Wilson Responds: Bush And Cheney Must Explain Why They Outed My Wife

Ambassador Joseph Wilson offered his first response to the Scooter Libby verdict during a conference call today.

“Now that this trial is over,” Wilson said, “the president and the vice president owe the country a much broader explanation of their own actions.” Wilson called on them both to release the transcripts of their discussions with Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, and called on Bush specifically to apologize for overseeing the outing of his wife:

I also learned today that the president was quoted as saying that he was sorry for Mr. Libby and his family. I wish that he would express his sorrow for what has happened to my wife, whose career was destroyed as a consequence of this, and also to the service people of this country who are fighting in a war that now very clearly was justified by lies and disinformation.

Wilson said he hoped the verdict would teach Libby and other U.S. officials a lesson, that “you don’t abuse the public trust engaging in personal vendettas.” But he said he feared that “they will learn the lesson that several of them apparently learned after Watergate — not the lesson of not abusing power, but rather the lesson…that they should’ve destroyed the tapes.”

Transcript:

WILSON: Well, let me begin by saying that I would hope that Mr. Libby and all other officials in the U.S. government would draw the right lesson from this, and the right lesson to learn from this is you don’t abuse the public trust engaging in personal vendettas. What I probably fear most of all is that they will learn the lesson that several of them apparently learned after Watergate — not the lesson of not abusing power, but rather the lesson that they seemed to have learned is that they should’ve destroyed the tapes. That is the wrong lesson in our democracy to take away from it. So, if they learn the right lesson from it, that would be all to the good for the way that we function as a government.

I have said for quite a while, as you know, that I believe Mr. Rove was involved up to his eyeballs. That became clear when it was made public that Mr. Rove was in fact the source of the compromise of my wife’s identity to Matt Cooper. I’m not going to second-guess decisions that were made by the prosecution. We do have a civil suit in place that hopefully will address some of these larger issues.

I do believe that now that this trial is over, that the president and the vice president owe the country a much broader explanation of their own actions at this time. The president, of course, at one time said that anybody who engaged in this would be fired. Mr. Rove is still on the payroll. So I would, as a start, I would argue — I would ask the president and the vice president to release the transcripts of their interviews with the prosecutor, so as to be able to reassure the American public that they were not — that there is not a cloud over the offices of either of them. I think that would be a good start.

Shrub, President Cheney, Libby, Rove, and all their henchmen are traitors who sacrificed national security and potentially many lives by disclosing the identity of a clandestine agent in an act of petty political payback designed to hide the administration’s fraudulent case for war with Iraq. All should be removed from their positions and prosecuted. I hope the Wilsons enjoy what small amount of vindication this verdict may bring them.

  11. rachel rj kinnardi says:

    Civilization & War Rant

Bush is not responsible for the war in Iraq. Al Gore said during his campaign against Bush II that Bush I should have finished the job; and we never tire of pretending these days that the Clinton-Gore government was not attacking Iraq…. they were, regularly and lethally. War is inherent to civilization; and that is why we’ll have more and more of it, and why it will eventually percolate from the peripheries populated by Dark Others into our suburbs.

Everything we have that we list in our catalogue of civilization is forged out of fraud, theft, and murder. The cities of the world are built up on fraud, theft, and murder. Show me the exception, and I’ll take it back.

The fine woods and metals and animal guts that make the orchestras, the stones and steel and trees for our libraries, the fabric and workmanship of our clothing, and the food displayed strategically along our supermarket shelves… they all require war. They are taken from cultures who first refuse to cooperate, then who are forced to cooperate or be depopulated.

The expansive and expanding heaps of technomass — of asphalt and glass and plastic and paint and shiny right-angles — are scraped out of hillsides and coastlines, with the corpses of biomes and simpler cultures left behind as the mizzens of this wretched thing called civilization. The more this disease has spread, the more it has manifested and magnified its most acute symptom: war.

Technology is driven by scarcity, and scarcity by pillage, and new technology to correct for the iatrogenesis of the last technology. This is not a mark of superiority, but the cascading catastrophe of power seeking the enslavement of first women, then slaves and colonies and nature…

Conquest is a necessity to continue civilization. How long would this country last as it is without the oil from abroad? What if those abroad said, No? Be real, be realistic before you answer this question with pious abstractions. How long would things stay “stable” hereabouts if the supermarket shelves were suddenly bare? If the shutters went up on WalMart’s windows? How much of what we take for granted each and every day comes from someplace else, where the cop with the truncheon stands near the worker, and the sea lane is kept open by a Naval battle group?

Every “advanced” society exists as a parasite on those less “advanced,” and that can be proven empirically and decisively. Civilization cannot exist in the absence of war, because civilization is itself inherently exploitative. Los Angeles cannot exist without the water from Colorado. New York cannot exist without the “inputs” from abroad. We know damn well this is true, so we conceal it under pretty abstractions like “free market,” and pretend that the wars required to maintain the power of the powerful are moral failures, anomalies within civilization instead of something as intrinsic as long ears on a rabbit.

Bring us to the point where we will at least admit of this truth; and there is a remote chance that we can figure out some tentative first steps how to stop the runaway train… that is, in the end, to change everything.

    This is a go-nowhere story.

Cheney and Bush will offer no explanations, apologies, and probably won’t even really comment substantively. Do they ever when the light shines on them?

Bush will indeed pardon Libby, who will NEVER reveal the true circumstances behind the entire incident. No tell all, no nothing.
Sorry, cynicism just burrowed deep into my soul….

I’m glad SOMEONE got indicted and convicted, but it really doesn’t make a dent in the atrocious behavior, past and present, of this administration. They, and consequently we as a nation, have sunk as low as we’ve ever been.

  14. kerryinalaska says:

they should have destroyed the tapes……exactly. These people don’t consider others damaged lives, only their own position. This cabal is criminal in the extreme and no one seems able to bring them to task. So what if mr libby goes to prison? Nothing has changed. An idiot and his rich friends are still in control and they have shown they will lie and ruin to start illegal wars. No one wants to deal with the real problem, or even admit to it. Chenney Bush is a criminal cabal, by their own admission. What a seriously deranged country.

Unlike religion technology does not stay stagnant. Technology builds on itself and the world of science is still young. Science can make it so oil is no longer needed to maintain the current level of civilization and then even increase it. Science can level the playing field in all ways… when robots do all work what good is money?

When man gives up on finding the truth they resort to what is easiest to accomplish their goals… whether a god is invented to explain nature or a war is started to achieve what otherwise would require decades of constant toil… in the end it is just a lack of will to continue struggling to achieve truth untarneshed by fake gods or killing those who stand in your way.

Science is delivering the power to achieve the ever increasing aspirations of human civilization without resorting to our past madness.

  24. veritas says:

Now that the truth has been recorded for posterity, the american people need to demand an explanation of the treasonous actions of this administration in all of this. Not only do we deserve a HUGE explanation but I believe the people, in light of the complicity of the people in the two highest offices in this country, need to call for their immediate removal from office. It’s quite simple: On all front, and in all functions of their serious position as leaders of our government, they have failed the people. Not only have they failed the people but they’ve made a mockery of the very laws which this country supports. For this alone, they do not deserve to serve the people in office and will no longer have the faith and respect of the american people.

Besides, didn’t Bush say (via Scottie McClellan) that anyone who was involved in this intentional act of treason (Himself & Cheney) would immediately be removed from his administration. I guess this includes himself now???????

Now, Mr. Wilson? The invasion of Iraq was very clearly justified by lies and disinformation when 23 brave members of the U.S. Senate, and 133 equally brave members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted against it!

The way to show sympathy for Wilson is to safely bring our troops out of harm’s way, NOW, and to thank the members of Congress who saw the light long before Mr. Wilson (and his wife).

While we are delighted (and distracted) by Libby’s conviction, you just know it will continue to be dragged out by appeals, and if all else fails, Bush will pardon him. The investigation, unfortunately, began to uncover the Cheney link, but it didn’t rip it all the way off. Even if Libby actually goes to prision someday, the real villians are escaping punishment. That is Cheney, Bush and all their other affiliates that participated in creating the lies to put us into this horrible war.

So, again…not to distract, but to focus our attention on where it needs to be…that is, bringing this travesty of a war to an end, we now have this result going on with the Dems we put in majority power to end it. Until they do the ONE thing they have the power to do under the Constitution to end the war by ending the funding, this kind of bullcrap will continue.

“Senior House Democrats, seeking to placate members of their party from Republican-leaning districts, are pushing a plan that would place restrictions on President Bush’s ability to wage the war in Iraq but would allow him to waive them if he publicly justifies his position.”

  45. Tuber says:

    #35 Patrick(IQ of )1,

Obviously, intelligence is not your forte. Let me help you.

    - The CIA, and all intelligence agencies, is by charter non-political. The reason for this is abundantly clear for all who have common sense. Since you lack that quality, I will explain using small words: So that bad people don’t use them to do bad things.

    - Ms. Plame-Wilson’s group was focusing on Iran, not Iraq. Not only was her career as a patriotic American operative destroyed for political purposes, but the entire operation was exposed. Gee, wouldn’t it be nice to have some intelligence on Iran right now? Sorry, Georgie screwed the pooch on that one and you, as a dolt, are applauding it.

    - Mr. Wilson was correct about the Niger information and has been proven so publicly. So, whatever “tea” he was drinking, I would suggest that they start serving it in large quantities around Washington.

Why you hate America, I don’t know. Probably because your mother never loved you but, hey, from what I can see, how can you blame her?

  46. CONservative says:

Obama is probably more interested in conning people into voting for him than he is in wounded warriors – a term that confirms his acceptance of our militarism.

Obama supported warmonger Joseph Lieberman for the senate and sucked up the other day to AIPAC, an organization that lobbies for the Likud party, supporters of slaughter and mayhem in Lebanon and Palestine and war on Iran, as does Lieberman.

Scooter Libby was not doing this for his own..
He was doing this for the policy which is set by his bosses and dictated such actions.

Libby was without a doubt the ‘fall guy’.

This is similar to Iran Contra when everything was blamed on Oliver North when in fact the people on the top set the policy and he was just an operative who take orders.

Policy was made to shut off everybody who speaks against th drive to war in Iraq. Wilson and his wife were in the way.

    The president’s special economic adviser was told to go also when he said the war might cost around 100 billions;
another military general was told to go because he said the war might need over 500,000 troops to have full control of Iraq.

SOMEONE in the current nasty, corrupt, filthy, lying administration DOES knows who outed Plame. But whoever he/she/they/it is/are, by helping to lie us into the invasion, occupation, and destruction of Iraq, we can’t count on them to ‘FESS UP!”

  85. Tuber says:

    #55,

Gosh, I don’t pretend to be a CIA mastermind but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

Ms. Plame-Wilson was not an undercover spy sneaking through overseas government operations taking pictures with her lipstick case. She was working as a covert operative at a CIA front company posing as an EXECUTIVE. Therefore, her going out on the town with her husband would actually HELP her cover. Until it was exposed that she was actually a covert CIA operative and her cover was blown. As was the cover of the CIA front company. As was the cover, then, of everyone who worked for that “company”.

This is a simple concept that relies upon one critical factor, and that is that no one find out that the employees of the front company are actually CIA agents.

It was not “known” that Ms. Plame-Wilson was a covert CIA agent. If anything, what was known was that Ms. Plame was an executive at Brewster Jennings.

Does it make sense to you now?

  86. Tracy says:

Actually, this troll may have been talking about Scooter. He is indeed a LIAR. He was just convicted of this by a jury of his own peers. Is that what you were talking about? Yes, that is horrible!

What amazes me is that these trolls somehow enjoy hanging out with people who most likely hate them. I could NEVER see myself posting regularly on a right-wing board just to annoy them. That is really sick behavior. I would rather hang out with my lefty friends. Or maybe these trolls just have no friends so they hang out here trying to annoy us. Truly sad!!

You want them to release the transcripts of their testimony? Why don’t we put you on the stand? Why not release all the interviews you gave to Nicholas Kristof and other reporters where you lied your ass off?

Politics in the Bush Admin. trumps everything: integrity, honesty and morality. It’s politics, which, in their case, encompasses personal wealth, but the Constitution is the most damaged in their reign of power. The welfare of the people (the nation) no matter how much they proclaim their patriotism, the Bushies are concerned only for themselves and their own welfare.

#84 a nice and concise explanation that even a troll should be able to comprehend. Not that they will do so, however, because their minds are closed, but you have made an excellent, clear attempt at explaining Plame’s identity.

  113. Jackie Rawlings says:

Some American could care less about our troops dying in Iraq because of Bush/Cheney’s lies. If Bush invaded Iran illegally these people would still support him but would never join the military to fight. Notice Bush/Cheney are ready to lie and send our kids to die but wouldn’t protect this country during Vietnam. Yes Bush was drunk and scared so Daddy got him out before his follow soldiers left to fight. Cheney got the 5 deferments he was so scared and one for his wife having a baby. Now I remember their were thousands of married soldiers who wives were having babies but these man were real men so they went to combat. Now during the election Kerry who served twice was called a coward as the real cowards were laughing at the American people for being so stupid. Karl Rove used God and like the bible says the people followed Satan and now say their sorry.

  114. Jim says:

I have a question for all the Trollsand other wingbats here. How many Iranians who worked for Ms. Plame were tourtured or died as a result of the Administration’s Crimminal Action in outing Ms. Plame.
By blowing her cover, they guarenteed that if caught working for the Great Satan as the hardliners in Iran call us, they would suffer this fate.
Bother your Conscience a little bit? Thats assuming you Trolls have one!

  116. Jim says:

You seem to know so much.

    Do you use Google?

  121. Jim says:

My empathy is authentic. Those that worked for Ms. Plame believed in what they were doing. They thought that they were helping bring a better future to Iran. The tragedy is that their lives were destroyed for a petty payback. Because Mr. Wilson told the truth and called Bull S**t on the Bushies for taking us into a bad war based on bald faced lies and obfuscations.
As for you Flaco, you’re a Troll and nothing more. You’re opinion, such as it is doesn’t count for anything.

  124. Itsanyoneguess says:

It doesn’t matter what the trolls lament about and it doesn’t matter what names they get called. What matters is that a senior admin official in the employ of a petty, vindictive, vulgar ( go fuck yourself) VP decided to LIE when questioned by a federal prosecutor and grand jury. It’s not just the value of the info that was leaked it or who it was leaked to, it was the decision to LIE. It would have behooved him to have taken the fifth, say nothing, but he chose to LIE. That the decision to LIEcame so easily speaks volumes. This is what the trolls don’t understand as lying to them becomes second nature when done in what they consider defense of their supposed cause. What matters is that LIE came with an exceptional cost to everyone: The American public who were duped into supporting a war, Libby now convicted and his life destroyed and once again the American public bitch slapped when Bush pardons him.

  125. Bluedog49 says:

Lucifer, Flaco and other Bush cultists, Scott McClellan, Bush’s secretary, was speaking for Bush when he said, “if anyone in this administration was involved in it, they would no longer be in this administration.”

The very next day, a reporter reminded Bush of McClellan’s words and asked Bush if he agreed with McClellan. Bush said, “yes.”

During the trial, it came out that at least 10 members of the administration were “involved in it.” Now, obviously you hold your cult leader to a lower standard than most — that’s part of being in a cult. But, really, are your standards so low and your view so delusional that you can’t bring yourself to admit that you have been wrong about this entire affair. Flaco, you’re going to have to come up with a better argument than “you’re all moonbats!” And, Lucifer, now that you’ve finished trashing Joe Wilson, you might consider that the President’s father called him a hero for valiantly standing up to Saddam Hussein during the first gulf war. I’m guessing the guy has just a little more courage than you do on your best day.

    You’re both just pathetic.
