More than six years after President Bush assumed office, the global view of the United State’s role in world affairs has significantly deteriorated. A recent BBC world poll reported that even in the past two years the U.S.’s reputation around the world has gone “from bad to worse.”
The practical fallout of “the Bush effect” has been on full display in Brazil, where only 19 percent of the nation has a favorable opinion of him. A review of news reports from President Clinton’s trip to Brazil 10 years ago demonstrate how much times have changed:
Christian Science Monitor, 10/15/97:
[I]t was his trip to a Xerox-sponsored sports center in the Rio slum of Mangueira that won the hearts of many Brazilians and caused a TV commentator to tell his viewers that Clinton’s speech had him on “the verge of tears.” … [Clinton] ignored the Secret Service’s rigid security by shaking hands and allowing admirers to hug and kiss him. Some gave him shirts and caps emblazoned with the logo of the slum’s carnival group. “He looked liked a happy kid finally let loose on the streets,” said Jamelao, one of Mangueira’s most famous samba personalities. Clinton waved a Brazilian flag, listened to samba music while hitting a tambourine, and kicked a soccer ball with Brazil Sports Minister Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the legendary ex-player known as Pele.
BBC, 3/9/07:
Clashes broke out in Brazil’s largest city as US President Bush arrived at the start of a six-day regional tour. At least 20 people were injured in clashes with riot police in Sao Paulo after thousands turned out to protest against George W Bush’s visit. … In Sao Paulo, about 10,000 people spilled out along one of the city’s broadest avenues, in the heart of the financial district, banging drums, waving red flags and carrying banners reading “Bush Go Home.” … Many of the demonstrators are angry at the war in Iraq and the proposed ethanol deal, which they say is an attempt to control the country’s production of the bio-fuel which powers eight out of 10 new cars in Brazil.
It is upside down world. The more the world hates us, so the Bush Cultists say, the safer we are!
Yep, 6 years of unfettered Republicanism have left America in debt, fighting three wars at once, China on a military and political ascendency, the Cold War with Russia re-igniting, the homefront politically divided, worldwide terrorism increasing, debts, dysfunctional government and cynicism at all time highs.
The triumph of Republicanism at its acme!
Heckuva job.

March 9th, 2007 at 11:35 amETHANOL
Sadly, that's not enough. Ethanol may sound like the kind of "friendly" energy the world has been waiting for. But for ethanol production to rise to the levels Mr Bush is hoping for, huge amounts of the world's remaining forests will have to be cut down and turned over to corn or sugar cane.
The existing hectarage devoted to agriculture will not be remotely large enough to produce the quantity of fuel needed. In other words, paradoxically, a growing reliance of renewable energy may accelerate the destruction of the rainforests we so desperately need to moderate the planet's temperature. Besides, according to the World Conservation Union, growing corn uses far more energy than the finished fuel produces.
There is another downside to the ethanol boom. As demand rises, the price of the cereals from which it is partly made soars as well. Tortilla prices in Mexico are already surging as a result of ethanol demand in America. This threatens the precarious livelihoods of many of the world's poorest people.
To simply shift from fossil fuel use to ethanol is not going to get us out of our dilemma. It's not going to "save the planet", or not alone. That will require a sharp reduction in fuel consumption, too. The question is whether Mr Bush, other world leaders, or the public, for that matter, have taken this fact on board.
THATS WHY BUSH WANTS ETHANOL

The midwest is corn country - not the rain forest.
Because tortilla prices are getting high in Mexico we should forget the whole idea. Its too hard.
In addition when the primary reason for growing some corn is ethanol instead of taste or storage ability for feed hybridization can be used to make a corn easier to grow towards that end.

However if a reporter had reported that fishermen were pulling bodies out of a river a few weeks ago they would have been accused of focusing only on the bad news.
Now it is important for the media to note that things are NOT as terrible as they used to be.
Hooray! Martial Law and daily intrusions into peoples' houses by armed military prevents violence!
Maybe we can bring such conservative values home with us! Starting next week I propose a movement to allow the US military into all houses in redstates to prevent any forms of violence! Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.
Bush's seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans.
Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites — which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles — would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30...

COVER STORY
A wave of protests
In a unique show of solidarity, all the Left parties staged demonstrations and organised public meetings and conventions to protest against what they called the blatantly imperialist, interventionist, hegemonic and expansionist agenda of the U.S.
PROTESTS were witnessed also in Pakistan and Bangladesh, two other countries Clinton visited. The Labour Party of Pakistan (LPP) held a demonstration on March 22 outside the U.S. Consulate in Lahore despite a ban announced by the Gen. Pervez Musharraf go vernment on political rallies and strikes. Members of the LPP carried placards which read "Clinton go back", "Killer Clinton", and "Killer of Iraqi children" and raised slogans against U.S. imperialism. They pointed out that the visit was a conspiracy ag ainst the working class. They appealed to the trade unions and the working class in the subcontinent to protest against Clinton's visit as it was aimed at pushing the imperialist economic agenda in order to exploit the region.

It's a fair point, Clinton did face protests when he travelled abroad. I don't think anyone is denying this. However, the post is comparing a Clinton visit to a Bush visit in Brazil.
Whether you like it or not, the current Bush administration has seriously damaged the perception of the US abroad and it's going to take an awful lot of effort to get the rep of the US back to 1999 levels.

Comment by Exley — March 9, 2007 @ 12:32 pm
Exley, I assume you're attempting to drag Clinton into the picture yet again to attempt to make the case that similar abuses occurred under Clinton's tenure.
Two problems with that.
First, why do you think pointing out the misdeeds of a prior President excuses the current one to commit similar misdeeds? On the contrary, if it was wrong then, it's wrong now, right? It's truly amusing to watch you try to simultaneously condemn Clinton and exonerate Chimpy with the same argument.
Second, the misdeeds of the prior administration, wrong though they were pale into utter insignificance next to the monstrous damage this administration has done to this country and the world in general, as they pursue their fanatical vision of a global world hegemony.
Next time you attempt to defend this administration, at least make the attempt to do it without mentioning Clinton. Continually doing so just makes you look even more stupid and deluded.

I just wanted to point out that there is almost always a segment of society that will come out and protest a U.S. president's visit, regardless of who he or she is.

What is TripmasterMonkey.com? It’s a cheeky news magazine for the Asia-savvy. Yellow journalism served up fresh—that’s our goal. On the site, you’ll find plenty of pop culture, offbeat topics, unusual views on U.S. and world news, and—as we ramp up—more graphic content (comics, photo essays, illustrated stories). In short, it’s a place for some fun and titillation. A lychee-martini lounge on the Web.
What’s with the name? The name comes from Maxine Hong Kingston’s novel about a hipster playwright, a modern-day incarnation of the fabled Monkey King, who spread Buddhism from India to China. Pretty trippy, right? As we see it, tripmasters are people who connect different worlds and cultures and ideas. People like you. (BTW, we’re not affiliated with Maxine Hong Kingston, the novel, or the defunct band of the same name.)

Why a Web magazine? Seeing connections that exist across cultures—that’s what we’re all about. We love the borderless nature of the Web. It’s totally cosmic, man. A way to link to what’s Out There. The casual, ephemeral nature of the Web is perfect for a light but tasty sampling of Asian-accented news.
How are you funded? Excellent question. TMM is a volunteer effort, though it’s not technically a nonprofit. We’re funded through private donations, ads, and the sale of branded merchandise.
So, how do you define Asia? We follow the Asia Society’s definition: “The area from Japan to Iran, and from Central Asia to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands." Though, given our namesake, we tend to focus on countries where the Monkey King managed to spread the Buddha’s teachings to a large segment of the population.
Um, you really like monkeys. Well, Tripmaster Stephen Hawking probably said it best: “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special."
Okay, you guys are completely bananas. Can I write for you? Sure, submit to the monkey.

TripMaster,
My point seems to have eluded you. I suggest you read my response to UK at posting #76. The point of my posting is not to criticize Clinton at all (You really must get over your persecution complex), but rather to point out that an American president is almost always subjected to protests by a certain segment of society when he or she travels abroad.
By acknowledging that Clinton too was faced with (sometimes violent) protests in nations such as India, Greece, and Bangladesh, we see that this idea posited by ThinkProgress on this threas that the U.S. was universally loved under Clinton and universally hated under Bush is quite simply false.
I hope that clears it up for you, TPM.
March 9th, 2007 at 12:58 pmBravo Trip, thank you for posting #72.....Blessings

Guilty as charged. I apparently gave you too much credit earlier.
Honestly, your defense of Chimpy is 'all presidents are demonstrated against in foreign countries'? That's pathetically weak, Exley....far less than I expected. Sad, really.
I've never claimed Clinton was a saint. He's a genuine shady character. But attempting to compare his misdeeds to Chimpy's is as laughable as attempting to compare a serial shoplifter to a serial rapist.
I genuinely expected better from you, Exley. Seems that today is just full of disappointments.

He can't because he hasn't read the book.
Genesis 38:7-10
Note that this passage is generally used to justify a prohibition on mastrubation, and would thus probably cover oral as well. It is the biblical grounds on which contraception is out.
Also, note to Darryl, Onan would have classed as having done this in Wedlock, so no, marriage does not negate the ban.

Exley does have a point - sort of. US Presidents will always get it in the neck when they travel to the third world because (rightly or wrongly), the US President can always be used as a way to vent anger at a global economic and political system which many perceive to be grossly unfair and slanted toward the first world.
However, I don't think that there can be any debate as to whether the protests have expanded under Bush when compared to Clinton. The US is extremely unpopular abroad and it is thanks to the policies of Bush.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:26 pm"But attempting to compare his misdeeds to Chimpy’s is as laughable as attempting to compare a serial shoplifter to a serial rapist."
Hmmm...Again, my point continues to elude you. No where did I try to compare Bill Clinton's supposed "misdeeds" to Bush's supposed "misdeeds."
I have simply (and successfully) pointed out that protests (sometimes violent) have met both presidents Clinton and Bush when they travelled abroad. So, to imply, as ThinkProgress tried to do with this posting, that the U.S. was universally loved by the world under Clinton and universally despised under Bush is both erroneous and silly.
Also silly is your admonition that I not reference Clinton in this discussion when the very point of this thread as posted by ThinkProgress is to draw a comparison between Clinton's travels and Bush's travels.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:28 pmIn many states, sex with your opposite-sex marital partner is restricted to the missionary position, no oral, no other positions, no other entrances. This is from Bible stuff Daryll.
So if Daryll did anything other than missionary with the wife, he's in voilation.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:33 pmUK,
Agreed. I do not for a moment nor have I argued that Bush is as popular abroad as Clinton was or that the U.S. has not taken a hit stature-wise since the Iraq War. Undoubtedly it has. That cannot be denied.
I was simply trying to caution against overarching conclusions being drawn about the U.S. position in the world based on these protests in Brazil.
I mean, when Clinton visited Greece in 1999, there were violent riots as 10,000 protesters took to the streets. Clinton was warned by U.S. and Greek security officials to cut short his trip. Ugly and unpleasant and unfair to Clinton? Of course. But it did not mean that world despised the U.S.

Again, I am no fan of the Clintons...either one. But attempting to minimize the differences in overseas public opinion between Bubba and Chimpy is nothing more than an underhanded attempt to defend Chimpy - again, your histrionics notwithstanding. Think of it this way: Your lot cast out the religious nutballs from Europe and sent them to America.
Once here, the religious nutballs found it difficult to live within their own restrictions, so people started acting out. It's gotten so bad that the religious nutballs feel that if they "come to Christ", all will be forgiven.
There's a reason why 90+ percent of all sex offenders currently in jail are Christian in the USA.

March 9th, 2007 at 1:49 pmBruce Gorton,
I want to see a passage from the Bible that says "Putting thine pen!s into a females mouth is a sin against God" I don't want some freaks (not you) interpretation of a passage that has to do with squirting on the floor.
It isn't there. Everything is some crazy's interpretation of what it means.
When I was going to school and the teacher assigned me home work, I wasn't allowed to interpret what I was supposed to do. I was supposed to read it literally.
That is exactly what is wrong with organized religion. They inperpret sh!t however they want, giving freaks like the trolls here leway to be complete basket cases and tell people what they can and can't do.
I ain't buying it. God meant what the fu*k he said. He didn't say "Read my book and twist it to your liking."
March 9th, 2007 at 1:53 pm"But the implication is clear, your protestations notwithstanding."
Actually, TripMaster, you could not be more wrong. For the protesters in Pakistan to call Clinton a "Killer" or "Killer of Iraqi Children" was patently absurd, offensive, and contrary to the facts. It was Saddam Hussein who was the killer of Iraqi children. Not President Clinton.
Similarly, for Greek leftists to riot in the street and threaten Clinton's safety because Clinton had led NATO in stopping Milosevic from commiting mass murder in Kosovo (an action I fully support, by the way) was also offensive and ludicrous.
In short, Clinton was met with protests because of actions he undertook that were correct and justified (Containing Saddam and stopping Milosevic). The fact that he was met by violent protests did not make Clinton's actions wrong.
TPM, you began this discussion with "I assume you’re attempting to drag Clinton into the picture yet again to attempt to make the case that similar abuses occurred under Clinton’s tenure." Well, you assumed wrong. Remember what Felix Unger said happens when you "assume."

I read this article before about religion and America. My favorite quote is this.

March 9th, 2007 at 5:45 pmRight, some read it thus. BUt a further look into the passage illustrates that it isn't the masterbation, but the disobedience.
Onan had a duty under Jewish law to provide for his brother's lineage an heir. To do that he was to take his brother's wife and impregnate her. The child would not be his under their law,but would be considered his deceased brother's.
Onan,by 'spilling his seed upon the ground' regused to do his duty (both spiritual and legal under their law) to his dead brother.
Many people do not think beyond the first reading of a passage, sadly. There is something inherent in strict fundamentalism that seems to shut down people's brains.
