Army Sgt. William “B.J.” Beardsley,

a 25-year-old soldier, re-enlisted and served another tour in Iraq in part to pay “for the health insurance to cover his wife’s medical bills.” Beardsley died Monday after a roadside bomb went off near his vehicle, one day after his wife left the hospital.

There is only one thing to say about this heartbreaking story. This is a SIN. He died because his family didn’t have health insurance! My son is only 2 years younger, and I am so glad that he is not a member of the military. SHAME on this administration, SHAME on this government, SHAME on this country. We need to take this country back from the people that have driven it into the ground for the past six years!!

Actually we’re ripping sacks of sh*t like you that stand in the way of universal health care. Without sickos like you, this man wouldn’t need to be so desperate and to die so his wife might live. You’re a fcukhead Roger.

OMG. This just sends chills down my spine.
My brother-in-law is in Iraq again, his 3rd deployment. He re-upped because my sister, is being screwed over by the VA for complications due to her injuries, so she would be able to get medical while she appeals.

This just sucks. My heartfelt condolences to his widow.

The “ripping” is on a government that has failed it’s first function, which is to provide for the well-being of it’s own people. I agree with you that this young man is a hero…and he shouldn’t have died for health insurance!!!

  11. Mr. Evil says:

I say investigate the think tank (drunk tank) Project for the New American Century (PNAC) and all of it’s signatories which includes Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz and Donald Rumsfeld. Their cockamamie, convoluted ideals are the only reason we went to Iraq in the first place. Our military was used for this ridiculous plan and had nothing to do with defending our nation. These people need to be investigated, arrested, tried, convicted and then jailed.

  14. Roger_Roger says:

#10 Government’s first function is not providing Healthcare. LOL, its first function is providing us with a military to protect us. Healthcare isn’t even supposed to be a government function. If you want Universal health care prove to me that it will be better then what we have. Currently, we have an 85% success rate with our current system. Government has never had a success rate on any program close to that. Man, I’d give anything for a success rate even close to that in education. Our healthcare system did not “fail” this man anyways. That isn’t even the story. Our Healthcare system worked as his wife got the care she needed and obviously got better as she “left the hospital”. This man died in the line of duty. I just hope that he had all the equipment needed. Congress needs to act ASAP to increase funding and equipment for our soldiers. Readiness of our soldiers is not good right now due to lack of funding. Write your congressmen and beg them to get the funding our troops deserve!

You see, you currently have options. Many jobs provide healthcare. This man’s job provided healthcare. He is in the same position many are in. YOu can’t up and leave your job on a whim without having a new job that provides the same benefits, especially if you have a sick family member. He isn;t alone. My wife had to wait to switch jobs until the health beneifts worked out.

  15. ES says:

Where do you get “85% success rate” from? What does that even mean? Despite the risk that soldiers currently face in their line of work, it is not for our defense unfortunately. A small fraction of the money we are spending to destroy Iraq could have been spent on healthcare.

I hear stories like this and just feel hopeless about the situation.

  16. Zooey says:

Roger — Who is “ripping” this dead soldier? I defy you to identify even one of us doing that.

  17. Tuber says:

    #14,

You obtuse buffoon. Your argument actually supports the very thing that you rail against. If there were guaranteed healthcare, then you wouldn’t be “forced” to stay at a job you do not want or take a job that you didn’t want just for healthcare. In other words, you would be more FREE.

So, buffoon_buffoon, why do you hate freedom?

  18. Roger_Roger says:

#15 Where do you get “85% success rate” from?

There are approximately 300 million people living in the U.S. Of those 300 million, approximately 250 million to 260 million are covered by an insurance plan. Let’s split the difference and figure 255 million people are covered. That leaves about 45 million people without insurance. Of this 45 million, the government estimates that almost 15 million qualify for some type of insurance program, but choose not to take part. That now leaves us with about 30 million people in the U.S. who want insurance, but do not have it. Translate that into percentages and you are looking at a system that has around a 90 percent “success” rate and a 10 percent “failure” rate. Heck, let’s figure all the numbers are off slightly and say that we have only an 85 percent coverage rate.

So, like I said before. We have at least an 85% success rate in healthcare. There is no way a government run program could top that.

  21. Roger_Roger says:

Do you on this site look at Universal Health care as FREE? Honestly, we will pay for it and we will pay alot. Our taxes would have to increase at least $6,000 to $10,000 for each American Household for the system to stand any chance of success. Are the Dems honestly ready to demand each American family pay the Federal government another $6,000 to $10,000 per year. Do you think we can afford that?

  22. Roger_Roger says:

#17 No, you still would have to make sure you had a new job before quitting your old one. A Universal health plan would require each American Household to pay at least $6,000 per year. You can’t quit your job on a whim and still have that kind of money. At least not us average Americans.

    http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/hlthins/hlthin05/hlth05asc.html

It shows that roughly 15% are uninsured in the USA, meaning 85% are insured. 85% SUCCESS RATE. How in the hell would a government control beuracracy do better? Honestly.

    RRooggeerr,

“The purpose of government,” as Thomas Jefferson said, “is to allow for the preservation of life and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

How can you exclude healthcare and include armed forces from this statement. How can you exclude the health of our nation while the Government builds our roads, dams, sends men to the moon, runs our schools, etc? While these are all admirable causes to exclude healthcare before all of these makes no sense when you look at the reason for government.

  31. Roger_Roger says:

Dr. Kevin Fleming of the Mayo Clinic did an analysis of the Canadian government-run health care plan and found that on average there is a 17-week wait for referrals to specialists, nearly 60 percent of the diagnostic equipment, i.e. C.A.T. Scans, MRI equipment, etc. is outdated and many of the high tech diagnostic equipment taken for granted in U.S. hospitals is not even available. He also found cases of 18-month waits for bypass surgery.

Yea, that is what I want in the USA!!!

  32. hellinabucket says:

r2, you are a dingleberry hanging from the anus of the Dick n Bush crowd. Get off your Healthcare rant. A soldier dies on his 2nd tour of duty in Iraq. 2nd tour for what?

His sacrifice is greater than any turd blossom sitting in congress but he had to die while these soul suckers don’t have to worry about their own healthcare, or social security or their retirement. That’s all been decided by them. But we can’t speak out against the inequity provided to the rest of the country.

You are more than an A$$hole, your the whole A$$

  33. Roger_Roger says:

#30 You think I disagree with you about Congress having better benefits then the rest of government employee’s? I think Congress should get the Same Health coverage that our soldiers get as well as Social Security. Once they leave Congress, they should lose there benefits.

You see, I am not looking to add more crap to government. I am all for reducing the benefits of congress to equal those of all other government employees. I also agree that they should lose all beneifts if or when they leave there job just like every other American. We live in a free market and that is how it should be.

  34. dlet says:

Are the Dems honestly ready to demand each American family pay the Federal government another $6,000 to $10,000 per year. Do you think we can afford that?
    Comment by Roger_Roger

    We already do.

The annual premium that a health insurer charges an employer for a health plan covering a family of four averaged $11,500 in 2006. Workers contributed nearly $3,000, or 10 percent more than they did in 2005 (3).The annual premiums for family coverage significantly eclipsed the gross earnings for a full-time, minimum-wage worker ($10,712).

  41. Yikes says:

Roger, this story is about a guy who couldn’t get enough coverage for his wife, so he re-enlisted. Subsequently he was killed. Universal health care is not necessarily the issue here. The issue is that the Government does not give health care for soldiers families when their tour is done. Anyone that serves should have lifetime health care for themselves and their families. That should be part of the “bonus” for serving in a voluntary army. Of course, the current government doesn’t give a damn about injured soldiers (see Walter Reed story) never mind their families.

As far as Universal Health Care costing as much as $6,000 per person versus having individuals pay for their own insurance goes, I don’t think you have all the facts to back up your assertion. Health Care does cost money, but letting people profit from it (HMO owners, drug companies and medical equipment distributors and manufacturers) and denying people care that can’t afford insurance is NOT the way the system should work.

  43. Roger_Roger says:

#32 Proving my point once again. Currently the average American family contributes only $3,000 dollars while employers pay an extra $8,500 per family. Why do you want to stop having employers pay and putting the entire $11,500 on each family.

Do you think we can afford an increase in health coverage of $8,500 over night. Unless you think the American public is cool with paying an extra $8,500 per year. I think we can’t afford that.

  44. Roger_Roger says:

The really scary thing from my link above is that the uninsured cost us roughly $100 billion. The 2007 pork earmarks the Dems are planning will exceed that amount. Why don’t they simply use that money for the uninsured and fix the problem overnight?

  45. Tuber says:

    #31,

Can I assume that you have petitioned your representative and senators to repeal all farm (tobacco) and energy (oil & coal) subsidies?

I mean, you CANNOT be for smaller government and a FREE MARKET and still support subsidies, it is economically impossible.

  46. Roger_Roger says:

#39 I am with you on your proposel. I like the idea of giving lifetime Health insurance to our soldiers. Congress is free to make a bill and vote on it anytime. Are you honestly going to blame this soldiers death on the Dem leadership for not adding this benefit? They have only been in power for a few months, back off a little. Either way, write your congressmen and ask for this benefit. I’ll back you on it. Hell, it will increase enlistment ten fold which we need anyways.

  47. Yikes says:

“The 2007 pork earmarks the Dems are planning will exceed that amount. ”

Conveniently ignoring the many years of repuke earmarking. What a tool you are.

  48. Roger_Roger says:

#44 I am completely against subsidies for any and all industries. Why would you think I support give aways to Oil, Coal, All Farmers, or any other group? That is a waste of tax payer money and is completely wrong. I haven’t written my congressmen in awhile but it is time. Will you join me in writing the Dem leadership to stop these horrible Handouts?

  49. Roger_Roger says:

#45 I am so sorry for “ignoring” them. The Repugs years of pork were a horrible waste of money and it was evil to do. The Dems and the Repugs each and every year stack bills full of pork while poor Americans go without health insurance. You in this crowd know to expect this from evil repugs, but how can you tolerate it now that the Dems are in Power? This year they have control. Why are they not taking the 100’s of billions they plan to use for pork and provide health coverage. Seems heartless on the Dem’s part if you ask me (It was heartless on the Repugs part as well).

  50. Tuber says:

    #44,

Ah yes, and next we’ll start starving people so that we can lure them into the “service” with promises of guaranteed food.

You sir, are an idiot. And, judging from your comments in support of the Iraq fiasco and the fact that you have not volunteered yourself for the cause, you are also a heinous coward. Fortunately for you, both are correctible situations. Good luck to you on that.

  51. hellinabucket says:

#44 How about we blame his death on the Republicans for starting this mess without proof, for lying to the american people and also for not providing the insurance to our service members when this all started.

That is where the blame lies doesn’t r2? It’s not just about healthcare as other have put above. It’s about the health of this country.

  52. Yikes says:

Wholly crap, my posts are coming up right away!!!!!

“Are you honestly going to blame this soldiers death on the Dem leadership for not adding this benefit?”

F*ck you! I never blamed anyone for his death you sh*t head. If there is blame to be made look no further than your fearful leader Bush.

(First time posting this got through only to be deleted. I’m trying again.)

  53. Yikes says:

“You in this crowd know to expect this from evil repugs, but how can you tolerate it now that the Dems are in Power? ”

Again Roger Dodger assumes I tolerate any pork.

goodbye Roger, I will never respond to you again!

  54. Roger_Roger says:

#48 I am retired Military and I served in Desert Storm. So, coward isn’t really the proper term here. Where did you serve sir?

#49 The attack on Iraq was wrong. I wouldn’t disagree. I think where you and me part ways however is the fact that you want to leave Iraq right now while I see that as not a good idea and would cost more American lives in the wrong run. We made this mess, which means we need to clean it up. At this point it would be immoral and unethical to leave Iraq how it is IMO.

  55. Tuber says:

    #47,

I already have and continue to do so. I would suggest you do the same if you truly are for smaller government and free market since the current level of subsidies (and ignored royalties) would cover the costs of even the most costly universal healthcare system proposal THREE times over.

Seems you have your priorities mixed up. Instead of complaining about and bashing on the sick and convalescent, you should be complaining and bashing on the insanely rich oil and tobacco tycoons who are stealing money from you.

I guess for you it is easier to attack the sick and infirm. Your parents must be proud.

  56. Roger_Roger says:

    $52 Yikes,

So you tolerate no pork, yet watch as your precious Dems spend like drunken sailors just like the Repugs did. How can you let that fly I wonder? Why don’t you stand up and demand they stop that nonsense and give the money to those without Health coverage. We are arguing about Health Insurace while our current Congress will spend more on pork then is needed to cover every single uninsured person in America. The Hypocrisy is amazing.

  62. Tuber says:

    #53,

Sorry pal, but I don’t believe you and your claims about military service. If you were “retired”, you can “un-retire” yourself and rejoin. No age limit on that and, short of physical incapacitation or disability, the military welcomes it with open arms. I know this for a fact.

Plus, no honorable former member of the military would stand idly by while their comrades were being sent into battle short handed and understaffed fighting for a cause that you believed in.

So, you are at minimum either a liar or a coward and at worst an imposter and a coward.

  63. Roger_Roger says:

#56 Obviously your just blowing off steam as you wouldn’t want to go down the road of I don’t want it so I ain’t paying. That would leave most every government program dead.

New Orleans was a mess and proved to me and the rest of America that relying on Government is a very bad idea. Government bueracracy’s are the very last place to put your hope in. Once again it makes me wonder why you want Government beuracracy style healthcare after seeing there management of New Orleans. New Orleans of course of compounded by horrible local government as well, but the Feds hold much of the blame. You know, there is till a mess down there that needs to be addressed. When are the Dems going to fix it? They harped about it endlessly on the campaign trail, yet now have the power to do something and do nothing.

And yes, we should take care of ourselves before others, which is obvious.

The lesson for the sane and reasonable regarding New Orleans/Katrina is: Having an un-reliable government is an extremely bad idea.

    Dude, you are a dolt.

  66. hellinabucket says:

Yeah that Tennessee Valley Authority was a monumental disaster. Does the readiness of the National Guard and Reserves fall into your idea of “we should take care of ourselves”? The gulf coast is hit by a Hurricane not seen since the Galveston and we should just let them take care of themselves.

Who said “A true measure of a countries greatness is on how it takes care of it’s poorest citizens” I may be paraphrasing but I believe it will be understood.

The National Guard was stripped of most of it’s equipment and vehicles and was underequipped when the hurricane struck. The city was overwhelmed. Local Govt failed, as did the State Govt. It is the job of the Federal Govt. to take charge. And they didn’t. I hold them all responsible but when the smaller portions of our govt are overwhelmed then it is the responsibility of the Federal Govt to take charge.

You have already turned your back on the citizens of the gulf. But you are wrong sir. Very wrong.

Yep, make them have babies and don’t give them insurance or a higher minimum wage. That will give us more soldiers to play with.

I love how this crowd spends so much time pointing how all the failures of government, but yet is so fast to simply say “you’re wrong” when I point out that asking government to add another program to it’s bueracracy is very risky.

Government at best does a half ass job and mostly just fails. THis website proves it over and over. Why then would anyone with a sane mind want the government to take over Healthcare? We are taking about something that currently has an 85% success rate. We are talking about a program that ensures almost every American already. How the hell would anyone think that government could compete and do better then that?

The 10%-15% that our current system fails requires roughly $100 billion dollars of tax payer money for care. This is an amount that is LESS THEN the amount your Dems will spend on pork earmarks in 2007.

To sum up, we are talking about a program that currently serves 85% of the population with success. The few that don’t get health insurance only require $100 billion to support which is less then the pork earmarks the Dems will use in 2007. Why the hell do we want to throw out this great system that is working really well again? Seems like we should keep the current system, stop the pork, and give that money over to help the uninsured. Doing those simple steps would garuntee health coverage for every single American and we wouldn’t have to raise taxes or make any major changes. WHY IS THAT NOT THE BEST IDEA?!?!?! Please, someone let me know.

We, the undersigned, vehemently oppose any U.S. military action against Iran. Such military action would inevitably kill large numbers of innocent people, foster even more hatred and international condemnation of the U.S., and dramatically increase the instability of the region. Our own intelligence agencies have concluded the Iraq war has worsened the terrorist threat, and a war against Iran would add immeasurably more fuel to the fire.

Even if Iran decided to build a nuclear weapon, experts agree that it would take several years. There is no crisis, and our government should not create one with inflammatory rhetoric or military threats. The U.S. has both the time and obligation to work with the international community to fashion a diplomatic resolution to the situation, and the current refusal of U.S. officials to talk directly with Iranian officials cannot possibly help resolve the nuclear standoff, nor contribute to peace in Iraq and the Middle East.

Therefore, we urge you to take all steps necessary to reach a peaceful resolution to the current situation, including direct negotiations without pre-conditions. This is the only way to prevent yet another war, one that would be a calamity of truly global proportions.

    No War with Iran!
President Bush is now regularly accusing Iran of supporting attacks on U.S. troops, without any evidence, – remember the WMD’s in Iraq, anyone? – adding that “we will seek out and destroy” these networks. Bush has authorized U.S. forces to kill Iranian “operatives” in Iraq, and he is sending nuclear aircraft carriers and missile defense batteries to the Persian Gulf. The unthinkable – a wider war in the Middle East – is unfolding.

John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that any U.S. military move into Iran would be “catastrophically stupid” and “unleash a conflagration like we’ve never heard of before.” We could not possibly agree more.

Resistance to a Bush planned military strike on Iran is growing in Congress, but it needs your help! Sign the petition to Congress below – No War with Iran! House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said recently that she would introduce legislation to stop such a strike, so our demand is beginning to get through. But the pressure needs to be much, much stronger to stop a President who has apparently gone mad with war and his own power.

Please know that your email address is for internal purposes only; we will not send it to the petition recipients nor share it with any other organization for any purpose. Thanks also for forwarding this to your friends, colleagues and listserves. We need everyone who wants to bring peace to the Middle East and prevent a war with Iran to join the effort now!

This was excrutiatingly horrid to read! It is a crime against humanity that a young man has to enlist in his country’s military and be ordered to serve in an illegal war JUST so that his wife can get medical attention. That is unbelievable. THIS IS NOT THE COUNTRY I WAS RAISED IN.
THAT country would not have permitted this atrocity.
I don’t think I’ve posted here before. I post regularly on HuffPo. Looks like some good folks on here.
(Too bad about Roger, though. hmmmmm.)

It just should not have happened.
    Warriors have to be warriors.
Health care must be accessable for everybody. Regardless. All Europe has a very good health care system. I can not imagine French or English go to the Army to get the health care for his wife. Back to the cavemen era.
America is on the 13th place among devloped countries – considering the way country is caring for its citizens.
America is #1 country considering Army size.
This war shall be a reason for our country to review some moral values and the way we are going to the future.

    Roger Roger: you’re a moron.

My brother is over there, HOW DARE YOU insult a family member of a soldier by saying that I (and any other person here) am saying otherwise about this poor young man?

I feel nauseated. Absolutely nauseated. People know this sort of stuff is happening, but no one is doing anything to stop it.

  80. common sense says:

For the likes of Roger roger:

Why don’t you spend some of that money you spent in Iraq on social services?

Why is tax such a dirty word in America?

Why is it such a priority that companies must make ginormous profits and the rest of the country can go to hell? Are you uninterested in the welfare of your fellow citizens?

Is it so difficult to understand that many publicly underwritten costs (education, roads, health care, environment, defense etc) make it possible for businesses to operate and make profits in the US? And that corporate and direct/indirect taxes can and should be used to improve everyone’s lives?

Have you looked at your country lately? Much of it is no different from the third world!

You’re so brainwashed by the military-industrial complex and rich-people propoganda that you don’t understand the concept of social justice.

It’s plain selfishness. Examine your heart and you will find a core of hard-edged selfishness trying to pass off as common sense.

  81. Roger_Roger says:

#80 We can certainly take away profit from business, hell can the whole free market. The downside is that we get no advancements or efficiencies, we don’t advance at all in medicine, and our education systems goes downword. You see, without the profit motive, companies and individuals don’t try or work because it would be pointless. I would contend that our Free Market is what made this country the richest country in the world. You have obviously not traveled much in the 3rd world or your standard for “poor” would change. I have been through China, and much of Africa. The “poor” in those countries are nothing like the “poor” in America. Our “poor” still get health care, have TV’s, Cars, etc. The poor in Africa starve to death. Big difference.

As far as spending the Iraq money on Social Services. This isn’t a bad idea, yet how would we fund the war in Iraq then? Do you simply want to leave that country after all the horrible things we did to it? Don’t we have the obligation to clean up the mess we made? IN the the, the $500 billion or more we spent there wouldn’t even dent the horrible debt we have in our Social Programs.

  82. Charlotte says:

As a long time friend of the deceased, all of the comments posted on this website are really upsetting. The soldier did not die trying to provide healthcare for his family, he died doing what he loved-fighting for his country. That is why he re-enlisted in the military, benefits didn’t even cross his mind- he loved his job(as a soldier),family, and friends. You should all be ashamed to even post comments such as those.
