Our national media embarrassment was again on full display on Friday. Both MSNBC and Fox News devoted more coverage to Anna Nicole Smith — three weeks after her death on Feb. 8 — than they did to the multiple developments involving the neglect and deplorable conditions at Walter Reed military hospital.
The most lop-sided coverage by far was aired by Fox News, which featured only 10 references to Walter Reed compared to 121 of Anna Nicole — roughly 12 times the coverage. MSNBC featured 84 references to Walter Reed and 96 to Anna Nicole.
ThinkProgress compiled a reel of lowlights from Friday’s coverage. Watch it:
NETWORK ANNA NICOLE WALTER REED FOX NEWS 121 10 MSNBC 96 84 CNN 40 53
If you want to write CNN and thank them for their more balanced coverage, the feedback form is HERE.

Don’t be fooled by the name: Fox “News” is NOT a news station. It is only entertainment. The FCC should make them change the name as it is false advertising …etc.

March 5th, 2007 at 10:12 amO’Really: “I never had sex with that woman… or, well, at least not in person…”
The FOX channel was created by Roger Ailes to be a 24-7 Republican party propaganda distribution mechanism. It should be treated as campaign spending and any money spent by corporations on advertizing should count as political contributions.
March 5th, 2007 at 10:14 amNo surprise there. Fox News hates the troops.
March 5th, 2007 at 10:17 amSupport our Ho’s!
March 5th, 2007 at 10:20 amWell, as Brit Hume said, the problem with the Walter Reed revelations were that they made the Bush administration look bad.
So Fox put those world-famous gazungas on the loop and hoped no-one would notice the real news.
March 5th, 2007 at 10:22 amGhouls.
March 5th, 2007 at 10:24 am#1 Wholeheartedly agree - Fox has very little to do with credible, truthful news and, instead, has become a GOP propaganda spin agency. People have patently rejected Faux News and their viewership is waning drastically because they’ve been outed for the fraudulent charlatans which they are. This is precisely why they’ve copied John Stewart and added a comedy show! I suspect that this is an attempt to blur the lines of reality and truth in broadcasting when subsequent charges are brought against them for fraudulent broadcasting of the news.
The real fact of the matter is that Fox News has now become the “poster child” for the total exclipse of the 24 hour news channels of the mainstream media.
Everyone has a computer and realizes that the television will no longer be the primary source of news and truth any longer; internet news brings news to people AT LEAST 24 hours sooner than television news so when people finally see something they already know the truth about on television, it’s either a “ho hum - turn the channel” or an outing of the news agency for obvious propaganda in the face of the facts which have already been acquired and researched by the reader on the internet. Egg on the Face - is a huge understatement for the complicit MSM these days.
The mainstream media, aka political puppetry, is becoming totally irrelevant and is being eclipsed by the internet as a source of valid, truthful information. The old ritual of turning on the morning news in one’s home has been totally removed from the repertoire of most educated individuals.
Why spend precious time listening to obvious “spin”, overt propaganda, or “stale news”?? It’s a no brainer that news anchors will be out looking for other employment within a few short years.
Time marches on and enlightenment of the masses continues - mainstream news (newspapers are almost extinct at this point and are folding all across the nation) will become a total albatross soon - and take the air-headed sycophants who are doing nothing more than prostituting themselves for a piece of the gravy train along with them.
March 5th, 2007 at 10:25 amThis should come as no surprise.
March 5th, 2007 at 10:27 amFox is merely a masquerade for the White House propaganda machine.
MSNBC has a few exceptions to the preference for sensationalistic coverage of news.
CNN is not guilt free — it simply looks better by comparison.
On my honeymoon, I noticed that this ANS debacle was showed on television more than news that should have been considered important. I truly know that morality no longer exist within our society. We treat an individual who blatantly committed fornication, adultery and was a drug addict as an ambassador. Don’t expect her to receive approval from God during the White Throne of Judgement.

March 5th, 2007 at 10:38 amI took the opportunity to praise CNN for their coverage of the Walter Reed scandal, but I threw in a couple of things. Glen Beck should be fired and CNN should stop morphing into Fox . The Turner years were the pinacle years for this program. Even Wolf Blitzer is pandering to the right for ratings. The more this occurs by anchors on CNN, the less we moderates will tune in to their “truthiness”.

March 5th, 2007 at 11:23 amAs the world watches our troops die in Iraq/Afghan then injured troops come home to live with mice/roaches only to die from infections from the bites received the their open wounds Americans just change the channel. White House looks the other way as they use the money for Iraq/ war profiteers that was to go to our injured troops. Notice the Military General kiley said it wasn’t bad and reporters shouldn’t have reported it. Yet none of the people turning their backs would live in those dirty conditions themselves. Fox news puts Anna Nicole in headlines so the White House wont have a problem continueing their plan. Americans are more concerned about Hillary being to smart and Obama being black then to care about the idiot President killing our kids. Even Military marches are against those running for office while our troops are dying everyday. The mission is to destroy the Dems so Republicans can continue and STAY THE COURSE. Bush/Cheney/Rove were right to get Americans to follow everything they say even when it means killing our troops in the invasion and at home.

Do you believe that a person can repent to god and not have a priest of whatever around? 1) You may not like Daryll’s beliefs, but making raunchy sexual comments about his wife are out of line.
2) Telling someone here to “keep out of my way. got it??” is a pretty good way to guarantee that they won’t. And I won’t either.
For the record, I don’t share any of Daryll’s religious beliefs and I think he’s a hypocrite when he starts spouting off about morality. But, he doesn’t say anything that makes me angry. Certainly not angry enough for me to be verbally abusive towards him and his wife.
March 5th, 2007 at 11:55 amTake a clue from this. The reason Fox has ignored this story is not simply that they are a biased network, but that they realize that this makes clear a major feature of the Bush/Neocon/conservative philosophy — the fact that they do not really believe that government should provide social services, even to soldiers. It is Hurricane Katrina for the military. What this story and the Katrina story have in common is that they show that Bush and his ilk simply do not believe that government should govern on behalf of anyone but the plutocracy.

Now the lead story on cnn.com is walter reed but the fact that they put this poor woman’s face on (who was killed and dismembered) is atrocious journalism.
When is this country going to wake up and realize that the mainstream media is complicit by silence. And this administration is literally getting away with murder.

March 5th, 2007 at 3:21 pmOne of the most delicious moments in life is when a person can stumble upon a message forum to read the unhinged comments of liberal retards. It’s pure ecstasy to read the rants of individuals who despise one of the most balanced newscast in the history of television.
Fox news has done more to rile the rank and file liberal retard… and to my hearts content.
The disease of liberalism has been exposed with a bright shining light. Thank God for Fox… if it weren’t for Fox, this country would be goose stepping to the fourth Reich.
Keep up the great work Fox… and continue to expose these hypocritical liberal pukes for what they are.

Yes, I knew in December that ANS would die in February. So I planted those posts in order to come back in March and say “But the left did it tooâ€.
Gerald Ford. You were talking about Gerald Ford. Remember?
March 5th, 2007 at 3:51 pmAll you liberal weenies are just upset that Anna Nicole Smith stole your thunder. No one wants to hear you complain about the War In Iraq or how the war vets are alledgedly being treated at Walter Reed. Anna Nicole Smith’s death proved one thing: Liberals are not compassionate, like they say they are, or else they would’ve promoted more discussion of her death. Instead, they just want to attack President Bush all day, all night. I’m sorry but Fox News took a day off to air something with compassion, not baseless insults about our Great Commander In Chief.
March 5th, 2007 at 3:57 pmHa! Take that Liberals!

Attaboy! Way to keep your chin up while your little right-wing world comes crashing down around you. It was fun though, wasn’t it?

I’m trying to follow you, Fred, but it’s not easy. You say Fox News is the compassionate one, because they stuck with the Anna Nicole Smith story, rather than air some trivial stuff about our soldiers being killed and maimed needlessly in Bush’s war or being neglected in a hospital that is understaffed and left in disrepair?
I guess “compassion” doesn’t mean what I thought it did.

You’re in pretty bad shape, Bob, if you think Fox is any sort of news.
Oh yeah, if you ever need in help — your house gets blown away, or a mudslide wipes out everything you ever had — call a neo-con.
Good luck.
March 5th, 2007 at 4:11 pmFOX knows what they are doing. The sad thing is that there is a market for this crap. Look at their TV shows.
March 5th, 2007 at 4:17 pmFox News simply caters to what their viewers WANT to see. It is this methodology that has made them the #1 cable news channel in nation.
Unfortunately, in this sick society, more people care about tabloid ANS garbage than about the poor medical reception soldiers are getting at Walter Reed. The ANS bubble is slowly fizzling out.
March 5th, 2007 at 4:28 pmJust goes to show where Fox’s priorities really lie, doesn’t it?
Now THIS, Lt. General Kiley, is a real example of what “yellow journalism” looks like — if one can even really call it “journalism”…
March 5th, 2007 at 4:35 pmThe only reason fox is number one in ratings is because its a broadcast station, were as CNN is cable/satilite only. Well it also doesn’t help Fox catering to all the white trash Wal-mart sheep out there.
March 5th, 2007 at 4:41 pmRupert and the FAKE NEWS NETWORK are all about ratings, and pushing a right wing agenda. The tragedy is that there are still so many people in this country who still believe that those morons actually deliver real news.

March 5th, 2007 at 5:23 pmBTW: Don’t feed the Trolls. They don’t like this story so they are trying to bait you off the topic. Then anyone ‘reasonable’ visiting here will just see loads of trash and it ruins THIS coverage of the story, much like ANS shoved out the abuse of veterans story.
Don’t Argue With a Troll! They don’t really believe any of the crap the spout; it’s just to bait you to draw attention from the article.
I say, to anyone, GO back and re-read the story! Fox news sacked the vet abuse story.
fox news sucks. i talk about them on my blog all the time at lowerdown.com just click on fox news on the categories. they always do stupid crap like this. most everything they do is totally biased too.
March 5th, 2007 at 6:30 pmit’s funny that one article like this can spur so much outrage from the left, when the right has been pointing out news miscoverage for years from every other left-winged news source. check out the research, it’s there.
anna nicole peaked a lot of interest to the american public. news is delivered according to the news they want to hear. what do we get? more anna nicole on the most popular news network on cable tv. the real solution is to get people caring about the real issues here. good luck with that one…
March 5th, 2007 at 7:01 pmimri,

March 5th, 2007 at 9:18 pmI saw an interview on the Walter Reed scandal on Fox News. There wasn’t anything much on Anna this morning and early afternoon on Fox News. What was suprising is that CNN didn’t really do in dept reporting on the hearing, now I missed Blitzers show and he has been on top of the story, but every other show skimmed it today. MSNBC was more into the Hearing. The main stories today were the Bus Crash and other war news. Plus, the Ann Coulter and Bill Maher stuff. I guess I do understand the point of this article though. More news is focused on Anna Nicole. Well having said that I think Anna Nicole is dying down after the funeral. Fox News streams some hearing on Anna in the bahamas on the web and focuses on news now.
March 5th, 2007 at 9:21 pmI guess this the False News Channel’s way of supporting the troops.

March 5th, 2007 at 10:49 pmNice work, Daryll. Your arrogant religious judgement and commentary on ANS has nearly entirely derailed the thread and its subject. Fox “News” would be proud. Need I remind you of another Biblical saying: “Judge not lest ye be judged”. You may hide behind your Bible but the fact of the matter is you made a judgement call on Smith’s soul and practically danced with joy over the notion of her in eternal torment. Way to go.
Has it only NOW become obvious to everyone that Fox is and always has been a right-wing apologist machine? Not at the service of the White House, but in service to Rupert Murdoch and his ilk. Thanks to Fox, the Neoconservatives hardly need to spend any of their own money on campaign smears and obfuscation. Congrats to Fox for actively supporting a political agenda openly determined to send the United States backwards through time and space to the Dark Ages. Rewritten history, deliberate smears of people who stand up and question, half-baked efforts to appear “fair and balanced”, anti-science, and worse are their legacy. Calvin would be proud.

March 6th, 2007 at 12:57 amI don’t understand Christians who use the bible to condemn everything. The 1st commandment states, “I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me.” Yet Christians worship Christ, who is in effect a false idol. Not only that, they have statues and images of Christ everywhere.
March 6th, 2007 at 1:12 amFred: Ha ha, that’s pretty funny. Irony at it’s finest. Tell me, just HOW is it more compassionate to keep dragging ANS through the mud even after she’s dead? Sounds alot more like cruelty and sensationalism to me, and compassion doesn’t enter into it at all. And your cutsie line about the “alleged” treatment of the troops wounded in W’s war, let me ask you this: Do generals leave their positions and get sacked over “alleged” situations? Hardly. Nice try, but laughable. Thanks for the laugh, though, I needed it.

That stumble must have caused some serious brain damage. Please get that checked out. Or were you just kidding? Because Fox News is where the Nazis hang out. And Nazis executed the brain damaged first.
So please get your head over to Walter Reed where they take brain injuries very seriously. Well they might. Eventually.
Funny, you see all these comments against Fox News, makes you wonder who exactly is watching this or if we’ve just got a thread of doublestandards.

April 4th, 2007 at 6:41 pm[…] Think Progress has a nice comparison of coverage of Anna Nicole Smith and the Walter Reed Medical scandal. It represents one day, last friday. According to them, MSNBC covered Anna Nicole 96 times and Walter Reed 84. CNN did better on balance — 40 Anna Nicole to 53 Walter Reed. FOX News (surprise, surprise) did a lousy job with 121 Anna Nicole stories to just 10 Walter Reed.
