Energy Dept. misses all 34 efficiency deadlines.

“The government has missed all 34 deadlines set by Congress for requiring energy-efficiency standards on everything from home appliances to power transformers,” the Government Accountability Office reports. “Two-thirds of the deadlines have yet to be met, although many are more than a decade old. Because of the failures, consumers and corporations stand to pay tens of billions of dollars more for energy than they would have if the deadlines had been met.” Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) has details.

    The Energy Department lacks energy.

  2. DMom says:

Suprise, Suprise….. when the current administration does not accept global warming as fact, why should the Energy Department take it serious?

You know, if I consistently failed to turn in my reports I’d get FIRED. What political crony of Bush’s is running this department?

“we can’t be bothered with that right now – we’re too busy pissing billions of dollars away on a fantasy”

  5. Roger_Roger says:

This is completely unacceptable. Who or how can we hold them accountable though?

  6. ForTruth says:

Someone’s making that extra billions on it.

Automatic profit for the energy producers: this is the point. If we had met our environmental standars, the energy companies would make billions of dollars less income. We can’t have that, can we?

Is anyone surprised that with an oil tycoon in the white house we are in Iraq and our oil industry is unregulated?

Hey, you’re the one with all the answers. What do you think ought to be done? Who is the captain of the ship these days? Where does the buck stop?

C’mon, this is an easy one….

  9. Roger_Roger says:

#8 You missed my point. When the government fails to meet deadlines, how do we hold them accountable? I honestly don’t know outside of electing different people. TP says that many deadlines have been missed by over a decade meaning this has happened over multie administrations and congress’. The problem is when our leaders fail, there is nothing to hold them accountable. No slap on the wrist if you will. IN the end, that just breeds a situation where they don’t care.

Do you honestly think the new congress will be any better? What is holding them back from failing like Bush and the repugs did? Nothinggggg is the answer.

  10. ForTruth says:

At least Roger agrees the government is accountable to no-one and the system is broken.

  11. Raymond Funamoto says:

CHIMPya’s so-called “energy department” is the only one in U.S. history that uses a HAMSTER RUNNING IN A TREADMILL to power its efficiency reviews!!!!!

  12. Roger_Roger says:

#10 It is one of the mean reasons we need to limit government control and give it back to the private sector. At least the private sector is accountable to its shareholders which generally monitor a company with a fine tooth comb. When deadlines aren’t met that cost shareholders money, they get fixed ASAP and people are help accountable. In government, the bueracracy is acocuntable to no one. Why again to you want to turn out healthcare over to government? This is the same government who fails us on education, Social Secuirty, and funding for our troops. The have basically screwed up or done a half ass job on every major government program. It is time we reverse this and take this stuff away from government.

Being accountable to no one is always a bad thing, thus government is usually a bad thing.

Ah, pardon me, Jeffdalon, but who is the “oil tycoon” in the White House?? Bush holds the distinction of being the only person in history to drill for oil in west Texas and NEVER FIND ANY!! That does not a tycoon make!

  17. tom baker says:

Carter saved billions and billions with the 55mph speed limit – look at the gratitude he received.

I stand corrected. I meant to say: Is anyone surprised that with a wanna-be-but-total-failure-of-an-oil-tycoon-with-oil-tycoon-friends-in-this-and-many-other-countries-many-of-which-are-related-to-the-war-in-which-our-American-sons-and-daughters-are-dying in the white house that our oil industry is unregulated?

    better?

  20. Roger_Roger says:

#19 We actually have the most regulated Oil industry in the world. You should see Oil companies from other countries. Hell, our Oil companies can barely drill Oil on American Soil these days. Wanna know whos drilling the Oil off the FLorida coast? What you say? We don’t allow Oil drilling off the FLorida coast!!!

You are correct. We in America are so dumb, we banned drilling for Oil off the Florida coast. Sadly, the small minds of our politicians failed to relize that Oil is a global commodity. Our friends in Cuba of course realized this and sold drilling rights to China. Now sadly, China’s Oil companies do not have to follow to strict rules and regulations of American Oil companies.

So, our stupidity now has a foreign country with limited regulations and a horrible environmental record drilling Oil just off the florida coast. They gulp up this valuable resource and damage OUR environment much more then if we did it with cleaner more regulated American companies. In the end, we get absolutely nothing for it other then a probable environmental mess and the loss of the potenial energy we could have gained.

Our Oil companies are forced to drill in places like NIgeria. We force them to do it because we Americans don’t care half as much about other countries we can’t see everyday. The whole things is very sad.

To: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
cc: Chairs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and House Committee on International Relations

We, the undersigned, vehemently oppose any U.S. military action against Iran. Such military action would inevitably kill large numbers of innocent people, foster even more hatred and international condemnation of the U.S., and dramatically increase the instability of the region. Our own intelligence agencies have concluded the Iraq war has worsened the terrorist threat, and a war against Iran would add immeasurably more fuel to the fire.

Even if Iran decided to build a nuclear weapon, experts agree that it would take several years. There is no crisis, and our government should not create one with inflammatory rhetoric or military threats. The U.S. has both the time and obligation to work with the international community to fashion a diplomatic resolution to the situation, and the current refusal of U.S. officials to talk directly with Iranian officials cannot possibly help resolve the nuclear standoff, nor contribute to peace in Iraq and the Middle East.

Therefore, we urge you to take all steps necessary to reach a peaceful resolution to the current situation, including direct negotiations without pre-conditions. This is the only way to prevent yet another war, one that would be a calamity of truly global proportions.
    ———————————————————————–
    No War with Iran!
President Bush is now regularly accusing Iran of supporting attacks on U.S. troops, without any evidence, – remember the WMD’s in Iraq, anyone? – adding that “we will seek out and destroy” these networks. Bush has authorized U.S. forces to kill Iranian “operatives” in Iraq, and he is sending nuclear aircraft carriers and missile defense batteries to the Persian Gulf. The unthinkable – a wider war in the Middle East – is unfolding.

John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that any U.S. military move into Iran would be “catastrophically stupid” and “unleash a conflagration like we’ve never heard of before.” We could not possibly agree more.

Resistance to a Bush planned military strike on Iran is growing in Congress, but it needs your help! Sign the petition to Congress below – No War with Iran! House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said recently that she would introduce legislation to stop such a strike, so our demand is beginning to get through. But the pressure needs to be much, much stronger to stop a President who has apparently gone mad with war and his own power.

Please know that your email address is for internal purposes only; we will not send it to the petition recipients nor share it with any other organization for any purpose. Thanks also for forwarding this to your friends, colleagues and listserves. We need everyone who wants to bring peace to the Middle East and prevent a war with Iran to join the effort now!
