Snow Backtracks, Now Claims Bush Didn’t Know Of Walter Reed Neglect

During yesterday’s White House press briefing, Tony Snow tried to play down the neglect uncovered at Walter Reed by portraying it as old news. President Bush “certainly has been aware of the conditions in the wards where he has visited, Snow said, affirming that the administration was aware of Walter Reed’s conditions “before the articles appeared in the paper.”

The White House has since backtracked from Snow’s comments. In a small addendum added to the bottom of yesterday’s briefing transcript on the White House website, a note now reads that Bush “first learned of the troubling allegations regarding Walter Reed from the stories this weekend in the Washington Post,” and that he is “deeply concerned” by the conditions:

transcriptas.gif

Following the reversal, Snow told the Washington Post that “he did not know why the president, who has visited the facility many times in the past five years, had not heard about these problems before.”

Asked yesterday if Bush may talk about this scandal at some point in the future, Snow answered, “No.

“In all my years of public service I have never witnessed national political leaders as corrupt, incompetent and subservient to powerful special interests as George Bush and the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress.

The level of cynicism and crass political calculation that characterizes the Bush White House and the Republican-controlled Congress is truly breathtaking.

Critical public policy issues — from national security and global warming to public health and retirement security — seem to be formulated solely on the basis of what will please the special interests most important to maintaining the Republican Party’s stranglehold on the federal government. The needs of the American people be damned.

And this reprehensible behavior is aided and abetted by the complete and utter lack of oversight of the Bush administration by the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress. The needs of the American people be damned.”

Andrew Stone, 23, was charged with three counts of assault and battery. A magistrate released Stone on his own recognizance and he was ordered to have no further contact with the victims.

I agree that cuts to the VA are an important issue. But the condition of Building 18 certainly is as well. The fact that Democrats have been lambasted from here to infinity and beyond for “not supporting the troops”, the hypocrisy of Building 18, under management of the executive branch (i.e Republican BushCo) is very relevant. The mold and other deplorable conditions can be negative factors in the recovery of these troops – either directly through infection, unsafe mobility, etc or indirectly through the psychological message they must get from those conditions. Talk about demoralizing! Progressives should be able to multi-task in holding the Bush administration accountable. We need to focus on all of it.

Oil states plan weapons buying binge
By Jim Krane, Associated Press Writer, February 16, 2007

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates –Deep fears about the war in Iraq and growing tension between the United States and Iran are driving the wealthy oil states of the Persian Gulf to go on shopping sprees for helicopters, ships and tanks, officials say.

Some 900 weapons makers and security firms from around the world, including the U.S. and Russia, will compete for those military buys at the IDEX military show that opens Sunday in Abu Dhabi. At stake are contracts predicted to soar past the $2 billion signed at the last such show two years ago.

“The shopping lists are directly correlated to the threat perception,” said military analyst Mustafa Alani of the Dubai-based Gulf Research Center.

“For the past 15 years, these countries didn’t invest a lot in rearming.”
But now they’re rushing to upgrade.

The biggest fear in the region is that Iraq will collapse into civil war and its violence will spill into nearby Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, Alani said.

My point is that i’m a reluctant realist now. I know WE can multi-task the trespasses of this har criminal enterprise…but most americans just don’t have either the: time, inclination toward punditry, excess mental capacity, or emotional fortitude to internalize this scale of deception and malice. My, first take on the WR piece was that if mad folks ain’t lined up already (see: Iraqi conventional weapons stocks unguarded, inadequate body armor, illegal domestic surveillance, kidnapping/torture, GOP stalling debate, missing billions, etc) …several moldy walls won’t do it.
Maybe your right in that average folks can more readily understand moldy walls here.. than lives/billions/clout squandered there. I must believe that we progressives (multi-tasking b/w promoting our agenda and uncovering theirs) will have failed in our concission and articulation if W goes down for being ‘the moldy wall’ president.
    RE#47

Comment #1 shows the typical vicious liberal perspective. Never let facts get in the way of a good hate. Amputees are in Ward 57 of Main Pavillion, a place the President has visited. There also in Mogolone House when they are well enough to not need 24/7 medical care and nursing.

The building in question is outside the fence and it normally holds 50 people, not 80. These are the folks who are ambulatory and are there primariliy because they still need long term out patient care. I know because I routinely stop in with something and leave for their dayroom.

Amazing that Dana Priest and Anne Hull spent that much time in Moglone and never heard how John Kerry got booed.

  86. Bluestocking says:

In a small addendum added to the bottom of yesterday’s briefing transcript on the White House website, a note now reads that Bush “first learned of the troubling allegations regarding Walter Reed from the stories this weekend in the Washington Post,” and that he is “deeply concerned” by the conditions…

    ***************************************

C’mon, Squealer — which is it? You can’t have been telling the truth both times! The reporter yesterday was very specific when he asked whether Bush was aware of the situation at Walter Reed. Here’s the direct quote from the transcript published here at TP yesterday:

QUESTION: You responded to me a moment ago that the administration was aware of this before the articles appeared in the paper.

    SNOW: That is my understanding.

But, again, this is something that’s an action item over at the Department of Defense and in particular the Department of the Army. I am not fully briefed on the activities of who knew what, when. And I suggest…

QUESTION: Was the president aware of it? Was the White House aware of it?

SNOW: I am not certain when this — when we first became aware of it.

The responses clearly suggest that the White House was aware of the situation at Walter Reed as described in the Washington Post articles — but today, you’re falling back on a variation of your tired and trite excuse that “nobody could have foreseen, etc., etc.” So either he didn’t know and you were lying yesterday — or he did know and you’re lying today. Which is it?

I’d never heard that before. They should call themselves the Celebration News Network. Whoopee!

  89. Bluestocking says:

One of the things which I’d also like to know is why the media took so long to pay attention to this story — considering that according to a report this morning on AmericaBlog, Salon did a report on this two years ago! Not only does this suggest that these problems have been in existence for at least two years and still haven’t been sufficiently addressed, but also that the MSM didn’t consider the story important enough two years ago to really give it much or indeed any attention. Disgusting.

As far as the ‘illogic’ of my assessment for why our loyal occupiers and the respective iraqi communities are experiencing so much violence…i’d be interested in your thoughts on what that fuel consists of. Thanks.

As for insurgent violence, I don’t think you need to look any further than the occupation of their country by a military force that regularly humiliates them and frequently kills their friends, neighbors, and loved ones. The rest is largely due to perpetual vengeance and a struggle for power between Sunnis and Shiites, aka “civil war”.

Patients at Walter Reed booed Kerry? Well, boy are they in for a rude awakening when they get out of there and start having to use their VA benefits. If they think that Kerry’s not on their side and that the GOP is, I hope someone will be kind enough to explain to them who it was that cut the f*ck out of their benefits and forced them to have to drive 100 miles to the nearest clinic after a one year wait for an appointment. Clue: It sure in the hell wasn’t Kerry.

    Happy posting.

Nice to hear Snowjob reads Thinkgrogress. Tony your a poor liar and Bush is the true example of Axis of Evil. Everyone knows Bush doesn’t give a damn about our troops check Walter Reed and the thousands that die in the Iraq civil war. This Administration as destroyed the US reputation around the world we’re now known as a country that lies and illegally invades. Yes so many world leaders knew Bush was trying to control the world and steal the Middle East Oil. Blair is now trying to clean up his mess as the UK soldiers go home. Don’t worry History will show Bush as the worst President in the History of America. As stupid as Bush is he doesn’t even know US history he’s making it up as he goes. Maybe the White House should ask Iran or Russia to teach you American History. Question as Bush finished the book he started reading 6 years ago My Pet Goat. Let’s hope he finishes it be for the impeachment hearings start.

this big spike in troll activity is evidence that the PR firms in DC, retained by the regime, are working overtime and using every dirty trick they know of to derail the popular momentum that is buiding fast, and leading inexorably toward impeachment and the end of this wasteful tragedy that they call a war.

  103. jak fulasofy says:

i hate these liars too but it does seem think progress is a little sneaky on this one–if that is the only quote admiting they knew about the conditions then the case for the flip flop is weak-it only says that bush knew the conditions of the wards he went to, and they probably kept them away from these conditions–so there is no contradiction–thinkprogress, isnt there more blatant examples that you could focus on from this corrupt administration

If at first, you don’t suceed, try, try, try again:

    Spudge_Boy,
Some how, my first post on the source code matter vanished into the TP bit bucket. Source code can be written in assembler, compiler or machine language. The stuff that exists on your hard drive or ROM exists as machine language. There are tools that convert machine language to assembler. These tools do not convert machine language into source because there is no method that will span the different compilers.
I have actually written some interrupt vectors that will not yield to the disassembly tools because they exploit certain quirks in the Intel architecture.

  112. Condi 08 Supporter says:

Dr. Condoleezza Rice: magnificently accomplished and educated woman; brilliant scholar; concert pianist; gracious lady; presidential confident and trusted advisor; dedicated public servant; political giant and National Security Advisor to The President of the United States of America. And now, Secretary of State of the most powerful country on the planet. The first African-American female Secretary of State in our history.

Why would such an accomplished American woman be so savagely and viciously trashed and dishonored by the liberal elites and the left-wing Democratic Party? Not only trashed, but insulted, bad-mouthed, ridiculed and humiliated. What does a girl have to do to win the accolades and approval of these people?

Condi Rice has garnered the scorn of her Democratic colleagues, not because of what she has accomplished, but because of who and what she is. She is a black American, who is guilty of an unspeakable crime in liberal eyes. Her crime? She does not worship at the altar of the Democratic Party. Condi Rice has committed the unpardonable sin.She has dared to carve out her own political path while black.

And so has any black American sinned who dares to look the Democratic Party in their face and say, “You are wrong. I don’t need you.I don’t want you.I can do better than you”. And so she has.

The Democrats haughtily assume they own black America and their votes. They ridicule and belittle any black who dares to wander off their liberal “plantation”.

They think any black American who seeks a life free of Democratic ownership, is stupid, ignorant, uneducated and misinformed. Condi Rice, in particular, has been labeled a bald-faced liar, a puppet, a sycophant, and a mindless, thoughtless, robotic, brainwashed slave of George W. Bush. In their eyes, any black who dares to snub the Democrats is a traitor.

Countless cartoons and articles have insulted and offended her and her blackness in ways we have not seen since the pre-Civil War south.

Condi Rice dared to tell the Democratic owners that she believes the conservative mindset is her home. She dares to be a black Republican. And so they savaged her.

The liberal elites cry foul! She is black and not allowed to be a conservative! She is beholden to them, and only them, for the freedom she has attained. They own her and she has not paid them back for the favors they bestowed upon her and her people. Not only is she uppity, she is ungrateful!

The Democratic Party is the party of Sen. Robert Byrd, a former Grand Dragon in the Ku Klux Klan. This pitiful excuse for a human being still throws the “N” word around like it is butter, and is never corrected by his liberal cronies. This sad, pathetic man has the blind hubris to say Condi Rice is not fit to serve, when he himself is not fit, nor shall he ever be fit, to walk the hallowed halls of Congress.

Bulletin to Democratic liberals: Condi Rice owes you nothing. Clarence Thomas, who your leader, the disgraceful Harry Reid, called “an embarrassment to the court”, owes you nothing. You don’t own them anymore. They are not beholden to you for anything.Stings, doesn’t it?

But isn’t that the country you’ve always preached about? At least until someone dares to leave your plantation. Then you turn back the clock and call them lying buffoons who don’t have enough sense to hold high office; too stupid to see that George Bush is a war mongering fraud.

And this same fraud just happens to be bringing freedom to a tyrannized people and is changing the face of the planet we live on; something you people have never even thought about doing and wouldn’t have the courage of conviction or the stomach to do it anyway.

And not one of you, not Robert Byrd, not Barbara Boxer, not Ted Kennedy and not Harry Reid is fit to tie Dr. Condoleezza Rice’s shoelaces.

Get over yourselves. The slaves have been freed. Get used to it. And in case you hadn’t noticed, they were freed by a Republican. His name was Abraham Lincoln.

This is actually a good development, as it reinforces something I’ve suspected for a while:

Tony Snow is the new President. He only gets confused when he’s trying to stick by the old story that Bush is in charge.
