The Academy Awards are tomorrow night. As most everyone knows, Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth is nominated for Best Documentary. But Melissa Etheridge’s song from the film, “I Need To Wake Up,” is also nominated for Best Original Song. Via Digby, here’s the video:
:-)
Congratulations Al Gore & Melissa Ethridge on your nominations. I won’t be watching, but I hope you win.

Everyone should try to cut their energy use by at least 25%.
Turn down the hot water heater, turn lights off when leaving a room, use energy efficient appliances, unplug appliances when not in use, set computers to hibernate, drive less (you don’t need to go shopping!) Simple stuff!
This is it. We are in a crisis. It is not down the road. It is now!
Do something about it!

hey, FAIZ -
you really should put the DATE on these last five (5) threads !!!
another tip/request:
when you post an UPDATE to a thread, could you put a TIME on that?
thanks!
February 24th, 2007 at 2:00 pmkaty,
I’ve noticed that the posts for the current day don’t have a date until the next day, then it shows up. Yeah, I’d like to see times on updates, too.
February 24th, 2007 at 2:12 pmOK, sorry, but that song really sucked. Gore will win the Best Documentary hands down, which he knew the moment he decided to make it. But come on. Gimme a friggin break.
February 24th, 2007 at 2:14 pm#3, they should but they won’t.
What’s your plan B?
February 24th, 2007 at 2:29 pmSeixon even shows up for global warming songs?
That’s funny.
February 24th, 2007 at 2:50 pmThis is clearly not Melissa Etheridge’s best song–not by a longshot–and was clearly picked for political purposes. It’s precisely this kind of thing which caused me to stop watching the Academy Awards years ago.
February 24th, 2007 at 2:50 pmThough I prefer witty, funny, caustic and downright hilarious songs like those from MONTY PYTHON’S THE MEANING OF LIFE(tm) like
February 24th, 2007 at 2:57 pm“The Meaning of Life,” “Galaxy Song,” “Penis Song,” or “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” from MONTY PYTHON’S LIFE OF BRIAN(tm), or even gritty songs like “Life’s A Bitch And Then You Die,” I think there is a need for songs like “I Need To Wake Up.” Therefore I am rooting for “I Need To Wake Up” and AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH to both win at The Academy Awards!!!!! You GO, Al Gore and Melissa Etheridge!!!!!
Melissa Etheridge has quite an extensive songbook, and this one is purposeful and blends the message with the music…I doubt it will win, however.
I think the song is well-used at the end of Gore’s documentary, because it is accompanied by factoids which are intended to inspire all of us to act on our own impact on the environment.
Thanks, Al, for the important movie. And thanks, Melissa, for putting a moving message into song!

Funny thing is this actually might get me to watch for the second time in the last 20 plus years. Care to guess the other year I watched?
How about I give you a clue: Michael Moore!

February 24th, 2007 at 4:29 pmjust thought the date was always there…
and thanks for the second… we’ll see…
OK, sorry, but that song really sucked.Comment by Seixon — February 24, 2007 @ 2:14 pm
Sucking is what you and Vince P do Seixon – don’t put your private behaviors on everyone else Foley boy.
Gore will win the Best Documentary hands down, which he knew the moment he decided to make it. But come on. Gimme a friggin break.
Comment by Seixon — February 24, 2007 @ 2:14 pm
You need more than a break, friggin moron.
February 24th, 2007 at 5:56 pmMelissa Etheridge must be stopped. I’m not one to think Bush’s logic is sound, but in this case….well, you’re either against her or you’re with the terrorists.
February 24th, 2007 at 6:35 pmQuestion, if Gore does not win the award, will there be a recount?

That was beneath you, Robert.
Of course, I could be completely wrong.

It is not the message I dislike, just the messenger. You know my feelings about Gore. I do hope the film does well, though.
Maybe Melissa Ethridge will wear leather like she did on her 2002 tour. Or discuss animal testing.
What is the word I am looking for? It starts with an “H” and means “a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs. “
February 24th, 2007 at 7:58 pmI hope it wins.
February 24th, 2007 at 8:06 pmOy, Robert.
Looking for the HYPOCRITE again?
If she claims to be a vegan, and I don’t know if she does, then it would be hypocritical to wear leather. Being against animal testing does not preclude one from wearing leather. that was a real stretch, Robert, I hope you didn’t hurt yourself.
February 24th, 2007 at 8:15 pmGawd I love that song! The more you listen, the more you WANT to hear it. It grows on you! I think it will win!
February 24th, 2007 at 8:36 pmHahaha.
“I Need to Wake Up (And Smell the Coffin)”
There’s a better title for that song.
February 24th, 2007 at 9:16 pmComment by Zooey
She is a member and a spokes person for PETA. A group that is against animal testing and and wearing animal products. But she advocates wearing animal hide and medical testing when it is for her benefit.
What would you call her then?
February 24th, 2007 at 9:33 pmGeez, hacker Bob.. quoting from a 1999 article in which Ms Etheridge basically defended animal testing IF it could heal sick humans.. What does that have to do with her performance of this Oscar nominated song? You don’t have to be a vegan, a vegetarian, or even a Democrat to believe in global climate changes. Oh.. the article (from 1999) noted that she was trying to distance herself from PETA. I don’t recall reading about, or seeing her with any connection to this organization over the last few years. Perhaps you have a more recent link that shows this connection. If not, I think you owe the lady an apology.

I didn’t know that stuff. Actually I didn’t care enough to know it, so I’m glad you do.
I’d call her a Oscar winning lamed-assed hypocrite. :)
February 24th, 2007 at 10:30 pmAnd Robert? If old hippie woman is right — you owe me a big one.

I do not doubt global climate change. You are correct, you do not have to be a vegan, democrat, etc. to believe it. It is a fact.
Look on Amazon dot com. PETA is still selling products with Melissa Ethridge’s image on them. So, that is still a connection, is it not?
February 24th, 2007 at 11:08 pmCool song I hope it wins Best Song Sunday night.
February 24th, 2007 at 11:47 pmBob.. the Amazon marketplace is selling collector’s items.. Melissa Etheridge’s album covers and publicity shots from the time she did the nude photo shoot for PETA… prior to 1999. Now if that is a current link, do I get to go back to being in my early 50’s instead of a crusty old 60 yr old hippie woman?

Ok, hippie woman, you are right, i owe you an apology. I have been googleing as I have been posting an there is an article about Etheridge denouncing PETA
ROCK SINGER ETHERIDGE BELIEVES IN ANIMAL RESEARCH
* NABR Update, Vol. XVII, No. 2, January 24, 1996
Rock singer Melissa Etheridge admits that she made a mistake in her past support for PETA and for animal rights during an interview in the January 23 issue of “The Advocate”. The singer recently posed with her companion for a PETA anti-fur ad. Etheridge explained, “I was contacted by people looking for cures for AIDS who were saying, ‘I can’t believe you helped PETA, because they don’t support animal testing’ … So I’ve made a decision not to do any more visible work for PETA. … My father died of cancer, and I’ve lost too many friends to AIDS. So, I do believe in animals losing their lives to eradicate cancer and AIDS from our lives; I believe in that.”
Now, about that time machine…….
February 25th, 2007 at 1:02 amThank you Bob, for both the apology and for acknowledging your error. And that’s why you’d never make a good neocon! There’s hope for you young man, and a spot in the time machine.
February 25th, 2007 at 1:15 amHow can someone attend college and yet be so STUPID at the same time? A look at our friends(and enemies) across the aisle and the dogshit they convey about Democrats or anyone “Not Like Them” for example and to wit:
————————————————————————-
College Republicans Apology letter
To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to express my sincere and deepest regret to Dean of Seaver College, Dr. David Baird, Professor Dan Caldwell, Republicans, Democrats, and everyone else who was affected by a recent Facebook message that was sent to members of the Facebook group “College Republicans.†I would also like to make clear that I was not speaking for the Pepperdine College Republicans club, but on my own. The message was careless and inexcusable and I humbly ask for forgiveness from anyone who was hurt by my words.
Specifically, I’d like to apologize for the following actions:
1. A statement about “chastising†the Dean of Seaver College, Dr. David Baird. If I had it to do over, I would have made clear that I was suggesting to our officers and members that they contact Dr. Baird and respectfully recommend speakers that share our beliefs. I now understand that my words were disrespectful to the Dean and I am very sorry.
2. My comment about making John Kerry feel “unwelcome.†Although I do not agree with Senator Kerry politically, he is entitled to respectful treatment at all times and I do not condone any kind of disruptive or disrespectful behavior. I realize now that someone could use my statement to justify improper behavior and I sincerely apologize for not choosing my words more carefully.
3. Insinuating that John Kerry is a traitor. Just because someone has a different opinion does not make them a traitor and I am sorry for using that label.
4. My use of implied profanity. I understand that this is not consistent with the Christian mission of Pepperdine University.
While I wrote a good deal of the message in a joking and non-serious manner, I realize that not everyone viewed it in the same light. I have definitely learned from this experience. It is important to always speak and act professionally and respectfully, especially in correspondence that can enter the public forum. I will not make these same mistakes again and I am truly sorry for the way I came across online.
Sincerely,
Ben Seale
