What I learned during that time is that commanders are only trying to pad their resumes to move up the career ladder. That's their whole mission in a nutshell. The trick is not to deal with anything "hard" or controversial that can be passed off to your successor. Just do your time in that post, make yourself look good, and then move on and up. It breeds incompetence. Army commanders are notoriously horrible and insensitive managers. It's a broken system because of that. It's easier and more convenient for him to accuse the Washington Post of "yellow journalism" than it is for him to admit -- even if only to himself -- that he screwed up royally, that he was derelict in his duty, that he betrayed the trust that was placed in him, and that whatever damage his reputation may have suffered is largely his own fault. We know the money went to Iraq and the war profiteers not our troops. But until Americans do care about our troops nothing will change. 4 soldiers died today while the US just talks and watch TV. No one really cares as more will die tomorrow that could have been saved.
