Follow-up: Post reports support for Murtha plan.

The Washington Post editorial page has condemned Rep. John Murtha’s (D-PA) plan to increase support for the overstretched U.S. military and restrain Bush’s Iraq escalation. Yesterday, ThinkProgress noted that the Post had released a new poll showing strong support for Murtha’s plan — but no mention of this support was made in the paper’s coverage of the poll. Today, the Post published a new front-page story with the following:

There was clear support, however, for the kinds of conditions proposed by Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.), who wants to establish requirements for the training and resting of military units that would have the effect of limiting the number of troops available to send to Iraq.

Murtha’s plan has drawn fire in the House, including from some of his Democratic colleagues, after it was announced on a liberal Web site. The Post-ABC News poll, which did not associate the plan with Murtha, found that 58 percent of Americans said they support such new rules. Even some Americans, 21 percent, who supported the president’s troop increase said they would favor rules for training and resting troops.

Why in the world would this draw fire from dems? Are they worried that Murtha might find a way to end the war and deprivge them of political lever in ‘08?

  2. barrelhse says:

Oh, Christ-on-toast. Who’s against the Murtha plan?
Anyone against Murtha’s plan is FOR the Bush plan of stretch ‘em thin. If they aren’t killed outright then Bush will work them to death- those who survive will suffer immeasurable damage to their psyche, with no programs to help them when they get home. Heckofa job, White house, just fuckin’ beautiful.
These military personnel are not pawns for the neo-cons; they are our children, sisters, neighbors, and friends. Those who oppose Murtha hate our families and America. Enough of the 31% troglodites calling the shots- let’s take ‘em down.

  3. Zooey says:

    gogreen,

Those are the Dems who need different jobs, come re-election time.

Is it possible for a newspaper to get whiplash? Oy.

  4. Sharon says:

I can’t answer that for sure gogreen but my spin would be perhap’s many like me want all the troop’s home now, not tomorrow, next week or next year. Now, and the war’s ended….Blessings

I looked for the dems in congress that supposedly Murtha “drew fire”. Didn’t see any.

  6. AboveTheClouds says:

Who gives a shit who’s plan it is. Get our men the hell out of there. The death and misery we have visited on those people has only bred more death and misery.

The Democrats have no worry or concern about 2008. Bush and the neocons have made it an impossible proposition to run as a Republican in 2008. How much longer will “conservatives” prop up “Mr. 29% Approval?”

  7. Marie says:

While congress fiddles with politicking, and the WaPo tries to slant the news toward Bush (for whatever indefensible reasons), our military are dying in Iraq, and our domesic problems are multiplying.

  8. Your Conscience says:

Sadly, there are many spineless DINO’s who are more concerned about their own smarmy political carcas than doing what is in the best interest of the nation and troops. There is no refuting that the Bush’s optional clusterfuck will go down in history as a travesty buth these coward Dems are afraid to get involved FEARFUL it will include them and make them accountable.

I have grown so damn weary of the Rape-Public-Can troglydytes and bloviating water carryers like R2, Ballicker, Patrick who keep being obstructionists. Time matters. There are legitimate threats to our nation and people who intend to do us harm. Incompetent AWOL Failure in Chief and defferement Dick have demonstrated their gross incompetence. They are completely innefectual and do more harm than good.

I plead the Dems and real republicans can take action and correct our course. If they do not it may be time to shut it down.

    Exactly.

I got this from Americablog and it is priceless. I have to share it:
How does Laura Bush know that many parts of Iraq are stable – and apparently she knows this through other sources that are NOT the media, since she informs us that the media isn’t telling us the “real” story about Iraq.

So if Laura know the “real story” about Iraq, that isn’t available to the public through the media, then Laura must be privvy to insider information about Iraq, classified information, and I’d like to know why. Because if she’s not being fed classified information that we aren’t privvy to, then the woman is a liar. And if Bush is going to use his wife to justify the biggest foreign policy disaster in decades, if not ever, then the public has the right to call her on her bullshit.

Well, it’s a mistake to think the Post news pages are somehow the same as the insane op-ed pages. We have numerous examples, especially recently, of outstanding reporting by the Post news staff (anecdote: one of their correspondents once answered an email of mine saying how their work kept me reading the Post despite the op-ed pages with a “just ignore them. That’s what I do”). That’s not to say they aren’t part of the establishment press – but they seem to have more good old-fashioned reporters (Dana Priest, Walter Pincus come to mind) than, ahem, the Times, for example.

The entire WaPo staff needs to immediately go on meds. With medication they might be able to balance out thier schizo personality.

  13. big papa says:

Watching this latest Democratic move made me realize how tricky political gamesmanship really is…

…I’ve noticed that the Republicans have morphed from the Party of power into the “helpless”, powerless “victims” of the Democratic onslaught of ‘06…

…a diabolically clever and sinister Republican attempt to transfer Iraq’s “failure” to the Democrats through a series of TREACHEROUS manuevers…

…the so-called “moderate” Republicans: Hagel, Snowe, Graham, Specter, McCain, Coleman, Warner etc…

…played along on the “Non-binding Resolution” but in the eleventh hour fell back into Party line…

…the Republicans are now pushing for a vote on funding-vs-defunding the war…

…Democrats KNOW that without 60 votes in the Senate, NO victory for Democrats (and the people’s will) is possible…

…and the Republicans would use the defunding vote/Murtha’s Plan (which is also sure to fail in the Senate) against them in ‘08…

    Why is this important?

…in ‘08 the Democrats (and the THINKING Progressive American people) have a golden opportunity (after the disastrous Bushite years)…

…to regain the White(man’s) House, possibly changing that moniker to the PEOPLE”S House…

…gaining a super-majority in the Senate, AND maintaining the House…

…there are so many Republican seats up for grabs that the Democrats- if they play their cards right- can actually all but DESTROY the Republicans at the national level in ‘08…

…they have to maintain this delicate balancing act NOW so they don’t hurt themselves THEN (’08)…

…yes troops are dying and the treasury is being looted by thieves…

…but as long as the Republicans can block the 60 vote margin the Democrats have no choice but to stand pat, proceed cautiously…

….and continue to remind everyone that Iraq is a George W. Bush/Republican FAILURE…

…It’s a shame, but you interact with the 34%ers on these threads daily…

…they’re so DUMB that they are actually trying to HELP the Republicans transfer blame of the Iraq FAILURE to Democrats…

I guess what I’m trying to say is that we Progressives have to be patient with IMPEACHMENT, with bringing the troops home and with receiving justice…

…until the Democrats get a 60 vote margin in the Senate, and take back the White(man’s) House, and hopefully keep a super-majority in the House…

…because let’s face it the Republican/Democrat/Independent conned’self-servative 34%ers and (the fence straddlers) are STUPID and will fall for the Republican con in ‘08…

…trapping us ALL in this right wing nightmare like they did in ‘04…

Who cares what we think. Doesn’t matter. We’re not part of the ‘plan.’

Washington Post(tm), “HARD-RIGHT” turn, ABOUT FACE, REAR-WARD, MARCH!!!!!”

  16. barrelhse says:

WaPo still sucks. They’ve got the same clue as the White House- none. I don’t read the Washington Times, either, but at least they’re funny.
