Feingold Warns Congress: Oppose ‘George Bush’s War’ Now, Or We’ll ‘Start Owning’ It»

Earlier in the week, the Senate decided to “hold off debating a repeal of the 2002 Iraq war authorization.” Now, it will not debate the war for at least two weeks.

Today on MSNBC, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), a strong advocate for redeployment from Iraq, urged the Senate to “use the power of the purse” to end the war. He added, “You know what? If the Democrats don’t use their power, when we’re in the majority in both houses, we’re going to start owning this war. It is George Bush’s war, but if we don’t get serious we’re going to start owning this war.” Watch it:

Transcript:

I would prefer a clean effort to try to eliminate the funding for the war, to actually have a date like we did with Somalia, where the war will end. But the fact is that when I propose a deadline a year and a half ago, people said well, there’s no support for that, even the Democrats are against it. Well, now it’s in all the drafts.

So, the fact is that people come to the realization that if we’re going to end this war, we’re to have use our real power. The power of the purse. And I can tell from you private conversations, the realization is growing that the only way to stop this thing is to use our power. You know what? If the Democrats don’t use their power, when we’re in the majority in both houses, we’re going to start owning this war. It is George Bush’s war, but if we don’t get serious we’re going to start owning this war.

Why is this man not running for president?

  2. Patrick1 Says:

    Surrender or else!

  3. Spudge_Boy Says:

Rus is right on the money. Hell, even the trolls here are starting to call it the Democrats war. They know that that need to get as far away from it as possible to win an election in ‘08.

End the God d*mn war already!

  4. Zooey Says:

Oh hell yes, My Sweet Russ, the Republicans would LOVE to see this war become the next administration’s problem. Ending it, paying for it, cleaning it up….

    Stop the f*cking funding.

  5. Spudge_Boy Says:

Oh boy Patrick1 is back. Doesn’t he know how stupid his little one line comments are? Doesn’t he realize that his party is losing and he needs to get with the majority of Americans or face the fact that his party will never hold power again? Doesn’t he realize that he is scared of his own shadow and is a fascists wet dream?

  6. Zooey Says:

I love this man, if I were 20 year’s younger I would throw myself at his feet and beg to have his children…Blessings
    Comment by Sharon

I’m afraid you’d have a fight on your hands, Sharon. I gotta draw the line somewhere. :)

  7. emh Says:

He is soo right!! He was the one for me, as far as presidential material. Hey…if I wasn’t married…? Kidding. Love this man!

  8. chris Says:

    Patrick1,

I served 18 months in Iraq. Who is the enemy? They could never tell us. What is the mission? Our chain of command never had an answer for that either? How do we know what “victory” is or if we have accomplished our mission, if we do not even know what the mission is?

Republicans have repeatedly shown nothing but hatred for the troops. You hate America, you hate veterans, you hate our freedom and all that our country stands for.

  9. hellinabucket Says:

I’m glad he’s not running for president. He’s not doing photo ops and pep rallies. He’s doing the work all elected officials should be doing. There are 3 co equal branches of this government and he is holding up his end.

I don’t care how far the current republicans try to run away and deny. This is their conflict and they will wear it around their neck just as Jacob Marley did.

Or as p1 is trying to show. “Don’t look at facts, or history, or our constiution. Just be afraid!!!!!!?”

  10. Zooey Says:

    Spudge,

Patrick knows that he can disrupt an entire thread by throwing in his moronic one-liners. That’s his goal, and we fall for it everytime.

    Just sayin’

  11. chris Says:

    Patrick1,

I fought in Iraq. My father fought in Vietnam. My grandfather fought in WWII. You should be ashamed to show your face in public. The republicans want nothing more than to sell this country to the communists. YOU are what we would have had to deal with if the Nazis would have won.

GO AWAY AND NEVER COME BACK

#6 - Doesn’t he realize that his party is losing and he needs to get with the majority of Americans or face the fact that his party will never hold power again?” Comment by Spudge_Boy — March 1, 2007 @ 5:35 pm

Careful there, Spudge_Boy! That’s what the house Republicans said in 1995 when they took majority status! Wow, were they WRONG or what?!?!!?

It’s possible that the Republicans will regain majority status, but it will take a while for America to forget how badly they screwed up by voting for them. Also, the stench of the entrenched Republican “culture of corruption” will not disipate quickly, especially with so many big-named Republican having been found guilty for the crimes they committed over the past 12 years.

I hope and pray that if/when the Republicans begin to clean up their shoddy public face that they give the neo-con cabal that has been leading them around by the nose the old “heave ho”.

And by “heave ho”, I don’t mean “a large prostitute.”

  13. tim Says:

When Russ first announced that he wasn’t going to run in ‘08, I was very disappointed. I believe he is the very best and most qualified candidate to be president at this time. However, now that there are about ten or so of what i would call varying degrees of Republican Light running (except Kucinich), I am very glad not to see Russ bunched together with them. If I could have my way, the perfect democratic ticket would be Al Gore and Russ, with either of them in either position(president or vice).

  14. Democrat Soldier Says:

#12 - Chris, you’re wasting your time talking to Patrick1.

Patrick1 is a classic “chicken-hawk”, someone who’s more than willing for our soldiers to die in a “war for oil” based on the lies of Pres. Bush. he’s also too un-patriotic to actually serve his country by enlisting. Heaven fobid that Patrick1 actually serve the United States of America! That’s quite below him and many of those like him!

I appreciate your service to our country.

My Army service was from 86-90, and I was never called upon to fight in a war, but I would have honored my committment had I been in when we went to war.

  15. chris Says:

    Feingold/Clark ‘08 !!

  16. Patrick1 Says:

Feingold wants to give up to the Islamists. First he takes our freedom of speech then he wants to give our liberties to the Islamo Fascists, the man is a coward.

  17. Sharon Says:

Democrat Soldier, I nominate your “heave ho” I don’t mean ” a large prostitute” as a classic and priceless….Blessings

  18. Karim Says:

    Feingold is so right.

  19. Barbara Bush Says:

#18- I think you have your facts mixed. My son is responsible for what you attribute to Feingold, my dear sweet, silly little boy.

  20. Patrick1 Says:

For this leftwing clown to use Somalia as an example shows just how clueless he is. The surrender of Somalia by the corrupt Clinton administration showed Osama Bin Laden that the U.S. was cowardly and could be attacked at will as he did throughout the disasterous 90s.

  21. Barbara Bush Says:

Uh-oh… The numbers were switched. I was speaking to Patrick.

  22. John H. Farr Says:

I got news for Feingold: the Dems ALREADY own this war by continuing to fund it.

Personally, I’ve completely given up on both parties. We don’t have an anti-war party representing the American people. Too goddamn bad, say I.

  23. Sharon Says:

Post’s disappearing again…..Thought they worked on the site all morning and half the night.

Will try again Zooey, I concede, Youth and beauty win’s out against age and wrinkles, this time…LOL…..you get Feinegould and I get Kevin Costner and George Clooney…O.K.?..Blessings

Dems nix idea of military budget cuts

By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer
    3/1/2007 28 minutes ago

Just hours after floating the idea of cutting $20 billion from President Bush’s $142 billion request for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan next year, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (news, bio, voting record) was overruled by fellow Democrats Thursday.

“It’s nothing that any of us are considering,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters … [T]he speed with which it was rejected by his colleagues seemed to reflect Democrats’ sensitivity to any accusations of giving shortshrift treatment to funding for troops in battle.

“Our caucus feels strongly that we should go with the president’s numbers” on 2008 war costs, Conrad said. He spoke just hours after floating the idea of curbing Bush’s request for next year’s war budget.

  25. DMom Says:

    Comment for Barbara Bush….

Don’t cloud your beautiful mind with such things.

  26. Barbara Bush Says:

#22- Obama said today the Dems are fearful of not funding the war because they think the Prez will send the troops anyway, with no arms, weapons or training. Hell, the troops are currently being sent with no training, as it is. That’s how silly that little rationale is. -heh- (Don’t tell George I said that.)

  27. Barbara Bush Says:

#25- Thank you, dear. It IS a beautiful mind to be sure, and I DO try to not cloud it.

  28. Martin Gifford Says:

Why can’t the democrats come up with a multifaceted plan to deal with Iraq and the Middle East?

Just opposing the war and withdrawing troops is unsatisfactory.

America must improve relationships in the region, regain moral authority, and come up with a constructive plan.

Simplistic thinking (”You are either for us or against us”) got us into the war. It won’t heal the damage.

    Martin Gifford.

  29. Gregor Samsa Says:

It is George Bush’s war, but if we don’t get serious we’re going to start owning this war.

Duh. They will own this war. I could have told them that.

Pres Bush already told them so a little while back: “We’re not leaving, so long as I’m the President.”

He has also refused to set timetables to withdraw the troops from Iraq.

Unless Congress ends the funding, whoever is the next president will own the war. George Bush won’t do anything to address the problems in Iraq; he will close his eyes, ears, try to do damage control (and message control), and hope things don’t get too bad before he leaves office.

Unless there is political will to address the problems, the kabuki dance will continue and the next president will inherit the war. Just like with Vietnam.

  30. Marty Didier Says:

The War won’t be the only thing Congress will end up owning!

There is a mountain more of other horrible acts besides the War, that hasn’t surfaced yet and they’re ALL linked.

If Congress doesn’t start behaving correctly, they all will end up wearing not only the War but everything else linked to it. How does anyone expect that these ongoing crimes got this far in the first place? The support system has been busy with other crimes that are far worse.

How do I know? I was in a family for more than 26 years who is directly involved in what they refer to as being “The World’s Largest Criminal System“! Look around, doesn’t it look as though something strange with a criminal link is linked to this?

  31. Goehl Says:

Off topic BE watchful for a rigged VA survey from our government. 21,000 surveys have been sent out to our veterans and I will just bet it is to the higher % rated disabled vets who qualify for the most care - not the Iraq vets we hear about everyday getting screwed over.

There is a guy down the street, in his 80’s(?) who receives 100% service connected VA disability. A couple of months ago he got a survey in the mail asking him to rate his care from VA. He did not answer and he started receiving phone calls demanding he do the survey on the phone if needed. He became nervous suspecting identity theft so he called the VA. Yes, VA through someone else are doing surveys 21,000 have been sent out and what do you want to bet it is to the “happy” vets with a high disability rating therefore receiving better care and will give a good score. He was outraged as his grandson has a friend, an Iraq vet getting the screw job. He did not receive a survey.

  32. AboveTheClouds Says:

Repeat often and loudly: THIS IS GEORGE BUSH’S WAR.

  33. ForTruth Says:

Congress owns complicity in this whole criminal charade. Especially the 109th. Can we call back the 109th and hold them accountable for allowing this entire mess?

  34. ForTruth Says:

Can we call back the 109th and hold them accountable for eroding the Democaracy, and moving towards a dictatorship?

  40. veritas Says:

I love Russ Feingold! He’s one of only THREE in Congress who voted NO to enable Bush’s war to begin with. Now he’s doing his patriotic best to “do the right thing” for this country as well as for our troops (country throwing good money after bad to the tune of tanking our own economy and being “owned” by foreign countries - and taking our troops out of “harm’s way” in this ugly Civil War).

I’d love for Russ to reconsider a run for the Presidency or VP in 08. My dream ticket might be “Obama/Feingold”……I believe Russ would reinforce Obama’s rejection of this war from the outset, bolster public support for the end of this debacle, as well as bring two very qualified, honest individuals into power in the WH - something which has been disgustingly absent now for the past 6 years.

It’s time for the american people to respect their President and Vice President once again. It’s time to bring back enthusiasm, faith, and trust in those whom we elect to run this country in a moral fashion….it’s simply TIME!

  41. veritas Says:

And one would have to wonder how 9/11 fits into this diabolical plan, Sharon? I think some of us know the ugly answer to that dot connecting and, if the Dems don’t get off their butts and put the screws to this GOP and administration, then they will become complicit by association (guilt by association). The people are getting very restless in this country right now and a feeling of pent-up frustration is beginning to be noted everywhere one looks. Couple this with our porous borders and the illegal drug cartels doing business overtly in this country and we’ve got the perfect prescription for disaster.

  42. veritas Says:

Time to cut the financial umbilical cord to this war, democrats! If you fail to do so and do so immediately, you will lose the respect of the american people who elected you. Then 08 will be out of the question as a third party surfaces - if the Dems can’t do the job, we’ll find someone who can!

(snicker, snicker…..cheney grin….SEG personified….I see that some of the resident trolls are home from school and posting. Amazing how once we out them it’s so easy to simply skip over their drivel, isn’t it? Their posts are inane, pathologically skewed, illiterate, and uninformed so why bother when you see their monikers - right, patrick1?)…LOL

  43. rachel Says:

    ZetaTalk: Human Condition

    Note: written July 5, 1995

The human condition, on Earth at this time, is deliberately one of confusion. We will examine several situations that may help to clarify the issues at play.

First, humans desire security. The human condition is insecure. From birth, or particularly at birth, the human is acutely aware of its insecure position. Nude, tiny, unable to navigate, utterly dependent on others. The human infant wants to dominate those it is dependent upon. It is natural for the human to want to dominate its environment. The human wants to control the climate, the seasons. Homes are structured to provide summer warmth year round. Food is grown or at least provided as though harvest season were year round. Storms have no effect, nor do catastrophes have effect. There is social security, the umbrella of government aid. Floods and hurricanes are but another reason to open the government coffers. All this is evidence that the human wants to dominate its environment.

Second, the desire to dominate goes outside of inanimate factors. The human wants to dominate the other humans in its vicinity. Starting with the infant’s desire to dominate its mother, all her attention, and on to the stage of public opinion, the human desires to be the focus of attention. The infant wants its cry to bring immediate attention. The adult want its comments to bring rapt attention from others in the conversation group. No difference. Those who can command attention will get their needs met - so goes the logic. The infant displaced by a younger sibling is insecure, as it is no longer the focus of attention.

Third, love comes into play. Love, or empathy, is something felt at an early age. Empathy is not an emotion reserved for the intelligent, sentient being alone. Love and empathy are felt by all forms of life, even plant life, to some degree. It is a factor of life. It is intrinsic to life. Love and empathy pull the human into a conflict situation with its desire for security, to be the center of attention. Decisions are made to share the spotlight, to share resources. These decisions vary greatly, among humans. Some humans consider others on the same plane as the self. Other humans rarely, if ever, consider others, and never on the same plane as the self.

  52. Cory Says:

Rachel, great post. Unfortunately I don’t think most of the negative posters on here will be able to hold their attention spans to read past the second sentence, so most of it will be lost on them. Indeed, I’m certain by the third sentence, assuming they get that far, their attention will be brought back to that shiny object on the corner of the desk, or pounding on the keyboard. Sad really.

  53. Cory Says:

Good evening beautiful Zooey. How goes it today? Where in the country are you (assuming you’re in the US)? I hope you’re no where near these horrible storm systems I’ve been seeing on the news…

  54. Zooey Says:

    My dear Cory,

Storms? What storms? I have no TV, so there are no storms. :)

I am in the deepest red state of Idaho — northern Idaho. I’m only a mile from the border of Washington, so I can make a break for it if I need to. I just don’t want to pay out of state fees to the University, so I have to stay for a while.

  55. Cory Says:

    Zooey, touche. ;)

I should turn off the tv, but I have EyeTV running on my Mac, so the news is always on in the upper right hand corner of my monitor while I type away. I should learn my lesson and turn it off, at least my blood pressure would even out and my anxiety would lessen a bit lol.

Never been to northern Idaho, heard it’s beautiful though. New Yorker here, our buildings and sidewalks are the hills and rivers of New York City.

  56. Zooey Says:

I’ve been (and lived) in lots of places around this country, but never New York City. I’ve always wanted to visit NYC, and someday I will. I’ll catch a bug in my mouth because I’ll be looking around like a tourist.

Since I haven’t had TV, my blood pressure is zero, and I feel so relaxed that I leave my name, address and telephone number in men’s rooms all over town. You believe me, don’t you? :-D

  63. PoliticalCritic Says:

Not running for President is probably the best move Feingold has made. Now he feels free to speak his mind and say what many are already thinking. More need to oppose this war.

It’s going to be both scary and interesting to see what’s what after the ‘08 election. If Guliani is elected, business as usual. If Hillary is elected, business as usual, with placation on the side. If Obama or Edwards is elected, I predict all hell will break loose, in that the neocons will try to disrupt, corrupt, smear and rig the election. If it works and a neo is “elected” the liberals will raise hell, if it doesn’t the neos will raise hell. If the troops start being shipped home, the neocons are going to quit investing in war, and the dow and economy will drop (and it will anyway, at least a little as when any new president is elected big investors play wait and see for at least a few months). I believe 2009 is going to be a watershed year. Some have made the prediction that 2009 is when Armegeddon will occur…

Well, I am single and close to his same age. You think I should throw myself at his feet? ;) I love the man too.

Actually, he shows just how worthless our Democrats are. We think Feingold is a hero because he is doing what we elected ALL of them to do. He stands out because he is the rare Senator who has the gonads to do what is right. Only one who voted against the Patriot Act too.

He is right on this. I know a whole lot of people who voted Dem this time that if the Democrats do not get us out, will go back to voting Republican or just not vote.

  67. Cheryl Says:

I predict election rigging will happen on the Primary level long before the General. It happens all the time. Hillary has stated her biggest fear is the Primaries. She has the team, resources, and enough corrupt people on her side to do it too. I rarely meet anyone who supports her in the 5 Western states I work in and yet the press keeps reporting she is ahead. Obama on the other hand, gets rave reviews from voters and activists I talk to and Edwards gets positive feedback too.

Everyone assumes it is just the General elections that are stolen but primaries are the big one.

  68. DanTheMan Says:

Make the democrats “own” the war may not be such a bad thing. The war in Iraq is very winnable, all that is need is a strategy change. If the dems take this war, and finish it properly, then the republicans will get the humiliation they deserve.
To cut and run from this war would be a huge mistake. It doesn’t matter that it was started with lies, and run by idiots. America’s good name has been dragged through the mud, and the only way to clean it up is to make things better, not run away.

  69. Party Aside Says:

Whereas I appreciate everyone’s comments here, the fact of the matter is that History will show that President Bush was the one who “got it” (much like Churchill) and everyone else just politicized the event(s) for their own advantage. I feel so very sorry for all of those that cannot seem to find a better use of the English language to debate their point other than profanity.
