The Houston Chronicle’s Julie Mason provides some insight into how the White House advance team prepared for Bush’s visit to the Gulf Coast today:
One thing Bush likes to do in the Gulf Coast is hand out American flags to families rebuilding their houses. Long before he shows up, Bush’s advance team scouts the non-hostile property owners in a neighborhood, and later, the president drops by and gives the family a flag. The White House thinks this makes for good pictures — and maybe it did, a month after the storm. But a year and half later, with the region still a mess and so many people displaced, it seems a little tone-deaf to be handing out flags — politically, it does invite comparisons to what Bush isn’t doing in the region.
No no… they’re great. You can use them as a tarp for temporary shelter and stuff. Just can’t use ‘em as winter fuel and all.

March 1st, 2007 at 8:22 pmabout annexing Bush and Louisiana, some say this is why there has been a big “inaction” on Bush’s part to do anything about Katrina.
Why would Bush sink “social” money into something he intends upon turning into a bnusiness venture. Oil and real estate.
I am watching this one very closely. I smell some misdeeds with the whole White House reaction to katrina and I smell them BigTime!

March 1st, 2007 at 10:37 pmI saw the brief video clip of his visit to the region on the nightly news.

War Resisters — Support the Troops Who Refuse to Fight
The Army has re-filed charges against Lt. Ehren Watada, the first commissioned officer to refuse deployment to Iraq, following mistrial. Find out the latest developments in his case and how you can help.
It takes courage to say that you will not fight — especially if you are a soldier. As more members of the U.S. military step forward for peace, the peace movement must step forward to support them.
Large numbers are now refusing to serve: The Department of Defense estimates that there are about 8,000 AWOL service members. The GI Rights Hotline http://www.girights.objector.org/
(800-394-9544) is currently receiving about 3,000 calls a month.
Most importantly, a growing number of soldiers are speaking out, against the illegality and immorality of the Iraq war and the orders they are being told to carry out. These brave men and women are risking jail time and their futures to stand up against the war. Click here http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3456 to find out how you can support them.

March 2nd, 2007 at 9:05 amI know how USA people loves to put the flag everywhere so much. We take loyalty to the country more as a given. We have issues too of loyalists using this or that flag, but this issue is too much. Giving a flag to a person who has lost everything to an hurricane, partly under my responsability, is beyond limits. Especially after having insulted them, and short funded everything in the reconstruction.
March 2nd, 2007 at 9:09 amReagan would have done this too… except he would’ve done it a week after the storm. This chowder head does it a year and a half later and expects people to think he’s some great leader.

March 2nd, 2007 at 9:22 amThe people of New Orleans elected a mayor who vowed to turn it into a “chocolate city”; the local government is corrupt and wasted hundreds of millions of U.S. taxpayers’ money earmarked for levees on other questionable projeects; and there is no concerted effort by local or state government to create incentives for re-buidling.
YET-some of you lay the blame at Bush’s feet. How sad and ignorant to go through life looking for scapegoats and donning the insufferable mantle of “victimhood.”
To those who re-elected Nagin-you get what you deserve. To those who think the federal government or Bush is somehow to blame-get off your @ss and go down to New Orleans yourself and rebuild! We welcome you.

March 2nd, 2007 at 10:21 amLocal officials are not blameless in NO, JT, but this was a national tragedy, a national emergency, a city was drowned! This was far more than a local issue — Bush&Co along with FEMA were abysmal failures, and they still are.
March 2nd, 2007 at 10:25 amThe loss of an American city is apparently not enough for you to blame Bush — I will add that to the long list of items for which republiscum stubbornly and wrongly believe are not Bush’s responsibility.
The cold and callous attitude that afflicts so many republiscum toward their fellow Americans is not only outrageous, it is appalling.
March 2nd, 2007 at 10:26 amIs this idiot serious?
March 2nd, 2007 at 12:06 pmI was astonished (Not) to see the news coverage of his visit last night, in an all White neighborhood, where things are progressing nicely. I noticed that he didn’t visit the other 80% of Black New Orleans or mention that that the Black Population has dwindled down 65%, or that public housing has not re-opened (even when it is not damaged, or that $200K of drinking water is leaking into the grouond each day due to damage, or that 600 (or so) homeowners out of 109, 000 have received Fed. Assistance to re-build……ad nauseum!
March 2nd, 2007 at 12:27 pmIt just disgusting!
So I guess the next time say, Floriday, is hit with a hurricane, the people should just “stand on their own two feet” and get no assistance, right?
And the next time a tornado devestates an entire town like, say, Commerece, Miss., the people should just “stand on their own two feet” with no assistance, right?
And I guess all those people who were devestated by 9/11 should have just “stood on their own two feet” as well, right?
It must suck to wake up every day and be you …

So, for the amount we’ve spent in Iraq to date, we could have rebuilt all the damage caused by Katrina 3 TIMES!! President Bush, WHERE/WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES!?!
Oh and JT, I DEFY you to find a local government that ISN’T corrupt in some way shape or form. The victims of Katrina, as you so lovingly portrayed them, are some of the poorest people in this country. They really do NEED the help, regardless of your opinion as to who’s to blame for this tragedy.

March 2nd, 2007 at 1:45 pmTo Unholy Moses: Your comparison of natural disasters with 9/11 is asinine.
The victims of 9/11 had no chance to remove themselves from danger or, as sensible persons do, buy insurance to protect against property loss or damage for an ACT OF WAR.
This faulty logic of yours (and the sympathetic responses you draw) only illustrate the problems with American society today-NO PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY.
EVERYONE, by your logic, can I count on you to bail me out when my home gets flooded too, or should I take measures to protect myself and my family instead? Sheesh…

The blame being laid at Bush’s feet is for failing to lead.
There are certainly many problems in New Orleans. But, seeing the inability of the locals to cope should stir him to lead real, concrete, decisive action. Leadership is his job, after all.
All he offers is empty promises, platitudes and a smirky grin.

With all due respect, I have not questioned your integrity or motives.
Unless you know what I have done, or where I have been, please have the decency to not question mine.
My comments were directed at the President, whose nationally-televised failures are all too obvious.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:34 pmWhat fraudulent crap. Army Corps of Engineering, who build and maintian the levees is not a municipal or state entity but a Federal agency. The entire area was declared THREE DAYS BEFORE KATRINA HIT, to be an incident of national significance and thus was under direct Federal control and authority. Is there corruption and waste on the local and state level in Louisiana generally and New Orleans specifically… of course. Just like there is ANYWHERE in the world and both in the private and public sector. But to claim, fraudulently, that someone local authorities appropriated levee funds elsewhere is bullshit writ large.
Spin all you want, but this was a Federal fuck-up form the get go, and falls squarely in the gross negligence and rank incompetence of this administration and is simply an outgrowth of the Grover Norquest “drown Government in the bathtub” philosophy put into action. Congratulations, you drown an entire city with GOP incompetence and have the temerity to blame everyone else but Chimpy McFlightsuit. Some party of “personal responsibility”, THIS is the result of the GOP way of doing business, and the results of the Bush admsinitration. This isn’t some theortical or abstract debate. GOP/Bush incompetence KILLED people and has failed to live up to the basic obligations of Governance.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:36 pmFYI, my previous post was directed at JT’s BS at #51
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:36 pmNo, it’s not.
Tens of thousands of people in New Orleans had NO WAY TO LEAVE. They lacked the money, the car or, thanks to police officers who blocked off a bridge and threatened to kill anyone who crossed it, the escape route.
As far as your “personal accountability” crack — coming from someone who supports a president who has blamed EVERYONE else for his own failings, it’s kinda funny … in a sad and pathetic way.
Your inability to show even an ounce of compassion for others is quite remarkable, and says all that needs saying about your character.
.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:54 pmUnholy Moses:
Please learn to read for comprehension. I NEVER said I supported the president, and your presumption totally misses the mark of my posts.
My posts state that you (and your silly ilk) need to quit blaming others for this problem and get to work FIXING the problem-such that I have and will continue to do so. I suppose you also think that Bush created the forces that spawned the Hurricane itself…
March 2nd, 2007 at 5:07 pmI’d sooner have the National Guard on tap and ready for relief in natural disasters as have their arms and legs blown off for no good reason at all, as long as my taxes are paying for them. Not to mention FEMA.
Cans full of change from minimarts can’t be the primary means of coping with catastrophic natural disasters, JT, and I want to live in a country where the taxes I pay help ensure that neither my family, nor yours, has to endure prolonged refugee status or the complete decimation of our personal/local/regional economy. That’s supposed to be one of the benefits of living in a “First World” country, and it’s not too much to expect.
March 2nd, 2007 at 5:22 pmConsidering I spent two weeks there working with Habitat for Humanity, I’ll bet a million bucks I did more to help then you ever did.
Spawn the hurricane? No.
Appoint an incompetent twit to head up FEMA? Yes.
Stayed on vacation and showed no compassion during the horrific aftermath? Yes.
Lied about knowing the levees could fail? Yes.
So depleted the Guard via the Iraq war that there too few to help? Yes.
If you don’t support Bush, why don’t hold him to the same “personal accountability” metrics as you do people with no ability to leave a flooded city?
Or is nothing his fault?
.
March 2nd, 2007 at 5:36 pmUnfortunately I have to jump in here now. To the one wondering about Trent Lott’s slab that used to be a house- I doubt that it has been rebuilt, but I’ll check for you.
I am SOOOO tired of hearing about NO. Yes, it’s a great city that I loved visiting, but to put it’s devastation on the same level as the rest of the Gulf Coast is wrong. Most of the coast of MS was leveled thanks to Katrina and Katrina alone. The stupid comment about insurance shows that you haven’t kept up with the news. The insurance companies are claiming that these people’s house being gone is because of flood damage, not the hurricane, which is crazy. But that does explain why some of the people are still living in FEMA trailers.
On the other hand, NO is in the situation they are now based on the levees failing. They weathered the hurricane and all breathed a huge sigh of relief- a sigh that was NOT being felt in their neighboring counties and state. Then, and only then, did their hell begin- a hell caused by 25 years of failure to deal with the levees. I have a friend whose husband worked for the Core of Engineers there in the 80’s. It was the same song, different verse, even then. When I lived in MS, they were always talking about what would happen to NO if another Camille came through. They KNEW they were screwed!
Now, does that mean we shouldn’t have compassion and work to help them? Not at all. Does that mean that Bush is still a prick- absolutely. But, unfortunately, the blame will have to go to a whole lot of stupid politicians from the local level all the way up, from many years ago to today (the levees still suck). But PLEASE remember the victims who can’t blame anyone except Katrina!
March 2nd, 2007 at 7:25 pmSicNtired: I’ll see your Katrina and raise you a Rita.
Not that I’m here to play “who’s devestation was worse.”
But you’re missing several important points here. The devestation in New Orleans, you rightly pointed out, was because of the Federal Flood caused by the leeve failures. The levees were FEDERALLY maintained. Don’t try to put these failures on the locals. The ACoE let them fall into disrepair, and the constant cutting of their funding under Bush only exacerbated matters. It is the federal government’s fault New Orleans flooded in the first place. And Bush can never make up for his failure to respond to the crisis (not that he’s actually tried.)
If it wasn’t for what happened to New Orleans, do you really think Bush would have made a single stop in, or reference to Katrina-affected areas in Mississippi? I’ll put it another way: Did Bush include SW Louisiana, or even SE Texas (his “home” state) in his visit?
If it weren’t for New Orleans, Katrina would be just as forgotten by the government and general population as Rita has been. We’re not OK either. We’re angry, too.
But, I guess, that’s what we get for not living in a swing-state during an election year with a Republican President.
