Glenn Beck Claims Olbermann Is ‘Killing…The World’s Democracy,’ ‘Smacks Of…McCarthyism’

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann is profiled in this month’s issue of Rolling Stone. In the piece, Olbermann shares his thoughts on right-wing CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck:

A wolf in sheep’s clothing. The very dangerously bigoted guy who is selling himself as a pragmatic philosopher. I don’t think he sees his own bigotry. There’s something about him that suggests that, one night, he’ll say something that will cost him his career in television.

Glenn Beck responded tonight, calling Olbermann an “intolerant ideologue” whose ideas “smack of the same McCarthyism [Edward R.] Murrow fought so valiantly against.” Beck added, “Hey, Keith, you’re not saving the world’s democracy; you’re killing it, my friend, by trying to limit the marketplace of ideas to only those that reflect your own.”

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/02/beckolb.320.240.flv]

Beck said tonight that his numerous inflammatory comments aren’t due to his right-wing point of view, but are merely a sign that he is “not perfect” and “struggl[ing] to find the answers to the issues that we face — on my own.” Some lowlights from Beck’s “struggle”:

The anti-gay slur “faggot” is nothing more than “a naughty name.” [1/23/07]

“What happened to the Duke lacrosse team was practically a lynching without the rope. And for the first time in my life, Mr. Oreo Cookie without the chocolate on the outside can understand why people celebrated when O.J. Simpson was acquitted.” [1/15/07, using a racial slur for African-Americans that refers to "being black on the outside and white on the inside"]

“[W]hat I feel like saying is, ‘Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.’” [11/14/06, on what he would like to say to Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first elected Muslim member of Congress]

“I wonder if I’m alone in this — you know it took me about a year to start hating the 9-11 victims’ families? Took me about a year.” [9/9/05]

“And that’s all we’re hearing about, are the people in New Orleans. Those are the only ones we’re seeing on television are the scumbags.” [9/9/05]

BECK: Latest issue of “Rolling Stone” has hit the newsstands, and in it there is a profile — no, no, actually more of a canonization of Keith Olbermann. The thing that struck me when I was reading the article wasn`t the article itself or the self-importance in it, but a small sidebar in which he took a swing at three anchors on this network, Anderson Cooper, Nancy Grace, and yours truly.

Here`s what he had to say about me. “A wolf in sheep`s clothing. The very dangerously bigoted guy who is selling himself as a pragmatic philosopher. I don`t think he sees his own bigotry. There`s something about him that suggests that, one night, he`ll say something that will cost him his career in television.”

You know, let me be clear about something here. Keith Olbermann is right, at least on the last part. After 30 years in broadcasting, three hours of live radio content every day, plus one hour of TV a night, one comment could end my television career. It`s not a question of if, but of when.

Until the inevitable comes, I`ll continue to tell you what I believe. At the same time, I struggle to find the answers to the issues that we face on my own. We`ll talk about it. Yes, I am not perfect. If I were, I wouldn`t really bother to ask any questions.

I mean, I guess I could just stay out of trouble by asking clearly scripted questions to guests who won`t disagree, but that would kind of be planned and kind of a planned perfection that breeds arrogance that is far more dangerous than being a dope like me who says the wrong thing from time to time.

If I`m going to be shut down for that, well, it will likely be because of an intolerant ideologue like Keith Olbermann. The very idea smacks of the same McCarthyism Murrow fought so valiantly against.

Hey, Keith, you`re not saving the world`s democracy; you`re killing it, my friend, by trying to limit the marketplace of ideas to only those that reflect your own.

Me personally, I surround myself with varying points of view. My staff: blood shooting out of your eyes liberals, conservatives, men, women, minorities, and, you know, it`s weird, I don`t need a mailbox outside my office to communicate with them. Oops, did I say that?

When you make pronouncements as bold as, “The man who sees absolutes where all other men see nuances and shades of meaning is either a prophet or a quack,” you better be a prophet, man. You know, and frankly, Keith, nah, you`re not really a prophet. I`m just saying.

  1. Xenon says:

America is killing democracy, not those who point out its shortcomings.

  2. JPark says:

heh, Glenn Beck. That guy is bright.

  3. paland says:

Pot calling the kettle black. It’s the right wingers who smack of McCarthyism. I think he’s jsut projecting.

  4. Eargy Earp says:

Look nobody watches this loser. Just forget him.

  5. CC says:

They don’t call him beckerhead for nothing!

  6. JPark says:

#4 I don’t know that. Nobody should watch him because he is a little fraternity boy turned “comedian”. But I would like to see the stats.

  7. Jeff says:

“he’ll say something that will cost him his career” Glenn has certainly said some things he should have been fired for. But no, instead he has been promoted by our “left leaning” media. The irony is soooo thick it actually hurts. You are right paland, why is it that the GOP project their faults on people who shine a light on them and so many American buy it?

  8. Liberals Heart Terrorists says:

Olberman is a McCarthyist!!! AND so is ThinkProgress. You people would shut down the opposition if you could. I think it’s disgusting that you would attack Glenn Beck because he speaks the truth about Fascist Olbermann.

  9. JPark says:

#8 If I only had your intellectual capacity I could finally understand the popularity of NASCAR!!!

  10. Vance says:

Maybe Glenn is pissed at Victor Ashe being the third with Taggart instead of himself. Gay rage is not cute in the world of politics Glenn, dress up like a veitnamese 11 year old and Rush will have you by for cookies.

  11. What up says:

Does anyone remember when Keith Olbermann was cool when he did SportsCenter with Craig Kilborn? Now, everytime I flip on his show, he is having an anuerysm about something the Republicans did. His ranting is so irritating. I can take about 5 minutes of it before my head explodes.

  12. Crazy Eddie says:

“intolerant ideologue” whose ideas “smack of the same McCarthyism [Edward R.] Murrow fought so valiantly against.” Beck added, “Hey, Keith, you’re not saving the world’s democracy; you’re killing it, my friend, by trying to limit the marketplace of ideas to only those that reflect your own.”

This statement is ludicrous. First he says ideologists are intolerant then goes on to say that ideology is a free market.

    WTH?

If I am have a good idea and Beck doesn’t agree with it, I am intolerant. Why of course to Beck it is because he is an authoritarian.

Do not think as I think, do as I think you should do.

    A9 your thinking Mr. Beck.

  13. The Liberal Avenger says:

    Rolling Stone is a WEEKLY.

  14. JPark says:

#11 Then flip the channel or are you too stupid to use the remote. Not saying your head exploding is a bad thing…

  15. Raymond Funamoto says:

Beck IS THE McCarthyite, NOT Keith Olbermann! Beck should FOLLOW THE LEAD of his BEER NAMESAKE and PUT A LID ON IT, or AT LEAST A CAP before HIS F*CKING HEAD IS BLOWN OFF!!!! NOT THAT I or ANYONE WITH AN OUNCE OF BRAINS OR COMMON SENSE WOULD SHED A TEAR FOR THIS STUPID JERK-OFF Beck ANYWAY!!!!!

ahem.. i coined that phrase. :)

    i should trademark it. lol

  17. Cory says:

Does any one care what this man says except for the radical right?

  18. JPark says:

#15 Be fair Ray. The right wingers are not exactly gifted. They HAVE to listen to someone with a similar intellect. It isn’t like these schmucks are Stephen Hawking…or even Steve-O.

  19. Jay Randal says:

Everybody must contact CNN to fire Glenn Beck. His fascist views do not represent average Americans, so therefore his words are utter nonsense.

  20. Nads says:

Intolerance for glenn beck’s racism is no vice.

  21. rachel rj kinnardi says:

Glenn Beck is a CIA Operative with a specialty in propaganda.

    Truth.

    Just look at him.

    CIA all right.

  22. r€nato says:

I’m so confused. I thought right-wingers considered McCarthyism to be a good thing.

  23. JPark says:

#21 Only when it is a right winger doing it Renato. Consistency is not a virtue among the righties.

  24. What up says:

ZING!!!! Jpark, you just put me in my place. Keith used to be a funny guy that people liked. Now he is an angry malcontent that bitches about everything.

I would venture to say that you are the type of guy that gets all his news from liberal blogs and liberal opinion shows. You also think that because you are liberal, you are extremely intelligent. You have obviously been put on this Earth to save us all.

Conservatives are the devil, right? If it makes you comfortable to call me stupid, that’s great. I’m sure you are very successful at serving coffee at Starbucks or whatever menial, liberal job you have.

  25. Crazy Eddie says:

President George W. Bush has sent Victor Ashe, the US Ambassador to Poland and a “special” friend since their cheerleader and cohabitation days at Yale …

Oh how special and cute. Hey Vance, bet your jealous, eh?

  26. rachel rj kinnardi says:

    Comment by What up

Yet the poor liberals own the media and hollywood. You seem to have your myths confused. Which is it? Are they poor limbaugh drug users or are they wealthy media giants? Are they bankers or are they broke?

  28. What up says:

Oh, and by the way, to every other liberal posting on this site: What qualifies any of you to insult conservatives intelligence (not that I think Beck is a genius. I really don’t care for the guy)? Do any of you have any graduate degrees or doctorates in anything? Do you read anything else besides liberal blogs or liberal publications? Can you have a real debate with someone without calling them names or insulting their intelligence? Have you ever read articles dissenting with your opinions to get the full story? Or does it make you feel comfortable to pass judgment from your thrones? So sorry to offend you, your majesties.

  29. David O. says:

Hey ‘What Up’- why don’t you watch TEN MINUTES of Olbermann and see if your head _does_ ‘blow up.

And hey- ‘LIBURLS (heart) Tayurriss’s’- keep on posting and you’ll PROVE that you slept thru 6th grade civics class.

  30. Crazy Eddie says:

    Conservatives are the devil, right?

You can’t even get your own opinions straight.
Who said the conservatives are the debbil? Falwell?

They are, to me, authoritarian materialists, quite the opposite of what Jesus taught. Thus they are hypocrites.

  31. Jay Randal says:

In Orwell’s 1984 book, words are twisted into opposite meanings, like up is down and down is up, right becomes left and left becomes right, etc. So Beck is using Orwellian double-speak to twist Olberman into a new McCarthy, when actually Beck himself is into McCarthyism. Progressives are NOT fascists, but far-right GOPers are fascists.

  32. citizen Able says:

I never watch his trash but I was flipping through the channels tonight and I was amazed to see that Glenn Beck had Bernie Kerik on. Bernie Kerik! I had to stop and watch for a bit.

They went on and on about what a terrible threat Iran is to the US, talking like they’re mideast experts instead of shameless corporate shills.

It was such an over-the-top display of reckless war-mongering, I pictured Randolph Hearst’s mummified countenance blushing in his casket.

to be more intelligent then glenn beck is not that hard a test.

and yes, im smarter then glenn beck, ive challenged him to a debate, but hes too much of a coward to debate me, probably because he knows ill destroy him verbally.

Oh, and by the way, to every other liberal posting on this site: What qualifies any of you to insult conservatives intelligence?

    Stuff like this;

Conservatives are the devil, right? -whatup

Also when a Conservative writes books about Godless ‘liberals (which I am not) that is an insult. As if God plays politics. As if Jesus knew what a Republican was. Such books are highly unintelligent.

  37. Jenny G. says:

    He’s just jealous.

  38. Mr. Todd says:

Glenn Beck is a moron in moron’s clothing.

  39. What up says:

Crazy Eddie, so authoritarian materialists are all conservatives? What about all the liberals in Hollywood? What about all the CEO’s that support liberal causes? What about all the union leaders? I guess these people don’t have a material nature. Well, I’m sure you have taken a vow of poverty. Your material nature obviously helped you purchase a computer for the box you live in (since you aren’t material, right?) Like I said, none of you can have a true debate without calling me a name or demeaning my beliefs.

  40. ronjazz says:

Hey, what up, your nym says it all about your “intelligence”. You’re an idiot and a fool, and I or any other liberal would destroy you in a debate on whatever subject you chose, using facts instead of noise. Graduate degrees and doctorates are easily bought (look at the idiot in the White House); intelligence is something else again, and it requires imagination and curiousity, both of which are non-existent on the right. As you have so fully proven this evening.

  41. katy says:

… i’ve always wondered about this:
to every other NEOCON posting on this site: What qualifies any of you to insult PROGRESSIVE’s intelligence? Do any of you have any graduate degrees or doctorates in anything? Do you read anything else besides NEOCON blogs or NEOCON publications? Can you have a real debate with someone without calling them names or insulting their intelligence? Have you ever read articles dissenting with your opinions to get the full story? Or does it make you feel comfortable to pass judgment ON OTHERS?…

    …actually, no, i really don’t wonder… it’s obvious…
    .

  42. Crazy Eddie says:

Crazy Eddie, so authoritarian materialists are all conservatives?

No, thats not what I wrote.

I said to me they are, what others think is their opinion and just because I think it does not make it so.

If you think all liberals work at menial jobs, it does not make it so.
    Capice?

  43. Sharon says:

Beck’s a bigot, right winged nut bag and yes I did force myself to watch his show…Miserable…Funny how he make’s statement’s slamming Keith and accusing him of the very thing he is guilty of…..No suprise here though…Heard today MSNBC’s ratings are up 58% and was attributed to the Olberman show popularety…..Heard that on CNN, isnt that funny…

One last shot over the bow for all the new trollie poster and of course the old hang on kid’s..Nascar racer’s alway’s turn to the left after the streight away..Just a little fact for ya all…Blessings all…..Peace

  44. What up says:

Katy, who said I was a Neocon? I really don’t care for the job that the Bush administration has done. They haven’t addressed any issues that are truly important to this country: social security reform, welfare reform, clean energy, etc. Like I said, I’m sure it makes you all comfortable to espouse what I believe. I don’t base my opinions on the rigid lines on political parties or agendas. This country’s problems won’t be solved by people like you. None of you have really seen past the idea that I have a generally conservative stance. What you fail to realize is that we all really need the same things (some of the issues I mentioned above). Try being open-minded for a minute. It feels good. Trust me…

  47. owlbear1 says:

So Beck is saying he represents for the “Terrified little bigot” American deomographic.

He has a point tho, long as he doesn’t call for anybodies death. Just as Olbermann to is free to MOCK Beck for his ignorance.

Beck wanna look stupid, Beck getta look stupid.

  48. What up says:

Oh, and Katy, I was just wondering what made you so intelligent and qualified to pass judgment on the rest of us. It was an honest question. You are all insulting my intelligence because I challenged your beliefs. I am entitled to defend myself. I mean, it seems like you guys have all the answers. You all must be a bunch of doctors or something. I think I am way out of my league. I only have a Masters. Poor, stupid me.

  49. Crazy Eddie says:

What about all the liberals in Hollywood? -WU

Why do you confuse their profession with political ideology?

What about all the union leaders?
I was a Teamster for 5 years. Unions have outlived, I think, their usefullness and are in bed with the company.

Well, I’m sure you have taken a vow of poverty.
I chose to work on aircraft for a living, it’s not the best paying job in the world but it’s interesting. If I were material, as you accuse me of, then I would have been a lobbyist or a stockbroker, or a thief.

    There is something wrong here!
Beck trounces his opponent, but when he mentions 3 things he holds up 4 fingers.
He denounces the left of failing democracy but fails to metion the right trashing the left as a failure of democracy.
Is this the future of the US? Left vs Right and no middle ground?
This isn’t democracy, this is verbal civil war.
No good will come of this but more hatred of each other.
The mind and a parachute are the same.

  53. Sharon says:

What up, I havent called you names and don’t want to debate you either..Don’t care what you ideas are..If you have something interesting to say or a link to something of importance then post it other wise it seems all you want to do is pick a fight and demand attention….I’m to busy to play with you and refuse to baby sit…..Blessings and be gone..

  54. What up says:

Crazy Eddie, I agree that you didn’t call me names (unlike others on this site). But you did pigeonhole me with conservatives that hate people based on political beliefs. I don’t think liberals are godless at all. In fact, if you don’t believe in God, good for you. That’s your opinion.

I have friends will all different kinds of beliefs. I have friends that are very liberal and we have great debates together. But at the end of the day, we are still friends. I can disagree with someone without calling them stupid.

Like I said, we all have the same basic goals. For instance, we all want to help the poor. On one hand, many liberals prefer government intervention as a means to help the less fortunate. On the other hand, many conservatives prefer some government intervention, but also believe in charities and people helping themselves. We’re not all a bunch of heartless pricks as some of you may believe. Many of you would benefit from talking with a conservative one-on-one. We’re good people too…

  55. More Cow Bell says:

I thought the record clearly showed Glenn Beck to be a bigot (reference him on mediamatters) and his continued existence on the air shows the levels which CNN like all the other networks have sunk. He might make a nice firecracker for AM radio in some backwater redneck town, but he shouldn’t be on a NEWS NETWORK.

And the guy comes off as a pompus azzhole, the kind of guy who would bump into you in a bar and end up getting his head cracked open trying to fight you.

  56. Charlie C says:

SHORT AND TO THE POINT!” GLENN BECK IS A “F**K WAD…AND BIGOT”

Michael, err, whatup, what is, to you, wisdom? Can you find it in a book?

I was willing to ignore it the first 2 times you asked, but since you seem insecure enough to keep harping on this subject, I’ll indulge you. Just remember that you started the pissing contest, and it truly gives me no pleasure to castrate you.

I’m a doctor (MD), and I’m probably smarter than you. I’ve also done some bench research in statistical genetics, but am not a scientist, and do not have a PhD. Happy?

I can’t speak for the others, though, or their degrees.

  59. What up says:

Eddie, I wasn’t jugding you. I was making a point that everyone here wants to do well for themselves. We all have a material nature. It was just a sarcastic comment to illustrate my point.

Just because my chosen profession is in the business world does not make me materialistic. (Not that I even mentioned my career path before, but I get the impression that a lot of liberals think business is all about greed. I also make the assumption that liberal associate business with conservatives.) However, it’s what I’m good at. I’ve always been great with numbers. I love to work with numbers. I’ve also been a manager. Not because I am materialistic or power hungry, but because I enjoy leading people. I like setting strategic visions and achieving goals (probably like most of you). However, I perform volunteer work to give back to my community as well. I believe in the greater good, just like the rest of you.

Eddie, you sound like a hard working guy. I wasn’t saying anything about these groups beliefs. I am just saying that liberals can have a materialistic nature too. My examples may be extreme, but they illustrate my point.

By the way, unions have done a lot of good for this country. I tend to agree with you though. Some union leaders put their good over the good of their members.

  60. AkaDad says:

If my memory serves me Glenn Beck, on his radio show, fantasized about killing Michael Moore.

  61. Crazy Eddie says:

    Didn’t say you didn’t.

Many of you would benefit from talking with a conservative one-on-one. We’re good people too -whatup
    Didn’t say you weren’t.

Spending trillions on a democratic experiment is basically welfare for non Americans. Why is it that it’s okay to waste so much for a country alot of, but not nearly all, conservatives hate but not okay to use that money to build a better America?

I talk to conservatives all the time.

  62. What up says:

Eddie, wisdom is experiencing life. Wisdom can come from education, but it can also come from something as simple as raising a family. My point with that comment was to highlight the fact that some poeple that post on this site think I am stupid because I have some conservative beliefs. I was just wondering what made them so smart. I was defending myself by alluding to the fact that I am an educated guy, so I must have a brain cell or two. I don’t care if anyone here has a doctorate or just a high school degree. I just take offense to the fact that some people, who know nothing about me, make wild assumptions about my intelligence and beliefs.

Also, I can’t believe this started with me talking about when Keith was cool. What a tangent…

  63. BillyDelyon says:

Glenn Beck, that cat’s bout as sharp as a marble…

  64. Crazy Eddie says:

(Not that I even mentioned my career path before, but I get the impression that a lot of liberals think business is all about greed. I also make the assumption that liberal associate business with conservatives.)

Business is about the bottom line. Today we have more extreme poverty than we have had in thirty years while an Exxon exec gets 400 million as a bonus. Athletes, playing a game, make millions a year.

Disparity is high, and I fear that disparity will be the fall of our country. Disparity drives people to sell drugs, or steal. Disparity, I think, is the silver bullet into the heart of what makes America great, it’s people.

    Live and let live.

  65. Crazy Eddie says:

    Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood.

    Where are you?

  66. What up says:

Whoa, Nads. Chill out buddy. I’m sure you are a great scientist. My question was sarcastic and rhetorical. I’m sure you are more well versed in science than I am. However (I will make an assumption here), I would venture to say that you couldn’t sell something to save your life. I would also venture to say that I have a better grasp of economic markets than someone in your profession. These are just examples, but my point is that knowledge is all relative. I’m sure I there are areas that you excel in, just as there are areas that I excel in.

  67. Captain America says:

But unless you’re defending glenn beck’s racist statements, the name-calling really shouldn’t affect you.

The over-simplification that conservatives are stupid, presumably based on posts #14 and #18, are aimed directly at those defending beck’s attacks against olbermann … attacks which are obvious projections of beck’s own authoritarianism and racism.

… of course, if you ARE defending beck’s racism, then we’re about to have a very different conversation. you essentially cede any right to “civlity” when defending things like racism, torture, human rights … glenn beck, of course, has forfeited the right to not be called out for his atrocious words, and I have little patience for those who defend trash like him.

  69. Crazy Eddie says:

I just take offense to the fact that some people, who know nothing about me, make wild assumptions about my intelligence and beliefs.

It’s a sympton of todays divisive media and internet anonymous speak. I see it in both sides and in many books.

I refuse to consider myself a democrat or a conservative. Political ideology has become, somehow, associated with lifestyles.

I hate the TV. Really. I want to take it outside and beat it with a hammer.

  70. What up says:

Eddie, I am agreeing with you. However, I have my limits as well. I wouldn’t work for an oil company because I don’t believe in their business. But for the record, Exxon has a profit margin around 10%. In business, that is pretty low. They have to make a profit. I mean, should they operate at a loss? If they did, a lot of people (executives and rank-and-file workers alike) would lose their jobs. Also, for the record, if we didn’t have businesses, people in this country could not enjoy the lives they have today. Sure, the ultimate goal of business is profit. But when you are employed, isn’t your goal profit?

  71. Nads says:

I would venture to say that you couldn’t sell something to save your life.

Also, (I’m not trying to be a dick here) but where do you think a lot of charities get large donations from? If you analyze many businesses’ Balance Sheets, you will find that they make significant contributions to the community. The company that used to employ me had a variety of programs designed to encourage volunteerism among employees. In fact, I participated in a Habitat for Humanity and a Big Brothers program through me company. I’m not trying to blow my own horn here. I’m just saying that many responsible businesses give more money and time to the community than all of us combined (me included).

Ok, Eddie, but you don’t work for free right? You do draw a paycheck to support yourself, right? Because if you work for free, I could use a guy like you.

If your point is that some executives get exorbitant salaries, I agree. However, there are a whole host of people that approve of that transaction (probably including yourself). Have you ever held a share of stock? If so, then you have the voting rights to replace management if you believe they are not serving your interests. Everyone from the wealthiest investor to the little grannies that own stock hold these rights. A corporation is a democracy. If you don’t like what management is doing, then you can vote for a different Board of Directors with different goals and different management choices.

Also, I never said you were a spreadsheet. That sounded really funny when you said that though. Did you ever consider the fact that some people enjoy their jobs and don’t consider themselves to be “a battery to be used and then discarded”? It sounds like you don’t enjoy your work. Not for a commodities company – it’s obscenely high. We all know that’s after they’ve hidden the profits through giveaways to management, and other bookkeeping magic to hide their profits and gouging. Yet they still had the largest profits of any business, being a commodities business that just sucks crap from the ground.

You people really don’t know anything about ‘business’ or ‘economics’ for being so monetarily obsessed do you?

ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus, calm down son! You are one angry guy. Who pissed in your Wheaties today? And for that matter, who said I was right wing?

Is it your idea that all businesses should operate at a loss? Don’t challenge me on something that you know nothing about. Do you want to challenge me on voting rights? Let’s see if you knew this one, smart guy: All Common Stock carry one vote with each share. However, there are shares without voting rights, and those shares are called Preferred Shares. However, Preferred shares come with other perks not associated with Common Shares. For instance, if a company is liquidated, the owners of Preferred shares have first right to any money left over after all owners of debt have been paid. Common shares get whatever is left over. Futhermore, Preferred shares also get special dividends that Common shares may not realize.

So please don’t wax estatic on some shit you obviously know nothing about. What do you do for a living anyway? Are you Mother Teresa or something?

Bill Maher: George of the Bungle

Mocking President Bush for general ineptitude, comedian Bill Maher delivered a funny rant as part of his “New Rules” segment on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher”:

“Seriously, Mr. President, this job can’t be fun for you anymore. There’s no more money to spend; you used up all of that. You can’t start another war because you also used up the army. And now, darn the luck, the rest of your term has become the Bush family nightmare: helping poor people.”

“New rule: American must recall the president. That’s what this country needs – a good old-fashioned, California-style recall election, complete with Gary Coleman, porno actresses, and action film stars. And just like Schwarzenegger’s predecessor here in California, George Bush is now so unpopular, he must now defend his job against…Russell Crowe, because at this point I want a leader who will throw a phone at somebody. In fact, let’s have only phone throwers. Naomi Campbell can be the vice president.

“Now I kid, but seriously, Mr. President, this job can’t be fun for you anymore. There’s no more money to spend; you used up all of that. You can’t start another war because you also used up the army. And now, darn the luck, the rest of your term has become the Bush family nightmare: helping poor people. Yeah, listen to your mom, the cupboard’s bare, the credit card’s maxed out, and no one’s speaking to you. Mission accomplished.

“Now it’s time to do what you’ve always done best: lose interest and walk away. Like you did with your military service. And the oil company. And the baseball team. It’s time to move on and try the next fantasy job. How about cowboy or spaceman? Now, I know what you’re saying, you’re saying that there are so many other things that you as president could involve yourself in. Please don’t. I know, there a lot left to do. There’s a war with Venezuela, and eliminating the sales tax of yachts, turning the space program over to the church and Social Security to Fannie Mae, giving embryos the vote.

“But sir, none of that is going to happen now. Why? Because you govern like Billy Joel drives. You’ve performed so poor, I’m surprised you haven’t given yourself a medal. You’re a catastrophe that walks like a man. Herbert Hoover was a shitty president, but even he never conceded an entire metropolis to rising water and snakes. On your watch, we’ve lost almost all of our allies, the surplus, four airliners, two trade centers, a piece of the Pentagon, and the city of New Orleans. Maybe you’re just not lucky. I’m not saying you don’t love this country, I’m just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side. So yes, God does speak to you, and what he’s saying is, ‘Take a hint.’”

“In psychology, psychological projection is a defense mechanism in which one attributes to others, one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions.”

  143. USA says:

    140. I have experienced this too. It’s because conservatives are psychopaths and afraid of the truth and being put in their place by people much more intellegent than them. They are horrified.

  144. USA says:

    Comment by What Up:

“Oh, and by the way, to every other liberal posting on this site: What qualifies any of you to insult conservatives intelligence (not that I think Beck is a genius. I really don’t care for the guy)? Do any of you have any graduate degrees or doctorates in anything?”

Bush graduated from Harvard, and he’s a psychopath and nearly a retard…he is one of the dumbest people in the world–if you can’t see that, then you can’t see the most obvious, nor a hand in front of your face.

I don’t give a hoot about degrees, from Bush and many people I have met who graduate from Ivy league schools show me that degrees or going to an expensive college means nothing. It has no correlation with intellegence, at all.

  145. USA says:

“Look nobody watches this loser. Just forget him.”
    Comment by Eargy Earp

–Dear God I wish that were true. He’s insanely popular, and on such a mainstream network as CNN, this should really bother us all.

I think (and no this isn’t accurate, but I bet I’m not far off) for every 1 of Keith Olbermann, there are 5 Glenn Becks.

    ~Dani

  149. dolgoruky says:

I like to watch Olbermann because it puts down the right. What a great thing, especially after the unopposed sallying forth of all those people on Fox. But why are you all so upset? The thing about Olbermann is that it is obviously entertainment. Okay, the “Comments” are a bit extreme, but at least they’re listed as “Comments.”

  150. Diane says:

Why do we have to know what Glenn Beck feels?
He is not a journalist, he does not present a balanced point of view. He presents guests that agree with him or further a story he wants or thinks people ought to know.
Where is the democracy in that?

  151. Bluedog49 says:

What up: “What qualifies any of you to insult conservatives intelligence”

At this point, where does one start? You all felt it was right and proper to impeach a president because of a personal sexual affair. You all feel that a guy who wears cowboy boots and cowboy hats but is afraid of horses is more “authentic” than any of his adversaries. You all seem to have no problem with the evisceration of our constitution and the kinds of secrecy and corruption that would have sent you through the roof during Clinton’s adminsitration. You all were very excited by the incineration of a bunch of women and children during your wonderful “shock and awe” period. You call people who criticize his policies “traitors.” I could go on, but you get the idea…

  152. Crystal Glass says:

I think Keith Olbermann is jealous of those who are more successful. He should be happy he is Rolling Stones little darling. He attacked Glenn Beck, Nancy Grace and even our beloved Anderson Cooper. I turn to Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck to hear the truth. They are men inspired by God and decent traditional American values.

Glenn Beck represents the common man and it is a shame the liberals want him to disappear because they do not like what he says. This is McCarthism, Nazism and fascism. Liberals are hypocrites, they are for their own free speech and anyone else must be smeared and censored. I am glad Glenn Beck is looking out for me and my family. He is a real hero and a good looking man standing up against the Muslim and Spanish fascists that want to change the moral fabric of our clean decent country. He should be applauded for questioning the Muslim congressman Keith Ellison who tried to hide his ties to Islam in order to win an election. Now that is a wolf in sheep’s clothing

  153. Ellid says:

What Up – try a bachelor’s from a Seven Sisters college and a master’s from a leading seminary, plus publication in a forthcoming collection of conference papers on medieval textiles. Just became I vote Democratic doesn’t mean I’m stupid, ignorant, or unable to read anything but liberal blogs.

As for Glenn Beck, he’s an intolerant yahoo. The comments to Keith Ellison alone should have gotten him fired, and I’m stunned that any one pays attention to someone with the seeming intelligence, wit, and courtesy of a baboon in rut.

“Detachment,” you need detachment to stay in the same party with our current president and his president in charge of Vice! Wacthing those two (like Beck) shill for the global conglomerates that bought them into office must be hard for you to stomach.

Since I have decided to stay in a party that tolerates Biden, Lieberman and the other “NeoCon lites,” I feel your pain! {:-)

However, I disagree with you about KO. Keith seems to get his facts straight, and he doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Also, his stuff is truly funny!

Beck, in a face-to-face discussion with KO, on the so-called “facts” Beck spews out, would fold like a cheap BillO’ suit (or Limbaugh on drugs).

O’Reilly, Limbaugh, and Beck are simply not KO’s intellectual rivals. They are clearly spouting stuff that keeps them in good with the above-mentioned global conglomerates.

KO getting his contract renewed means he must be making tons of money for the GE oligarchy. It is nice to see that bunch of crocodiles working against their long-term interest. By allowing me to watch someone who encourages me, since I have no interest in promoting the long-term interest of either GE or MacroHard, it gives me hope that one day global conglomerates will be invited out of our political process. So, I’m glad KO did get a four-year contract.

Keith adds fun and enjoyment to the mainstream wasteland. And, when he gets serious, he is as serious as a NeoCon heart attack!

    What have you been smoking?

  156. squarepeg says:

Don’t fall for it. All this is, is an attempt by Glen Beck to get Keith Olbermann to put him on his Worst Person in the World list and start a feud with him to increase his popularity.
Now something must be going on over at CNN that you and I are not privvy to. Could this be a way or old Glennie to pick up ratings by trying to start a fight with Keith.
KETIH DON’T TAKE THE BAIT. LET HIM DROWN IN HIS OWN SELF-MADE CESSPOOL OF BIGOTRY, HATE AND STUPIDITY!

  157. Jon Swift says:

Glenn Beck has struggled very hard to be friends with black people.

  158. sam says:

Glenn Beck HATES America and its freedoms.

    That is the essential difference.

    GOP & supporters=AMERICA’S ENEMIES!!

    THIS IS AN INCONTROVERTIBLE FACT.

  160. Vanessa Somerville, Marine, IL says:

I watched a bit of Glenn Beck bonding with Danny Bonaduce and gee, two losers commiserating with each other! Olbermann is a genius compared to Beck. The guy is informed, opininated, and funny as hell. John Dean always seems amused by Olbermann’s questions because Olbermann asks questions that are spot on.

  161. hterrya says:

I guess what I like best about KO is that he doesn’t follow the Chris Matthews ruse of acting like he is being “fair” by putting on someone who agrees with his position and someone who disagrees with his position and then proceed to gang up and beat up on the one who disagrees.

That kind of “fairness” (a trademark of Faux News) I can do without. Thank you Keith!

  162. Will says:

Beck says: “I could just stay out of trouble by asking clearly scripted questions to guests who won`t disagree”

Before Keith Ellison was elected during his campaign to election he never said as a campaign promise he was going to swear on Quoran or directly emphasized his Muslim background. He dodged his background until he got elected. Let us see if he can get re-elected.

  165. scott says:

I sure get tired of rightwingers crying “censorship.” Beck says that since Olbermann predicts Beck will say something stupid that will cost him his job, Olbermann is trying to limit the marketplace of ideas. If Glenn beck uses the “n” word and and gets kicked off his network, it’s not Olbermann’s fault. As for the marketplace of ideas, it’s Republicans at the FCC and their apologists who are trying to allow greater merged corporate control of the media, not Olbermann or his audience. The main marketplace of ideas (mass media) is controlled by a handful of corporations like Viacom whose president endorsed president Bush for the 2004 elections and Clear Channel, which orchestrated the blackout of the Dixie Chicks for criticizing the president. I thought blacklisting artists and actors was one of the hallmarks of McCarthyism.

Of course you and the so-called Christian Right (who aren’t Christians at all) want a religious test, because the provisions of the Constitution, like Congress having the responsibility for declaring War, aren’t of particular interest to you.

  168. Carl Gordon says:

It’s certainly curious to read the various responses from alleged conservatives, keepers of the faith, and Kool Aid drinkers, as they try in vain to defend that which is irrational. Can’t speak for DICK, but it would appear that ole Georgie suffers from a life long terminal case of mauvaise foi (bad faith). And I’m not talking about that popular cult of the dead that he likes to flap his pie hole about when he’s looking for votes or money. Focusing exclusively on what he might become (the hero) in his dad’s eyes is a handy though self-deceptive way of overlooking the truth about what he is (enter choice insult here). Like a ham actor who extravagantly “played at” performing his role, he illustrates the all too common human inclination to embrace an externally determined ideal, an artificial expectation about what he ought to be. But of course, the cost of this sick play-acting is losing what he uniquely was, even before he made the disastrous decision to be a cheerleader.

The ability to accept ourselves for what we are—without exaggeration—is the key, since the chief value of human life is fidelity to our selves, sincerity in the most profound sense, and lets face it – it’s a bitch to pull off. In our relationships with other human beings, what we truly are is all that counts, yet it is precisely here that we most often betray ourselves by trying to be whatever the other person expects us to be, which, if the other person is DICK or some other conservative pinhead, the results are devastating, seeing that in this country, mouth-breathers are given the vote as well. This is odious since it exhibits a total lack of faith in ourselves: to the extent that your typical mouth-breather has total blind faith in Bush or DICK, it reveals their lack of the courage to be themselves. There are, in the end, only two choices—sincerity or self-deception, to be or not to be.

The need to be right is the sign of a vulgar mind.
    - Albert Camus

Sorry to burst your simpleton half-wit bubble, there is no truth in what they say, only fear, ignorance, hate and bigotry, and the men your talking about are the right hand of Satan, not God, you twit. It has nothing to do with values, unless you part of the masses who think “values” equals bigotry.

Oh you think I’m wrong? Lemme spell it out for you intolerance & paranoia of homosexuality, that a “value” to you. The desire to control millions of woman when it comes to their bodies, that’s a “value” right, scum? Your just another psychopath.

  172. Bluestocking says:

Olbermoonbat has become quite the howler over on Jeff Goldstein’s site and at Redstate. What you guys see in Keith is beyond my ken, but I think I get it: anger as authenticity. KO’s schtick is to act as partisan hitman while pretending to be disinterested observer.

Too bad he’s not really a news man.

Beating up on Glenn Beck is just his style. Olbermann’s a bully; you can tell by his show: he doesn’t invite anyone on who can take him down.

  175. Kergillian says:

“Until the inevitable comes, I`ll continue to tell you what I believe.”
