‘Guilt is the new black.’

By Amanda Terkel on Feb 28th, 2007 at 4:50 pm

‘Guilt is the new black.’

Diesel launches a “tongue-in-cheek” ad campaign promoting its spring/summer collection as “Global Warming Ready.” Its ads depicts “landscapes that have been transformed by environmental disaster” and models that “are dressed fashionably if barely (to accommodate the weather) and they lounge amid this hip dystopia in glamorous unconcern, fanning themselves or applying suntan lotion to one another’s tawny backs.” Watch the ad HERE. Find out the facts on global warming at ClimateCrisis.net.

Though I agreed with #1 ForTruth at first, it may be interesting to see where stuff like this could go. If it takes blatant consumerism to help spread awareness, then I’m all for it. The fact that a product may be associated with promoting the factual existence a problem may actually change some minds, even if the purpose of the advertising campaign is to use an important issue just to sell product. It may also spread curiosity.

  12. Spudge_Boy says:

I have to agree with wake-n-bake. I definitely want to stop global warming if it means that we will all look and act like those people. : )

Global warming is not something to be made fun of. It is time that we demand China, Russia, and India Clean up there act. Those 3 countries currently account for 25% of all global emissions while only producing 7% of global GDP. We in the USA need to educate and demand that they move to a more environmental friendly position like we have in the USA. We, in the USA, produce over 25% of the worlds GDP and only account for 24% of the world’s emissions.

If we could get Russia, China, and India to be like us, we would cut world emissions by around 18% which would be the largest possible step to slowing and even stopping Global Warming.

  20. Calvin Klein says:

It’s this kind of nonchalant attitude, displayed in this ad, that contribute to the general public’s indifference to global climate change.

I didn’t find Roger_Roger’s comments to be conservative, I actually thought it was a very good point and he recognized that global climate issues are very important (sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, honestly =) )…

While I question the taste of the advertisements, I believe Diesel is attempting to bring an important issue to the forefront of the fashion industry and the public sec that will see such advertisements in general publications. It is rather tongue and cheek, but a chilling reminder of what may happen if the current scientific reports are true (which I keep praying they are not).

Oh, and Roger_Roger, you st*pid old c*nt, care to share with the classroom what the Pollution per Capita is for the United states compared to the rest of the world? Want to explain why a country with less than 5% of the worlds people is contributing so much of its pollution?

  30. Roger_Roger says:

The List was created by the International Monetary Fund:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_ratio_of_GDP_to_carbon_dioxide_emissions

It shows clearly that the USA produces roughly 25% of the world’s GDP and 24% of the world’s Emissions. It also clearly shows that Russia, China, and India produce 25% of the worlds emissions which is more then the USA while the 3 combined account for only 7% of the world’s GDP. This simply proves that the biggest problem in global warming is Russia, China, and India. Their inefficeincy in GDP output is the biggest problem far and away. If we could help educate and demand that they follow the USA model more closely, we could reduce world emission output by 18% overnight. Reveiwing the data proves that these 3 countries are what the world should be focusing on. Maybe we should tax all goods coming out of these 3 countries to make up and help fund emission clean up projects.

Currently, the USA produces around 2.118 GDP per emission while Russia, China, and India produce around 0.5 GDP per emission. This is unacceptable. The world should demand they move to be more like the USA emissions wise.

    #27,

Looking at emissions and population is fruitless as emissions are a function of output (GDP). Every country that produces alot will be at the top of the charts emissions wise. That is why you need to evaluate how a country does GDP per emissions wise. The USA is the leader of the large economy type countries. Many small non important countries are doing better then the USA, but none of the large economically important ones. This isn’t a politcal statement, it is a statement of fact. I believe in Global Warming and find it is the most dangerous problem we face. And like and problem, we first need to identify were we can make the most difference in the fastest way possible. Currently, the obvious problem is Russia, CHina, and India.

So then emissions by GDP is what you believe that should be measured? Then that puts 38 countries in the world ahead of us, including pretty much the entire EU. So much for American leadership!

Every country that produces alot will be at the top of the charts emissions wise. Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2007 @ 5:57 pm

Uh, that would be your opinion, a lie and the ramblings of a st*pid c*nt.

The Japan and Germany produce almost twice the GDP output per CO2 that the US does. That’s right, c*nt twice.

That is why you need to evaluate how a country does GDP per emissions wise. Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2007 @ 5:57 pm

Then the US sucks wind, just like you – dum bass.

The USA is the leader of the large economy type countries.
    Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2007 @ 5:57 pm

Leader? Japan and Germany (the other two largest economies) have half of the US emissions per GDP. We are a leader in failure – or I should say you Cons are – as usual.

Many small non important countries are doing better then the USA, but none of the large economically important ones. Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2007 @ 5:57 pm

Actually every large important country is doing better. The only ones doing worse are pretty much the Oil nations and the 2nd/third world. Brazil has a better GDP per emissions ratio than the US does.

    This isn’t a politcal statement, it is a statement of fact. Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2007 @ 5:57 pm

The statement of fact, is that you confuse your own political statements with facts. You’re a st*pid ignorant c*nt.

I believe in Global Warming and find it is the most dangerous problem we face. Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2007 @ 5:57 pm

Yet you believe the US shouldn’t show any leadership. St*pid c*nt.

And like and problem, we first need to identify were we can make the most difference in the fastest way possible. Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2007 @ 5:57 pm

Move to alternative energies, instead of spending 300 Billion in Iraq. You could have funded enough alternative energy projects to stop our dependence on fossil fuels with that level of investment.

Currently, the obvious problem is Russia, CHina, and India.

  49. Roger_Roger says:

I never said that these countries should take the lead. I simply said that those countries are to blame for Global warming. The USA, in the end, will take the lead. Taking the lead in this situation means we need to pour our resources and technology on Russia, China, and India to help them clean up and stop there outrageous emissions. We can’t ignore the world’s biggest polluters simply because they are 2nd or 3rd world. To do that would be denying how big a problem global warming is. This problem can’t wait for countries to “develope” and it can’t be fixed if we ignore the world’s largest inefficiencies.

The USA can get better, but our improvements won’t save this world. Fixing Russia, China, and India can in fact stop global warming. IN the end, why get so fired up about America. The best we could hope for is a reduction in our emissions of 20% to maybe 30%. On a global scale, that is a measly 4.5% to 6% reduction. Why not worry about a problem that if fixed would cut global emissions by 18%-20%? That is more bang for your buck afterall.

  50. Roger_Roger says:

Besides, it seems kinda rougg to call these three countries third world when they have more nuclear power and weapons then any other country in the world minus the USA. Calling them third world means Europe isn’t even civilized yet.
