At the Conservative Political Action Conference yesterday, right-wing activist and anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist urged conservatives not to work to accomplish anything in the current Congress.
“Get married, develop a hobby, learn to belly dance, learn to golf — you know, we got two years free, but we gotta spend time and effort playing defense here,” Norquist said. “Our job is to say ‘no, no, no, no’ for two years.”
Norquist predicted, “People are gonna go, ‘oh maybe this bill isn’t as bad as it looks.’” But he warned, ” Don’t eat it, don’t swallow it, don’t touch it. Nothing good passes this Congress.” Watch it:
Transcript:
NORQUIST:Nothing good happens in the next two years out of this Congress. Nothing good.
If you read in the newspaper that there’s a bill with a nice sounding name, and it sounds in the first sentence like the bill is good, you haven’t read the whole bill.
Nothing good happens. They’re not going to cut taxes.
(APPLAUSE)
Look, get married, develop a hobby, learn to belly dance, learn to golf — you know, we got two years free, but we gotta spend some time and effort playing defense here.
Because the Democrats are going to be like young men on prom dates — they’re gonna keep asking the same question of us over and over and over again. And our job is to say “no, no, no, no” for two years.
It doesn’t do us any good to go “no, no, yes” okay? It has to be “no” for two years in a row. It’s going to be tiresome, it’s going to be boring. People are gonna go, “oh maybe this bill isn’t as bad as it looks.” Don’t eat it, don’t swallow it, don’t touch it. Nothing good passes this Congress.
Plan for the future and read novels.
Spite is a wonderful governing philosophy.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:08 pmHere’s a better suggestion: SIT DOWN, SHUT THE F**K UP AND STAY OUT OF THE WAY.
Got it, GOP?
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:10 pmGrover Norquist belongs in prison.
Decon.
It kills the 2 legged rats. Republicrats.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:11 pmWell gosh, the rubber-stampers didn’t doing anything for 6 years and now Norquist recommends they sit on their fat old asses for 2 more years, doing nothing. Why should voters elect these do nothing republicans?
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:12 pm…..but that’s not “obstructionism”, is it grover…..
everyone should forward his remarks to their Democratic Senators and Congresspersons, and insist that they respond with what exactly they’re going to do about this kind of treasonous garbage.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:14 pm“Nothing good passes this Congress.â€
Actually, it should be “Nothing good passed this PAST Congress.â€
It was the American people that got tired of the lies and “culture of corruption” that the Republicans brought with them and voted them the h3@$ out of office!
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:14 pmw o w … just another w o w …
oh, and decon, i really like that: republicRATS…
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:15 pmAnd after two years there won’t be but a few jerk republicans in office so it will be a moot point Grover.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:16 pmwhat a stupid, infantile c*nt.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:16 pmThis comment won’t make it through, and if so I’m okay with that…I just need to get it off my chest: what an unadulterated PRICK!
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:17 pmGrover Norquist is the guy who wanted to drown the Federal government in a bathtub.
Sounds like TREASON to me. Get a rope.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:19 pmThe new GOP lament: (adapted from “Hee Haw!”)
Gloom, dispair, and agony on me. (Whooooaaaa!)
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:22 pmDeep down depression, excessive misery! (Whooooaaaa!)
If it weren’t for corruption, I’d have no funds at all! (Whooooaaaa!)
Gloom, dispair, and minority status on me!
Fortunately, the little power Grover and his flunkies had during the early Bush administration years is falling through his greasy little hands. How does a guy like this make enough money to pay his mortgage, let alone have so much power in the minds of the gullible Conservatives?
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:22 pmSo Grover’s message to Americans is “We will do nothing good.” Seems like that has been the Republicans’ governing philosophy for the past six years too.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:24 pmSurely no one is surprised at this divisive strategy…
…the Repulsivescum have been the enemy of government from the day they gained control of all FOUR branches…
…they have no vested interest in seeing the government work for the people because…
…they realize that the people have been STUPID enough to blame EVERYTHING Repulsivescum conned’self-servatives have botched…
…on Democrats…
…and the Democrats have been too civil and collegial (playing under the OLD pre-Bush/Cheney Congressional playbook)…
…to call the Repulsivescum out on their criminality and TREASON…
…maybe because the Democrats have skeletons THEY don’t want the Repulsivescum to reveal to the DUHmerican public…
…at any rate…
…for now- without that 60 vote margin- it’s a stalemate…
…hopefully the Democrats can put enough pressure on the corporate controlled media…
… to articulate to the DUHmericans how EVIL and TREASONOUS the conned’self-servatives REALLY are…
…and take back the WH, control of BOTH houses of Congress, and the people’s airwaves in ‘08…
…THEN and only then will…
IMPEACH
INCARCERATE and
IMPOVERISH
…be possible…
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:28 pmIf I didn’t know better… I’d think that sounded a lot like “obstructionism”.
But that couldn’t be. Republicans USED to consider “obstructionism” as Unamerican, right? Can someone check on that for me?
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:29 pmGrover Norquist hates everything in this country except money, and people with money.
He deserves to be in stocks, and people working 3 minimum wage jobs can take turns throwing rotten tomatoes at him, and kicking him the ass.
He’d cry like a motherless baby.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:30 pmVery Telling. The attitude of a true obstructionist.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:31 pmWow …
You know, as disgusting as Norquist’s suggestion is, if he thinks blocking legislation that helps average Americans is going to help the GOP, he has got to be the worst political consultant since Rasputin.
Let them try to stop these bills, and watch the Dems make HUGE gains in 2008.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:35 pmHow did Grover not find himself in jail for his ties to Abramoff? Melanie Sloan I’m looking at you :)
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:35 pmNorquist should be dropped in the middle of Iraq, completely naked wearing just two wooden signs that read “I hate Iraqi’s” on one side and “Bush is my lover” on the other. Let’s see his fat ass try to get out of that one.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:39 pmWhy do Republicans hate America? They should go back to where they came from.
(under a rock, I mean)
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:39 pmWarning admitted Snarky comment:
Perhaps in the next election, we can shrink the size of the Republican Party in Congress so we can drown it in a Bathtub.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:39 pmwill some not as yet fired US Attorney please look in to this fellows tax evasion? we’d appreciate it. thanks
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:40 pm#15 May I just say I love you big papa
You always know how to say it so perfect…. I enjoy reading your responses.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:43 pm“Nothing good passes this Congress”
Oh. You mean, business as usual as it was over the past 2 years.
Should be easy enough to do. The Reps have a lot of practice at it.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:44 pmwhat do you call a conservative republikkklan at the bottom of the ocean?
A good start.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:44 pmSo the culture of corruption and do nothing-ness continues. They must not want to regain power.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:47 pm#27
Hahahahahahahaha
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:47 pmShawn - don’t give up hope - Abramhoff is still talking - his sentencing for the second set of crimes was just put off for six months while he testifies. I fully believe Grover will be doing time within the next few years. He should spend the next two years lining up people who will keep his commisary account full once he gets there.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:48 pmHello stunning Cory,
Good one.
What do you call a busload of Republicans going over a cliff with an empty seat?
A crying shame. :-D
To answer your question from the other night — Sociology. My liberal heart bleeds….
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:48 pmIts funny how Clinton gets impeached for a blowjob, but these traitors and criminals are getting away with murder. Chimpy is running the most corrupt and criminal regime in the nation’s history and we will be lucky to survive it.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:49 pmParty before people. Gee, where has that philosophy been applied before (and before, etc…)?
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:54 pm#27 - Spoken with true-”blue” compassion! Just one question: IF the Dems are sooo GREAT, why are the cities they’ve been running for 50 years $h*th*les?
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:55 pmLet them try to stop these bills, and watch the Dems make HUGE gains in 2008.
Comment by Unholy Moses
He doesn’t care about the next election; he knows that with voters, his “brand” is now as popular as Peter Pan peanut butter. To regain control, rebranding the party from the rubberstamps they are now known as is essential - and obstructionism is the path to that goal. They’ve larded the various agencies with think-tankers who will stay on-message, and take every opportunity to monkey-wrench progressive programs, even politically popular ones, to regain eventual control. I think they’ll be even worse off, when the consequences of the Bush admin.’s short-sighted policies bear repugnant fruit.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:56 pmThat pretty much firms it up. That bastard is a terrorist. I don’t know what affiliation he is, but one thing is certain, he hates America and is a spineless traitor that should be dragged before the public and flogged .
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:57 pmWhy are American cities falling apart? Its not the Democrats fault.
You Repukes all fled to the suburbs and wrecked the cities tax base.
Then you Repukes cut all the social programs to fund the Iraq mess.
Our decaying inner cities are the Repukes’ fault.
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:58 pm#27 - Spoken with true-â€blue†compassion! Just one question: IF the Dems are sooo GREAT, why are the cities they’ve been running for 50 years $h*th*les?

LOL you’ve just proven your ignorance right there. NYC a sh*thole? Guliani sold every square inch to ABC/Disney (and he was/is definitely more of a social Democrat/Liberal), but I would hardly call Bloomberg Republican. Bloomberg pretty much ran on the Republican ticket to get into office at the time, but every New Yorker knows he is a liberal democrat, just look at his record and you’ll see the truth (that is, if you can get away from your high profile law cases and family, being a 20 something high powered ex-military lawyer must be really challenging - :eye rolls: ).
March 2nd, 2007 at 3:59 pmWhat ever happened to the real trollers ?
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:00 pmLike IRI . . . BSR . . . NED . . . .

Hagette,
Do tell us another charming story about your dead child; and another about your latest trial. Oh please….
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:00 pmRead the polls, Grover. Americans don’t want what you guys are selling. They DO want what the Dems are offering. If you try to block things that the Dems are trying to do for them, they’ll remember you in November ‘08. Didn’t you learn anything from losing both houses of Congress last November? My god are you Republicans thick.
By the way, Grover, aren’t you supposed to be under investigation for something? I think it was Abramoff-related, wasn’t it? Oh well, I hear Jack’s still singing like a canary. They’ll get around to you eventually.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:02 pmWhy do people continue to listen to this guy?
Is this just something they want to hear?
Their policies (and I use that term loosely) have proven worthless. We are in debt up to our eyebrows, the military is broken, the economy is on the edge of a cliff, health care is costing more and delivering less (funny, but I thought that “competition” was supposed to drive down costs!), and our standing in the world drops daily.
What part of reality don’t these people understand?
Oh, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight…
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:04 pmOne person blaming this or that on one party, another person blaming it on the other party. What a sad state of affairs.
No longer are any Americans responsible for anything because they can always blame it on the other “half”. Quite pathetic actually but does clearly answer the question so oft asked here: “How do they expect to get away with it?”
There is no “they”, only we.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:04 pmWhat’s interesting about ValientVenus’ comment is that the 1990’s witnessed a regentrifacation of many American urban strongholds. Having lived in Boston from 1998-2001, the South End and Back Bay (as well as Newbury St.) boomed, with Victorian Brickhouses and brownstones sky rocketing from worthless crack houses to multi-million dollar homes. Manhattan is another prime example, as area’s like the East Village (alphabet city), LES, and even up near Columbia I pass by area’s between the Morningside Campus on 116 St and the Medical School Campus on 164th St in Harlem and Spanish Harlem that are thriving and booming. Hell, even her “home city” of San Diego has seen a turn around with the Gas Light District. More importantly, Hillcrest neighborhood in San Diego turned around greatly due to the homosexual community’s investment and living. Further, the South End in Boston, Harlem and Lower East Side in Manhattan, West Hollywood in L.A. - all the neighborhoods that the homosexual community invested in have turned around into real estate gold mines. All good brokers know, as the running joke goes, if you want to follow the money, follow the gay community.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:05 pmWould someone please tell this doofus (Norquist) that his idiocy is showing - and showing badly! What I find fascinating is how these fools and nincompoops who are charlatans at best/criminals at worst but feign a modicum of dignity when in official positions allow their level of frustration at “losing control of the Congress” self-destruct so rapidly. Utterly amazing! How many is that now who have reduced their position and status to one of carnival-type chicanery? So many idiots to remove from office/so little time! ah yes!
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:05 pmAnother case of Grover groveling…..and ending up with his mind in the gutter.

Spoken like a misinformed troll, as usual. Remember that famous map after the 2004 elections that compared what states received from the federal government vis-a-vis what was paid in by those states? Almost without exception, Red states received more than they contributed. Blue states contributed more than they received. Lesson: Red states are sinkholes and run into the ground.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:06 pmWhy hasn’t this arrogant pig been indicted yet? He’s tied with Ralph Reed and Ney. Thanks to Gonzales the GOP syndicate continues sapping this country dry.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:07 pmPeople like him make me in favor of “extraordinary rendition,”…for people like him!
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:08 pmHey everyone, you’re missing the point.
No, no, no, no . . . .
Let’s see.
No to any more money for Bush’s war in Iraq.
No to any more money for Bush’s war to be in Iran.
No to any more money for Bush’s religious programs.
No to any more money for Bush’s friends in high places.
No to any more money for Bush for Halliburton.
No to any more money for Bush for the oil companies.
No to any more money for Bush for new defense systems.
It sounds good to me.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:09 pm#15 big papa: The only reason I can figure why the democrats won’t go after the criminal, treasonous neocons is that they are afraid of making waves with the very large corporations.
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:15 pmThis man is a jackass. The Dems are completely capable of passing solid legislation. Of course you should say no if they try and pass some rediculous new tax that hurts American families, but that has always been the case. When they vote on things like more funds and equipment for out troops, I expect them to be voting yes to that. When they vote for minimum wage increase etc., they should be voting yes. Maybe just maybe the Dems will attemt to fix Social Security and Mediaid so it doesn’t bankrubt out country. I hope they work with them on that as well.

A particularly tasty irony; Valiant is too afraid to go to Southeast San Diego at night, yet she rags on liberal cities. But where have the nutcase conflagrations occurred?
Waco Tx. - Conservative cowpatty that bred Koresh, the religiously inspired nutbar.
Oklahoma City - Red-necked capitol of conservative Heaven.
San Diego - Conservative military town, where crazed, meth-head ex-servicemen go on joy-rides in tanks (years ago), and people are chopped up, and left out in the open (days ago). Or stabbed by lunatics as they walk out of pharmacies, within blocks of several mental health facilities (weeks ago).

But didn’t you just say you were against tax increases?
That’s the only thing that will fix the system. That, and not spending the surplus on bullsh#t. Roger, I have yet to hear a conservative or libertarian honestly answer this: why does someone making a million dollars a year deserve a lower overall tax rate than someone making $90,000?
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:25 pmGrover Norquist tried to get married but his bride found out he was SEEING Gannon/Guckert ON THE SIDE, he took up a hobby, of TORTURING and KILLING SMALL DEFENSELESS ANIMALS UNTIL A RABID HAMSTER BIT HIM ON HIS NOSE, he tried to learn belly-dancing BUT THE PASTE GEM KEPT POPPING OUT OF HIS POT-BELLY, and tried to learn golf BUT THE IRATE American citizens KEPT SHOVING HIS OWN CLUBS UP HIS ANUS BECAUSE OF HIS VILE YAP–So, GIVE IT UP, Norquist, YOU REPULSIVE repugnant-repub, rightwingnut crank PIECE OF HYENA-SHIT!!!!!
March 2nd, 2007 at 4:27 pmProgressives have been claiming “dissent is Patriotic” - but the truth is, while the dissent is protected speech - unless it inspired by a LOVE of country - it is NOT patriotic. For example, one member of “your side” shleps tee-shirts including the following:
United States of Canada T-Shirts
“In this t-shirt, the red states that voted for George Bush in the 2004 Presidential election are grouped together and just called Texas. The blue states and all of Canada are grouped together to form the United States of Canada. As the t-shirt implies, the values of blue staters are more in line with the equality that exists within Canada. The red states are more closely aligned with the close-minded values of the State of Texas. This shirt will get people to think that a separation is possible down the road. It may be funny today, but the country is becoming more and more splintered across party lines. Very few states changed colors from 2000 to 2004 and it doesn’t project to change much in the future.”
http://www.politicalcritic.com/shirts
(Pssst….Hope this mention helps you make a boatload of $$$$ - - with all those taxes and “freebies”, the cost lof living is higher in C’da.)

March 2nd, 2007 at 4:34 pm52 That’s the problem Rogerx2,
Your side of the aisle (of which Mr. Norquist is but ONE example) have repeatedly shown that they wont work with our side even on things that matter to the American people. Isn’t it funny that just a year ago, things like “obstructionism” and the filibuster were BAD things and, suddenly what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander? The hypocrisy is staggering!
I will agree with you on 1 thing though: Super grover is a jackass of the highest caliber.

And how many of your side peddle t-shirts with the Confederate flag, honoring an actually seditious, treasonous history?
Just because you think you are the goddess of love, you have no power to know what is in the heart of us progressives and judge whether our dissent is based on love of country or not. It is because we say it is. You are not old enough, or rather mature enough, to comprehend deep, abiding, love that can include criticism. Your reliance on a fake biography while engaging in the democratic process of debate of issues, makes your love of country as superficial as a love affair with a person through computer contact only.

Let’s see we should give taxpayer money to oil companies that are declaring the biggest profits ever made by a US company?
Gee, that seems like a great way to spend taxpayer money.
Oh, I know it’s for exploration. $60.00/barrel oil doesn’t give them enough incentives.
Of course the Bush family/Saudi oil connections have nothing to do with those decisions. Do they? It’s because it’s better for the country. Right?

Using true accounting principles, Social Secuirty and medicare pur roughly $2-$3 trillion extra unpaid debt on the books each and every year. March 2nd, 2007 at 5:42 pm#77 The only loophole in Social Security is the cap on it. After a certain amount of income you stop paying in. You could certainly remove that cap, but you still get no where close to paying the debt.
It is so bad right now, we gain more debt each year from Social Secuirty and Mediaid then the entire Federal Budget is worth per year. Currently, the Federal Debt is so how we could take every penny from our economy for an entire year and not pay it off. This is what bankrupcy is called. We got here from politicans creating programs that we cannot possible pay for.
The new prescription drug plan is another example. We need $7 trillion more to pay for it. That of course is not possible. That alone would cost the average american family another $10,000 or so per year to pay for. If we wanted to run deficit free, currently we would need at least $25,000 extra from each American Family. Obviously that isn’t even kinda possible. The only solution left is to cut these programs or reduce there scope by 60% or more.
Social Security should be increased to age 77 before you collect. You shouldn’t be able to collect more then you put in. We should also remove the cap on paying in to Social Security.
The Prescription Drug Benefit should simply be removed as it isn’t feasible in any shapre way or form.
Mediaid should also be completely redone and we need much stricker standards to get it. This programs costs us 1/2 of what Social Secuirty does.

That’s a st*pid claim. Cutting taxes reduces revenue. When an economy grows - even by a small amount, revenues grow. But the revenue growth is related to economic growth - not the tax cuts. If you’re going to be st*pid enough to claim that the economy grows ‘because’ of the tax cut - you have to compare it to periods of growth following tax increases to see if the growth is higher. It isn’t - therefore you’re proven to be a st*pid c*nt that will believe anything she wants to believe!
In otherwords, you claim that tax increases occurred because of tax cuts - which is something only the most st*pid of c*nts would believe or repeat!
This was especially true when the top tax rate went from 70% to 28% - now there was some business stimulus and investment going on!! Comment by valiant venus — March 2, 2007 @ 5:42 pm
How old are you *moses*? How much time was there in that drop? And are you referring to an ‘excessive’ tax rate - versus a non-excessive one? A 99% tax rate would be excessive enough to dissuade investment. Sorry, but we haven’t been in any excessive tax rates in decades. So your ‘general’ declaration is the foolism comment of a stupid childish little c*nt.

Many people would consider my wife and I rich because together we do make a good income. But what we pay is our FAIR share of taxes. We have benefitted from student loans, public schools, five colleges (six if you count our daughter’s), highways, museums, and many other tax supported items which many with lesser incomes would not use. It is my PATRIOTIC PLEASURE to repay the country I LOVE with a portion of my good fortune and earned income. That, “dear” goddess wannabe is what patriotism is, not your fakery. So, you can say “thank you” to me and then shut up with the labelling of progressives as anti-American or unpatriotic.

Tax cuts don’t stimulate the economy. If they did, the 2001-2006 period wouldn’t have been the worst recovery in recent times - as it was. The economy naturally grows, unless severe economic collapse occurs.

March 2nd, 2007 at 10:47 pmListen up class,
Tax cuts do NOT reduce tax revenue always nor does it increase tax revenue always. Tax increase do no increase tax revenu always nor does it decrease tax revenue always. Huh you say???
Imagine that we reduced taxes to 0%. The government would then get $0 per year. Now imagine we raised taxes to 100%. At 100% the government would once again get $0 per year as no one would work for free. What does this all mean you ask?
Simple. You need to draw yourself a graph. Then you need to figure our the sweet spot for taxes. At some point taxes become to high and force people to work less or not at all simple because the return isn’t good enough. If you lower taxes too much, you simply leave money on the table. So, lower taxes is not always good nor is raising taxes. THis is very tricky however to figure out if we are under or over the sweet spot. Technically, the smart move would be to play with the rates a bit and watch the results. If we currently raised the rates a tad and the markets, job growth, and spending all went down, we then know that we are over the sweet spot and reducing taxes would actually mean MORE tax revenue. On the flip side, if we reduced taxes and watched as our tax revenue decreased because of it, we then know we are leaving money on the table and we should raise taxes back up.
Basically, Dems and Repugs are never correct with their answers to these questions. It is false to say that ALWAYS lowering taxes means more tax revenue, but sometimes it is in fact true. It is also false to say that ALWAYS raising taxes means more tax revenue.
Thanks for your time class. YOur dismissed.

You aren’t terribly bright are you?
Your entire idealogy of dropping taxes to up income doesn’t work. It has failed. Trying to pretend otherwise is basically just a reflection of the fact that you are thick.
In the end you get what you pay for, taxes should be raised to pay off America’s debts and pay for America’s expenses. You don’t get shit for free in this world and it doesn’t take an economic genius to figure out that dropping taxes and then entering two frigging wars is not the brightest action possible.
And this is not liberalism, this is real fiscal responsibility - not the total immoral thieving bad-debt philosophy of the rightwing.
March 3rd, 2007 at 5:40 amMan TP, your users have just dropped to a new low of dumbness. You have this ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus who demeans women every chance he gets. In almost every single post in fact. Does that sit ok with this crowd? I guess so. You also have Bruce Gorton who fails at reading. Bruce reread my post carefully please. I never once said we SHOULD lower taxes nor did I say we SHOULD raise them.
I currently have no clue if taxes are truly too high or too low. Like I said before, there is a sweet spot and that spot optimizes your tax returns. Going above or below it actually decreases tax revenue. This isn’t an opinion, this is economics 101. If you raised taxes to say 95%, do you honestly think that would raise tax revenues? I need some help from ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus. He needs to call you that demeaning name towards women if you believe that. No one works if you raise taxes to high or they at least reduce there amout of work as the return just doesn’t matter. Again, this isn’t an opinion and you don’t need college to figure this out. A 1st grader can understand this. Ask yourself, would you go to work if you got absolutely nothing? Would you go to work for $0.50 per hour? At what price would you start going to work? At what price would you work the most hours at? That last question is the optimize your tax returns question. The government needs you at work as much as possible at the highest tax rate possible to optimize their return. Again, this isn’t something to agree or disagree on, this is just economics 101.

To: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
cc: Chairs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and House Committee on International Relations
We, the undersigned, vehemently oppose any U.S. military action against Iran. Such military action would inevitably kill large numbers of innocent people, foster even more hatred and international condemnation of the U.S., and dramatically increase the instability of the region. Our own intelligence agencies have concluded the Iraq war has worsened the terrorist threat, and a war against Iran would add immeasurably more fuel to the fire.
Even if Iran decided to build a nuclear weapon, experts agree that it would take several years. There is no crisis, and our government should not create one with inflammatory rhetoric or military threats. The U.S. has both the time and obligation to work with the international community to fashion a diplomatic resolution to the situation, and the current refusal of U.S. officials to talk directly with Iranian officials cannot possibly help resolve the nuclear standoff, nor contribute to peace in Iraq and the Middle East.
Therefore, we urge you to take all steps necessary to reach a peaceful resolution to the current situation, including direct negotiations without pre-conditions. This is the only way to prevent yet another war, one that would be a calamity of truly global proportions.
———————————————————————–
No War with Iran!
President Bush is now regularly accusing Iran of supporting attacks on U.S. troops, without any evidence, - remember the WMD’s in Iraq, anyone? - adding that “we will seek out and destroy” these networks. Bush has authorized U.S. forces to kill Iranian “operatives” in Iraq, and he is sending nuclear aircraft carriers and missile defense batteries to the Persian Gulf. The unthinkable - a wider war in the Middle East - is unfolding.
John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that any U.S. military move into Iran would be “catastrophically stupid” and “unleash a conflagration like we’ve never heard of before.” We could not possibly agree more.
Resistance to a Bush planned military strike on Iran is growing in Congress, but it needs your help! Sign the petition to Congress below - No War with Iran! House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said recently that she would introduce legislation to stop such a strike, so our demand is beginning to get through. But the pressure needs to be much, much stronger to stop a President who has apparently gone mad with war and his own power.
Please know that your email address is for internal purposes only; we will not send it to the petition recipients nor share it with any other organization for any purpose. Thanks also for forwarding this to your friends, colleagues and listserves. We need everyone who wants to bring peace to the Middle East and prevent a war with Iran to join the effort now!

Comment by valiant venus
Thanks for the kneejerk reaction, I knew some troll would take the bait. Cutting spending doesn’t work, the Reagan years proved that. All that did was blow a huge hole in the deficit. And yes, raising taxes on the affluent would save social security. With the affluent fully invested in Social Security, they would be more concerned with its solvency. It would then be an issue which unites us as Americans, as we would all be in the same boat, financially speaking, unlike the present, two-tiered system, which divides us along an arbitrary, economic line: the cut-off point at which high-income citizens stop paying the same, dollar for dollar, as less economically fortunate taxpayers.

Anyone who claims that tax cuts bring about a better way of life is showing what a xenophobic cousin-marrying moron looks like, something that you find in all social strata. If you go to any country other than the United States where taxes are higher (all civilized countries, that is), you see what benefits taxes bring: cleaner environment, better educated and more well-rounded children, less dichotomy between rich and poor. Japan immediately comes to mind.
March 4th, 2007 at 1:06 amDear * Hater - Put your fingers in your wallet and not just your keyboard - YOU can pay as much in taxes as you WANT. I am not against taxes - I am against waste. I believe national defense, infrastructure, education, assistance for disabled and elderly, etc. are all GOOD things we should gladly support with our federal, state, property, and sales taxes. Add to those the umpteen taxes on your tires, telephone, and utility bills and you may Americans are NOT undertaxed.
So again, to all liberal individuals and organizations (”anything goes” churches and non-profits): Put UP or shut up. Let libs pay as much in taxes as is necessary to assuage their guilt. Let all the churches and non-profits who advocate more entitlements aubject themselves to taxes. Afterall, it’s very EASY to love your neighbour with other people’s money.
March 4th, 2007 at 4:10 pm#13O has a point here. The Fed’s do not deny any of you the right to pay more in taxes. I can only assume that each and every one of you that want’s higher taxes already pays the extra amount you think we should be paying or your a hypocrit.
