As a 25 year oilfield Drilling Engineer, I watched the Al Gore movie for the first time on 15.03.07 in a hotel room in Stavanger in Norway at 03.00 hrs in the morning. I was stunned. A) As an Englishman, I had no idea this guy was so bright, B) To have witnessed a USA Presidential election whereby the ignorant bible belt voted for Bush remains utterly amazing to the educated world, C) The bible belt, of which I am a Scientist and a Believer, will be confused in your country because they are so dumb that the rest of the world is utterly fed up with your American version of religion, D) Vote this man for President and get some BRAINS in your leadership, E) If you believe in his Ice Cores then you are completely screwed on your +/- 4000 yr Biblical calculation. F) The World needs a Leader and you guys in the USA are so Stupid, you couldn't see when you had one. What did you give us... Bush...Are you proud ? Good.... well noone else on this planet actually is. Fellow Americans.. change your diet, or disappear and give the world a break.

Congratulations to Vice President Al Gore on his Oscar win!

Perhaps now he can start an example by reducing the 221,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity his home consumed in 2006, Twenty times the U.S. average. Gee, think of all those greenhouse gases pumped into our atmosphere just for a single home!

#271 - "People kill, people die."

Wow, pete.....very deep! You may have noticed through your diligent study of history and warfare there were not many German or Japanese soldiers without uniforms or commanders. Both enemies were brutal, yet both were trackable. Your comparisons and massaging of the numbers do not bolster your argument.

Comment by valiant venus — February 26, 2007 @ 6:29 pm

I knew you wouldn't like it. I thought you'd have a rational complaint about the data or the method. But no, you just reach into your ass and pull out "walnuts and pineapples."

How is this war different? People kill, people die. Are you suggesting that German and Japanese soldiers fight less well than Iraqi insurgents? Or, that Iraqi GIs fight less well than WW2 GIs?

Maybe you think German and Japanese soldiers "fight fair," unlike their Iraqi counterparts. I doubt any veterans from Malmedy or Bataan would agree.

$30000 per year for gas and electric bill just for 1 year in 1 house. add that to all the fuel his private jet burns, and all the CO2 he produces, and i would say that adds up to some serious hypocricy.

The environment is so important to Gore that he sucks up more electricity in a month than an average household does in a year. He travels by Jet all over the world. Award was purely political just like the Dixie Chicks grammys.

[Please pardon if this is a double-post.]
Mr. Gibson,
You misunderstand my remarks if you think they suggest of me "you did not do any research on your own even though the Internet has been available for many years now."
Although I'm no scientist, I've been engaged in the process of reading and sorting out the published science concerning the environment for more than 35 years now. As I've followed the debates over the last 20 or so years, I've been saddened to see many truly concerned and engaged climate scientists effectively sidelined by ill-informed activists, marketing specialists, and lawyers who've stolen the podium from them.
I do confess no small measure of resentment toward the upstarts who seek primarily to advance their own interests at the expense of responsible science.
OK, I'll step down from my soapbox now and let someone else speak.

(con't)
Utilizing the Precautionary Principle, let's examine the issue of cost-benefit analysis in environmental policy. Many objections to the Precautionary Principle state the negative ramifications in reacting to claims by adopting policies that may negatively effect other variables not taken into account, such as the economy, while not preventing any disaster or there not being any disaster to prevent (a “the sky is falling” argument so to speak). I will attempt to debunk the Precautionary Principle in regards to economic disaster from adopting environmentally conscious policy. When it comes to assigning economic value to functioning ecosystems, the problem is not that the values are low or undefined, but rather that they are so high as to be almost beyond calculation. James Lovelock (among others) suggests looking at the Earth as a worker presenting us a bill for services rendered. Such services include air conditioning, water purification, irrigation, and humidification. Lovelock calculates that an acre of tropical rainforest is worth £10,000 just for the value of air conditioning and irrigation alone. For the tropical rainforests as a whole, the cost of replacing such services with our own would far exceed the gross international product. Similarly, entities such as lakes, fish populations, and coral reefs can be viewed as "natural capital" into which it is unwise (according to conventional economic wisdom) to dip. The problem, of course, is that the negative effects of degrading the ecosystem's capacity to render beneficial services and of dipping into natural capital are delayed and nonlocal rather than immediate and local, and so are likely to get short shrift from shortsighted policymakers. But this problem is endemic to policy-making in any case, and so should not be held against the cost-benefit approach.

(con’t)
Utilizing the Precautionary Principle, let’s examine the issue of cost-benefit analysis in environmental policy. Similarly, entities such as lakes, fish populations, and coral reefs can be viewed as “natural capital” into which it is unwise (according to conventional economic wisdom) to dip. The problem, of course, is that the negative effects of degrading the ecosystem’s capacity to render beneficial services and of dipping into natural capital are delayed and nonlocal rather than immediate and local, and so are likely to get short shrift from shortsighted policymakers. But this problem is endemic to policy-making in any case, and so should not be held against the cost-benefit approach.

To Cory:
Thank you for acknowledging my respect for the scientific method. I think the method is one of the greatest things we human beings have going.
A clarification is in order. When I cited the IPCC report, I wasn't endorsing it; instead I intended to call attention to (1) the unfounded statements published in the world media about the summary, and (2) the politicization of the issues within the committee itself. As with the past reports, I think you and I will again have opportunity to hear from more than a few contributors who think the Summary for Policymakers departs from their findings.
Warming happens. Humans contribute. No argument here. The devil, as always, is in the details. So far--and this is my reading of the situation--I think the case has yet to be made for a number of alleged cause-and-effect linkages between specific human activities and measured temperature changes, between measured temperature changes and observed climate patterns, and between these observations and the more dramatic climate changes some have projected.
I've been enjoying our exchange. Thank you again.
