The House of Representatives voted yesterday to create a new congressional committee devoted solely to addressing the global climate crisis.
Unable to block the creation of the committee, House conservative leaders are now doing everything they can to neuter it. Conservative leadership aides reportedly told Republican members that a vote in favor of the bill creating the global warming panel “would put them out of running for a seat” on the panel.
Worse, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) has named Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to be the committee’s top ranking Republican member. A look at Sensenbrenner’s record:
Sensenbrenner praised as ‘Inhofe of the House’: “If there is an Inhofe on the House side, it has to be Wisconsin’s James Sensenbrenner Jr.,” says the American Conservative Union’s David Keene, referring to Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), who calls global warming the “greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.” [Link]
Sensenbrenner led climate skeptic delegation to Kyoto conference: “As chairman of the Science Committee back in 1998, Sensenbrenner led a delegation of skeptics to the Kyoto conference and fought then-President Clinton’s attempt to go along with the Kyoto protocols.” [Link]
Sensenbrenner asked scientist about placing catalytic converters on cows to combat warming: “Does (it) mean to stop this increase in methane we’ve got to put catalytic converters on the backs of cows?” Sensenbrenner asked a climate scientist at a hearing last month. If cows are partly responsible for methane gases, Sensenbrenner said, that “could hit Wisconsin’s economy right between the horns.” [Link]
Sensenbrenner endorsed by Competitive Enterprise Institute: A spokesman for the oil industry-backed Competitive Enterprise Institute called Sensenbrenner “exceptionally well qualified” and “a good choice.” [E&E Daily, 2/17/07]
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) — who last month claimed that global warming may have been caused by “dinosaur flatulence” — was reportedly a finalist for the ranking member slot. Only 13 percent of congressional Republicans say they believe that human activity is causing global warming, according to a recent poll, compared to 79 percent of Americans.

The conditions for a true nightmare scenario are being created not in Brazil, despite its environment concerns, but in the US’s own domestic ethanol industry.
While Brazil’s tropical climate allows it to source alcohol from its sugar crop, the US has turned to its industrialised corn belt for the raw material to substitute oil. The American economist Lester R Brown, from the Earth Policy Institute, is leading the warning voices: “The competition for grain between the world’s 800 million motorists who want to maintain their mobility and its two billion poorest people who are simply trying to stay alive is emerging as an epic issue.”
March 9th, 2007 at 1:03 pmAnother problem is the land required to produce Ethanol. One estimate is that the grain needed to fill the petrol tank of a 4X4 with ethanol is sufficient to feed a person for a year.
Imagine this in the terms of all the cars in the world
March 9th, 2007 at 1:07 pmThey shouldn’t have appointed anyone at all. But if they are going to appoint someone then it is good to appoint someone who will call this what it is, faux religion.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:09 pmLet’s keep watching this space for who will run against Sensenbrenner and how we can support them.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:14 pmPatrick needs an upgrade, he’s beginning to skip.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:14 pmHere’s a good article—
March 9th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
I’m sure Sensenbrenner’s reputation precedes itself and will be a voice that everyone knows to ignore and rebuke. A putz by any other name, would sound the same.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:16 pmWe, the American people, need to fixate on the ones who are responsible for contributing to misinformation and literally drive them out of the public servant business. We all know who they are and what they stand, and don’t, stand for. The line needs to be drawn now. If it’s farts that they say create the problem, they should start with Bush and his. Imagine how masculine George would look with a converter strapped to his spineless back. -heh-

March 9th, 2007 at 1:19 pmAgri-Business, and its brother the Chemical Industry, overseen by their father, the Oil industry, are the profiteers in this push towards bio fuels.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:20 pmThe loss of natural forests as the natural mechanism for the exchange of carbon dioxide into oxygen, combined with the burning of those forests, and the burning of the cane fields, will far outweigh the reduction of carbon achieved from burning a cleaner fuel in automobiles.
A truly unknown, and potentially devestating consequence, is the use of genetically modified crops to produce these fuels.
The current decimation of honey bees and other pollinators, to unknown causes, could render the whole scheme a worthless endeavor in the best case scenario.
The EU has banned a pesticide which has shown to have an adverse effect on pollinators.
The US isn’t even close to acknowledging there might be a problem.
And South America still uses DDT and a host of other pest and herbicides that were banned in this country decades ago.
That’s what little girls like to do.

Thanks for illustrating a real-time, real world example of how your mind works.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:24 pmGood post, Raven.
ConAgra, ADM, Dow, Monsanto, Exxon, Mobil, ad nauseum have been raping our resources in their worship of the Profit God for far too long.
It must scare the crap out of them to see Chavez nationalizing utility and fuel entities. Here, they get a free ride to the bank while influencing future legislation for further subsidies and supports.
Wasn’t it Sennsebrenner flatulating all over D.C., or was that Inhofe?
March 9th, 2007 at 1:27 pmI welcome moves like this.
The world has made its choice, the people of the US are largely in agreement. We’ve all pretty much moved on, so let the Republican leadership remain stuck in the mud on this.
My sense is that the clock is ticking on Republicans who play this game of waving ’studies’ (sponsored by the oil industry) around and calling it all a big hoax. They may get their campaign money, they may please the most hardcore of their base for another election cycle or two, but at some point these people will start to lose elections in droves. The electorate has not yet held their representatives accountable for their climate positions, but that’s coming very soon.
Patrick1 - I hear what you’re saying. There are alot of people demanding ‘faith’ in this area. I’m a natural skeptic myself :: when the entire world walks together in lockstep, I’m the first one to ask if anyone actually knows where they’re going. But THAT is not enough of a reason to deny the core science. There’s always bad faith on both sides of any controversial issue, but don’t discount the climate change phenomenon simply because you hate Al Gore (for example) - people who take a position out of spite are just as bad as the people on the other side they accuse of not being rational/honest/fair/open or whatever.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:27 pmgood article, but misleading headline.
he is not leading the committee.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:29 pm#4 we tried to get him out of office last year but the Republican idoits in my district voted him back in. This Bryan Kennedy that was running against his did pretty good. He will not run against him in 08. We willl have to fine someone else to run. He has been in office to long. He is a very arragant person. I write to him all the time and all I get is his Republican spin.

March 9th, 2007 at 1:48 pmGlobal warming has been recognized by scientists and almost all governments, including the USA (until TRAITOR Bush, of course)

No bullzhit spin from the Nazis of the Bush Crime Corporation will change that.

March 9th, 2007 at 1:50 pmChange the title of your post. Sensenbrenner is the ranking member, not the leader of the panel.
Thank GAWD.

March 9th, 2007 at 1:53 pm13%?! No wonder Congress did nothing except steal money for the last 10 years - these guys are (I assume) college graduates, a lot of them lawyers - how can they possibly ignore both science and logic?
March 9th, 2007 at 1:53 pmRachel is pulling what I call the ultimate manipulation. And is usually done by the tortured souls who have what we call “borderline personality disorder” And likely co-morbid with Bi-polar disorder.
I think Rachel is basically a good person, and her posts have been reasonable the last week or so. She is intelligent also.
Odds are she will not suicide. That’s not the real goal. All the other manipulations were unsuccessful (NSA, computer hacking, etc) So she’s pulled out the big gun, hopefully not really.
Rachel do not let these people get the better of you. I do not support your decision to hurt yourself, and I hereby order you to avoid that behavior. You are aware of the supports you have in place and you need to use them. TP is not a mental health support group. Expect to be treated like everyone else when you post here.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:04 pmSensenbrenner is in the minorty not the majority. This is good. He can’t throw his weight around this time. I wonder how he feels about this?
March 9th, 2007 at 2:06 pmThe repugs are failing the global community by doing things like this. We can only hope the panel can shows this man the error of his ways and teach him something about global warming.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:07 pmAnd yet again, the Bush administration appoints a fox to guard the henhouse…

March 9th, 2007 at 2:19 pmWOOO HOOOO - those guys never miss a chance to look like complete idiots, do they???????
March 9th, 2007 at 2:28 pmThe same people who don’t believe in evolution don’t believe in global warming.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:37 pmSo since ethanol may not be a perfect, complete solution we should just throw the baby out with the bath water.
Honey bees have always been killed off by pesticides. And in the southwest and South and Central America they have been killed off by African (killer bees). If corn or sugar cane isn’t being used for human consumption it would be an excellent place to put all the manure; chicken, cow, horse, etc. that gets shoveled into piles and runs off into water supplies that then require more energy to clean up and navigate.
The chemical companies created the impression that chemical and fertilizers are needed for crops
when they’re not usually. And hybridizing crops to grow bigger or more disease resistant is more survival of the fittest than Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab.
In a perfect world we would all bike to work and stay at home after with our lights, computers and televisions off. But that’s not happening .
The answer to oil dependence has to come from somewhere. Until other fuels like hydrogen or electicity can be mainstreamed into automobiles ethanol seems like a reasonable stop gap measure.
Who is Rachel and what did you guys do to her to make her write the above?
Rachel, if you are reading this please don’t do what you are suggesting. Life is precious, even if it doesn’t seem that way right now. It will get better.

I thought the Dems were in charge.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:36 pmDon’t worry. Senseless-bummer will actually HELP the cause for addressing global climate change as soon as he opens his mouth. When people actually hear how completely ignorant and uninformed he is, it will make it all the more clear how compelling the science is on this topic. Sometimes, the best thing that can happen for our side is THEM.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:39 pmWho is Rachel and what did you guys do to her to make her write the above?
Comment by Cynicon Implant
Another example of how the rightard mind works. There is no way posters on a blog can “do things” to people to “make” them become suicidal. We are all responsible for our own feelings and state of affairs. Leave it to you to remove personal responsibility from the equation. In all likelyhood Rachel is manipulating.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:41 pmComment by ForTruth — March 9, 2007 @ 3:41 pm
Perhaps, but I’m not going to take the chance. It sounds like Rachel is screaming out for help. Yes a web board isn’t the best place to seek help but surely anything we can do must be a good thing?
March 9th, 2007 at 3:55 pmRachel wants to punish people for setting limits and boundaries with her, That’s what borderline personalities do. When you set reasonable limits and boundaries they go nuts. They will resort to suicidal threats if needed in order to gain control and get thier way. Like if you want to leave them, they threaten to kill themselves. I posted the DSM criteria for her disorder a while ago. It spells it all out.
The last thing they want you to do is ignore them. That’s why she goes to such lengths to get any kind of attention and concern.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:57 pmRachel should be banned as her ego is too fragile for a political discussion board. I urge her to take her psych problems to a more appropriate website. There is no shortage of support groups. This is not one of them.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:58 pmComment by UKBristolDave
The problem is none of us are in the position to do anything about it. That’s where she gains power over the situation. That’s why it is so inappropriate. She wants to see people beg her to not do it. She wants to see who gets concerned for her. She wants to be the center of attention. She wants control over us.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:59 pmThat guy looks like he emits enought gas to burn a hole in the ozone. Where to they find these fat, pasty f**ks?
March 9th, 2007 at 4:04 pmIf Rachel never shows up again, it leaves us all wondering if she did it and if we “made” her.
Its total bullshit, selfish, inappropriate. She should be involuntarily committed. That’ll make her think twice before using that shit to manipulate other people. Everytime I have dealt with clients of this nature, we call them on it, have them hospitalized, and they refrain from it in the future because they hate being confined.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:05 pmThis rachel incident has been a learning experience for me.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:05 pmWhile the posted threat of ending her life carried every element and verbal vehicle of her usual threatening, demeaning and abusive expressions, it does seem to me she is a very disturbed individual.
A person who would go to any length to get attention, including suicide.
I perhaps have not done the best I can, by choosing not to see a threat to take one’s life seriously.
In the future, I will remember this lesson.
Rachel needs to learn more effective ways to interface with others and get her needs met. Her Dr. is obviously a joke if he/she has her on 14 different meds each day. She obviously must recieve public mental health care, which is mostly a joke. I bet she is in AZ. Our SMI system sucks here.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:07 pmIt seems the GOP has no mind of its own. There only ability is to stonewall efforts that are good and just.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:09 pmRaven,
There are a lot of people walking arouind out there who have the same illness as Rachel. Lots of people who do the same shit to thier own families. Rachel decided to pull it here because she can remain anonymous and basically get away with it. If she said that shit in public somewhere, she would be visited by police. She knows that and wouldn’t say it in public somewhere. She only pulls that shit when its “safe” to do so. Like with her own family or on TP.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:09 pm(I don’t take rachel seriously for a moment, For Truth.)
March 9th, 2007 at 4:13 pmAs I stated, the post had every element of her usual mode of operation…
And, besides, if all else fails, death can be the ultimate healing experience…

There you go again. One scientist, only, is bold enough to come up with the TRUTH about Continental Drift. And the other scientists adhere to the old theories because they’re too scared to investigate this bold new one.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:26 pmHow do you think physicists become famous in their fields? They advance new theories and then search for any fact that disproves this theory. One fact that disproves the theory destroys the theory. And this “guy” says that scientist don’t talk about it because its too disruptive to the theories that are already out there.
Science isn’t like religion where believing is the important thing. But I can see why you believe everything the administration says now.
Raven,
Glad to see you aren’t buying it. I’m sure some others have bought it and are distressed over it. That’s what the goal is. Basically its to terrorize us.

March 9th, 2007 at 4:36 pmNot to worry about “climate change” (doesn’t that sound far less alarming than “global warming”…?)….my evangelical, braindead (is that a redundant description) neighbor tells me. “The Lord is Coming soon. It is all planned. His will be done”.
So, folks, there you have it. Don’t sweat it. Its all taken care of. Just break out your bibles or whatever other science fiction you prefer, and wait.

March 9th, 2007 at 4:56 pmFor Truth and Raven, I don’t know if this is a trick of rachel’s or not but I prefer to go with the idea of just in case, show caring and tell them to get help..I am not traped or feel responsible for what any one doe’s especielly on a political thred..
It seems to me sane or not many people do not tell the truth on this kind of forum….Many make up lies of grandure or spout junk just to get a rise out of the rest of us….My stand alway’s comes from the love side not fear…..Blessings
March 9th, 2007 at 5:06 pmIf Rachel really wanted someone to intervene, she sure wouldn’t post her problems here. No one is in the postition to intervene. She would call someone else. But she’s probably used up those people.
March 9th, 2007 at 5:13 pmFor Truth..”But she’s probably used up those people.” Good point and also makes a point for siding on the ” what if” it is true and this is a last stand..
I am not by polar, but many have said I am crazy, in jest and my answer is ” I have to be”…One other thing I do know what it is to be suacidal, from grief……I also know what it take’s to come back from that thinking with no one helping and no drug’s….I hope it is not true..And i hope she get’s help…Blessings
March 9th, 2007 at 5:40 pmSharon,

March 9th, 2007 at 5:57 pmThank you, Sharon for your wise counsel.
March 9th, 2007 at 8:39 pmIt is with the realization that I can not determine whether a call for help is genuine or not, that I must not ridicule or make fun of a call for help.
Frankly, I have no sympathy for “poseurs” who want attention through suicide talk…NONE. I saw too many people get killed in Vietnam for NO good reason, to really give a damn about anyone who is too WEAK to deal with whatever comes your way, particularly when there are so many resources for them, that were most definetely NOT available to kids who wanted to LIVE. And to bring your bullshit suicide talk into a forum where NO ONE is in a position to do anything for you, is pure crap. I stand by what I said. Let her die for all I care.
March 9th, 2007 at 8:40 pmNonsense, Rachel has been proved time and again to be a bullshit artist. I don’t think she even exists except as a persona invented by a troll in order to derail the conversation.

March 10th, 2007 at 2:30 amThe science of Global Climate change is sound. There is no real debate that it is occurring. The only question is why. And that question is being asked by the Big Oil companies, not by any titled scientists.
The entire world is marching together on this because they know we need to do something to help fix it. Maybe we can and maybe we can’t. However, to simply ignore it because you are an idiot isn’t going to help at all. If there is even the slightest chance that man is causing this to happen then we should be working overtime to try and fix it. That is why we are the smartest animal on the planet.
I think every person who thinks Global Climate change isn’t occurring should be taken on a trip to Alaska where the permafrost is melting for the first time in anyone’s memory. As a result, there roads are falling apart, houses are being destroyed, and they have lost access to their hunting grounds that they depend on for their very survival.
If this is the Republican thought process on this issue, then they are way behind the public as a whole. I thought they were elected work for the people, not against them. They are always saying how the majority rules, and the majority of Americans want this issue addressed now.

March 10th, 2007 at 9:58 amThe long term solution for ethenol is to use the right crop. And the right crop is? Industrial Hemp!
1. It grows extremely fast. 3 harvests per year in a temperate climate.
2. It needs no fertilizer or pesticides.
3. It’s a weed. It can grow in depleted ruined soil.
4. It can grow in hard pan with deep roots that restore the soil for other crops.
5. It has massive amounts of cellulose.
6. The fiber can be used to produce all kinds of products.
7. Its seed has high nutritive value including protein and all essential oils.
8. It will not compete with food crops except by adding another one.
It’s way past time to make this harmless plant legal.
