Two Army brigades will forgo desert training.

“Rushed by President Bush’s decision to reinforce Baghdad with thousands more U.S. troops, two Army combat brigades are skipping their usual session at the Army’s premier training range in California and instead are making final preparations at their home bases.”

UPDATE: Speaker Pelosi: “The harmful effects on the readiness crisis of the President’s escalation plan are just beginning to be seen.”

Training? We don’ need no stinkin training!
    We are Federales!

  2. Fool Zero says:

Well, if they’re supposed to be fighting in the streets of Baghdad, maybe they won’t need much desert training.

  3. chimpeach says:

This is exactly what Murtha’s plan is trying to address, getting troops the training they need before sending them over there. And the right-wingers are against it.

  4. PeterW says:

#3 Just what I was going to say. Pelosi can’t make this statement, and distance herself from the Murtha plan. Not and retain any credibility. Thanks for the first 100 hours, Nancy, but this is THE issue of the day.

  5. Spudge_Boy says:

And this is why the resolution calling for our troops to be properly trained and equipped would do wonders.

Oh, I see chimpeach covered this.

But the obscene approach this President has taken with cutting military medical services, lying to the American public, kowtowing to corporate interests and pissing off the entire planet has been obvious for 6 years.

Just impeach the bastardsand we can go about our business of supporting our troops at home where they won’t need desert training. Except when they celebrate in Las Vegas.

That is classic. You don’t mind if I steal that do you Clyde?

Calling W pro-ecologist is the same as calling the Pope pro-abortion.

Let them wear sweatpants over there. If they’ve played some war-like video games, that ought to be enough training anyway, right?? Just don’t let Murtha say anything, or they’ll lose their morale.

    Military Readiness…

When I was in the Army, stationed in the US, one of the training exercises that most low ranking soldiers did not really like, was our month at the NTC (National Training Center) located at Fort Irwin, California. Although we didn’t really like the t….

Way to go, chickenhawk Bush! Send them out there inadequately trained — can’t keep your mission waiting.

  14. Ben says:

I have been to the training area in Question which is in California. I have also been to Iraq. The training that is given at NTC in California is of no use to Iraq, at least it wasn’t when I was there. The ironic thing, I was in the initial invasion of 2003 in Iraq, and was sent to NTC in Jan of 2004. I learned exactly how useless the NTC training was for an urban combat setting as Iraq is.

I never thought the war was right, but not forcing those that are about to go to Iraq to spend an extra month away from their families for useless training is a good thing, not a bad thing, I applaud the people that made the decision not to waste time and money in California.

Here is a KEY element to the story. From the article linked above

Instead of going to the National Training Center first, it imported personnel and equipment – even Toyota pickups like those used by Iraqi insurgents – from the training center at Fort Irwin for two weeks of final rehearsals that begin Wednesday.

OK, they are getting the SAME training in a different environment. Instead of going to Ft. Irwin, they are doing it at Ft. Lewis.

IN the USMC we do something called CAX Mojavi Viper. It used to be called (Combined Arms Excercise) nad takes place at 29 Palms. The focus in on desert warfare. No secret, we have been doing it for years.

Of the 30 day evolution, at least 2 weeks are spent drawing gear and turning in gear. A week before, and a week after. By doing the training at Lewis vice Irwin, they save that 2 weeks. They use their own equipment and supplies. That is all. It may not be a desert environment, but the TACTICS can be practiced just the same.

I don’t think anyone is really ready for 125 degree heat until they experience it. Look forward to several collapses and probably a few deaths from heatstroke.
Nice way to support the troops, putting them in the oven without a clue!

  17. Ben says:

    Skdea,
I know your heart is in the right place but I don’t think there are any of the people that are being deployed that haven’t already been sent over there at least once save for a couple new soldiers. Plus, they won’t go right to Iraq, they will go to Kuwait first.

Correct. Also, it is not 125 degrees over there right now. That won’t start for a few more months.

  19. DoubleTap says:

I’m glad there’s a few commenters in this string that pointed out that the NTC isn’t the end-all and be all when it comes to training. If they can do it at home station without all the time and energy to move those two brigades back and forth, then more power to them. I’m sure those brigade commanders are going to be pushing the training to get them ready. And, as others have said, most of the people in those brigades are already OIF veterans.

It’s still a desert, and do you believe they’ll be home before it’s 125 degrees? These hacks are fcuking you and your friends, but you just keep carrying water for them. Grow a pair, robert.

I am explaining the training evolution factually, not carrying water for anyone.

Anyway, no, I do not expect that they will be home before it is 125 degrees in the desert. We have a Prez that does not want that and a Congress that will not get the balls to do it. But the re is something called “Being acclimated”. You develop a certain amount of tolerance to the heat if you are there. Your body learns to tolerate it better if you have a chance to be there while the temps are climbing, and not thrust into it after it is 125.

Trust me, I know that it will be getting hotter than hell very soon over there. But I also understand the training cycle a little bit too.
