Coulter: I Would Talk About Edwards But “You Have To Go Into Rehab If You Use The Word ‘Faggot’”

Speaking today at the Conservative Political Action Conference, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter said: “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.” Audience members said “ohhh” and then cheered.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/03/edwcoul.320.240.flv]

UPDATE: Former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA), prior to Coulter’s appearance: “I am happy to hear that after you hear from me, you will hear from Ann Coulter. That is a good thing. Oh yeah!”

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/03/romann.320.240.flv]

UPDATE II: Previously, Coulter has put “even money” on Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) “[c]oming out of the closet,” said Bill Clinton shows “some level of latent homosexuality,” and called Vice President Al Gore a “total fag.”

UPDATE III: The Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese issues the following statement:

“We demand that every single Presidential candidate in attendance at this conference, along with Vice President Cheney stand up and publicly condemn this type of gutter-style politics,” continued Solmonese. “If not, then their silence will be deafening to the vast majority of Americans who believe this type of language belongs no where near the discussions about the future of our country.”

UPDATE IV: SadlyNo has more reaction to Coulter’s remarks, and Media Matters recommends questions the media should be asking.

That was an odd comment. Edward's probably wouldn't hear it anyways. You see, there are 2 America's. One for all of us nobody's and one for people like Edwards:

Impossible - to be embarrassed would mean that they actually had emotions. These sociopaths don't care about anything.

Oh, I'm sure she will claim that she was joking - just look at that smug little smirk. But to display humor, one must know humility. Good luck with that.

  14. Jackie Rawlings Says:

Now is Ann jealous because she doesn't have a man? John Edwards is wonderful to the eye and Elizabeth is a lucky lady. Now Ann has herself and even dogs like Matthews and O'Reilly aren't interested in her. Maybe if she put her hair in pig tales and covered her face Rush might think she's a kid as he does rape little girls as long as he has his Viagra.

  20. AshenShard Says:

Is it me or is becoming habit for her? Call someone gay when she cannot find anything constructive to criticize in a politician on the left? If I remember correctly, she called Al Gore gay. Unless she has not yet graduated from high school, there is no excuse for immature comments like this.

  21. fredsanford Says:

She's here in my neck of the woods this weekend for the Reclaiming America for Christ conference at D. James Kennedy's Coral Ridge Presbyterian church, in Ft. Lauderdale. Someone should put the word out to local gay bars to watch for her and the "conservative" cultists/tourists who pop in to "keep tabs" on the gay conspiracy.

  22. steve_e Says:

I know this kind of thing sells to Limbaugh fans, but my kinder conservative relatives are blown away when I show them what the leading lights of the conservative movement are saying. They don't believe it at first. After all, the media pats them on the head and tells them how wonderful and godly and sweet they are. Reality has a way of destroying their delicate self-image. Ann Coulter is causing some conservatives to leave the movement. Keep it up.

They have emotions, that is what they base their decisions on. What Coulter and her ilk lack is a soul.

  28. Bush War of Terror for Make Benefit the Glorious Nation of Iraq Says:

Nice to know what passes for legitimate dialogue in a Conservative Political Action Conference.

What I've never understood about Ann Counter is how such a person can continue to get away with pretending to be a 'political analyst'. Her entire career IS ad-hominem attacks, it's her only function in this life, and she doesn't even do it well! She has never done any analysis of any political issues, never! Unless of course you consider name-calling and bomb throwing 'analysis'.

Obviously it pays well to be a mediocre hack nowadays.

    Only in America!

  29. Exley Says:

    An "embarrassing moment for conservatives."

    Agreed.

  30. Max Booty Says:

Gad, Le Skank grows ever more hideous, like the Picture of Dorian Gray. It's enough to turn any hetero guy gay. Inner ugliness will out.

  31. AZ_Squeegee Says:

That there are any homosexual conservatives in this country at all is one of those perverse little ironies I will never understand. THEY HATE YOU! You support them why?

Guess Ann has all of their self-esteem.

  32. Tom3 Says:

Last time I checked, Edwards was happily married.

Mann Coulter is single. And her Adam's Apple is bulging in that photo.

    So who's the faggot?

  33. JW Says:

Ann Coulter is the personification of everything the GOP stands for. The democratic party should remind people of that fact every time she opens her mouth.

  34. steve o Says:

  35. Tom3 Says:

Its entertaining the way Mann Coulter's Adams Apple bobs up and down when she calls straight Democrats "faggot".

    According to Mann Coulter:

    Bill Clinton - "gay"
    Al Gore - "total fag"
    John Edwards - "faggot"

Somebody ask her what she thinks of Ken Mehlman and Jeff Gannon.

Between Coulter's comments and reading about Edwards' new crib, one assumes that either:

    (a) Elizabeth Edwards (along with Catharine, Emma Claire, Jack and the late Wade) are all beards for John's real self; or

    (b) Coulter is a loon

I think (b) is the favorite to win there.

Well, she's usually in our neck of the woods ... I work in Boca Raton, and she lives in Palm Beach County (as do I). (Of course, she doesn't really seem to be sure where she lives.) I even have memorialized that fact in the intro to my blog.

She's an embarrassment and does not belong in polite society, let alone punditry and the media.

AZ, there are an estimated 1 million Log Cabin Repukes in the US. Well there were before the 2004 election, when Karl Rove dumped them to go after the Religious Reich.

Karl Rove dumping his fellow Republiqueers, that's ironic.

Anyway, they are self-hating closet cases who with great reluctance actually decided not to vote for Chimpy in 2004.

I don't know if the Log Cabin Republiqueers like Mann Coulter.

    And your point is?

Prairie Chapel Ranch is a 1583 acre (6.4 km2) estate located seven miles outside Crawford, Texas. It is the home of President George W. Bush. Then-Governor Bush bought the land in 1999 shortly after earning a $14.3-million profit from the sale of the Texas Rangers. Based on fair-market land prices at the time the deal was closed for an estimated $1.3 million.

If there are two worlds, Bush lives in a third dimension where wrong is right and everything smells like death.

Anne needs to start making better use of her time, I heard they're looking for new leads for the broadway run of "Annie, Get Your Gun".

Have you all seen her myspace profile:

    http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=125346386

For someone who doesn't care about homosexuals, she seems extremely preoccupied with them in her public drivel.

  46. Tom3 Says:

Mann Coulter is just engaging in "projection", a Rovian propaganda trick.

She is projecting her own sexuality onto Democratic politicians. She is a closet tranny with a huge Adam's Apple, huge hands and huge feet.

I "read" her as a tranny the very first time I saw a photo of her. It is that obvious. And trannies ARE faggots, they're gayer than gay.

    So who's the faggot now?

  47. chimpeach Says:

Remember the bit that Letterman did after she said Clinton was gay? Time to drag that out again:

  48. candideinnc Says:

As a gay man, I feel physically hurt when I hear things like this. That is because there is so little outrage for the behavior of the beasts like Coulter. 52. Matthew Says:

It's wishful thinking on her part. If Edwards were gay, she could probably reveal to him that she's a post op transsexual without suffering reprisals.

It's got to be a terrible burden to carry around a "secret" like that while holding such extreme Conservative Views. The self loathing he/she must feel boggles the mind.

  57. AshenShard Says:

    #35 chimpeach

thanks, I almost forgot she called Bill Clinton gay also, though I don't know why since, especially among conservative circles, Clinton's indiscretions with other women are quite well known.

Building on my previous comments, I seriously think she has the mental capacity of a high schooler. She has not been able to grow out of that childish tendency towards name calling when she cannot make a point against people she absolutely loathes.

btw, what happened to her little problem with voting in the wrong location? is that still going through, or did they just drop the voting fraud charges?

  58. Tom3 Says:

    Comment by candideinnc — March 2, 2007 @ 4:42 pm

As a gay men living in NYC, I know what you mean. Although in New York, when something such as this happens there typically is more outrage. The problem most people don't realize is the actual effects Ann and the Bush administration has on society. It is fact that hate crimes against homosexuals have more than doubled since the Bush administration took office, and sometimes tripling after speeches in which Bush addressses the "Constitutional Amendment to Ban Gay Marriage".

What the media does not report are the numerous deaths and beatings in hate crimes against homosexuals, with dozens happening weekly. Andrew Anthos was a 72 year old African American senior citizen who was followed of the bus in Detroit and beaten to death with a lead pipe outside his home on Feb 13th because someone on the bus asked if he was gay. On Tuesday a man was followed from the PATH train from Manhattan to Hoboken, NJ and beaten by two men because he was wearing pink pants (they caught one 19 year old assailant). Dozens of hate crimes against homosexuals happen weekly but do not get reported in the main stream media, because after all they're only "fa**ots".

If Ann Coulter used the word "n****r" she would face a media storm, but using the word "f****t" sells her more books and gets her applause. Great country America.

Pardon, just had to laugh at that joke. "Intelligent discourse from neo-con Republicans"! Ha! They’re the original authors of "partisan politics" and "politics of personal destruction". Rather than stand on their achievements (fiscal insanity, culture of corruption, irresponsibility) they'd rather tear everyone else down.

To a neo-con, the only way to win is to destroy their opponent. Neo-cons have no honor and the morals of prostitutes. They'd sell their own mothers if it would get them a buck and a vote.

  100. Raven Says:

    Dear Ann
The slang term 'rehab' is derived from the root word rehabilitation, which is a process, dearie, not simply a place with a warm tub and walls done in pastel colors.
Going into rehab(ilitation) also implies there is something worth rehabilitating, or salvaging, if you will.
Given your particular prognosis, my suggestion would be taking your hair dryer into the tub with you.

  102. tristan Says:

She always makes some kind of outrageous remark when she has a book coming out, must be time. But I think there's the law of diminishing returns working against her. As soon as a book doesn't make #1 on the best seller list she's finished, over, seen as a failure. It's going to happen and then we won't ever have to hear her pathetic attempts to rouse the repubs from their torpor. We can't take this too seriously. There's nothing alarming about being insulted by Ann Coulter any more. She's a national joke. However someone has to ask Romney if he agrees with her.

    A Black Gay Howard Beach?
    By Keith Boykin, in sexuality
    Tuesday, October 10 2006, 11:37AM

They're already comparing it to Howard Beach, the notorious hate crime in which a black man was chased by a group of white men into traffic and killed by a passing car in Howard Beach, New York. In 1986, 23-year-old Michael Griffith was hit by a car after being beaten by a group of white men who chased him through the streets. In this case, another black man, 28-year-old Michael Sandy, was hit by a car on the same roadway after being attacked and chased by at least two white men. The difference is that this time the victim may also be gay.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the men fought with the victim in an area near a parking lot alongside Plumb Beach, near Sheepshead Bay, and then forced him into a roaring lane of traffic at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, the New York Times reported. Backing away from the men, Sandy was struck by a car and then dragged from oncoming traffic by one of the men, the Times continued. The incident took place near a known gay cruising spot.

Although the New York Daily News identified Sandy as a black gay man who was an interior designer for Ikea, Clarence Patton, the director of the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti Violence Project said "we just don't know yet" that the attack was gay-related. Some reports indicate that the attack may have been racially motivated and not sexual orientation-related. In a telephone interview this morning, Patton said, "The best we can all do is to wait for him to recover and see if he can remember anything."

"A lot of times the police and the media want to look at things as it was this or it was that, and not look at the fact that, particularly if you have a group of white racist homophobes, they could do stuff for both reasons, and we just don't know that yet."

"Everybody on the investigative team is out in the area right now, which is encouraging," Patton said. "The fact that this is so reminiscent of the Howard Beach incident has everyone on the edge." he said. He also indicated that there was another Howard Beach incident just last year. Because of the history of previous attacks, Patton said the area in which the attack occurred is a "tinderbox."

Patton said his group would monitor the case and be involved in it regardless of whether it turns out to be a racial bias case or a sexual orientation bias case. These things happen in all communities and the people who do these things don't limit themselves, Patton said. He also added that if the victim does in fact turn out to be gay that his group would want to be involved no matter what the motivation of the attack.

    Comment by Mark — March 2, 2007 @ 6:12 pm

The difference Mark is that our speech is inciting hate crimes against HOMOSEXUALS.

    AGAIN
The problem most people don’t realize is the actual effects Ann and the Bush administration has on society. It is fact that hate crimes against homosexuals have more than doubled since the Bush administration took office, and sometimes tripling after speeches in which Bush addressses the “Constitutional Amendment to Ban Gay Marriage”.

Dozens of hate crimes against homosexuals happen weekly but do not get reported in the main stream media, because after all they’re only “fa**ots”.

If Ann Coulter used the word “n****r” she would face a media storm, but using the word “f****t” sells her more books and gets her applause. Great country America.

  193. Shane Says:

Coulter's big on calling people gay but isn't she the one without a significant other - ever. Guess you could call Coulter a non-practicing homo-hetero sexual - then you don't besmirch either gender.

    And yet you didn't Mark.

  202. Shane Says:

Coulter could turn any man gay - she probably smiled at Edwards, Gore and Clinton and they all said sorry "I'm Gay!" Who wouldn't.
The fundamentalist Christians should encourage her to go into gay bars - that would scare a lot of lesbians straight!

  203. ThunderHawk Says:

    Mark,

"Previously, Coulter has put “even money” on Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) “[c]oming out of the closet,” said Bill Clinton shows “some level of latent homosexuality,” and called Vice President Al Gore a “total fag.”

I wonder if Man Coulter has ever thought about the term "projection". I think that her constantly calling other people fags, gay, etc. may speak volumes about her/his? sexuality. Think about it. Does s/he have a boyfriend, has s/he ever been married?

    Comment by Mark — March 2, 2007 @ 6:12 pm

By the way Mark, I'd be careful about calling someone else an idiot - what exactly is a 'ONE every person' anyway? I'm waiting for you to name the first 5, but now I'm not sure how many you're talking about.

  210. Tuber Says:

And here we have Mark, Roger_Roger, and Patrick1 preaching hate and wondering why they can not get dates.

Let your self be what you want to be, girls, and the hate will melt away. As an added bonus, you will each have two new batchelorettes to chase after. (My bet is that Roger_Roger and Patrick1 will hook up since poor wittle Mark hasn't reached puberty yet)

  211. Laura Says:

It's comments like hers and the reaction to it from the attendees that reinforce my belief that Republicans are truly ugly people. Exactly what was she attempting to imply?

  212. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Isn't Ann really Andrew Coulter.

Her adam's apple is big even for a man. What's up with that?

    Enquiring minds want to know.

One could have added Michael Weiner, Neil Bortz and Michael Reagan. Then, there's the horrifying Melenie Morgan, who likes to call Obama a "hafrican."

  224. Justice Says:

So why all the anti-transgendered remarks by all you purported liberals who purport to give a damn about queers? Coulter's remarks are unremarkable for their consistent ugliness, but all this trashing of her appearance and questioning of her gender are only part of the same stupid hate she displays so brilliantly. 228. ChildrenofLir Says:

If I were there I would have asked her if she's a man.

  230. Shane Says:

Ann Coulter isn't fit to wipe John Edward's butt. But the fact that she so fixated on him must give him the creeps.
Ann Coulter doesn't "sell" books. Her neocon cronies make them required reading at colleges and universities and have them stocked in the libraries.
She couldn't sell herself in a prison, men's or women's.

  231. ChildrenofLir Says:

    #222

It’s so sad that there that many people in this world who are so lacking in a soul.

Why do you think we ended up in Iraq? THere's millions in the US who lack a soul. And the king of soullessness sits in the White House.

  232. Pukey RePuke Says:

Do you have to go into rehab if you use the word "filthy cunt"?

  233. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Kurt
You have got to be kidding about the Mormon church. They tolerate polygamy and throwing 13 year old boys out on their ears to fend for themselves, and tolerate forcing women to leave their husbands and live with another man.

The Mormon Church is a disgusting travesty.

  234. Bluedog49 Says:

Hey Justice, talk is talk. Public policy is more important. I'm going to guess none of the liberals here are in favor of depriving people of their constitutional rights because of sexual orientation. It's strictly on the basis of her words and positions that makes me feel Coulter is a very disgusting person. I have to admit, though, looking at that picture, she does have quite an adam's apple.

    Dem Soldier,
You may be insulting prostitutes. You're undoubtedly familiar with the expression "honor among thieves," and there may be a similar "honor among prostitutes." But honor or morals among neo-CONs, I think not.

  238. Bluedog49 Says:

Kate, Ann Coulter and the people applauding her ugly remarks are sociopaths. That's our problem.

  239. Bluedog49 Says:

It's like the log cabin gays who tolerate and actively create anti-gay policies. Ann is a transvestite or trans gender who hides in the closet while spewing hatred of her own kind. There's no fault in forcing her out of the closet.

  241. ChildrenofLir Says:

I should say - Ann looks like, or could be, a trans gender or a transvestite. Enquiring minds would like to know for sure.

  247. snozberry Says:

I'm surprised that this is the comment thread of the supposed good guys. "Ann Coulter called John Edwards a faggot...heh heh SHE'S the faggot/tranny/dyke!" It's encouraging to see that the progressive movement can be counted on as such dynamic advocates of gay rights. Thanks guys.

  248. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Bluedog49
I didn't know that - it makes sense - self-loathing leads to lack of empathy for self and others.

  249. Bill Says:

This is astoundingly disreputable, beyond-belief offensive behavior. Any company or organization that supports her should be stridently boycotted.

Also: Barnes & Noble or Borders wouldn't carry a book by Fred Phelps. Is OK for them to be stocking Ann Coulter? I don't mean legally, I mean in a moral/ethical sense.

  250. Tyler Says:

When will this stupid b*tch go away?! I'd say she is just a shock jock looking for publicity but that would be an insult to shock jocks. She just says dumb sh*t to get attention. She never actually says anything intelligent, that might require her to research a subject!, just idiot remarks.

Does she think the gay remarks are funny? I know gay bashing hysterical to republicans but this kind of humor stopped being funny to most people in middle school.

  251. jamaica Says:

Who CARES what female impersonator Ann Coulter has to say?
Only idiots who buy her book.

Its not hard to say outrageous things - especially when that's all she's got.

Sort of interesting that Mitt Romney didn't distance himself from this kind of talk. They've got nothing going, they've done nothing but screw up the country -- so they're going to shoot their wad & hope something sticks.

  252. ChildrenofLir Says:

Don't ya think she wants to get caught in her gender deception? Why else prominently display her adam's apple. She wants to be found out. SHe's begging to be caught. Bill O'Reilly and the rest of those wonks find her attractive, which is amusing especially when viewed in the transgender light.

  253. Cory Says:

I guess that is the only complaint the Reich wing can have in the face of a failed administration. As a gay man, I think I'm entitled to say what I can about Ann Coulter, after all I'm not in the press or writing books and my words are only shared privately online between people who can understand where my anger comes from.

  254. ChildrenofLir Says:

    snozberry
Good Guys? You don't get around much. There aren't any good guys left. Bush saw to that. We're all fighting for our lives down here in hell.

  255. Bluedog49 Says:

snozberry, evidently you prefer people who make gay jokes, but favor public policy which deprives people of rights based on sexual orientation to people who make gay jokes but want everyone to have the same rights regardless of sexual orientation. Strange.

  257. Bluedog49 Says:

It really is strange. Conservatives can stare off into space while their party deprives gay people of their rights, but let a few liberals engage in some gay joking and they're simply shocked. Shocked! Get serious Bush cultists. Nobody around here is buying your act.

  258. Jonathan Says:

Homophobia is not the fear of gays. It is the fear of being gay.
Seems this women has an issue that needs addressing. Maybe that's why she's so "hard" looking. She's denying
herself her true nature. I would call her a cunt, but that
would give cunts a bad name.

  259. Darwin Says:

Wow, that is so wierd. We were going to discuss Coulter the other day, but it turns out "Gum-Cuzzling Runtcag" isn't politically correct.

  260. ChildrenofLir Says:

I'm not making gay jokes. Pointing out that Coulter may be trans gender or a transvestite is not making a joke. Well I guess saying that enquiring minds want to know is sort of a joke. The joke is about how she is hiding and hating.

But besides all that - people who are trans gender are not necessarily homosexual. It's more complicated than that.

SO just pointing out that someone may be transgender is not saying they may be gay necessarily.

Maybe someone here could enlighten us more on the distinctions.

  261. gabe Says:

  263. Dale Says:

#251, Blue, what Ann said is ridiculous and un-called for. (And I've said so on other sites).

But, uh, how is that any different from the immense disrespect that's shown on this site?

  264. Cory Says:

Ann has forgotten that it was the Woman's LIBERATION MOVEMENT that battled for the rights she so liberally uses in her public speeches and publications.

A female right wing conservative. What's next, a lesbian handicap African-American conservative Republican?

  265. ChildrenofLir Says:

Ever notice the young conservative college women in her typical audience. They adore her, hang on her every word. They ask her fawning questions, and she mumbles and bumbles about, backtracks, says the opposite, tosses her hair, and they swoon.

She's a classic male hiding in women's clothing and the young girls feel so safe adoring her. There's something highly neurotic about the whole thing.

Disrespect? Come on. The nature of Ann Coulter is disrespect. Come on lighten up. She invites this kind of discussion.

Think of it as a therapy session for Ann. Maybe she'll read this and learn something about herself. Or she'll jerk herself off to it.
    Ooohh. Not a good picture.

  271. kelso Says:

    257. Dale, gimmie a break. You're talking about people leaders of our nation as welll as individuals whom are CONSTANTLY in the public eye vs. a handful of anonymous posters on a blog.

The point I'm making is that throughout this entire thread, gay and genderqueer people have been the butt of the joke as much as Ann Coulter has. I would have liked to count on progressives to avoid pulling out tired old "trannies are funny" lines, but this has shown that not to be the case and that is disappointing. Yes, Ann Coulter is a hateful walking publicity stunt, but does the first place we go with that really have to be "look at mAnn's adam's apple"? I don't think it does, and in saying "we're just joking," we're as bad as she is.

  277. Bluedog49 Says:

Dale: "But, uh, how is that any different from the immense disrespect that’s shown on this site?"

Good question, Dale. I think the only difference is that liberals are speaking to power and people like Coulter are speaking for power. Other than that, this just shows that liberals can give as well as they get.

Your problem is you're a snob. Manny Coulter is the face of America. She's the false front, the nasty-edged blond, the frivolous sociopath.

The first step to freedom from these sociopaths is stating the truth about them. She's hiding and people don't know it. How else do you unmask the pretender?

  286. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Dale
Well to your point then about disrespect.

Perhaps she knows something about Edwards that we don't know.

Perhaps she's outing someone, just as we are trying to do.

This is about outing people, not hating them.

It's a fine distinction, but get off your high horse. How else are people going to discuss these things.

  287. snozberry Says:

Good point, Children. I'm done with this. The abject, hypocritical venom spewed here is the reason I don't generally engage with the "netroots." And that probably does in fact make me a snob. How many liberals now has she called or referred to as "gay." Hillary Clinton, Al Gore (come on now), John Edwards, and who knows. Disagree with one's political viewpoints and call them a "faggot." Is this really the level of discourse that we as a country ought to be having? I think of Ann Coulter what I think of Paris Hilton - ignore them, pay no attention to their conduct or their statements, and bid away any kind of celebrity or media attention from them - and maybe they'll just fade away. And why did she use the term 'faggot' when referring to Edwards. To get applause. She had just finished confusedly alluding to libel and slander laws in the US versus Europe, and then she made the potentially slanderous statement about Edwards.

She was risking a slander charge, which of course he would never do. She's playing the slander card obviously.

UPDATE III: The Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese issues the following statement: “We demand that every single Presidential candidate in attendance at this conference, along with Vice President Cheney stand up and publicly condemn this type of gutter-style politics,” continued Solmonese. “If not, then their silence will be deafening to the vast majority of Americans who believe this type of language belongs no where near the discussions about the future of our country.”

We need to see more of this.

  300. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus Says:

snozberry, the term tranny is in reference to her hypocrisy, not as an insult to trannies.

  301. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Colin
It's wishful thinking to think she will go away if we ignore her. Witness what has happened in this country since 9-11. Everyone ignored Wilson's statements that the WMD intelligence was false. Everyone thought Bush would stop, would not do what he's done. Everyone thinks that Bush won't do the unthinkable and bomb Iran.

But they don't go away. They jsut get more outrageous the more we find them so distasteful and beneath our higher sensibilities. They are the evil seed that infects the heart of America. It's our duty to point them out.

  302. ChildrenofLir Says:

Who is using tranny as a slur. I used it but not as a slur. It's a fact that people are trans gender, or transvestites. You are confused about this.
Some people really are trans genders or transvestites, and they are proud of that. I think you have a misunderstanding of this. Maybe not but it seems so

  305. Chris Says:

It's funny that a lot of the posts here talk about how conservatives are so heartless and terrible and just use ad hominem attacks. But then you silly people turn around and say "dude looks like a lady." and "man, that ann coulter guy sure is ugly."

    Stupid! You're so stupid!

  307. ChildrenofLir Says:

You're stupid too. No wonder you post here.

  308. Danielle Says:

The comments about Ann Coulter and transsexualism reveal some so-called liberals to be as bigoted, mean spirited and ignorant as she is.

  309. Timcol Says:

I guess it would be tempting to find an epithet to respond to Coulter's ugly outburst. But that would not be helpful.

Let's just remind ourselves instead of who Ann Coulter really is - an opportunist sensationalist who may be able to seize the moment with her startling outbursts - but ultimately that's all she will be remembered for. She is not a visionary, she is not a uniter, she is not a leaderleader, she does not bring hope, and ultimately she is really devoid of any compelling ideas let alone any solutions that will further this country.

If she is remembered by history at all, if will be for her senastionalist style and shrillness and not for the substance of what she has to say. She is to journalism what Jerry Springer is to the art of discourse and interviewing. Her books are destined for the remainder pile, not the Pulitzer prize candidate list.

  310. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Danielle
There's nothing wrong with being trans gender. Many people are trans gender. THey are not bad people. IT is not a sin. There is nothing wrong with it.

What's WRONG IS HIDING THE FACT THAT ONE IS TRANS GENDER AND PRETENDING TO BE SOMETHING ELSE, ALL THE WHILE CALLING OTHER PEOPLE NAMES LIKE FAGGOT

    THAT'S WHAT IS WRONG

Is this such a difficult concept to grasp?

  311. jay severin has a small pen1s Says:

I think that lady is a dude. Somebody check under the skirt.

  312. ChildrenofLir Says:

Trans gender is not a slur. Trans gender is a condition, just like femininity or masulinity.

I detect a definite ignorance about trans genderism, especially on the part of people here who are offended by the mention of the word.

  313. Mary Says:

    Snozberry, I'm with you!

The term 'tranny' is ALWAYS a slur, and NEVER an appropriate term for a trans person, even if Ann is trans. You all say you're not hateful and yet you wish for her to be outed, for "someone to wrestle this dude to the ground, pull up his skirt and prove to the world what he really is! Shut he/she up for good. Bury him/her for good." That is extremely hateful and no one, NOT EVEN Ann Coulter, deserves that!

Think of how you would feel if you were a transgendered person reading this. You should be ashamed.

  314. PC Says:

I really hate to use four letter words in response to anything, but in this case I think an exception is called for, SCUM is an appropriate word and also one that the cons won't go ballistic over hearing, especially since it is so apropos here.

  315. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Mary
I wouldn't be ashamed if I were trans gender and reading this. I would be glad. YOU are the one who's ashamed. YOu don't like the term trans gender. You don't like the concept, or the idea. You think it's dirty, or should be hidden.

  316. Max Says:

I wonder if Coulter calls her buddy Drudge a "faggot".

  317. ChildrenofLir Says:

Maybe Drudge is her lover and she has another name for him.

    Why People Hate Politics...

I try to stick to local issues in this space but I can't stay silent on this....

  323. ChildrenofLir Says:

Instead of blogger ethics, lets conference about why the Demcrats can't stand up against the war and get the troops home as they were empowered to do in the last election. Let's have a conference about that. Screw this crap about how it's so awful to call Coulter names. Please. There are no words to describe her that do her justice.

But there are words that should be said about the Dem elites who are sitting on any proposal in Congress that actually DOES SOMETHING to bring the troops home and to stop this madness.

  324. BunBun vonWhiskers Says:

    Faggot.

Wow. It is juvenile, inaccurate, and lacks punch if you find nothing wrong with homosexuality. It was said purely to offend, and she can hardy come out and say she just blurted it out because of the construction of her statements. But that is not what strikes me.

If you watch the clip, it is obvious that she put some thought into it before she came in front of an audience. The little hampsters in her head furiously ran inside their little treadmills. The treadmills turned little squeakly gears that have obviously not turned for a while. Cogs meshed, smoke leaked out of poorly oiled axles, and the full might of her stupendous intellent was put to the task. And out popped...

    Faggot.

This is a famous conservative humorist? This is a person who has sold millions of books? A person who when given an opportunity to prepare remarks and snarky putdowns before a public appearance, comes up with kindergarden level BS?

It's not like Al Gore is a difficult target for humorous barbs. Even if you want to resort to mere name-calling, you can do better than this.

    Faggot.

Feh. Maybe that sort of thing is good enough for toddlers and the Republican base, but she is going to have to do better than that to get me really riled up...

  325. Zooey Says:

While we're at it, let's have a conference on why this Coulter thread gets more attention than the other threads about things that actually matter -- Veterans, slimey politicians, Walter Reed Hospital.....

    Just sayin'

  326. neil Says:

    wait...Edwards isn't gay?

  327. ChildrenofLir Says:

Let's have a thread that talks about the failure of the Dems to do what they were told to do by the American people in the last election - to bring the troops home. Let's have a freakin thread about that. In the meantime, I'll make fun of Coulter because IT'S FUN!!!!

  328. Willy Says:

It's interesting how Coulter projects her homosexuality.

  329. Mary Says:

    ChildrenofLir,

I don't like transgendered people? Why, because I think trans people shouldn't be attacked and stripped in order to "prove" their "true" identities? Because I don't think they are circus freaks to point and laugh at? Because I think trans people should be allowed to pass, and live as their real gender which is their desired gender without being mocked by the people on this thread? Because I think that if Ann is trans and has transitioned to the degree that she deems necessary and considers herself a woman, she IS a woman, end of story?

Because that's not hatred, fear, or shame. That's respect for people's identities, no matter if they're unusual or if they don't make sense to you. If you think you can find "the truth" by looking up Ann Coulter's skirt, you need to think a little harder. Identities are personal and complex and should be RESPECTED, no matter how crazy or stupid or mean the person is. Period.

  330. trueblue Says:

    Faggot.

Feh. Maybe that sort of thing is good enough for toddlers and the Republican base, but she is going to have to do better than that to get me really riled up…

    Comment by BunBun vonWhiskers

I agree. Yet it has generated 300 posts when things like the VA going to hell hasn't garnered a quarter of the hits.
We like to talk about how Anna Nicole etal aren't "real" news, but here we are talking trash about Coulter.

Our priorities are getting seriously screwed up, IMHO.

  331. rp Says:

who is ann coulter? she deserves no notice.

  332. Diamond Says:

She probably thinks they're gay because all three of them turned her down at one point. She has this huge ego, she thinks she's so beautiful that any person who would turn her down has "latent homosexual tendencies."

  333. exterminaterepugnicansNOW Says:

Exterminate this non-human scum without remorse and before dawn. The world will be a bit less polluted.

  334. Lora Says:

It is a sign that a pundit has nothing really to say about a person running for office when all he/she can come up with is a word like "faggot," even when the politician is actually known to be gay. This is even more true when the politician is known to be happily married with three living (and one dead) child. What is sad is that so many Americans are still willing to lap this hate speech up and pay Ann-thrax lots of $$ to say it.
Finally, while I try to avoid making comments about people's looks, I have to say that that photo of Ann-thrax reminds me of the aging (but once very handsome) Peter O'Toole. I admire O'Toole as an actor and don't mean at all to insult him.

  335. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Mary
Those are fine sentiments. However, she or he is hurling hateful words at others while hiding her own position. No I don't think it's ok to find your own pond, sit in it as a happy trans gender, and then throw mud at others.

And finally Mary, what Ann Coulter proves, if she is in fact a trans gender, she proves that trans genders are just the same as the rest of us. They are just as down and dirty, jsut as capable of lying and deceiving.

So spare me the bs about how poor trans gender Ann should be protected in her trans gender purity. She needs to be outed if for no other reason than to save her sick mind from itself.

I'm doing her a favor, you are not. You are enabling a trans gender who is in denial. I am not.

  342. ciceronyc Says:

What hypocrisy, from Ann. Are you familiar with the verses from Romans 2, "you therefore have no excuse you who pass judgement on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condeming yourself, becuase you who pass judgement do the same things."

I think Ann Coulter is the closet homosexual here.

  343. Dale Says:

It would be great if all politicians, and their supporters would grow up and begin discussing issues and potential resolutions instead of the mudslinging, name calling, and school yard antics that go on and on and on ad nauseam. If Coulter thought her comment regarding Edwards was funny, she has lost touch. Bully tactics and name calling, for shock value, are beneath everyone's dignity and intelligence. Bring some ideas and intelligence to the table. Otherwise don't bother opening your mouth. No one is really listening.

  344. gorn Says:

    Justice:

So why all the anti-transgendered remarks by all you purported liberals who purport to give a damn about queers? Coulter’s remarks are unremarkable for their consistent ugliness, but all this trashing of her appearance and questioning of her gender are only part of the same stupid hate she displays so brilliantly. Get a clue and make a real difference in this world, or shut the hell up.

Good point in principle, but ... it is never wrong to point out hypocrisy, and sometimes irony and humor are useful tools to that end.

When facing evil, the harshest enemy is silence.

The right wing propaganda machine has do destroyed the level of civility in this country, that rational discourse and polite objection by themselves no longer seem effective to counteract it. Both Gore and Kerry lost, incredibly, against a lightweight like GWB. There has to be a lesson learned in there somewhere. When the enemy camp uses outrageous lies and hate as populist fuel, it's not enough to just shake your head. You have to shake the enemy's head, harder.

If more people had challenged Hitler during his long rise, about his many psychological, intellectual, physical, and philosophical deficencies, maybe he could have been short-circuited. To hell with politeness when life and death are at stake, and let's be clear that for right-wing hate all roads lead to death and misery.

  347. Mary Says:

    ChildrenofLir,

You're not doing shit and neither am I. We're posting on an Web page and the only relevant people who are going to see it are trans people, who I'm sure will admire your sentiments and be very glad to know that they are still nothing more than a dirty joke to the "progressives" who are supposed to be on their side.

I think you're full of it, of course, but at least you can sort of articulate a reason for harping on about Ann Coulter's genitals. So why are you defending the hordes of other commenters here who think it's hilarious to make transparently bigoted comments about how Ann is a big ugly "tranny," a "man," and a "faggot"? It's juvenile, transphobic, hurtful, and unwarranted. We are liberals; we are supposed to be fighting for trans people, not laughing about them and using them as insults with which to attack our enemies! You cannot claim to be an ally to trans people and say that this behavior is acceptable. If you really want to be a trans ally you should do some research and find out what that means.

  348. ChildrenofLir Says:

    Mary

If you have a personal beef make it, other wise stop making abstract calls for respect of ann coulter because she's trans gender. Even that doesn't get her off the hook.

  349. gorn Says:

    trueblue:

Can we STOP with that word?!!?

    It’s absolutely DISGUSTING…..

Why? It's just a word for a body part, a crude word to be sure, but unlike Coulter's word it is meant only to demean a particular individual and not an entire class of people.

So, since it's not hate speech, it is merely a "dirty word". I'm guessing in your upbringing this was held out as one of the Really Bad Words that should Never Be Spoken, but aside from youthful indoctrination, really what is the big deal?

I'm not disagreeing that it's a strong word (let me guess that's why it's being used), but I'm wondering what is the justification for your wanting to ban it in a venue that is supposed to be designed for adults to communicate with each other.

Note that I don't use the word (I think I had the same canonical list of Really Bad Words that should Never Be Spoken drilled into me too), but I don't have an objection to reading it and even find it a bit amusing in context.

  350. The Daily Background » Blog Archive » Ann Coulter at CPAC: John Edwards is a “faggot” Says:

[...] it okay for Ann Coulter to basically call John Edwards a “faggot” at CPAC? Well? Will the right-wingers attending the conservative convention denounce this hate [...]

  351. ChildrenofLir Says:

Oh and Mary. I am not a liberal. At least not in the way you mean it.
I don't believe in nodding to minorities and then screwing them in Congress. And I certainly don't believe in taking the people's mandate to stop the war, and then doing the opposite in Congress, which is what is happening now.

I'm not a trans gender ally. I'm not anything. I'm the parent of a military age son, who has been against the Iraq war from day one and will continue to make that my primary concern.

Making fun of Ann Coulter is a bonus.

  352. trueblue Says:

    gorn,

and then telling all other African Americans you don't mean them?

See how that works for you.

  353. Mary Says:

LOL! I'm not calling for respect of Ann. I don't give a fuck about her. I'm calling for respect of the TRANS PEOPLE who are being insulted by all of this! If someone called Dubya a faggot, I'd call them a homophobe on the same principle, and it's not because I have some secret undying love of Bush.

Besides, neither you nor I knows whether Ann is trans. It's a ridiculous delusion to go on like this as though you know her personal history. You just think she MUST be "really a man" because she has a masculine face, and that's plain bullshit. (And rather a bit sexist, but that's another can of worms.)

  354. gorn Says:

    Mary:

we are supposed to be fighting for trans people, not laughing about them and using them as insults with which to attack our enemies!

It's called irony. It's kind of like Ted Haggard railing on about gays, you know?

You cannot claim to be an ally to trans people and say that this behavior is acceptable.

Nonsense. Nobody here despises Coulter because she may be a he (or if not, some genetic experiment gone horribly wrong.) She is despised for being a lying, delusional, hypocritical pig. If she is a he, the only person who would hate her/him for that is Coulter her/himself.

  358. Mary Says:

I don't believe in hypocrisy either, surprise surprise. And there's no reason to bring the war up in this thread. Yeah, the war sucks, and the Democrats in Congress should do something about it, but that's not the topic of discussion here so it's just a red herring, isn't it?

If you're transphobic, then fine––admit it. Don't say that what you and the others here are saying isn't hateful or hurtful. You don't have to care about trans people or be an ally but if you're not going to you should realize that the kind of talk that you're advocating here makes the lives of a lot of trans people, especially young trans people, even harder than they already are. As a mother your first concern should be your son, BUT as a mother you should have some respect for other people's children.

Not sure which thread this refers to. If it's the "don't use THAT word" thread, which was my response to your previous post:

How about using a rational analogy. There is clearly a distinct difference between using the crude name of a body part to insult someone, and using a crude name for a class of people.

If the thread is about people not joking about Annie the Trannie:

Being called a trannie is not insulting if you are one, unless you're in denial. Thus, again, your analogy fails.

It seems that no matter how one describes Coulter, they will run the risk of inadvertantly insulting some other person, animal, or plant matter by association.

Calling her a woman is an insult to women. Calling her a man is an insult to men. Calling her a trannie is an insult to trannies. Calling her a tree stump is an insult to dead trees everywhere. This is a difficult problem.

How's this: Ann Coulter is a caricature that bears no resemblance, physically, psychologically, or spiritually, to any other entity in the universe, living, deceased, or supernatural.

Dang, I think I just insulted caricaturists.

  368. gorn Says:

I thought that you were making fun of my logic by implying that I would be offended on behalf of pigs. If you weren't then sorry.

In all honesty Children, I wish I could meet you in person and talk to you about this stuff––and even the war––over lunch or something. Because Internet arguments bring out the worst in everyone, including me, and I think you're a good person who, if you hadn't met me under these circumstances, might be interested in or concerned about what I have to say. And I would have listened to you, too. I'm being sincere. Arguing and swearing doesn't win anyone over, and for that I am sorry. Maybe we could have had a real discourse, and maybe we could have both of us learned something.

I guess that's the Internet for you. Great tool for communication after all. It is too bad.

I don't have the time to go back and review every single post. There may have been some over the top (again, please, no pun intended).

BUT: Why would it be insulting to a trans person to observe that another person has the appearance of a man in drag, and to further point out that if that were the case, it would be a stunning irony?

If I am an asian woman and someone observes that another person (who is on record as hating asian women) actually looks like an asian woman, is the observer insulting asian women? It doesn't make sense.

Observing that someone looks like a transsexual is insulting only if the word transsexual itself is meant to be derogatory. I know a trannie who calls himself a trannie and observes that other people could pass for one also. What's the big deal?

Bill Maher: All right, speaking of brave women, I have Ann Coulter waiting for me via satellite.
Richard Belzer: I'm going to leave.
    [starts to walk off]
Bill Maher: Don't! No, no, you're not! Sit right there! You know what? This is what's wrong with America. People don't even want to listen to each other. She is a friend of mine, and you will listen.
Richard Belzer: She's a Fascist Party doll! Go ahead, just show her, baby. I think she's had some work done. But go ahead.

    Bill Maher: Boy, is he.
Ann Coulter: I thought it was Osama bin Laden. I can only hear.
Bill Maher: [after the interview with Ann] Ann Coulter, ladies and gentlemen! Jesus Christ, this is what is wrong with this - and I want to get to this. You know, this is a friend of mine, and this is - I think you guys - you - this is why ...
Richard Belzer: What are you talking about?
Bill Maher: No, I'm saying that people ...
Richard Belzer: I've seen her hundreds of times.
Bill Maher: I know, but ...
Richard Belzer: She's a repugnant person who says the most vile things. She lies. She's a liar and you know that. You just confronted her on ten different things. I mean, come on, man! Some people, you have to call them for what they are.

Maher had a panel that was made up of 3 dim wits - the caucasian blond woman who drove Hewlett Packard into the ground or under the ground and who talked condescendingly about how best to run the world (this from a woman who couldn't run a company), the Scottish late-night talk show host (can't remember his name) who was the only one who had anything reasonably intelligent to say, and the ex-deputy Mayor of Chicago, a Republican African American who was adept at double talk.

Bill Maher proceeded to use them as a foil to pronounce his vague wishy washy opinions about the Iraq war.

It was a sad and very boring show. Bill Maher is past his prime.

    "Dear ,

Did you hear about Ann Coulter's speech this afternoon attacking John? A friend just forwarded me the video and it's one of the worst moments in American politics I've seen.
I can't bring myself to even repeat her comments. Her shameless display of bigotry is so outrageous you actually have to see for yourself to believe it.
This is just a taste of the filth that the right-wing machine is gearing up to throw at us. And now that it's begun, we have a choice: Do we sit back, or do we fight back?
I say we fight. Help us raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week to show every would-be Republican mouthpiece that their bigoted attacks will not intimidate this campaign. I just threw in 100 bucks. Will you join me? Just click here.
Coulter's attack was no accident. It happened on national television at one of the year's biggest conservative conferences. Dick Cheney and most of the Republican candidates were in the audience. She was even introduced by Mitt Romney.
John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power. Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter's resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion. And the Republican attack dogs will keep playing this despicable trick as long as they think it works.
But this time, you and I can change the game.
If we can raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week, we can show that bigotry will only backfire on those who use it. John is not the first progressive leader to face this kind of slime, but together, we can make sure he is one of the last.
Tonight, I've put in 100 bucks of "Coulter Cash" to get us started. Can you match me, or chip in whatever you can afford? Just click here: "

  433. Mary Says:

    Gorn,

Why would it be insulting to a trans person to observe that another person has the appearance of a man in drag, and to further point out that if that were the case, it would be a stunning irony?

The thing is that no one here is saying, "That person has the appearance of a man in drag, and if she she were a man in drag, that would be a stunning irony!" If everyone were just saying that, it would be fine. Instead they're saying "LOL OMG TRANNY!"

And "tranny," unlike "trans," "transgendered person" or "transsexual," is a slur. When your friend calls himself a tranny, he's using the word in a reclaimed way, much like some lesbians do when they call themselves dykes. But it's not okay to laugh at a lesbian and call her a dyke, just like it's not okay to laugh at a trans person and call him/her a tranny.

Also, just FYI, a man in drag is a transvestite, not a trans person; trans or transgendered people are those who identify as a gender that isn't the same as their biological sex at birth and who usually physically transition to match their gender identity. This is important here because being a man in drag isn't an identity or something that causes pervasive, lifelong marginalization.

Moving on, though, here's an analogy. Say there's a black pundit who is very obnoxious and conservative and who is against most civil rights for black people and other racial minorities. He says something outrageous to this effect and a video of it is posted on a Web site. In the comments, a bunch of white people make fun of him, saying he's a "n***er." Even though the commenters are making fun of this horrible and hypocritical guy specifically, isn't that offensive to black people? Even if you don't think it is, can you see why it might be problematic?

The problem is that the word "tranny" and some of the other ways people are describing Ann Coulter in this thread are derogatory, and also that when people laugh at Ann Coulter for (supposedly) being a transsexual and not just because she's a hypocrite, it says to trans people that their identity is a joke. When people say that a suspected trans person should be attacked and stripped to reveal their "real" sex, even if that specific person is a crazy hypocrite, that says to trans people, well, a lot of things that I'm sure you can imagine. And when these comments are made by progressives, that says to trans people that there's almost no one that they can trust to respect them.

I know you'll probably think that I'm making an awfully big deal out of nothing. But it just makes me sad that comments like this are still considered acceptable and funny. And you asked why, so I'm responding, and I hope you'll take me seriously.

    Comment by gorn

A rare moment of truth. So would I, gladly. I find her quite appealing. As long as she's a woman or a true transexual. If she's just in drag, no go. I have some long time gay and transexual friends and admit that I'm an admirer of truly femme trannies. So, if she is, that, in itself would not disuade me.

As long as she didn't speak during our lovemaking all would be peachy. But her spoken and written opinions, if called up would quench even my raging lust. Given her prior positions and utterances, I admit I would have to practice selective amnesia to keep to my amatory agenda.

Her behavior is, and has been, completely despicable to date.

It's perfectly fine to have our Democrat leadership go on about "wasted lives" in Iraq and work as hard as they can to secure a defeat for our country, and hypocritically say they support the troops, but let someone deliver a below-the-belt remark about an unknown politician (his record is dismal), and all he|| breaks loose. Boy, that woman is the best argument I can see for being gay!

  438. Barfly Says:

It’s perfectly fine to have our Democrat leadership go on about “wasted lives” in Iraq and work as hard as they can to secure a defeat for our country, and hypocritically say they support the troops, but let someone deliver a below-the-belt remark about an unknown politician (his record is dismal), and all he|| breaks loose.

John McCain said the same thing, Rich. Where's your outrage over his remark? You're a hypocrite.

Her remarks about Edwards were likely out of line, but her intellect is beyond reproach.

Her intellect is second-rate at best, and her books have been revealed as poorly-researched (and poorly cited) screeds.

All you libs are such transparent hypocrits. Jeesh…

    Comment by Rich — March 3, 2007 @ 2:59 am

Coming from a hypocrite like you, it can only be a compliment. Thanks.

  439. Metrodorus Says:

Sorry, Rich. He is a baby killer. Did you think those bombs in Iraq were all video games?

  440. Barfly Says:

    I’m a staunch conservative and I don’t make decisions based on emotions…

You don't make decisions based on emotions? You urine-soaked conservatives just had to invade Iraq after 9/11, 'cause your political leaders scared you so badly with tales of aluminum tubes, and Drones of death. Get real.

  441. Barfly Says:

It’s interesting that no one makes a fuss about the Democrat leadership calling the official president of the United States (as opposed to the wannabe Edwards) Hitler, “Baby Killer”, “World’s Biggest Terrorist”, Dunce etc.

Post the actual quotes, or are you lying again, Rich?

  442. gorn Says:

    Mary:

I know you’ll probably think that I’m making an awfully big deal out of nothing.

Well, I totally understand your points, but I do think you are inflating the nature (most of) the Coulter slams, which has the net effect of deflating attention from the real evil. I mean, your point was worthwhile enough to make. The first time.

It goes without saying that bigotry is wrong. At the same time, directed outrage in an informal forum is at least several steps removed from the formalized hate speech it is attacking. We can't let a benevolent sensitivity turn into a cause-defeating self sensorship.

There's also something to be said for having a sense of humor. Some of the comments I read were pretty funny satire. Coulter will claim she was joking, of course, but that would be a lie. First, she is one disturbingly unfunny person. Second, she commited a Rovian twofer: politically motivated slander of Edwards and a simultaneous hate attack on the gay community.

In short, Coulter makes the world an uglier and more dangerous place. I think your considerable righteous outrage would be better directed against her than the soapbox you've chosen.

  443. bleedingredandblue Says:

This woman exemplifies what is wrong with America as a whole. Her ignorance and intolerance are what plague and infect the American youth. John Edwards is a "faggot"? I'm sure that is why he stood by his wife when she was diagnosed with cancer. If she thinks that "gay America" is the problem, then maybe she should look no further than the republican party and Mike Foley. As I recall, that was an enormous embarrassment to the republican party. Ms. Coulter, you are an ignorant biggot, who has no concept of how a free and accepting society runs. You disgust me and a large percentage of the American population. It was a sad, sad day when you became a respected personality in American politics. Shame on you for your ignorance and prejudice.

  444. Rich Says:

Barfly - I would lump John McCain in with the rest of the hypocritic Libs (he's a lib in a conservative skin). Can't stand him, so, no hypocracy from me there.

You say Ann's books have been cited as being poorly researched. Sorry, that's unfounded as well and likely sourced by a lib. Facts are facts and cannot be disputed, and she's spot-on. Yes, she's sassy and sometimes gets in a grey area with her remarks. If anything, her sarcasm works towards a balance of the hatred coming from the libs. As for her remarks about Edwards today, they were unnecessary. I'd rather that she would have focused on something more tangibly wrong with him, as there is so much from which to choose.

Metrodorus - War is an ugly thing and yes, people die. That's the byproduct of war. Calling the people who fight for the freedom of our country "baby killers" is reminiscent of Viet Nam. Your remarks are evidence that you libs really do want us to be defeated.

  445. FilmR Says:

"Her remarks about Edwards were likely out of line, but her intellect is beyond reproach. All you libs are such transparent hypocrits. Jeesh…"

    Comment by Rich — March 3, 2007 @ 2:59 am

Her f----t comment was way out of bounds. Her intellect is definitely deserving of reproach; more like facile, glib, cunning, malicious and destructive. I may be a transparent Progressive, but not at all hypocritical. I am trying to ignore her character in order to stay aroused. Would I still do her?

    I'm thinking, I'm thinking.

  446. Barfly Says:

Facts are facts and cannot be disputed, and she’s spot-on.

Wrong. She's been repeatedly debunked. But your fixation with her is too great for "facts" to intrude, so, I'll just put you in the "rabidly partisan" category, and quit wasting keystrokes trying to show someone that their bias makes understanding impossible.

  447. gorn Says:

    Rich:

    her intellect is beyond reproach

    Bwahahahahahahahahahaha.....

I thought you were just another meathead troll until I read that line. Turns out it's a brilliant bit of parody.

Intellect beyond reproach, now that's RICH...

"Things in Afghanistan are going swimmingly."

    "Osama bin Laden is irrelevant."

"Liberals are always against America. They are either traitors or idiots.”

“We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity.”

“My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building.”

“The fossil record contradicts [evolution], and it is a theory that cannot be disproved. Whatever happens is said to “prove” evolution. This is the very definition of a pseudoscience, like astrology.”

“The embryonic stem cell debate is a fraud to lure Americans into ceding ground on human experimentation.”

Oh my, yes. A stunning intellect. Thanks for the laugh.

  448. bleedingredandblue Says:

*I'm sorry.... MARK Foley, not Mike. Nontheless, Coulter is still an ignorant biggot. Her comments are the reasons why prejudice and hate crimes still occur in this "free" country. People like her make me sick when I recall singing in middle school "And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free" because with people like her, people will NEVER be free.

  449. gorn Says:

"We can’t let a benevolent sensitivity turn into a cause-defeating self censorship."

    Dang.

  450. Barfly Says:

One last thing, Rich; I see you lied about the democratic leadership, since you didn't post any quotes when I challenged you. Your assertion was crap, and you're too cowardly to admit it. Sadly, this is what conservatism now represents; blindlying partisan bias, that cannot be reasoned with.

  451. Rich Says:

You don’t make decisions based on emotions? You urine-soaked conservatives just had to invade Iraq after 9/11, ’cause your political leaders scared you so badly with tales of aluminum tubes, and Drones of death.

If I recall correctly, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy and a bulk of other Dem leaders are all on record during the Clinton years as almost mandating that we depose Hussein as he was considered to be an upcoming threat to our national security. Hillary is on tape as recently as 2004 as firmly endorsing her decision to go to war based on her personal investigation OVER THE LAST DECADE of Iraq and Hussein (note - she pre-dates Bush in her endorsement). The evidence of WMDs in Iraq was not something Bush forced on Congress - everyone had the same intelligence and everyone agreed in our response. So, now that the war has not been wrapped up in a neat package, the cut-and-run Dems are whining about being "misled". Puhleeez. Real men don't quit when it gets tough. Libs cut and run.

You want to know the epitome of emotion-based decisions? It's all centered around the science fiction of human-caused global warming. Now if THAT isn't letting people's emotions drive them into a frenzy to pass stupid legislation, I don't know what is!!!

  452. Rich Says:

gorn - wow...do you not understand what "sarcasm" is? Have you ever heard of being absurd to illustrate the absurd? If you don't understand what that means, then it's obvious why you don't "get" Ann.

  453. gorn Says:

    Rich:

You say Ann’s books have been cited as being poorly researched. Sorry, that’s unfounded as well and likely sourced by a lib. Facts are facts and cannot be disputed, and she’s spot-on.

Ahhhhh.... I can't take it. Stop. Too. Much. Laughter...

Political books by nature or opinion based, so let's ignore those and focus on her feeble forays into science. With science (I mean, REAL science, not the invented fake science that she cites and promotes) is based on evidence. So, forget being "sourced by a lib". How about being sourced by qualified scientists?

When it comes to science, she is wrong about.... well.... everything. Blissful ignorance preaching to the blissfully ignorant.

If you can be THAT wrong about a rational, unemotional topic like science, that doesn't bode well for having great accuracy on a topic as emotion-ridden as politics.

  454. Robert Says:

Her goal as always is to make weinie Demos cry, and judging from the posts above, she succeeded again. BTW, somebody in Hollywood says something 100 times worse than that about Bush every day. But that's OK because they are "entertainers" right? I got news for you folks, they are all nothing but paid entertainers.

  455. Rich Says:

Barfly - Okay - you want actual quotes of the things these people have said over the past 6 years? I can hunt them down for you, but not at 3:00 am. Just curious - do you dispute that Democrat leadership has made these types of comparisons and launched unmerited personal attacks no GW? Do you remember Dan Rather?

  456. gorn Says:

    Rich:

wow…do you not understand what “sarcasm” is? Have you ever heard of being absurd to illustrate the absurd? If you don’t understand what that means, then it’s obvious why you don’t “get” Ann.

No, I can't recognize sarcasm when I see it. By the way, you're a genius on top of being capable of brilliant parody.

  457. Noir Says:

Wow, and to think, Ann Coulter used to actually be attractive. She could certainly use some help from the Fab 5 herself. She's starting to look like a pathetic drag queen with a meth habit. Faggot, indeed.

  458. Rich Says:

gorn - science? Too general. What science are you referring to?

  459. gorn Says:

    Robert:

Hollywood says something 100 times worse than that about Bush every day.

Really? Please cite examples from the last five days. Let me make it easy on you - cite one example in the last 30 days of "Hollywood" calling Bush a "faggot" or worse. Or, are you just another drive-by right-wing blowhard? All beef with no meat?

But that’s OK because they are “entertainers” right?

Yep, that Mel Gibson did really well with his tirade about Jews, and that other actor (can't remember his name) did really well after calling his fellow actor a "faggot".

And with your logic, of course, there must be some equivalence between what an airhead entertainer and what an Intellectually Giant Right-Wing Pundit says? If so, I suppose that makes Coulter an airhead entertainer.

    Love your logic.

  460. gorn Says:

    Rich:

"What science are you referring to?"

Take your pick. She's pretty much wrong across the board. Try evolution, for starters.

But please, spare us from posting a litany of the usual creationist/ID fake science and goofball distortions that have been debunked thousands of times and serve only to fool the clueless.

Suffice it that I state that she is wrong, repeatedly and egregiously, and the evidence of her wrongness lies in the words she typed at her keyboard and will appear on the record forever in her "Godless" hatebook. If you want to know why she's wrong, do some research with legitimate biologists.

Or, if you really prefer getting your science from a political whore rather than the actual scientific community, well, that's up to you.

  462. Rich Says:

gore - hmm...as it turns out, I have read a few books on the subject of evolution and I have listened to a number of presentations by actual scientists (not just, um, political whores as you put it). Ann's generalization about the fossil record not supporting the theory of evolution is not denied by even those who support it. That's why other theories like punctuated equilibrium came into existance. If you can't find physical evidence, then just make something up! And for the record - I don't dispute evolution. Species adapt to their climate and change over time. What I do dispute is cross-species evolution. This is simply not possible, nor has it ever exceeded the "theory" status. You simply cannot find any credible scientific artifact that supports it.

  465. gorn Says:

    Rich,

I'm a degreed biologist, and I have to tell you your post is riddled with nonsense. It embodies so many misperceptions it would take an hour to post a decent response, and be off topic of this thread to boot. This is not the place to educate you on the distinctions between the solid science of evolution and the insidious pseudo-science that leads to your misperceptions.

It IS the place, however, to reiterate my opinion that Ann Coulter is a shameless political whore who lacks a moral compass.

    Thanks for the exchange.

    Likewise. Have a good rest.

  466. FilmR Says:

"It IS the place, however, to reiterate my opinion that Ann Coulter is a shameless political whore who lacks a moral compass."

    Comment by gorn

    Absolutely in agreement on that.

Still, I'm feelling the urge to do her right. So, anyone got links on AC having been born male? That might help me to get over my lust.

  467. gorn Says:

One more note for Rich, in case he wakes up and bothers to check this thread again.

If you do a Google search on "does the fossil record support evolution", read through the first couple pages of hits. Most of them support your view. Every single one that supports your view is affiliated with some fringe Christian organization or publication. Without exception.

This shows the danger posed by the lack of critical thinking skills. One might be persuaded that the non-scientific view is the correct one for the simple fact that "I clicked on 10 web sites and every single one said evolution was false". The fact is, these pseudo-science sites are so prevalent because these Christian fringe groups care so rabidly about the topic. By contrast, as far as science is concerned, there is no debate. These issues were settled long ago, and nothing new or the least bit challenging has been presented by the creationist/ID camp in decades. Scientists are busy doing science. Creationists are busy building web sites to spread nonsense.

So, your first task is to do the Google search. Your second task is to sort the hits between "site created by real scientists" versus "sites created by Christian groups". Your third task is to set aside the non-science sites and read only the science sites. Your fourth task is to come back and report on the results of your reading this actual scientific literature. A good place to start is the first one that came up on my search, which was here.

Now, for the obligatory reconnection the original thread: Ann Coulter = Cheap Political Whore.

  468. gorn Says:

    FilmR:

So, anyone got links on AC having been born male? That might help me to get over my lust.

Well, first I have to just say "Ewwwwwwww, get some help."

But, in the interest of helping you out with your quest for AC truth, Kurt Nimmo claims:

A few months ago I received an email claiming Ann Coulter is in fact a man, a former drag queen from Key West named Jeremy Levinsohn, aka Pudenda Shenanigans.

    Meanwhile, the truthseeker claims:

There is a rumor going the rounds of the Press Corps that in real life Ann Coulter is a man. He/she was once Arthur Coltrane from Pickens County, Georgia, who went to Denmark when he/she was a teenager for a sex-change operation to become a woman, the operation being paid for by his/her wealthy and doting mother, Darlene Coltrane, heiress to a hog-farming fortune.

I leave it to you to take the research onward from this point. Good luck and godspeed.

  469. Mary Says:

    Gorn,

(Where the heck did my comment go?)

Yeah, Coulter's quite evil, but I've known that for years. I don't think I'm blinding myself to that by taking up this issue; I just don't think it's very useful railing against her anymore. Ignoring her isn't letting her off the hook, it's just giving her the amount of attention she deserves. Not that ranting about her isn't good and cathartic and everything.

I don't think that making a conscious effort not to act in ways that harm marginalized groups is cause-defeating in any way; after all, there are myriad ways of calling Coulter what she is––crazy, evil, stupid, ridiculous, fascistic, etc.––without insulting anyone else in the process. And really, how much more worthwhile is this thread because of all the trans-bashing? I think it could have done fine without it. It could have focused better on the things that are really wrong with Coulter, even.

I always think it's silly to say that a stranger on the Internet doesn't have a sense of humor, especially based on just one interaction. I'm a really happy person, and I'm laughing all the time; you can ask my girlfriend. But there are so many hilarious things in the world that aren't offensive––so why should I lower my standards? :)

P.S. Dear everyone else: What on earth makes you think I'm a right-winger? Hahahaha... Um... Just no. ;)

  470. gorn Says:

    Mary:

how much more worthwhile is this thread because of all the trans-bashing?

Yes, yes, but my point is that people are Ann-bashing not trans-bashing. Are they being trans-insensitive in the process? Maybe so in a minority of cases, but again, that point was made clear enough about 15 posts ago.

If she does turn out to be Arthur Coltrane, or, heaven forbid, Pudenda Shenanigans, I'm going to have one great big braying laugh. Not because she is or was a he (I really don't care about that), but rather because she will be an exposed self-hateful hypocrite a la Ted Haggard, on top of being an other-hateful cretin. The idea of it is very, very funny.

She is being judged here by the content of her character, not by the shape of her genitals, if I may paraphrase MLK.

Ann got groans from her own audience on this. She didn’t and won’t sway any votes with cheap shots like this. However, if Edwards keeps his cool and ignores it, he gains points with his constituency. Ideally there will be a YouTube clip of a reporter asking Edwards for a response. He can laugh, shake his head and say “no comment”.

As a TransGirl, It is just as insulting to me when we sit around and bash someone by calling them a tranny as when she stands up there and calls people faggot.

Just some food for thought people, using a minority group to bash someone for hating a minority group is, well, stupid.

    Comment by raymond — March 3, 2007 @ 11:56 am

The difference is, Raymond, Ann Coulter's language is stirring up hate. Statistics have shown that during the course of the Bush Administration, which has made their homophobia public by proposing "Constitutional Amendments to Ban Gay Marriage, coupled with public decries of hatred by Republican Conservative pundits such as Ms. Coulter, hate crimes towards the homosexual community have more than DOUBLED.

So, no, this is not just about getting our panties in a bunch, this is about individuals, some of whom are employed by our own government, who are inciting violence through their public speeches. The Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, it also guarantees protection from individuals and groups who utilize their freedom of speech to incite violence.

If you don't think they are inciting violence, go ahead and ask victims such as 72 year old Andrew Anthos, who was followed off a bus in Detriot and beaten with a lead pipe on Feb. 13th. because witnesses said the assailant "asked if he was gay because he was singing, Anthos responded yes, and was targeted". Oh, wait, you can't, he's dead.

"Sorry, libs, conservatives don’t have anywhere near a stranglehold on the blowhard spokesholes. Liberals probably have 50 times the number of loony, outspoken media hogs–movie and music industry, anyone?"

Yeah, but when Sean Penn talks politics on TV, he is identified, correctly, as an actor. Ann Coulter, meanwhile, is called a "political analyst" or - even worse - a "constitutional expert." She's an ignorant loudmouth who managed to convince a television producer that she could generate ratings by saying outrageously stupid things and then commenting on the brouhaha she stirred up - political discussion meets Jerry Springer. And millions of people, sadly, are stupid enough to consider it legitimate and intelligent political discourse when she says, for example, that Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Edwards are all either "gay" or "faggots." I agree that no one should form opinions on political matters based on what a celebrity has to say - but that includes people like Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh, who clearly have no more valuable knowledge or insight than Michael Moore or even Mel Gibson.

To: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
cc: Chairs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and House Committee on International Relations

We, the undersigned, vehemently oppose any U.S. military action against Iran. Such military action would inevitably kill large numbers of innocent people, foster even more hatred and international condemnation of the U.S., and dramatically increase the instability of the region. Our own intelligence agencies have concluded the Iraq war has worsened the terrorist threat, and a war against Iran would add immeasurably more fuel to the fire.

Even if Iran decided to build a nuclear weapon, experts agree that it would take several years. There is no crisis, and our government should not create one with inflammatory rhetoric or military threats. The U.S. has both the time and obligation to work with the international community to fashion a diplomatic resolution to the situation, and the current refusal of U.S. officials to talk directly with Iranian officials cannot possibly help resolve the nuclear standoff, nor contribute to peace in Iraq and the Middle East.

Therefore, we urge you to take all steps necessary to reach a peaceful resolution to the current situation, including direct negotiations without pre-conditions. This is the only way to prevent yet another war, one that would be a calamity of truly global proportions.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    No War with Iran!
President Bush is now regularly accusing Iran of supporting attacks on U.S. troops, without any evidence, - remember the WMD's in Iraq, anyone? - adding that "we will seek out and destroy" these networks. Bush has authorized U.S. forces to kill Iranian "operatives" in Iraq, and he is sending nuclear aircraft carriers and missile defense batteries to the Persian Gulf. The unthinkable - a wider war in the Middle East - is unfolding.

John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that any U.S. military move into Iran would be "catastrophically stupid" and "unleash a conflagration like we've never heard of before." We could not possibly agree more.

Resistance to a Bush planned military strike on Iran is growing in Congress, but it needs your help! Sign the petition to Congress below - No War with Iran! House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said recently that she would introduce legislation to stop such a strike, so our demand is beginning to get through. But the pressure needs to be much, much stronger to stop a President who has apparently gone mad with war and his own power.

Please know that your email address is for internal purposes only; we will not send it to the petition recipients nor share it with any other organization for any purpose. Thanks also for forwarding this to your friends, colleagues and listserves. We need everyone who wants to bring peace to the Middle East and prevent a war with Iran to join the effort now!
