THIS JUST IN FROM THE GLOBAL WARMING DEPT…
BUSH IS A HYPOCRITE Sierra Club.org 2002
It’s more than a little ironic that, in his private life, President Bush is actually a leader in consumer conservation. His Crawford, Texas, ranch has been described as an environmentally sensitive showplace designed with “state-of-the-art energy efficiency.” The house is filled with energy-saving devices, while the lawn and orchard are irrigated with recycled water.
Ofee.gov
America’s most famous residence now gets some of its energy directly from the sun. In late 2002, the White House installed its first-ever solar electric system, including putting 167 solar electric – a.k.a. “photovoltaic” – panels on the roof of the complex’s primary maintenance building, and two solar thermal systems to heat the pool and spa and provide domestic hot water. The photovoltaic system feeds electricity into the White House grounds’ distribution system, supplementing the complex’s power supply. The American-made solar panels were manufactured by Evergreen Solar, Inc. of Marlborough, MA.
Also ofee.gov
John Howard, the Federal Environmental Executive, noted: “Installing solar panels at the White House is yet another example of President Bush’s personal stewardship commitment. When he was governor, he made sure that the Governor’s Mansion in Austin was one of the first to sign up to receive renewable energy. At his ranch in Crawford, the Bush family has installed a 25,000-gallon rainwater cistern for irrigation and planted native plants — and he’s busy removing invasive trees. Their geothermal heating and cooling system sends water into the ground 300 feet to keep it at a constant 67 degrees, using 75 percent less electricity than traditional heating and air-conditioning systems – and so efficiently heating the outdoor pool that they shelved their plans to install solar panels. And his national energy plan includes more than $9 billion in tax proposals to increase energy efficiency, conservation, renewable energy, and emissions-free energy.”
Spin all you want, if it looks like a hippo-crite, walks like a hippo-crite and sounds like a hippo-crite it must be Algore! Carbon credits my butt, what a made up bunch of crap! Typical hollywood elite, do as I say not as I do.
I beat up a minority this morning, but it’s okay, because I just bought some racism offsets.
What is it with this offset stuff? It’s okay for Gore to use a lot of energy because
a) he’s trying to get the message out, and
b) he’s buying carbon offsets???
What about those people who can’t AFFORD to buy ‘carbon offsets’???
Back home in Tennessee, safely ensconced in his suburban Nashville home, Vice President Al Gore is no doubt basking in the Oscar awarded to "An Inconvenient Truth," the documentary he inspired and in which he starred. But a local free-market …
that is the whole beauty of it, Al Gore is attempting to offset his own carbon footprint as much as he possibly can, but do to his commitments he has to do more traveling than the average person. The point of buying offsets is that wealthy people can do it, and it is an investment in helping the environment and developing new technology that everyone can use to reduce their carbon emissions. His purchase of offsets isn’t a way to say that he can pollute more, and isn’t just something rich people can do to benefit themselves, it benefits all.
Lets just say you are right, and they are using it as a political tool. Who does it hurt? No one.
Now Bush and the Republicans who have lied consistently about the Iraq war and the ‘War on Terror’, and have used it for political gain, they get a pass from you. But, over 3,000 of our troops have died, over 800 contractors have died, at the very least 50,000 Iraqi civilians have died, and who knows how many have been displaced.
that is the whole beauty of it, Al Gore is attempting to offset his own carbon footprint as much as he possibly can, but do to his commitments he has to do more traveling than the average person.
I get it. I REALLY GET IT NOW! So a plantation owner should go around to otherplantations and tell them how wrong it is to own slaves. Of course, since he’s so busy trying to stamp out slavery, well then he’s going to need just a few slaves to run his plantation while he’s gone.
No matter what his ‘traveling committments’, he certainly doesn’t need to own as many homes as he does, nor as big as they are, if he’s really interested in global warming.
Hey, what about scaling down his lifestyle, and STILL buying carbon offsets. Wouldn’t that make him an even BETTER advocate for global warming?
Yes, it may be a valid story, but it is also a right wing hit job. I notice that the “Tennessee Center for Policy Research” apparently doesn’t consider global warming to be an important enough topic to have a policy on it, but they have time and resources to attack Gore. I continue to be disgusted with the character assassination which the Corporate Right practices as a means of diverting attention more important issues, like their own plundering and trashing of the planet. Good government policy could fairly mandate changes in llifestyle for everyone and reduce greenhouse effects far more than individual conservation. The hypocrisy is shared by all, left and right, but the right claims to be, and apparently is, ignorant or more likely in denial.

Remember the Internet? It allows us to communicate with people all the way on the other side of the planet.
There is this thing called TELECONFERENCING that is very effective as well. You take 2 (or more) computers connected through the “internets” combined with a “video/webcam” and it allows you to actually SEE the person on the other side of the world as you are talking to them.
There are more efficient and effective ways to do business. But just because someone is getting the message out, they do not have to live by the message.
By the way, carbon offsets do not prevent or remove pollution from the environment.
Lets just say you are right, and they are using it as a political tool. Who does it hurt? No one.
Well, if it costs more money for certain things because of an increased emphasis on ‘green’ initiatives… you know, like MAKING ENERGY, then there’ll be less money for social programs like health care and food stamps. More people going hungry and no health care for them.
But I’m impressed… a whole 20 posts went by before the war was mentioned. We can’t have a discussion without that subject now can we.

You’re amused at the prospect of domestic spying, and the loss of american liberty? If that were Hillary spying on you, how would you feel, stupid c*nt?
The slave owner example doesn’t work, its like comparing apples to oranges. If you are just using that example because Gore grew up in a well to do southern family, well then, you are not only smearing him but every southern republican politician, who hold a majority in that region.
The point Gore is making is that you do not have to make extreme sacrifice to help the environment, just take steps that reduce you emissions easily and cheaply. He is showing that not only can you reduce emissions, but you can still aspire to wealth and consumerism. And if you are going to make a comparison, compare his wealth and carbon emissions with other politicians. And if you are going to criticize his wealth, look at the wealth of other politicians. At least he is trying to make a difference with his. He could be just sitting at home, doing nothing productive in society. Instead, he is giving his time over to this endeavor.
Ah, the moronic trolls have returned. They claim Gore’s lifestyle is ripe for debate while claiming Bush has a laudable environmental record.
1. Bring on the debate.
2. Bush’s true record is pathetic.
To claim that conservatives somehow are more environmentally aware and active than liberals is laughable. Bring on the debate — you will lose this one too.

The timing of this couldn’t have been better, or more well planned. If Algore didn’t think He was going to get some push back He’s a bigger fool than I thought.
#33, no, it had nothing to do with souther families/politicians/etc.
I wasn’t criticizing his wealth, I have no idea how he got it, and unless he was ‘on the take’ (doubtful, at least to a large degree), then his wealth is immaterial.
The problem people have with Al Gore is that he’s preaching about making changes in your lifestyle, but while he’s making “some” changes, he’s relying on buying global offsets to dramatically reduce his carbon footprint. If he was really that concerned, then quit flying in private planes, quit driving SUV’s, and don’t spend so lavishly on energy.
Does anybody know what Al Gores carbon footprint IS????
#34, I, for one, have never made any claims re: Bush’s environmental record. This whole thing about Al Gore and carbon offsets doesn’t have anything to do with comparing his record to conservatives… it’s the apparent hypocrisy that he’s not practicing what he’s preaching.
Comment by AshenShard — February 27, 2007 @ 4:01 pm
Would you agree we are discussing individual action and not policy? If so, Gore is a little behind the curve on individual action and Bush is way behind on policy.
Bush is behind on policy only if you believe in global warming. (Privately, at least according to #11, he seems to be ahead of the curve).
Gore, not being in office, I guess you could say has no position on ‘policy’… though if I remember correctly from the 90’s, then he’d probably be considered ahead on policy. On individual action? I’d say behind, simply because of the hypocrisy… purchasing global offsets is no excuse for his excesses, assuming global warming is true.
Everyone on the earth has an environmental footprint. Al Gore is actively working to make his zero. Hard to do much better than zero. Plus, he’s actively working to push forward policies that would improve the environment for all people. Seems like he’s way in the black now. Any questions?
#27, I knew you were talking to #18, I just wanted to comment on your inane comment.

2. You weren’t responding to my comment, you were making your own inane comment about my handle.
3. Global warming is real. We need to start taking steps to combat it.
I don’t know about the rest here, but I’ve come to distrust much of what is said on the right. However, if it is true Gore should own up to it. If it is not, then I think Gore needs to do a little work and show what he has done in his life to help out, that would undercut any false reports on his own environmental impact. But would it be enough for the naysayers?
Comment by AshenShard — February 27, 2007 @ 4:19 pm
I suspect, for some naysayers at least, Gore’s energy use isn’t really the issue, ultimately they are just trying to undermine the scientific consensus on global warming.
Al Gore isn’t serious about global warming. He’s responsible for this country’s energy path. Hundreds of coal plants instead of nuclear power plants exist because of Al Gore. Those coal plants product CO2 emissions that cause global warming; they are also responsible for 200,000 lung cancer deaths annually.
Thanks Al. Enjoy that Oscar and being a “rock star.” Bastard.
Rubbernecking the death of that Smith woman had to give way to something new this week, so the mouthbreather demographic has hopped on the Gore-bashing bandwagon. Since Ellen hosted the Oscars, it’s a handy segue into gay-bashing too, which is always good news for that crowd. Whatever keeps’em watching SpecialK commercials and not thinking about piles of dead Iraqis, I spose…..
Don’t anyone doubt for even a second that the hippy gear at Crawford was all Laura’s doing, and that would constitute the ONE good thing she’s done. Dubbie’s still battin’ .000, on purpose. Furthermore, no amount of hippy gear on earth changes what Dubbie’s real, material contribution to the world has been. Voodoo rhetoric can’t change that.

Why do you people bother responding to these parrots? They contradict themselves. If global warming is a myth, and if being an environmentalist is bad politics, as they evidently believe, why are they criticizing Gore for using too much energy. They don’t care.
You say they’re pointing out hypocrisy? It doesn’t matter how much he spends if it’s green energy. And what is it they don’t get about carbon offsets? What would they say if he didn’t buy them?
These people are straining to make a point, and failing.
Is it ok for a company to destroy certain parts of the environment if they pay for offsetting credits like Gore does?

Only your dispassionate Canadian correspondent could write this without colour or favour, but is it possible that George Bush is a secret Green? Evidently his Crawford Winter White House has 25,000 gallons of rainwater storage, gray water collection from sinks and showers for irrigation, passive solar, geothermal heating and cooling. “By marketplace standards, the house is startlingly small,†says David Heymann, the architect of the 4,000-square-foot home. “Clients of similar ilk are building 16-to-20,000-square-foot houses.†Furthermore for thermal mass the walls are clad in “discards of a local stone called Leuders limestone, which is quarried in the area. The 12-to-18-inch-thick stone has a mix of colors on the top and bottom, with a cream- colored center that most people want. “They cut the top and bottom of it off because nobody really wants it,†Heymann says. “So we bought all this throwaway stone. It’s fabulous. It’s got great color and it is relatively inexpensive.â€

February 27th, 2007 at 4:17 pmI don’t know about the rest here, but I’ve come to distrust much of what is said on the right. However, if it is true Gore should own up to it. If it is not, then I think Gore needs to do a little work and show what he has done in his life to help out, that would undercut any false reports on his own environmental impact. But would it be enough for the naysayers?

Did it hurt you having to admit that?
Sorry, babe, had to do it.

I suspect, for some naysayers at least, Gore’s energy use isn’t really the issue, ultimately they are just trying to undermine the scientific consensus on global warming.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:24 pmGore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

Hey, I can admit GWB did one thing right — even if it was probably purely unintentional on his part. :P
February 27th, 2007 at 4:28 pmI agree, liberal hypocracy is not news.

No, that went to Bush Jr.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pmAl Gore isn’t serious about global warming.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pmRubbernecking the death of that Smith woman had to give way to something new this week, so the mouthbreather demographic has hopped on the Gore-bashing bandwagon.
“Hey, never mind Dubbie’s pile of dead people and pissed away $ – that damned Al Gore is threatening our very way of lightbulb!!”
awesome job on the hissy fit over Al though – really courageous stuff.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:35 pm#51… wow, without putting in ANYTHING for airline trips or vehicles, his carbon impact is ~92… for ONE HOME, and that’s INCLUDING Tipper in the calculation.
One question about the site where you can calculate your carbon footprint… why doesn’t it have any questions about how many trips you make/year in private jets?
February 27th, 2007 at 4:37 pmpolitico.com picked up on it too, and, embarrassingly, ONLY linked to the Drudge Report story…pitiful!!!
February 27th, 2007 at 4:37 pm#54, ah, another war reference… I’ve been missing them.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:38 pmApparently Fox removed their article.

Did Clinton start that war? No. But if you think he deserves blame for that, then you must agree that Bush deserves blame for Darfur.
February 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pmMan, there are some really energetic trolls out today. Must have been a snow day off of school for a bunch of cold-weather kiddies or something.
Too bad their “logic” doesn’t match their energy level. They’re hyperactive, sure, but man, do they bring some pathetic arguments to the table.

February 27th, 2007 at 11:10 pm#58/annefrank –
There never was any story, just a title. Drudge linked “Gore Responds…” to a FOX page with no content. Is this a gimmick they set up together for a good har-har?
I posted a screeenshot of the travesty here.
February 28th, 2007 at 8:48 amWhy do you people bother responding to these parrots? They contradict themselves. If global warming is a myth, and if being an environmentalist is bad politics, as they evidently believe, why are they criticizing Gore for using too much energy. They don’t care.
You say they’re pointing out hypocrisy? It doesn’t matter how much he spends if it’s green energy. And what is it they don’t get about carbon offsets? What would they say if he didn’t buy them?
These people are straining to make a point, and failing.
February 28th, 2007 at 4:25 pmBTW—-What kind of person chooses “Kurds Are A Gas” for a name?
Wow.
