Laura IS NOT off a bit. We were having mid-morning cocktails again the other day and she seemed just fine. She only stumbled a little as I got up to use the ladies room (which, by the way, was filthy!).
She did say one bombing a day, clearly meaning suicide bombings. Give me a break people. There is a different between attacks and bombings. Maybe there should be a blog to point out the innacuracy of the claim here.
An authoritative US study of terrorist attacks after the invasion in 2003 contradicts the repeated denials of George Bush and Tony Blair that the war is not to blame for an upsurge in fundamentalist violence worldwide. The research is said to be the first to attempt to measure the “Iraq effect” on global terrorism. It found that the number killed in jihadist attacks around the world has risen dramatically since the Iraq war began in March 2003. The study compared the period between 11 September 2001 and the invasion of Iraq with the period since the invasion. The count – excluding the Arab-Israel conflict – shows the number of deaths due to terrorism rose from 729 to 5,420. As well as strikes in Europe, attacks have also increased in Chechnya and Kashmir since the invasion. The research was carried out by the Centre on Law and Security at the NYU Foundation for Mother Jones magazine.
“Our study shows that the Iraq war has generated a stunning increase in the yearly rate of fatal jihadist attacks, amounting to literally hundreds of additional terrorist attacks and civilian lives lost. Even when terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan is excluded, fatal attacks in the rest of the world have increased by more than one third.”
No.. no… Of course there are 290 attacks a day, but only one of them ‘discourages’ people. I’m sure the others inspire people… give them hope…. you know… put a little zing into your coffee breaks. No problem there…..
Let’s see, if I invest $1,000,000 in the stock market and my investing strategy is off by 229 parts out of 230, my million dollars would end up being worth $4,348. Maybe Laura Bush caused the stock market crash the other day.
Wasn’t Laura GETTING PLASTERED singing “99 Bottles of Beer…” WHILE DOWNING ONE BOTTLE FOR EVERY STANZA OF THE SONG SHE FINISHED? This lady NEEDS TO GET SOME HELP–No, her hubby CHIMPya NEEDS HELP MORE THAN SHE DOES!!!!!
I think what Laura Bush said is ridiculous and naive, but there IS a difference between a bombing and an attack, so let’s not overreact. A distinction is easily made between a bombing and an attack with a minimum of thought. A “bombing” is an attack that USES BOMBS. An “attack” is a much more general term and could be a bombing, but it could also be a shooting, stabbing, beating, or something else other than a bombing.
In your desire to prove someone else wrong, be careful not to get it wrong yourself.
there is no difference between a bombing and an attack, if you are dead or wounded.
The two are only different if you are the perpetrator of the violence, and trying to justify your actions.
Perhaps the First-Lady-Commander-in-Chief was only talking about the first bomb each day…you know, one bomb in the morning and your shot for the rest of the day!
Ah, Laura, you bring to mind that wonderfully catchy little tune from Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road…

I seem to be explaining to a third grader. It is simple, when somebody straps a bomb to their chest and goes into a building or public area pretending to be a citizen and blows up many people it is different than somebody taking a gun and shooting military personnel. Do you understand what she meant now?

Yeah, because being taken into an alley or some room somewhere, tortured, then executed and having your body tossed into the Tigris is MUCH better than just getting blown up by a bomb.
Are you THAT stupid to want to argue that there is ANY valid point in trying to differentiate the vapid and fraudulent attempt by the First Stepford Wife Lady to down-play and dismiss the level of violence in Iraq caused by her jack-off husbands criminal war?
#53 you talking American military casualties or just causalities in total (i.e. Iraqi causalities)
And so you don’t think finding 40 bodies in the Tigris is not “discouraging” to people and only one of multiple bombings which often occurs daily in Iraq (Pickles only downplays it as only one bombing a day) is NOT an attempt to downplay the violence and turn that frown upside down?
How do you know what her intent was?

Comment by rabidbunny
Actually, most bombings in Iraq are roadside bombs, which are inherently more effective than suicide bombs because they don’t require the death of the bomber.
This shocking detachment is just the latest episode of callousness from the still-popular First Lady. During the 2006 mid-term elections, Laura Bush belittled actor Michael J. Fox, a proponent of stem cell research and victim (along with 1.5 million Americans) of Parkinson’s disease. Of his advocacy efforts, Mrs. Bush sneered, “It’s always easy to manipulate people’s feelings.” And in a May 2006 interview with Fox News, Laura shrugged off her husband’s abysmal approval ratings:
“I don’t really believe those polls. I travel around the country, I see people, I see their response to my husband, I see their response to me…A lot of people come up to me and say, ‘Stay the course.’”
Actually, most bombings in Iraq are roadside bombs, which are inherently more effective than suicide bombs because they don’t require the death of the bomber.
And those car bombings have somebody committing suicide when they blow up. So they are suicide bombings…nice try.
As for having 4 on the 28th, did you take into account days when there are none. Maybe I can explain this for you to understand. If one day there are four and then none for three days in a row…the average is one.
Well, how do YOU know what her intent was? I’m not trying to say whether or not she meant suicide bombers, I’m talking about you not practicing what you preach. That’s what I mean by back-pedalling, bunny. You hop all over others for interpreting the Laura Bot’s words, but you’re doing the same thing.
I don’t know what her intent was…but given what she actually said and actually using commons sense I can come to a much more plausible conclusion. Pretty simple, she said bombings not attacks. Not back pedalling or hypocricy in any way. So take your ad hominem attacks. You can’t argue with the facts, so you try attack me. So you can change my username all you want, but everybody knows you can’t argue the substance of what I have said.
And those car bombings have somebody committing suicide when they blow up. So they are suicide bombings…nice try.
From Wikipedia:
Since August, 2003, suicide car bombs have been increasingly used as weapons by Sunni militants, primarily al Qaeda targeting crowds of Shi’ite civilians. The car bombs, known in the military as vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, have emerged as one of their most effective weapons, along with the roadside improvised explosive devices. They are driven by extremist bombers mainly from Arab countries with a history of militancy such as Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Egypt, and Pakistan. Suicide bombers also direct attacks against the mainly-Shi’ite Iraqi police stations and recruiting centers
Sweet, a battle of semantics. The fact is she was trying to downplay the amount of violence occurring in Iraq. Whether there actually is technically one bombing per day (on average) is irrelevant. Her statement was asinine and misleading.
The only reason they’re even trotting Laura out there is because her approval numbers are much higher than her husband. If she keeps up this crazy talk and lies, nobody will like her either.
