Bill to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ coming tomorrow.

Tomorrow afternoon, Rep. Marty Meehan (D-MA) will re-introduce The Military Readiness Enhancement Act, his bill to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and allow gays to serve openly. Today, Freedom to Serve highlighted the story of Serena, an African-American lesbian currently serving in the military. An excerpt from Serena:

Sometimes the constant looking around, whispering, speaking in code, and backpedaling to correct a slip of the tongue wears out my psyche. But it’s what I have to do to continue a career that I love very much and maintain a relationship with the girlfriend who I love very much. I appreciate her unyielding support, her understanding, and her acceptance of having to constantly use discretion when we interact with each other. One day it won’t be that way anymore and we can live our lives freely and openly.

More than 11,000 servicemembers have been dismissed under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

  9. Cory says:

Any one catch Dem. Rep. Gary Ackerman of NY question Condi Rice on “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”? Fuckin hilarious! When he asked about the fact that the military has fired foreign language specialists and has created deficists, Ackerman said it seems the military is more afraid of homosexuals then they are of terrorists, and if the enemies ever got a hold of this information they would have a platoon of lesbians chase them out of Baghdad. LMAO It was COMIC GENIUS and point on. You can hear the laughter and see the people behind him hide their faces. It seems that conservative Republicans are more concerned with sexuality than they are with foreign intelligence and safety.

here’s the link to it on youtube:

I think this is good news. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was always a cowardly attempt at compromise. When it comes to fighting blatant discrimination, there should not be that kind of compromise. There is absolutely no legitimate reason why openly gay people should not be allowed to serve this country in the military.

  11. Cory says:

Did anyone catch Rep. Ackerman question Condi Rice a few weeks ago in regards to the military’s foreign language deficit due to the defense departments “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy and firing gay servicemen? Ackerman said said:

“It seems the military has gone around and fired a whole bunch of people who speak foreign languages – Farsi, Arabic, etc. – after they trained them in their foreign language school for 63 weeks… and were fired. For some reason the military seems more afraid of gay people then they are of terrorists because they are very brave with the terrorists. If the terrorists ever get ahold of this information they’d get a platoon of lesbians to chase us out of Baghad”.

    Perfect.

I love how the US is in a war they are losing and are more concerned with firing homosexuals for coming out and having a deficit in forgeign language experts than they are with terrorism. The laughter from the crowd was spectacular.

  12. JPark says:

Well, you know how serious the righties are about getting those terrists. But not if it means using gays. That would just be…wrong.

  13. Liberals Heart Terrorists says:

Great news! This will expose Democrats as the radical leftists that they are!!! Thank you Meehan. Next up – force a vote on gay marriage!

Douchebag. You’re a Christian through and through I can see that.

How about you sit on this and spin——> ÃŽ

  17. Jay Randal says:

US military is having difficulty getting young Americans to join up, because of Bush’s Iraq Fiasco War, so the Pentagon hopes Gays will flock to join now, but most will wait till Iraq quagmire is ended and Bush is gone from the presidency.

    Cory,

I enjoy your posts greatly. Keep up the good work that you do.

    Thanks for the link! Fabulous!

    Thanks again.

  19. leftcoast says:

It’s absolutely incredible and disappointing that a ” modern western civilization” must still today need to inact a law to make sexual orientation a non-prerequsite to serve our country. America is so out of touch with planet earth.
    #13 JPark, on #11, I agree.

  20. AshenShard says:

    #11 LHT

Yes, because we know going against discrimination and fighting for equality definitely goes against American ideals.

    /sarcasm

  21. Democrat Soldier says:

It’s ABOUT thime this stupid rule was removed!

Interesting that other gay’s want to server our country by joining the military, while many of the trolls at TP have yet to serve their country.

I guess that means that some gay’s are just that much more patriotic than the average troll!

  22. emerald says:

Long overdue. The damage of DADT is evident, especially when one considers the loss of translators needed for our war of choice.

  23. Cory says:

    JPark, how am I stupid???

  24. jake3988 says:

Aww, so if the draft is reinstated I won’t be able to get out of it by saying I’m gay (I’m not, but I’ll say I am)

  25. Cory says:

Please, as a gay man I’m happy I can’t fight in this war for oil. As for those who have, I sincerely wish them safety and a swift ride home to their loved ones and countries. While I don’t support the reasons we are in Iraq, I do support our troops and will be behind them all the way.

  26. Democrat Soldier says:

#25 – I kinda wish I was in when they had DA/DT. If they had asked me, I’d say “I’m not allowed to answer that question. Next?”

What’s really funny are the arguments about continuing to bar gay people from serving. They are all silly arguments that have no basis in fact, and they all are based around irrational fear of gay people!

What’s really interesting is the people who “claim” to support the troops don’t care about the armour they didn’t have when they went to war, and they don’t care that the VA is in a shambles.
