two schools in the province had been torched, he said.

Wichai said nine bombs went off in the Yala provincial capital and another seven in the border town of Betong, which also attracts tourists to its entertainment venues. A sizable number of Sunday’s bombings were against karaoke parlors, which are regarded as decadent by the Islamic rebels.

Two bombings were also reported in neighboring Songkhla province.

  15. Jay Randal says:

katy > remember Jeff Gannon was supposedly a reporter who had access to the WHite House as a cover. He was Bush’s man toy. Now Bush has Tony Snow as his in-house man toy. You heard it here first by me.

  16. The Joker says:

    Hey Uncle Ho,
Care to discuss the article I posted. Your getting your talking points ready, correct?

  17. Jay Randal says:

Zooey > they have orgies in the WH every night after Laura goes to bed. You do not want to imagine the visuals of Rove naked, nor Cheney wearing red panties and a bra, nor Bush in leather chaps with the crotch cut-out. Sorry you will have nightmares now > lol.

  18. The Joker says:

    Hey Jay Randal,
Care to discuss the Religion of Peace?

  19. Uncle Ho says:

Joker; I gladly invite the jihadists to come to the USA. we badly need ‘regime change’ in Washington. We did it to them, turnabout is fair play. What’s good for the goose is sauce for the gander.

  20. Sanjeev Singal says:

‘This film is dedicated to the gallant people of Afghanistan’. These famous words from the closing frame of the Hollywood action movie Rambo III summarize the American role during the Soviet Era Afghanistan. History has come round a full circle. America consistently fears someone will conduct ‘Operation Cyclone’ and will be funding and arming Iraqi and Afghan resistance forces. Erstwhile the Soviet Union and Iran have set an example of ethical values in international politics by not doing what America did during the eighties in Afghanistan. Can America disclose how many Stinger Missiles were donated to the people whom he now calls al- Qaeda and Taliban?

  21. AshenShard says:

What went wrong is that we actually invaded, that is what went wrong! It’s a slippery slope, once one thing goes wrong everything does. If we had not invaded Iraq in the first place things in the world would be a whole lot more jolly, Americans would not be divided by these extremely partisan politics, and not to mention the fact that Afghanistan would not be such a mess. Oh, and I forgot, North Korea has nukes, and Iran elected a conservative nutjob because our conservative nutjob decided to act the cowboy vigilante and make a preemptive strike, causing those in the world who are normally moderate to understandably crap their pants and react in not so positive ways.

And thats only a drop in the bucket, I’m a book could be written over everything that has gone wrong since the illegal invasion of Iraq.

  22. Zooey says:

Sorry you will have nightmares now > lol.
    Comment by Jay Randal

No, I won’t have nightmares about that, Jay. I already have nightmares about the travesty going on in Iraq — to our people and the Iraqi civilians.

Stay on topic, you frickin piss-soaked troll.

  24. Jay Randal says:

Joker > Religion of Peace? I am all for peace, but tell that to Bush and Cheney please.

  25. No Matey of Yours says:

Have to laugh at American might , First they attack a weak military country Iraq on a patheitc lie, Then complain their getting shot at, Then blame another country for supplying Iraq arms,

Now we have The most advanced army in the world that are acting like the broken cowards they really are . Karma My son , Karma

  27. Jay Randal says:

Zooey > It is ironic that GOPers wanted Bill Clinton impeached for lying about getting a few hummers from Monica in the White House, but Bush can have male hookers in the WH and GOPers do not care.

  28. jeff says:

Why do you interview a spokesperson? Oh, because he’s a FOX propagandist who happens to work for the WH.

  29. Uncle Ho says:

Fact: The United States invaded and occupied a country without just cause and provocation.-thus violating international laws and the Nuremberg rulings involving the planning and waging wars of aggression.

Fact: the United States have committed and is committing crimes against humanity. Rape, murder, torture, abductions, secret imprisonment of citizens in violation of the Geneva Conventions. Some of these ‘detainees’ were tortured to death.

Fact: The United States overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in Chile in 1973, engineered the coup in Iran in 1953, imposing the Shah upon its citizens, Guatemala in 1954. The School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia teaching torture and terror methods to its ’students’ from right-wing dictators from the banana republics.

As the Marines used to say in the Vietnam war, payback is a motherfcker”

  30. Jay Randal says:

Remember that Tony Snow a few weeks ago said he enjoys being alone in the Oval Office with Bush. Now do not try to tell me they have wonderful conversations about world issues. They are doing the nasty together and the press is negligent for not noticing their sexual affair.

It looks like Bush’s “war on terror” is creating more terrorism.

  32. Jay Randal says:

See look at the pic closely of Tony Snow above: notice that every hair on his head is in perfect order > well groomed and not a flake of dandruff. He is GAY. I would not care that he is a Gay man, but he helps Bush, so he needs to be outed.

  33. katy says:

ok, jay… it kinda went from funny to enough already…
i got it the first time…
    just sayin’…

  34. mr.ed says:

Tony took a 90% paycut to be press secretary. He’s still overpaid.

  35. Jay Randal says:

katy I have outed him, so my message does not need to be elaborated on further. Just saying that sex is happening in WH and the press ignores it.

  36. Sploot Doctor says:

The Secretary of State of the United States of America is shocked, angered and surprised that the Mahdi Army and Badr Corps milita men she hired won’t invade their own neighborhoods and kill themselves.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told Iraqi leaders Saturday that the Baghdad security operation needs to “rise above sectarianism” and noted that no U.S. or Iraqi forces have yet moved into the capital’s major Shiite militia stronghold, an Iraqi official said.

The official, who was familiar with the discussions, said Rice told Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that the initial stage of the crackdown, which began Wednesday, appeared to focus on Sunni areas and had left Sadr City, stronghold of the Mahdi Army militia, nearly untouched.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to release the information to the media.

He said Rice stopped short of accusing the Iraqis of displaying pro-Shiite bias in the operation and said it appeared that the security crackdown was going well.

Top Sunni politicians have also complained that Sunni neighborhoods have been targeted for raids and searches while Sadr City and other Shiite militia hideouts have been spared.

    …guess what JOKE…

…if you (and your inbred kind) don’t hurry up and renounce your false gods…

    …Bushiva and L’il Dick…

…I’d say the headline of your little infomercial will read…

    …”Coming soon to a neighborhood near YOU”…

  40. Briseadh na Faire says:

    What breeds “terrorists”?

“More than 2,000 people have died in the provinces bordering Malaysia since the insurgency erupted in 2004, fueled by accusations of decades of misrule by the central government.

Merely because the predominate religion is Buddiasm does not mean the Rulers follow The Path.

In the United States, those who most loudly profess their Christianity fail to follow His teachings.

  41. Jay Randal says:

Tony Snow has a perfect facial tan in the pic above, so when he is not busy being Bush’s man toy, he is off in the White House tanning booth, or having his nails done, or his hair washed and coiffed. He is very gayish.

  42. waydot says:

I just don’t understand what the hell Tony Snow is smiling about? What is that sick sort of chuckle he has when he tries clarifying his murderous, wreckless position? Please, someone explain to me how these bastards keep getting away with it!

  43. Gregor Samsa says:

“Of course. It’s a war. Things always go wrong.”

That’s not what the White House told us for months, years after the invasion, even as Iraq descended into chaos.

There were good news aplenty, Iraq was now better then ever before, and getting even better, it would be a beacon of freedom and democracy in the Middle East, etc, etc…

These people will only admit reality when the elephant in the room has grown too big to be ignored -and lies no longer work.

  44. wmholt says:

SNOW: “Yeah. Of course. It’s a war. Things always go wrong. As a matter of fact it happens in every war.”

Did Tiny Tim then ask Snow, “If it happens in every war, why did you say that you were unsure if anything had gone wrong in the Iraq war?”

The corporate elite media know not to bite the hand that feeds them. I guess that’s why blogging is so important: so few bloggers are in bed with the people they are covering.

  45. nofltwlt says:

Snow is odd (says some awful things); so much so that maybe congress should provide oversight of his position.

  46. Jericho says:

That’s ok but we should do better.. Bush, BP, Cheney, CNN, Kerry, Coca-Cola, whatever, some will say whatever the silly public wants to hear and give this silly public anything it wants or thinks(!) it needs. If anyone still wonders why they do it… Greed.. They teach us in the first ‘economics’ class, of all sciences the one that was supposed to make this a world without waste, and they are rewriting this science to justify their own terrible sins… Reality and truth made place for propaganda ages ago. Please come up with a 40second videoclip that exposes all these publicpleasers/rapists of science, language and TRUTH!!

  47. Raymond Funamoto says:

The trouble with spouting psychobabble gobbledygook from your mouth like Tony Snow does on a daily basis, as do 100% of current and former Fox news people is that after a while, you begin to believe your own lies and are unable to distinguish lies from truth–therein lies the proof of the pudding that Snow is a fool AND a knave and should have his own colostomy bag wrapped around his neck to stop his silly simpering and yap-trap spilling more demagogic jingoistic propaganda from Bushland Uber Allies!!!!!
