This is modern conservatism:»

Coulter “clarifies” her Edwards remark: “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.” Coulter also shares her views on Iran: “My thesis is that right-wingers think that Rudy Giuliani would immediately bomb Iran, and so we kind of like that. But I’d like to get that in writing before you make him our presidential nominee.”

  1. Angry One Says:

Whether the issue concerns gay Americans, 9/11, abortion, judicial appointments or political corruption, a seamless continuum of hate runs from today’s Republican Party through to its most extreme conservative proponents. And that means the GOP differs only in degree - not in kind - from the cartoonish and sometimes criminal likes of Ann Coulter, Fred Phelps or Eric Rudolph.

For more on the mainstreaming of right-wing rage, see:
“Coulter’s Slur and the Conservative Brand of Hate.”

  2. unbelievable Says:

Thanks for destroying Guiliani’s political career, Ann… I’m sure he’s mortified that a bigot like you just endorsed him.

  3. Toonguy Says:

Wow, Ann just cracks me up. She’s just like Dave Barry, except without the humility…and the humor.

If I wanted a smug, self-righteous person trying to tell me jokes, I’ll get Andrew Dice Clay.

Get real, woman, it’s not a joke if nobody laughs.

  4. Geoff Miller Says:

You’re just giving her what she wants: attention. Pointing out her ridiculous comments has never done much to her popularity. Why not concentrate on her enablers, the advertisers?

People like Ann Coulter made me a godless liberal. I refuse to be associated with any value system she endorses.

Frees me up on sunday morning. Thanks Ann!

  7. Laura Says:

Ann Coulter’s parents must have really neglected her as a child. What a pathetic, insecure woman.

  8. 20wordsorless Says:

This surely is not modern conservatism–it is Ann Coulter just being Ann Coulter.

  9. ruttiger Says:

i don’t understand why thinkprogress didn’t put the coulter quote under a massive headline like OUTRAGE or something like that. First of all, it is outrageous: it’s little better than her having called him a “n*gger” or a “kike”. And they cheered! Is there less outrage because of tacit homophobia at thinkprogress? Secondly, think of the advantages. Next time the right gets up in arms about some alleged verbal atrocity by some lefty (a la the Edwards bloggers or the stuff about wanting Cheney dead) this will come to mind, but only if it’s really played up now. I know what you’re thinking: it will be. But you’re wrong: it’ll be remembered only by those who want to remember it. After all, Coulter has said such things before — did that get mentioned during the recent flaps over Edwards’ bloggers and so on? No. Nor will this be remembered next time, if we continue to treat it with a sort of world-weary *sigh* rather than white-hot outrage. Scream about it — then it will be remembered. Why does our side underplay the amount of anger it has a right to? What possible advantage is there in that? Are they worried Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity will call them “sissies” for defending homosexuals?

    Comment by ruttiger — March 4, 2007 @ 1:38 pm

Excellent point. I completely agree with your post.

I see liberals tell other liberals that it isn’t nice to play hardball, that we should ignore these people so they will go away, and that we shouldn’t get angry. I’m not sure why either… Because, clearly, that hasn’t been working so well for us in this arena…

  12. Bluedog49 Says:

20words, the point is that when Ann is Ann, conservatives just love it. I’m sure you heard the round of applause and hearty laughter after she made her comment. By their reaction, I would have to say that her point of view must be common among today’s conservatives. It’s predictable. Some a-hole on a liberal blog makes a stray remark about Cheney and all we hear is that the left is “filled with hate.” Mention Ann Coulter’s vile remarks and it’s just Ann being Ann. Nothing to see here. And certainly no conclusions should be drawn about conservative values!

  13. Pudenda Shenanigans Says:

You godless liberals better not smear me. I know what America is about. I speak for America. You’re all just a bunch of fags anyway.

  14. tsoldrin Says:

Everytime there is something big the government wants to fold into a new cycle they give Ann Coulter a call and green light her saying something stupid. Time to do some digging to see what they are trying to hide.

  15. jeff Says:

I used to be best friends with a log cabin kweer who had all her books. This was b4 I was involved in politics and knew any better. I often wonder what he thinks now about this broad.
I think we’re heading toward a situation where over an over Republicans ask themselves “is this what my party does? Call prez candidates ‘homo’?”

  16. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid. Says:

This surely is not modern conservatism . . . . Comment by 20wordsorless

She was speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference. It’s pathetic what passes for humor among conservatives. Just call someone whatever horrible name you can dream up, then say “it was a joke.” What a bunch of jackasses (and I’m not joking).

  17. gummitch Says:

The more I cogitate on this, the more I think it proves how weak Coulter’s whole shtick is. I mean, seriously, “Johnny is a faggot!” What is she, 12?

What really is creepy, though, is how much adulation she’s given by some conservatives for being “outspoken” and “courageous” when most of what comes out of her mouth is just, well, it’s stupid. “Greenies all want to destroy civilization and light their rooms with candles.” She’s so far off the deep end that it’s sad no one has thrown her a nice big rock to hold onto.

  18. michael Says:

Wow! All these threads on my hero Ann Coulter? She’s practically taken over this blog! I’ve missed her on all the talk shows lately. Thanks to all the publicity you liberals have given her lately because of your hatred for this women she’ll probably be back on the circuit non stop! Thank you liberals!

  19. Leslie Says:

I just checked in here to see what people are saying about “you know who”. I won’t even mention her name. I’m sooo glad to see so few comments. The less attention we give her the better. That’s it for me!! Bye.

Ann Coulter’s comments suggest that she speaks for the Republican party, or at least the neocon wing. Other Republicans should be asked if they support her hate-speech.

  73. Bluestocking Says:

    COULTER: “C’mon, it was a joke…”

    ********************************

ENOUGH with the “joke” excuse already — there’s nothing even remotely funny or humorous about the spite and vitriol which comes out of this woman’s mouth on a regular basis. The only people laughing are the ones who secretly believe (or at least want to believe) that everything she says is true because it only serves to confirm their prejudices — which means, of course, that they don’t consider it a joke any more than she probably does. I don’t buy into the idea that she’s only doing this as a game or a stunt — and even if this were the case, the fact nevertheless remains that more than a few people take her seriously. Maybe this is partly because of the emphasis that all my psychology professors put on Freudian theory when I was in college, but I don’t believe that mean-spirited remarks like this are ever intended as anything other than a covert attack — a form of emotional guerrilla warfare. If Coulter truly had the guts that people credit her with having, she wouldn’t bother trying to “clarify” herself — she would admit publicly that this is how she genuinely feels and that she sees no need to take back or soften anything that she says. If she did that, she might actually have some degree of integrity — but the trite “it was a joke” excuse is nothing more than an attempt to avoid the consequences of her own remarks (and I thought conservatives believed in taking personal responsibility!). In short, she can dish it out but she can’t take it — and the fact that she resorts to the lame “it was a joke” excuse proves it.

  74. michael Says:

“there’s nothing even remotely funny or humorous about the spite and vitriol which comes out of this woman’s mouth on a regular basis”

I consider it hilarious! It’s nothing in comparison to the spite and vitriol leveled by you liberals against W & Cheney!

I hear the teenage kids at the park down the street make better vulgar remarks than Anne.

  82. Crazy Eddie Says:

Ya know Michael, I have read many of your posts. Not a one of them contains a fact, only question marks.

Why don’t you post facts Michael?

  83. Crazy Eddie Says:

I mean Michael, Anne must be pretty unattractive (mentally and physuically) if even a liberal won’t date her? Right?

  84. Crazy Eddie Says:

    Excuse me? -Michael

There is no excuse for you.

  85. God Says:

    Sorry about michael.

His mother couldn’t figure out which end of the hanger to use.

He comes by his stupity honestly.

  86. Uncle Ho Says:

    Only to Uncle Ho.

    comment by Mistress Z

Sounds kinky. Are you a dominatrix? sounds like it. no offense.

  92. Mistress Z Says:

You’ll just have to find a way to find out, Uncle Ho.

  93. Uncle Ho Says:

Mistress Z; I’m rather conventional sexually. straight, not into whips, clamps, handcuffs, etc.. That stuff is too far out for my taste. sorry to disappoint, but that’s life.

  94. Mistress Z Says:

So you did find out. :)

You feel something pulling on your leg…?

  95. Mistress Z Says:

Sorry to mess with you, Uncle Ho. It’s been a long week.

  96. Uncle Ho Says:

    It’s been a long week.

Tell me about it. I’ve had a basketful of stuff for the last several days too. Saturday work(slammed), midweek company meeting & not getting home until late, and a wedding/reception out of town yesterday.

  97. Zooey Says:

    I can be a real ass sometimes. :}

  98. Uncle Ho Says:

Zooey; wanna take a guess how I can be at times?

  99. God Says:

I can only imagine sweetness, unicorns, rainbows, and a boonie hat.
And probably a hell of a temper.

  100. Zooey Says:

Oops, sorry, that last one was me. Damn, I always out myself. :)

  101. Uncle Ho Says:

God; my hell of a temper probably came from my tour of duty with the marines. I have a really baaaad sense of humor about getting shot at. Pisses me off to no end.

  102. Uncle Ho Says:

Tis the bewitching hour and I will turn into something if I don’t go to bed. g’night all

  103. Zooey Says:

Don’t blame you one bit, Uncle Ho.
    You have good reason.

I need to stop impersonating God, I’m gonna get struck by lightning.

  104. William M. Simms Says:

This broad is completely out there. Her daddy may have been a “union buster” but apparently didn’t spend much time teaching Ms. F’ing Smartmouth much of anything at all. Things like “cooth” and “decorum” weren’t part of the social circles @ Cornell or Mich.Law. You can tell she thinks her “doo-doo” don’t stink..probably went to Serendipity for dessert every saturday pm, huh. Stuck up bitch. Look at the close of her initial J. Edwards remark and you’ll see the excessively intelligent lil’ brat trying to get daddy’s attention(2 no avail). The one that thinks she’s just so damn smart and witty. Probably got a right-wing female shock jock deal ready to roll with Murdoch any second…crazy like fox dis beesh. Like i tell all m’boys “personality counts 4 a lot”..She’s actually kinda’ fiiii-nnne, but alas nothing attractive b/t those ears i’m afraid. —”daddy, would those be chin-nuts?”…wms07

  105. Leslie Says:

Oh no, people. PLEASE, PLEASE, go to another blog and discuss something that really matters. I’m so disappointed to see so many additional posts here! This michael is just goading you. Let him scream into the wind.

  106. Michael Fistenass Says:

She needs to practice what she preaches, go home and fix me a g!d!mned turkey pot pie and press my clothes while I have a beer and watch the game. Doesn’t she understand that in the Bible and in Conservative politics, there is no place for a woman other than to stay home, do housework, and get barefoot and pregnant. She’s a walking hypocrite. The bible and the Koran have something in common…they both basically state that women are $h!t so Ann must really be an Atheist after all. Politics ain’ta no place for a woman. Now I must return to porking of my sister!
