In an interview, Army Secretary Francis Harvey, who resigned on Friday, “defended his decision to temporarily appoint” Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley as Walter Reed’s commander. “He said Kiley called him a few days ago and lambasted The Washington Post’s series on the medical center. ‘He called me and said, “I’m willing to defend myself. … I want to have an opportunity to defend myself, and it was wrong and it was yellow journalism at its worst, and I plan on doing it. Trust me.”‘ Harvey said. ‘I said, “Okay, Kevin.”‘” Though Kiley will no longer oversee Walter Reed, he remains the Army’s top medical official.

“Yellow” lol omfg what a nice play on words there omfg lol.
March 4th, 2007 at 5:29 pmThe only thing yellow about the story was a urine stain from Walter Reed.
March 4th, 2007 at 5:30 pmThis is why I invented Karma.
March 4th, 2007 at 5:31 pmHe’s still the Army’s Top Medical Officer?!! What is wrong with this picture? Incredible!
March 4th, 2007 at 5:42 pmApparently he doesn’t know what “yellow journalism” is. And in what possible way can he defend himself, unless he claims that he forced to hire Kiley?

March 4th, 2007 at 5:55 pmFacts are yellow? So be it.
March 4th, 2007 at 6:24 pmHarvey and Kiley–should be renamed TWEEDLEDUMB and TWEEDLEDUMBER, one is a moron and one is worse, here’s to the one who can remember this verse:
March 4th, 2007 at 6:37 pm“Your duty, YOU FOOLS
Is to make sure the TOOLS
Work PROPERLY in the HOSPITAL CENTER
And not to let VERMIN into there ENTER!
Keep the GODDAMN PLACE CLEAN, YOU TWERPS!
And BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR STUPID QUIRKS!”
While looking at the conditions of the living area and Kiley saying it’s not that bad as mice/roaches crawling around and stained dirty walls with holes that you can see the sky, it’s ok for our injured troops but not for upper managerment. Now I wonder would Kiley live there? At night when the mice/roaches come out and crawl over the opened wounds and infected the soldier I guess that’s no problem to Americans, Military, White House just keep saying STAY THE COURSE. We know the money went to Iraq and the war profiteers not our troops. But until Americans do care about our troops nothing will change. 4 soldiers died today while the US just talks and watch TV. No one really cares as more will die tomorrow that could have been saved.
March 4th, 2007 at 6:43 pmNotice that the deplorable conditions continued until it was well-publicized by the “yellow press”. The ONLY reason things are being fixed is because of all the bad PR. Nothing gets fixed unless the army gets 2 black eyes in the public. No press exposure = continued bad treatment.
March 4th, 2007 at 7:06 pmI can hardly wait. Ten paces at dawn. Who’s the better shot–Dana Priest or Dr. Urine, the gynecologist.
March 4th, 2007 at 7:16 pmStrictly speaking, the Washington Post story about the conditions at Walter Reed cannot be considered “yellow journalism” — quite the contrary. This story is a sterling example of what journalism should be and so seldom is anymore — in fact, if I may be so bold, it seems to me that a goodly portion of what we consider to be the mainstream media these days has fallen prey to “yellow journalism”. Kiley is conveniently (and improperly) using that phrase to refer to these stories because they are damaging to his reputation — but if he had done what he was supposed to and what was reasonably expected of him, chances are that this wouldn’t have been a problem for him in the first place. It’s easier and more convenient for him to accuse the Washington Post of “yellow journalism” than it is for him to admit — even if only to himself — that he screwed up royally, that he was derelict in his duty, that he betrayed the trust that was placed in him, and that whatever damage his reputation may have suffered is largely his own fault.
March 4th, 2007 at 7:49 pmoboy; urine bottles at 10 paces. I gotta go with Dana as the better shot. Dr Urine will be pissing into the wind.
March 4th, 2007 at 11:32 pmWhy isn’t this Kiley guy fired?
March 5th, 2007 at 8:59 amI guess they photoshopped the ceiling falling down, and the rat feces, and the roaches. Then they drugged the vets into telling them what they wanted to hear. Maybe they weren’t vets at all, maybe the were actors!
Kiley has his Tin Foil Helmet on too tight!
March 5th, 2007 at 9:07 am[…] Lt. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley commanded Walter Reed from 2002-2004. Recent reports show that Kiley knew for years about the neglect and deplorable conditions at Walter Reed. In one stunning case, Kiley took no action when personally informed by the wife of Rep. Bill Young (R-FL) that a soldier was sleeping in his own urine. He continues to skirt responsibility for the neglect, calling the Washington Post’s Walter Reed investigation “yellow journalism at its worst.” […]
March 5th, 2007 at 12:32 pmI was affiliated with a medical army unit in Wuerzburg, Germany for ten years. What I learned during that time is that commanders are only trying to pad their resumes to move up the career ladder. That’s their whole mission in a nutshell.
The trick is not to deal with anything “hard” or controversial that can be passed off to your successor. Just do your time in that post, make yourself look good, and then move on and up.
It breeds incompetence. Army commanders are notoriously horrible and insensitive managers. It’s a broken system because of that.
