Hagel Suggests Possibility Of Bush Impeachment: ‘He’s Not Accountable Anymore’»

hagelAccording to a new report in Esquire magazine, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) has suggested that Congress may consider the impeachment of President Bush before his term ends:

“The president says, ‘I don’t care.’ He’s not accountable anymore,” Hagel says, measuring his words by the syllable and his syllables almost by the letter. “He’s not accountable anymore, which isn’t totally true. You can impeach him, and before this is over, you might see calls for his impeachment. I don’t know. It depends how this goes.”

The conversation beaches itself for a moment on that word — impeachment — spoken by a conservative Republican from a safe Senate seat in a reddish state. It’s barely even whispered among the serious set in Washington, and it rings like a gong in the middle of the sentence, even though it flowed quite naturally out of the conversation he was having about how everybody had abandoned their responsibility to the country, and now there was a war going bad because of it.

Hagel isn’t the only one frustrated. The desire for more accountability over Bush has led to increasing calls for impeachment from the Washington State legislature, the mayor of Salt Lake City, and town hall meetings in Vermont.

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) said pushing for impeachment would be counterproductive because it would break off efforts to recruit conservative support for changing the course of the war in Iraq. “We’re trying to get [conservatives] to vote against the war. They’re coming around. You don’t hear them singing the virtues of George Bush like they used to. But nothing will turn this into a partisan lockdown faster than impeachment.” Inslee added, “Ending the war is what’s important now.”

Digg It!

Face it folks, impeaching Bush is the ONLY hope for the GOP. He is an anchor around all of their necks, and i’m not just talking the next presidential election. He will hurt them in the House, Senate, and Prez spots on the ballot.

A good game plan is to swap out Cheney with someone having leadership skills and makes their party look good. Next, impeach Boy-George, and put this new guy in place and let him end the war in Iraq. Holy-Shit, what would Democrats do?

Seriously, if they put anyone with a brian in the Whitehouse who ends the war, the air goes out of the Democratic ballons.

In fact, most of the time, I’m proud that I voted for him.

My only concern with Mr. Hagel is that he says things that people like to hear, but he rarely acts.

Although I realize that even setting up a discussion on controversial topics these days is a feat in and of itself, I just wish that he would take more action,

  36. Bluestocking Says:

The only question I would ask Hagel is…when has Bush ever been accountable?!? Where has Hagel been for the last five-odd years? For myself, I find it difficult if not outright impossible to think of one single incident in which Bush clearly and sincerely has accepted responsibility for something which has gone wrong — which is the true hallmark of accountability, since it’s easy to take credit when things go right. He talks a lot about being “The Decider” — but all too often, when the s**t has really hit the fan, Bush has passed the buck and made every effort either to pin the blame on someone else or to suggest that nobody can really be blamed because “nobody could have anticipated etc., etc.”

We don’t have the votes for impeachment NOR conviction. Pretending does not make it so. Acting like this is Speaker Pelosi’s fault is counter-productive. Unless you work for the Bushcoviks.

  53. Gregor Samsa Says:

More food for thought from the Esquire article:

Gradually, though, Chuck moved closer to [his brother] Tom’s view of Vietnam. It was the tapes that did it, the release of recordings of Lyndon Johnson’s anguished phone calls to Richard Russell in which he tells Russell that he knows the war cannot be won. The calls were recorded two years before the Hagels went to Vietnam.

“To know that, and to continue to send kids into that meat grinder…” says Chuck Hagel, sitting in an office in a building named after Richard Russell, an office across the hall from the one out of which Lyndon Johnson once ran the Senate. It seems impolite to ask him, as his sentence fades away and he shakes the voices of Johnson and Russell out of his head, whether we are still talking completely about the past.

All those people were sent to kill and die in a war the policy makers knew could not be won.

Thirty years later, history repeats itself and all the Bush personality cult followers come here to express their support for another meat grinder…

Thank you for your courage, Chuck Hagel. For too long, “impeachment” has been been a dirty little word in this country. Every time a Senator says “impeachment,” it’s a step in the right direction.

The only way to stop his spiral is to distance himself from the Pres.’s Iraq policy; so he’ll either forget about running for Pres., or he’ll soon be calling for Bush’s impeachment as well. This escalation will either demonstrably succeed or fail by about July, but knowing McCain, he’ll try to wring every last ounce of political leverage from his current position before suddenly being against the war all along.

  85. Paul in LA Says:

“Paul, while I hear what you are saying how do we know we don’t have the vote’s when they havent had any investigation’s and have taken it off the table since the moment they got in”

Sharon, a primary duty of a House leader is to be able to count the votes.

Unless the R start the impeachment of their own president, it’s just not politically possible to have that process apply. It is FAR too weak of a process to support dividing the Congress again. We need to out the criminals and get them out of their illegally-held seats in our Congress and our White House (but that by resignation due to scandal, aka public education).

….If we the people demand it and there is suffecient backing of the people

IF there is sufficient CHANGE of R and D votes for impeachment, that’s a different matter. But it is simple logic to see that EITHER they could run the incredible risk of an impeachment fiasco, or they can do what they should, which is to USE THE PEN OF CONGRESS, and write Bushco’s crimes into EVIDENCE (instead of all the media-reported HEARSAY we’re all pissed off about, in addition to the carnage).

“If they refuse to do this I am jumping ship and going to raise hell with starting up a third party and putting all this bunch out”

Clearly you aren’t paying attention: It’s the VOTE-FRAUD, Stupid.

We don’t HAVE legal elections. We have to fight to get them back. So your third party concept will never get off the ground. Work in your state to restore legal voting!

“They work for us dammit and I am mad as hell.”–Sharon

I’m sure you are, but you’re blaming the wrong people.

As for ‘working for the people,’ yes they do, but that still doesn’t change the vote count. Too much risk; too much chance that the SCOTUS will simply say that impeachment during time of war is unconstitutional. You really have to go back and measure what we’re up against, and then come down on the side of the FIRST WOMAN TO BECOME SPEAKER, whose House has convinced so far 17 R to crossover, and whose House has started writing the EVIDENCE that AG Gonzales has committed fundamental acts of GRAFT that can ‘Meese’ him right out of a job.

Remember: Pelosi became minority leader when she led SIXTY PERCENT of House Dems to vote NAY on the Iraq Resolution.

Have a little faith and work your ass off.

Senator Reid said we had I believe it was 6 or 7 crossovers in the Senate on the Iraq War. It may be more than that, but most of that party is corrupt, complicit, and many of them are about to be indicted (for which reason the clutch of OTHER Fitzgeralds were fired).

While your faith in the current political processes is commendable, there are a couple of misconceptions I’d like to address.

First, third parties don’t have to win seats to be successful. Frequently in American history, 3rd parties have shaped the debate and changed the course of the two major parties. That alone has been sufficient to enact the proposals put forth by the 3rd party.

Next, the impeachment clause in the Constitution is not restricted to peacetime. If a sitting President could not be impeached during war, there would be absolutely nothing to prevent a President from totally scrapping the Constitution and becoming a Dictator for life, merely by declaring war on some country or another. Congress is supposed to prevent that from happening by utilizing the impeachment process.

I say let the Democratic controlled Congress bring out all the evidence into the limelight. Even Corporate Media cannot ignore impeachment hearings. Those hearings will involve just a handful of Representatives. Meanwhile the House can go about its business of changing the course of the war through the budget process.

Get the crimes of this Administration out there, in black and white, on the Front Pages of Newspapers across the country for everyone to see. Then “count the votes” in the Senate. I know causing the deaths of nearly 3/4 of a million innocent people who don’t speak English and have a darker complexion is not as sexy as semen stains on a blue dress, but, to me, violating the Constitution and the laws of the United States is a bit more serious an offense than merely catching someone with his pants down.

  88. Roger_Roger Says:

While I agree that if there is evidence that Bush intentionally lied about the evidence for Iraq that he showed congress he should be impeached. Furthermore, I see no reason that the majority party in both houses can’t investigate that claima and vote no this week to the Iraq war money bill in front of them end the war. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) doesn’t seem to understand the uphill battle he will have if he truly wants to end this war.

TP reports that Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) said: “We’re trying to get [conservatives] to vote against the war. They’re coming around. You don’t hear them singing the virtues of George Bush like they used to. But nothing will turn this into a partisan lockdown faster than impeachment.” Inslee added, “Ending the war is what’s important now.”

While I appreciate a congressmen like this that is actually working towards what he campaigns on, his efforts to recruit conservatives is a bit forward thinking for now. Maybe he should focus on his own parties interest in Ending this war. Pelosi and Reid are currently recruiting Dems to support the war and vote yes to the new Iraq War money bill that would support and extend this war. Maybe Inslee should start by getting his own party behind him and then work on those conservatives that may come around? Just a suggestion for him anyways.

    IMPEACH

We the people have the power — and the responsibility — to remove executives who transgress not just the law, but the rule of law.

The oaths that the President and Vice President take binds them to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” The failure to do so forms a sound basis for articles of impeachment.

The President and Vice President have failed to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution” in the following ways:

    1. They have manipulated intelligence and misled the country to justify an immoral, unjust, and unnecessary preemptive war in Iraq.

    2. They have directed the government to engage in domestic spying without warrants, in direct contravention of U.S. law.

    3. They have conspired to commit the torture of prisoners, in violation of the Federal Torture Act and the Geneva Convention.

    4. They have ordered the indefinite detention without legal counsel, without charges and without the opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention — all in violation of U.S. law and the Bill of Rights.

When strong evidence exists of the most serious crimes, we must use impeachment — or lose the ability of the legislative branch to compel the executive branch to obey the law.

    George Bush
has led our country to a constitutional crisis, and it is our responsibility to remove him from office.

Bush has a 30% approval rating right now. He doesn’t care. He has had his own agenda and always has ever since he’s been in office. He’s used the national crisis hysteria of 9/11 to gather support for his war in Iraq which never produced any weapons of Mass Destruction (while North Korea has) meanwhile our US dollar has fallen (maybe due a large defense bill), and his claims at reducing a deficit are simply false. Our defense bill is roughly 500 billion a year, and we’re pumping more money into external causes for his administrations oil agenda rather than into domestic reform, where it belongs.

Lets restore our national Moral authority and image to the world and impeach Bush, bringing an end to Black Sites, Extraordinary Renditions, and Unlawful Combatant status and try these terrorists while maintaining there human rights!

If any one them is true they are a good reason to impeach him.

Besides, Cheney is the real brains. Bush is a bumbling fool. Taking Cheney away would not only remove half of Bushes brain, it would leave him with no one to pardon him.

However, we need to be careful. The U.S. (and the world) is in a very precarious position right now. We need to focus on reducing violence and solving environmental issues. We shouldn’t let prosecuting Bush and his gang side track us. We can take of the prosecutions after Bush is no longer president. However, investigating them could make them more cooperative and start us back on the right track.

On the other hand, I’m not sure if the world can take 21 more months of Bush.

  114. Roger_Roger Says:

    1. They have manipulated intelligence and misled the country to justify an immoral, unjust, and unnecessary preemptive war in Iraq.

If they ever find solid evidence to back this claim, I agree with you and he should not only be impeached, but imprisoned. Currently this is simply a theory backed by nothing but opinion.

    2. They have directed the government to engage in domestic spying without warrants, in direct contravention of U.S. law.

I completely agree that is was uncalled for and probably illegal. Can you honestly impeach a president for it though? Seems like it would fall short of that.

    3. They have conspired to commit the torture of prisoners, in violation of the Federal Torture Act and the Geneva Convention.

I highly doubt the Dems would try to impeach a president to treating terrorists badly. That wouldn’t look to good in the publics eye. This issue isn’t that important to anyone outside of far left circles. I do agree that torture is a horrible way to gather intel however and really serves no purpose. It is also very illegal and he probably should be investigated and impeached for it. It won’t happen however.

    4. They have ordered the indefinite detention without legal counsel, without charges and without the opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention — all in violation of U.S. law and the Bill of Rights.

Again, trying to impeach a president to detaining terrorists is not going to happen. While I agree this was incorrect, I don’t agree that it merits impeachment. Torture certainly merits impecahment however.

I just think it is sad and frustrating to see the Democrats be put into the majority with a clear mandate to stop by whatever means necessary the war in Iraq. They haven’t been the minority so long that they forgot the power of those in charge. This is nothing like the Clinton fiasco. That was an abuse of Congress’s power. Most of the country still favored Clinton and saw the impeachment for what it was. The same cannot be said about Bush. Most of the country is against him and everything he stands for. He and his Vice President both should be impeached for what they have done to this nation in our names. They have no shame and clearly have never shown the least inclination to play well with others, which the office of the President is pretty much required to do. He continues to do pretty much what ever he wants while thumbing his nose at Congress when they try to do their Constitutional duty and apply oversight to the Executive Branch. Bush/Cheney are all about power. They’ve never shown any talent towards actually governing the country. They just like to spend other people’s money and bully the rest of the world to get what they want. Congress needs to impeach Bush/Cheney. If they spent a moment thinking about what it is the people said in November, then they’ve spent too much time. It was pretty clear what we want and we want it now. We want our freedom and our country back.

  126. Roger_Roger Says:

    To Debbie and Shadow,

Currently the only real charge I can see that is an impeachable one is the idea that Bush/Cheney knew beforehand that the evidence presented to Congress was no true. IF congress could find proof in this regard, they certainly should be impeached and imprisoned for life.

Debbie, to simply say we should impeach them for not playing nice and for doing a really bad job isn’t proper. It isn’t even valid. Furthermore, you can’t impeach someone because or your opinion of what happened. You still need solid evidence. To date, I have never heard anything from anyone that is solid evidence that Bush and Cheney knew the evidence provided to congress was faulty beforehand.

I have heard that the same evidence was presented to Bush, Congress, England, and even the UN. Now we know today that the intel was in fact faulty. What we don’t know is the idea that anyone knew it was faulty beforehand. Furthermore, this evidence was CIA evidence. If anyone knew of problems, the best guess would be someone from the CIA as it was their intel. I can only assume that England, Congress members, and the UN took this intel and studied it thoroughly. I have to assume that they attempted to verify it the best they could and also attempt to see if any of it proved false. Your dems in congress that voted yes almost had to of looked into this stuff with a fine tooth comb. By voting yes, the evidence had to look pretty solid. With all these different governments and all the different congress members looking into how valid the evidence was, you would think they would have found evidence at the time showing Bush/Cheney intentionally made up evidence. How could these 2 clowns fool the entire world? Honestly, really think about that one because it doesn’t seem even kinda plausible to me.

With that said, we certainly should re investigate Bush and Cheney as should the World one more time. Currently, we have found nothing that shows they knew the intel was faulty beforehand but it wouldn’t hurt to make sure that is true. In the end, if they somehow find out their initial research was wrong and Bush/Cheney did in fact make up intel we should impeach and imprison them.

just stop with the laughable rhetoric already though. We don’t impeach people we don’t like. We need to prove they lied and we need to have solid evidence to back it up.

Clintons impeachment was a good example. It was a complete waste of time, effort, and tax payer money. In reality, they impeached him because they didn’t like him just like you want to do against Bush. The difference was they had rock solid evidence that he lied under oath. SO, if you want to impeach, go find some rock solid proof.

The Civil War in Iraq has many more than simply 2 sides; now with different Shia factions fighting each other. At the same time we seem to have forgotten that a President and VP are voted into office to support our way of life and the constitution that insures it: I don’t think anyone (except maybe Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Jack Abrhamoff, John McCain, and other Bush supporters) can claim to see any type of this effort, just look at Katrina, milatary support, the environment, and the many practices against bettering such. My friends, our nation deserves honest, strong, and loyal leadership that benefits everyone of us, no matter our gender, creed, or religion. The argument that to initiate impeachment proceedings against your president would widen the political divisions within America is true, but it ignores the fact that the polarisation of American society has already occurred and is increasing as time progresses. At stake here is not just the issue of whether this President has acted criminally or in a way that brings disrepute to the office, of even greater importance is the legacy and legal precedent he leaves behind. Presidents can/have/are and will look to those who preceded them to claim justification for their actions and decisions. The most dangerous actions that Bush has taken have been those that have weakened the power of Congress and the Law over the Presidency, all with the collusion of a compliant legislature and a comatose and fearful electorate. The Presidency under Bush is more imperial in nature than ever before. If Bush is not brought to account then his legacy to future Presidents stands. For those who are against impeachment for the sake of unity are gambling (whether they realise it or not) that George W. Bush is the absolute rock bottom worst President that could ever hold the office and that future generations will never make the same mistake as the ones that live today have and that’s a gamble that in time they will loose and America’s Democracy will die.

Today, I ask the people of America to take back the power that a few small men have taken for themselves.
Today, I ask for the removal of Dick Cheney and George Bush from office, before they can do any more damage to the Constitution of the United States of America; before they can do any more damage to the good standing of America in the eyes of the world.
Today, I call upon Congress to issue an apology to the people of Iraq and to begin proceedings for reparations for war damage to their country.
Today, I call on call upon all peoples and countries of good will to help the people of Iraq achieve peace in their country and the region.
Today, I call upon the people of America to make fundamental changes to the Constitution, to write into law a set of rules that will never let a candidate be elected because of the amount of money he can raise.
Today, I call on Congress and the House to put into effect a bill to publicly fund the elections of both houses and the office of the Presidency. Corruption, greed, graft and lobbying should never again be allowed to defile our Constitution, our Institutions and our way of governing ourselves.
There are many good and true men and women who are called to serve in our Government. But they have to swim in the cesspool of corruption, graft and greed that has been allowed to overtake our Institutions. In what other country can a Senator slip in an earmark to a bill, which no one has seen, has never debated and is voted into law? This practice should stop now, today.
Today, there is much talk of Congressional oversight, but who oversees the overseers? Do the members of the Senate and the House answer to the people that they supposedly represent? Or do the lobbyist and special interests have the final say, by pouring money into the Senator’s pet projects? They say that money talks, and in our Institutions, it silences everyone. This too must stop, today.
I began this speech by saying; today, I am committing political suicide. This is true for every good man or woman who runs for Congress or the House. It is political suicide to say anything against the powerful lobbies and special interests that have a choke hold on our members of parliament.
