Domenici hires Duke Cunningham’s lawyer.

Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) has “hired a top defense attorney to handle the pending ethics investigation into allegations that he pressured a federal prosecutor to bring indictments against New Mexico Democrats on the eve of the 2006 elections.” His choice: “Lee Blalack, who recently represented former congressman Randy ‘Duke’ Cunningham (R-CA), who is now serving time in prison for bribery and other offenses,” and who was prosecuted by purged U.S. Attorney Carol Lam.

Probably should hire a lawyer that wins cases.

  2. ImpeachBushNow says:

That ought to turn out well…

  3. Spudge_Boy says:

Good, we know how well he did in that case. So, when will we be seeing Domenici crying his eyes out before heading to prison?

  4. hellinabucket says:

This comedy of errors is just writing itself. Too bad p1 isn’t a lawyer. But grateful he isn’t a soldier.

  5. klyde says:

So he hired a lawyer failed to get another corrupt congress critter off. Sweet!

  6. Gummitch says:

If and when he’s convicted, he’ll finally own up to it, and then the wingnuts can all blather on about his incredible showing of character and nobility — unlike those damn democrats.

  7. Raven says:

Maybe Oily Peter is just trying to line up the Dukester as a cell mate…

  8. Wayne says:

looks like the Republican party is just filled with people that are pushing to become the next convicted martyr felon.
    Bunch of fscking crooks.

  9. CONservative says:

Good, hopefully this means we can get rid of one more wacko! Hopefully Heather Wilson (or whatever her name is) will hire him too.

  10. Swordsbane says:

That makes sense. Shouldn’t you hire a lawyer who WINS cases like yours?

  11. Raven says:

It’s all the same case here in New Mexico, Domenici wasn’t even running for (re)election last November, but undoubtedly called the prosecutor because Heather Wilson was having difficulties due to her support of Bush’s war….

  12. tlueders says:

It’s like these guys are standing in a circular firing squad, with the smartest of them figuring out the angles- and then standing in the middle.

  13. R says:

#11- Hey- I live in NM, too.
Heather Wilson is crapping her panties and Domenici is one step away from the shingles. -heh, heh- I’m lovin’ it.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

  15. Ben Dover says:

Lets hope Lee is as successful this time around as he was in defending the Dukester. In fact, lets hope that all the Repugnican members of Congress (and formers including DeLay) hire Lee. I think his record of avoiding convictions, as the Dukester’s case demostrates, shows that he is the perfect person to defend these crooked sons of bitches.

    Go Lee! Bring em on.

  16. Raven says:

Oh what a feeling of true enchantment, eh?!

  17. Unholy Moses says:

Maybe it’s just me, but innocent people usually don’t make haste to lawyer up.

You know, for all the issues the Dems had there for a while in the 80s and 90s, it took them 40 years to have rampant corruption. The GOP has managed to do it in 12.

    I guess they’re just over achievers …

LOL… I was thinking the same exact thing.

  19. R says:

Heather was so very arrogant and nasty during the elections and won by the very narrowest of margins. Her bland and “holier-than-thou” eyebrow-raised expression only serves to make her appear more superficial and empty than she really is in person.

  20. JPV says:

Good, we know how well he did in that case. So, when will we be seeing Domenici crying his eyes out before heading to prison?

    Comment by Spudge_Boy

With the inevitable sob story about him coming to the realization that alcohol or substance abuse is what led to his errant behavior.

  21. Raven says:

I totally agree with your perceptions, R, here’s hoping Petey gets the boot, Gov. Bill gets to name his replacement, and Jeff gets to be the Senior Senator.
As for Heather, well, I’ll have to think of a suitable demise for her… give me a minute…!

  22. Raven says:

There’s also a potential real estate scandal lurking in Domenici’s closet, he’s going to need more than one lawyer to hold back the cascade of bones as they open his closet door…

  23. Shane says:

Good attorneys are too moral to handle these crooked Repukes.
    LMAO

  24. R says:

Raven- The exciting and wonderful word of fast-food is a real challenge, these days.
Given that Heather is a young Representative, her demise will be fairly noticed. She is the “heir-apparent” but barely out of the starting gate, as far as careers go. Viva Bingaman and Tom Udall! You da men!

  25. Tj says:

    There are no moral attorneys.

  26. Tj says:

    He’s guilty anyways.

  27. Zooey says:

We see how well that worked for Cunningham.

    What a doofus.

  28. War4Sale says:

Excellent choice! May Blalack be just as effective in keeping Domenici out of prison as he was with Cunningham!

p.s. When Domenici is convicted, Rush will say it’s the “best possible thing that could happen for conservatives,” which will once again prompt the rest of us to ask…what kinda weird drugs is he on now??!!

  29. Uncle Ho says:

May the Duke’s lawyer be just as successful in this case as he was for Cunningham. : D

  30. Coffins Draped with Flags says:

Smart move by Dominici. Maybe he can share a jail cell with his buddy “Duke”.

  31. dlet says:

Blalack?!? His family must have been given that surname by a drunken Federal worker at Ellis Island.

Anyway tough beans for Domenici. Glad to see no good lawyers would take his case. Just ones who lose.

Words taken right out of my mouth Uncle Ho! I hope that Heather Wilson also hires the same guy when she gets her opportunity.

  33. Don says:

Actually Blalack is a pretty good lawyer it’s just Republicans are such bad criminals.

    We give ordinary people
the tools to change the world.
    About Peace Action

Peace Action, the merger of SANE and The Nuclear Freeze, has effectively mobilized for peace and disarmament for nearly fifty years.

As the nation’s largest grassroots peace group we get results: from the 1963 treaty to ban above ground nuclear testing, to the 1996 signing of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, from ending the war in Vietnam, to blocking weapons sales to human rights abusing countries, and eliminating funding for new nuclear weapons, Peace Action and its 100,000 members have been, and continue to be, at the forefront of the international movement for peace.

    At Peace Action we believe…

…that war is not a suitable response to conflict.

For nearly 50 years Peace Action has worked for an environment where all are free from violence and war. We understand that long standing global conflicts require long-term solutions, and that US foreign policy has a lasting effect on the world. We are working to promote a new US foreign policy that is based on peaceful support for human rights and democracy, reducing the threat from weapons of mass destruction, and cooperation with the world community. We are against pre-emptive war, and call for a full withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

…that every person has the right to live without the threat from nuclear weapons.

There are still over 30,000 nuclear weapons in the world. The US and Russia still have thousands of nuclear weapons, on hair trigger alert—ready to launch in minutes. While the Cold War may have ended, the nuclear threat has not. The only way to ensure that nuclear weapons will never be used – whether purposefully, or accidentally – is global abolition. The U.S. must lead the way to a safer world by taking our weapons off hair trigger alert, halting our research and development of new nuclear weapons and disarming and demilitarizing our warhead stockpile of over 10,000 nuclear warheads. We can reduce the threat to the world posed by nuclear weapons, but we must start by getting serious about getting rid of our own weapons of mass destruction.

…that America has the resources to both protect and provide for its citizens.

As the Pentagon’s budget soars to $400 billion, 17% of American children live in poverty. Basic infrastructure is crumbling, school are using outdated textbooks, and millions of Americans are without basic health insurance.

For what the US will spend on the War in Iraq, 26,701,621 children could have attended a year of Head Start, we could have built 1,815,194 additional housing units for the poor, we could have hired 3,493,706 additional public school teachers for one year, and we could have provided 9,772,998 students four-year scholarships at public universities(source – National Priorities Project). We believe that these are priorities that should come before war.

What we do at Peace Action…

We are the nation’s largest grassroots Peace network, with over 28 state affiliates, and over 100 local chapters. We organize our grassroots network to place pressure on Congress and the Administration through write-in campaigns, internet actions, citizens lobbying and direct action. Through a close relationship with progressive members of Congress, we play a key role in devising strategies to move forward peace legislation, and, as a leading organizing member of United for Peace and Justice and the Win Without War coalition, we lend our expertise and large network to achieving common goals.

Through our Peace Voter awareness campaigns, we inform citizens about their choices for both local and national campaigns, by highlighting different candidates’ stances on issues relating to peace. Our annual Congressional Voter Guide gives credit to those in Congress who voted for a peaceful future, while holding accountable those who voted for larger Pentagon budgets, spending tax dollars on nuclear weapons, and voted for wars of aggression and occupation.

Given the right tools, ordinary people can change the world.

At Peace Action, we recognize that real change comes from the bottom up and we are committed to educating and organizing at the grassroots level.

When you join Peace Action you become part of an effective citizen movement. We work hard to keep you informed through our quarterly newsletter and publications about the most important news and issues in the peace movement. As a member you can join our Action Alert Network which allows citizens throughout the country to rapidly respond to important legislation online. As a member, you can become an important part of a fast growing national movement, and help us change the direction of our country and the world towards a more sustainable, peaceful future.

Together, we have the power to change the world.

    Support Peace.

  36. Ex-New Mexican says:

I doubt the Senate Ethics Committee can put anyone in jail. If Dominici did what is alleged, so what? This is just politics as usual in New Mexico. It is as corrupt a place as you can imagine. You posters that like to hoot at the Republican Party would do well to check out the history of the Democratic Party in New Mexico. I’d put up there with the Democratic Party in Louisiana and New Jersey. They have held that state back economically and in the field of education. New Mexico is a joke.
