I am the mother of a US Army soldier who has served one tour in Iraq. He returned safely. I am sick and tired of the blame game. If you dont understand history and wars, it is evident here by the comments left. By the way, many of you cant even stick to the subject of this article.
My soldier has risked his life to give you the freedom to say the things you have said. There are always going to be wars, and there are always going to be those who volunteer to go. All is not fair in war.
Some are going to get hurt, and some are going to die. There is such evil in this world that there will never be peace. The United States of America has always fought for the oppressed, the less free.
As far as the injured soldier who lost his legs, and wanted to wear shorts, number 10 above could not have said it better. What war hero wants to show off the nubs of his injuries. It was just a matter that he could not wear shorts, and did not want to dress like everyone else would be dressed.

I'll be the liberal who says this in the gentlest terms I can think of: This "Hero" is part of a demographic that can be exploited by a pussy president with no war experience, not for the purpose of looking strong but to throw a war in the first place, because for the mere price of throwing a war, the war president now gets unlimited power with which to destroy this country (the U.S.) to whatever degree he wants to, without any checks and balances. For the last thirty years in America a standing Army has guaranteed it's own misuse. If the working class were educated, critical thinking would take the place of gung-ho, proud patriotism and the xenophobia that allows us to run roughshod over other nations for their resources.

Explain to me how you can be against the war but call this guy a hero.

I'm sorry his education cost so much but he was just duped into destroying another country.

Well, BnF, you might want to take a more careful look at the USA Today article linked at posting 119 . It is from June 2006. Here is another photo of Bush and that vet:

Again, you will note it is from June 2006.

How embarassing for you, Bnf. Your previously displays of ignorance of law and journalism were embarassing enough for you. Now, you have demonstrated a lack of basic reading skills.

The no-amputee-photos issue, Bush freaking out over men not wearing ties, his bullying, condescending treatment of the press (remember the guy with eye problems Bush gave so much grief to for wearing sunglasses?) ... It all adds up to the fact that he's a very scary control freak who only feels comfortable when everyone else in the room acknowledges that they are powerless before him. One more sign of a deranged alcoholic with an out-of-control ego and serious personality disorders.

case workers are NOTHING, unless they hold a BSW or MSW. Caseworkers such as the Bush Administration's DOD employ are probably just people they stuck in those positions with no real education on the subject matter.

Rachel, you dingbat, this thread is about amputees and the Bush Administration's treatment of them. Which is horrendous as expected. Why do you try to dismantle threads and such in this manner? We already know that is the message given to many of you trolls, disrupt the threads. It shows how desperate the right wing is, they've been wrong about everything and now that it has been shown, just pretend everything is going swimmingly and keep fooling the masses by disrupting threads with nonsense or topics that have nothing to do with the thread at hand. People who help them do this are the REAL TRAITORS TO OUR COUNTRY--just like you Rachel.

Running with an amputee who has recovered to the point that he has a prosthesis that fits and allows him to run and s terefore approaching whole is OK. Appearing with an amputee who can't walk and is therefore not whole or the equivalent is not OK. We all know what Bush is like, sweeping truth under the carpet. This is just one more example.

EFF: Legal Guide for Bloggers

Updated April 20, 2006

Whether you're a newly minted blogger or a relative old-timer, you've been seeing more and more stories pop up every day about bloggers getting in trouble for what they post.

Like all journalists and publishers, bloggers sometimes publish information that other people don't want published. You might, for example, publish something that someone considers defamatory, republish an AP news story that's under copyright, or write a lengthy piece detailing the alleged crimes of a candidate for public office.

The difference between you and the reporter at your local newspaper is that in many cases, you may not have the benefit of training or resources to help you determine whether what you're doing is legal. And on top of that, sometimes knowing the law doesn't help - in many cases it was written for traditional journalists, and the courts haven't yet decided how it applies to bloggers.

But here's the important part: None of this should stop you from blogging. Freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Internet bullies shouldn't use the law to stifle legitimate free expression. That's why EFF created this guide, compiling a number of FAQs designed to help you understand your rights and, if necessary, defend your freedom.

To be clear, this guide isn't a substitute for, nor does it constitute, legal advice. Only an attorney who knows the details of your particular situation can provide the kind of advice you need if you're being threatened with a lawsuit. The goal here is to give you a basic roadmap to the legal issues you may confront as a blogger, to let you know you have rights, and to encourage you to blog freely with the knowledge that your legitimate speech is protected.

Please note that this guide applies to people living in the US. We don't have the expertise or resources to speak to other countries' legal traditions, but we'd like to work with those who do. If you know of a similar guide for your own jurisdiction or feel inspired to research and write one, please let us know. We can link to it here.

Table of Contents
or, see an index of all the questions » http://www.eff.org/bloggers/lg/questions.php

Blogger Legal Liability Issues

The Overview of Legal Liability Issues FAQ briefly addresses some common legal issues that affect you as a publisher, especially situations where you may face legal claims or threats based on the information you published on your blog.

The Bloggers' FAQ on Intellectual Property addresses issues that arise when you publish material created by others on your blog.

The Bloggers' FAQ on Online Defamation Law provides an overview of defamation (libel) law, including a discussion of the constitutional and statutory privileges that may protect you.

The Bloggers' FAQ on Section 230 Protections discusses a powerful federal law that gives you, as a web host, protection against legal claims arising from hosting information written by third parties.

The Bloggers' FAQ on Privacy addresses the legal issues surrounding the privacy rights of people you blog about.
Bloggers As Journalists

EFF: Legal Guide for Bloggers

Updated April 20, 2006

Whether you’re a newly minted blogger or a relative old-timer, you’ve been seeing more and more stories pop up every day about bloggers getting in trouble for what they post.

Like all journalists and publishers, bloggers sometimes publish information that other people don’t want published. You might, for example, publish something that someone considers defamatory, republish an AP news story that’s under copyright, or write a lengthy piece detailing the alleged crimes of a candidate for public office.

The difference between you and the reporter at your local newspaper is that in many cases, you may not have the benefit of training or resources to help you determine whether what you’re doing is legal. And on top of that, sometimes knowing the law doesn’t help – in many cases it was written for traditional journalists, and the courts haven’t yet decided how it applies to bloggers.

But here’s the important part: None of this should stop you from blogging. Freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Internet bullies shouldn’t use the law to stifle legitimate free expression. That’s why EFF created this guide, compiling a number of FAQs designed to help you understand your rights and, if necessary, defend your freedom.

To be clear, this guide isn’t a substitute for, nor does it constitute, legal advice. Only an attorney who knows the details of your particular situation can provide the kind of advice you need if you’re being threatened with a lawsuit. The goal here is to give you a basic roadmap to the legal issues you may confront as a blogger, to let you know you have rights, and to encourage you to blog freely with the knowledge that your legitimate speech is protected.

Please note that this guide applies to people living in the US. We don’t have the expertise or resources to speak to other countries’ legal traditions, but we’d like to work with those who do. If you know of a similar guide for your own jurisdiction or feel inspired to research and write one, please let us know. We can link to it here.

Here is the link that so many of you apparently couldn't find.

The interesting thing is that one of the images shown in the search results is linked through another liberal blog site that condemns Bush for allowing publication of a picture showing him with a war amputee. Between that site and this one, it sounds like he's damned no matter what he does.

If the left spent half that energy supporting the war on terror, the troops they claim to be concerned about, would probably be home by now.

OK. STOP THE TRUCK.

The "Right" had a blank check for 6 years. Now your saying that the left could have had the troops home in 6 weeks?

Are you saying that the "Right" has been totally incompetent in prosecuting the War on Terror? After all, the "Right" has dumped everything it could into the effort, for 6 years, to no avail.

Then why the sudden change in policy now? How come no photos of flag-draped coffins? How come your fuhrer doesn't go to the funerals of women and men he sent into harm's way?

Why do you still support someone who commits War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity?

Sorry, loser. The photo didn't clearly show the wonded soldier to be an amputee, nor did the caption indicate the soldier to be an amputee.

And, is this the most recent photo you could come up with, 2003? Has your fuhrer avoided photo ops with wounded soldiers for the past FOUR YEARS?!?

This shows how cowardly the Bush administration is. Way to betray the troops, Bush. And also the f*cking cowardly, hypocritical Republicans in Congress who lie that the Democrats are betraying the troops. Republicans are lying cowards.
