Snow: President Bush ‘Certainly’ Was ‘Aware Of The Conditions In The Wards’ At Walter Reed»

In today’s press briefing, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Tony Snow about the Washington Post’s two-part series over the weekend, highlighting the Walter Reed hospital’s dilapidated conditions. Snow stated that “the president certainly has been aware of the conditions in the wards where he has visited, and visited regularly.” Snow also affirmed that the administration was aware of Walter Reed’s conditions “before the articles appeared in the paper.” Watch it:

Screenshot

The Army began repairs on the facilities yesterday, only after the media reports and intense public criticism. Apparently, Bush is fine with U.S. troops living in squalid conditions — as long as no one else knows about it.

(The Progress Report has more on the state of veterans under the Bush administration. Read it and sign up to receive the newsletter HERE.)

Digg It!

Transcript:

QUESTION: You responded to me a moment ago that the administration was aware of this before the articles appeared in the paper.

SNOW: That is my understanding.

But, again, this is something that’s an action item over at the Department of Defense and in particular the Department of the Army. I am not fully briefed on the activities of who knew what, when. And I suggest…

QUESTION: Was the president aware of it? Was the White House aware of it?

SNOW: I am not certain when this — when we first became aware of it.

Now, the president certainly has been aware of the conditions in the wards where he has visited, and visited regularly. And we also have people from Walter Reed regularly over to the White House as the guests, sometimes in fairly large numbers.

  1. tom baker Says:

WOW - thanks for making it look even worse for Dubbie and the Republican’ts, tony.

  2. Jay Randal Says:

Tony Snow is a criminal liar, so he must resign immediately. Plus if Bush cared about the conditions he saw at VA hospitals, then why did he do absolutely nothing to correct them?

  3. WaltTheMan Says:

    #3 - Jay Randal,

  4. Sharon Says:

Snow, you are a bush whore….Impeach and jail them all…Blessings

  5. JMiller Says:

You’re missing the point; the president delegated [doing anything useful] to [somebody else]. Always has, always does, always will. Only thing he shows up for are photo ops which allow him to take credit and look like a man of the people.

Seriously, I know we’re trying to be progressive, but let’s also be realistic. George wrote a memo; what more did you want from the MBA president? The buck to actually stop with him?

  6. dlet Says:

Of course he didn’t know about the bad areas. He probably was shown the first room that was in great condition, shook a hand, took a photo, said something stupid and left. Why should he worry his pretty little mind over the horrid conditions and lack of care when he has two wars to run and another to plan for.

  7. ggibson Says:

“You think Vietnam was bad? Vietnam is nothing next to Kosovo.”

  8. Pinson Says:

dlet @ 7 is right, Tony is leaving an out for the president:

“the president certainly has been aware of the conditions in the wards where he has visited, and visited regularly.”

In other words, we only see the good stuff.

  9. Willy Says:

If Bush was aware of the conditions at Walter Reed and did nothing, then it means he approved these conditions. Why does Bush hate the troops? Why does Bush betray the troops?

  10. joe in oklahoma Says:

this needs to be linked to the GOP Congress as well as the White House. bush will be gone (tho not soon enough)
we need to get rid of the GOP and their lack of oversight.

  11. Jay Randal Says:

I am sure that former Senate GOP leader Frist knew about the horrible conditions at VA hospitals, plus he was a surgeon himself. I can see why Frist retired in 2006, because he knew the crap was going to hit the fan over mistreatment of wounded soldiers.

  12. CONservative Says:

Yeah, but it’s still those of us that are against this war-for-profit that don’t support the troops, right?

  13. Mimir Says:

You know the Bush administration is slipping when they fail to deploy the “nobody could have foreseeen” defense.

  14. Bob Says:

Why would anyone be upset at the conduct of Michael J. Wagner, the wonderful individual who ran “the Army’s largest effort to help the most vulnerable soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center,” the (it seems) inaccurately named Medical Family Assistance Center (all per The Washington Post)? Is there anything strange or objectionable about a Bush Administration appointee to an important governmental position finding and exploiting a new and exciting way to profit from the Iraq War? The Republican Party has been allowed to freely place its ghouls in positions where they could skim off profits from arms, private “security” forces and from military field transport, support and supply services so as to increase their ability to make future political contributions; why not allow a party vulture take it one step further? Isn’t that the “Circle of Death” the kids sing about in The Lion King?

Instead of questioning his conduct, we should be honoring good old Mike Wagner for his adherence to the virtues of free enterprise in a setting which would bring out the altruistic and ethical instincts of all but the most hardened hearts (e.g., Dick Cheney). Wagner should get the Halliburton Medal of “Not So Free Dom”! The sheer beauty of the scam (oops, Greed Based Initiative) - - rebuffing wounded veteran complaints with indifference while being paid as an administrator at Walter Reed, while at the same time soliciting donations for a private foundation (of which he was the Chairman and of which Thomas R. Wagner (any relation?) was the Executive Director) touted as being able to help out where the government fell flat. The sheer beauty of Dr. Wagner’s (he is a Ph.D you know) scheme shines through in a May 5, 2006 press release of that foundation, as follows:
“Because of budgetary and mission limitations of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs they are not able to address all the social, emotional and spiritual needs of the veterans and their families. The Military, Veteran and Family Assistance Foundation (MVFAF) is a tax exempt 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that provides services and resources beyond the budgetary and mission capabilities of the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs and other National, State and Local veterans’ agencies. . . DONATIONS ARE NEEDED TO CONTINUE THIS EXPERIENCE FOR MILITARY AND VETERAN FAMILIES.”

No wonder Dr. Wagner wants to take the Foundation from a $237,000 pilot project (who gave the seed money?) to a $145 million foundation by 2011 (again per The Washington Post). I am sure that neither he, nor his assumed brother, Tom, would ever take a salary. No, people with their heart in it are just doing it for the love.

God how I love the Grand Old Party!

There was a sitcom on Comedy Central that was made by Trey Park and Matt Stone, of South Park, etc. fame, called “That’s My Bush” when George W Bush first took office. The whole show was based on Laura Being drunk all the time, Bush was a complete idiot and Cheney ran the government behind Bush’s back.

    Sound familiar?

    Comment by Spudge_Boy

    I didn’t know that Comedy Central did documentaries… :)

  24. Jay Randal Says:

RUCerious > Bush has an aide who carries sanitizing hand wash, so whenever Bush shakes someone’s hand or touches anything he perceives as dirty, then the aide washes Bush’s hands. Dubya even has his urine and poop collected, so the man is a complete lunatic.

Wasn’t that one of Howard Hughes’ mania’s in his later years of dementia?

  28. Wayne Says:

And Bush has full knowledge of whathas been going on.
Just like he knew who outed a cia agent.

Why has Bush not been impeached yet, Democrats?

  29. mroom Says:

This is one of those things where he’s (Bush) damned if he did & damned if he didn’t. Either way it was inexusable. If he knew then why did he accept it? If he didn’t know, then why didn’t he know?

    Comment by Spudge_Boy

Wasn’t there supposed to be some cartoon that had this administration as schoolkids? Condi, Cheney, Rummy, Bush, etc all as rugrats/south park/stooges.

  31. Jay Randal Says:

Raven I am serious. Bush has his urine and poop collected, because he believes Russians or other spies will have it tested to prove he uses drugs or has a rare disease. When Bush gave that note to Condi Rice, at the UN, about needing to go to the bathroom meant he needed the special team to collect his urine or poop. A special toilet goes with him wherever he travels to in US or overseas. You can google this fact, because the Austrians reported on his special needs when he visited their country. Bush is now mentally deranged like Howard Hughs.

  32. Zimzone Says:

I disagree with the statement Bush has his own waste collected.

Seems to me he’s been dumping on all of us for years!

  35. Jay Randal Says:

Who knows Bush might collect his nail and toe clippings too and his cut hair collected and incinerated as well. He has gone insane, but nobody in DC will face up to it.

  36. Raven Says:

Working with my new found knowledge regarding Dubya and waste management, I have an idea for unemployed young Republicans:
They can spend a year of community service collecting and removing cow-pies from the National Forests. Hell, make it two years!

  37. Zooey Says:

If Bush is aware of the conditions at Walter Reed, he needs to be placed under care in the worst room they have — with an open wound.

  38. Jay Randal Says:

I just read an article last night on the Green Zone in Baghdad, Iraq, and all the special stuff in the zone for priviledged Americans there. They can get booze and have night clubs too. What caught my eye in the article was that a young GOPer guy of 22 was hired by Halliburton to run the one of the food operations at Saddam’s former palace. The guy’s only qualification was he was a College Republican and Bush lover. I hope he gives food poisoning to his fellow GOPers in Green Zone.

    Comment by Zooey

Bush is full aware of the whole VA system being in shambles. Veteran voices have fallen on deaf ears. Republicans have cancelled the once yearly meeting with veterans, since Bush has been in office.
The Republicans knew and don’t care.

They knew, because veterans groups have been trying to tell them all along.
Personally I blame Bush, the Republicans, the Democrats and the media for ignoring this kind of crap so long.

    Support the troops, my ass…..

  42. Zooey Says:

    Support the troops, my ass…..
    Comment by Wayne

    You’re right, Wayne.

Many Americans support the troops, as long as it’s not too inconvenient for them, if it doesn’t take too much effort, if it doesn’t raise their taxes, and as long as they don’t have to see anything that might look icky.

  43. Wayne Says:

    Zooey,

There are currently tort claims being filed by veteran groups, because those vets that have written about the issues, even disabled vets, have had their personal information given to Republican Anti-veteran groups that have been harrassed for daring to speak out.

In an effort to “chill” Veteran Activists that write any articles unfavorable to the Bush Administration, Bush Republican Hate Groups are being illegally given, personal information, and classified records, about Veteran Activists that is supposed to be protected by the Privacy Act.
The Veteran Hate Groups are then using the illegally obtained documents to harass Disabled Veterans, and to intimidate them in the free exercise of their civil rights.

Clearly the President (obviously for decades if its that bad) hasn’t done a good job being proactive on that but he’s rather protected by his handlers I think and like someone else posted, probably never saw the bad areas.

Wouldn’t conditions at a govt hospital be more under the purvue of Congress and the Armed Services committee or the Health Dept anyway? Seems like a ridiculous thing to throw on the President.

Or wait, I know, I need to call him some kind of derogatory nickname and absolutely never refer to him by title or with any modicum of respect.

  57. tom baker Says:

well DRxJ, there’s andreas here, but he seems to be missing the important point that bldg 18 is being used for overflow capacity (hadn’t been used, much less considered, during Presidencies since Nixon) because of the huge (and negligently “unforeseen”) numbers of casualties, and that it was reviewed and approved for use by DoD. not to mention that upon even his very first visit, a percipient and responsive president who cared for real about the welfare of the troops he sent into harm’s way could have, very easily, done something about the situation.

aside from him, i’ve also noted the scarcity of conservative-americans’ comments on this glaring issue. i even took the opportunity to invite the one with initials v v (fka MA?), who did seem to rank the bashing of the Teachers’ union a high priority, to come on over and speak her truth, but alas, I will have to make it through this one without her meager wisdom.

they won’t come to defend this - it’s the light that’s finally piercing their shroud, and the coming years will see them all slinking back into the dark shadows, to brood and moon over their radios, hoping that something horrible will happen again that will allow them back out into the light of day.

If that were true, and that’s a mighty big “if”, why didn’t the Republicans say anything about it then? You’d think they would have jumped all over something like that. Apparently it wasn’t that important to them back then, either. Plus, if conditions were bad then, they must have gotten even worse by now.

Part of me wants the Republicans to stop the lying and part of me doesn’t because it’s just so gosh darned entertaining.

Respect? Respect for what?!!! He is the most disrespectful president we’ve ever had. When he starts respecting the Constitution, I might think about it. In the meantime, he’s trashed this country’s reputation around the world, he’s trashed the office of the president, and the list of things he’s trashed in this country is too long to even get started on right now. I don’t say he’s a lying, moronic, worthless little jerk because I hate him. I hate him because he’s a lying, moronic, worthless little jerk. Apparently, you haven’t noticed that.

    DRxJ @ 48
It all goes back to Clinton. Every failure this administration has had is Clinton’s fault. But they condemn themselves because that would mean they knew of this as the Iraq and Afghanistan troops started being warehoused at Walter Reed and didn’t even say anything let alone do anything. As bad as the living conditions are its the treatment (not medical treatment) they are receiving. Having to find their own way around the facilkity while impaired by their wounds is atrocious. They should be sought out, picked up and escorted to and from their appointments. By wheels if necessary. They do it at the VA and civilian hospitals. The Pentagon throws money at failed weapons systems to keep their Defense Contractors in business but they don’t want to spend money on these defense systems because they are spent weapons.
And Andreas, The Defense Department and Secretary of the Army are responsible for Walter Reed. The Secretary already put the responsibility for failure on “non-commissioned officers.” These are grunts with stripes not shoulder boards.. Just like Abu-Grahib, no officers will bite the dust. And they weren’t powerless. The outrage generated by Dana Priest and Anne Hull has them already moving. Even though they are only patching moldy drywall instead of replacing it. I only hope the spotlight stays on this situation when the next Brittany head shaving or Nicole Body hearing comes along.

And so it is with the wounded vets. Anyone, Dem, GOP, Ind, who taken the time to visit vets knew what was going on. Hell, anyone who had been through the Viet Nam experience knew how it would be!
No excuses or passes for ANY politician on this one. NO WAY NO HOW
