Ex-Navy official protests Swift Boat funder’s nomination.

Today in the Washington Times, Wade Sanders — former deputy assistant secretary of the Navy, decorated former swift boat skipper, and combat veteran — has an op-ed attacking President Bush’s nomination of Sam Fox to be ambassador to Belgium: “And as a military man, it doesn’t matter much who is being attacked — John McCain, Max Cleland, John Kerry, or Jack Murtha — I just don’t believe that assaults on the military records of veterans belong in our politics.”

It’s just business as usual for this administration.

Mass impeachment of all the corrupt and criminal elements of this administration (not just Cheney, despite Time magazine’s attempt to paint him as the sole bad apple in the bunch) is what is is going to take to restore our country. Subsequent prosecution of said elements in the Hague for War Crimes is what it is going to take to restore our country’s standing in the world.

We have a choice here. One choice is easy…just do nothing. Ignore the telltale signs, and allow our once-great republic to metamorphose into the Empire the neocons dream of. Just remember…empires have a habit of falling.

The other choice is not easy. It’s hard. It involves us actually getting up off the couch and taking action to ensure that our country remains the democratic republic our Founding Fathers worked so hard to create. They risked everything, and in their day, they were called rebels, traitors, and terrorists, but this didn’t stop them from establishing a system of government that insured that they would be free, and their children after them would enjoy the same freedoms. Can we honestly do any less?

When bush gets through, if allowed to continue, every representative of the government abroad will be a little John Bolton, incapable of diplomacy and guaanteed to make our former alliies even more pissed off than they are now. Plus which the “ambassadors” will become conduits for crooked deals between monetary interests and foreign criminals.

…does that matter? This isn’t about Wade Sanders. This is about Chimpy nominating a supporter of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a morally repugnant right-wing smear machine, to the office of Ambassador to Belgium.

I understand that it’s sheer instinct for mouth-breathers like you to go after the messenger…after all, that’s what the Swift Boaters themselves are all about. But it’s sloppy and stupid. You’ll need to do much better, Patrick, and I just don’t see that potential in you. Sorry.

Bush and his cronies continue to attack the true heroes that served our country so diligently; who stepped up and risked their lives so that we may live in freedom. All the while, Bush and Cheney pulled every string and called in every favor available to them through their birth into the privileged class to avoid putting themselves in any danger whatsoever and to avoid any sacrifice at all for our country.

I know the president can appoint whomever he wants to certain positions, but geezus, shouldn’t they at least be minimally qualified to do the frickin’ job? This crap about “serves at the pleasure of the President” needs to be changed to “serves at the pleasure of the People.”

Our government needs some serious reform to prevent something like the last six years from EVER happening again.

It’s worth pointing out that all of the attacks have come from the republican, and it didn’t matter to them even when the veteran was a republican, only that he was an opponent.

It looks like morality and ethics are on the rise and becoming popular, again. Winning “at any cost” is on the way out, along with the Repubs who embrace that extinct and destructive theology. They worked so hard for ruination.

    Frequently Given Answers

What is TripmasterMonkey.com? It’s a cheeky news magazine for the Asia-savvy. Yellow journalism served up fresh—that’s our goal. On the site, you’ll find plenty of pop culture, offbeat topics, unusual views on U.S. and world news, and—as we ramp up—more graphic content (comics, photo essays, illustrated stories). In short, it’s a place for some fun and titillation. A lychee-martini lounge on the Web.

What’s with the name? The name comes from Maxine Hong Kingston’s novel about a hipster playwright, a modern-day incarnation of the fabled Monkey King, who spread Buddhism from India to China. Pretty trippy, right? As we see it, tripmasters are people who connect different worlds and cultures and ideas. People like you. (BTW, we’re not affiliated with Maxine Hong Kingston, the novel, or the defunct band of the same name.)

Who are you guys? Most of us are young journalists from the ranks of CNN, The New York Times, Bloomberg News, and magazines like Ms, New York, Glamour, and World Press Review. Many of us first met in various parts of Asia but now call New York City home.

Why a Web magazine? Seeing connections that exist across cultures—that’s what we’re all about. We love the borderless nature of the Web. It’s totally cosmic, man. A way to link to what’s Out There. The casual, ephemeral nature of the Web is perfect for a light but tasty sampling of Asian-accented news.

How are you funded? Excellent question. TMM is a volunteer effort, though it’s not technically a nonprofit. We’re funded through private donations, ads, and the sale of branded merchandise.

So, how do you define Asia? We follow the Asia Society’s definition: “The area from Japan to Iran, and from Central Asia to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.” Though, given our namesake, we tend to focus on countries where the Monkey King managed to spread the Buddha’s teachings to a large segment of the population.

Um, you really like monkeys. Well, Tripmaster Stephen Hawking probably said it best: “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”

Okay, you guys are completely bananas. Can I write for you? Sure, submit to the monkey.

  35. TripMaster Monkey says:

  38. Barfly says:

Well, I hope McCain paid attention to the whole swiftboat saga, ’cause it’s now bearing down on him (from Raw Story):

Two familiar faces will soon be dogging Senator John McCain on the campaign trail, as activist Vietnam Veterans Jerry Kiley and Ted Sampley resume a campaign they have conducted for years against the Arizona Republican and former prisoner of war.

Jerry Kiley filed papers last week to establish the nonpartisan group Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain. “When people truly get to know him, there’s no possibility they’ll consider him for president of the United States,” says Kiley, who served in the Army and completed the Internal Revenue Service paperwork to establish the “527″ group.

RAW STORY spoke last week with Kiley, as well as Ted Sampley, a North Carolina-based publisher who has been harshly criticizing McCain for more than 10 years. Sampley teamed up with Kiley in 2004 to found a similar group that targeted Senator John Kerry as he ran for president. They see McCain as an apologist for Vietnam’s Communist government who sold out fellow POWs and servicemen missing in action from America’s lengthy war in Southeast Asia.

“We know him best because we’ve dealt with him over the years, and we know how he’s acted,” Kiley said. “We’re taking no salaries, we do this voluntarily, and every penny will go into defeating him.”

    [snip]

  39. Patrick1 says:

That John Kerry lied to the Senate, and to the public, is beyond dispute. His testimony that American servicemen “razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan” was based on fabrications from individuals who weren’t even veterans, individuals whom Kerry knew at the time were not really veterans. John Kerry organized and used fraudulent veterans to prepare fraudulent testimony, and delivered that fraudulent testimony to the U.S. Senate. Senator John F. Kerry is a documented liar. He is on film telling his lies. Yet to hear our leftist historians tell it, Senator Kerry is the victim of the Swift Boat Veterans, who ran a television advertisement featuring Kerry’s 1971 testimony in order to show the American public just what sort of “military hero” John F. Kerry really was. The public was certainly never going to find out about Kerry’s meetings with the North Vietnamese from the news media, which had studiously avoided saying a single word about Kerry’s history as an anti-war activist.

Mr. Sanders would have us believe that the Swift Vets’ efforts represented “one of the nastiest, dirtiest negative campaign ads of the entire 2004 presidential campaign, if not in presidential history.” Apparently, telling the truth about Democratic candidates for office is a terrible and nasty thing. For make no mistake: virtually everything the Swift Vets said about John Kerry is documented. If there is a dirty, nasty, dishonest campaign afoot, it is the one by revisionist historians like Wade Sanders to prove — by louder assertion — that John Kerry was horribly wronged… instead of the liar and poseur that he actually was and is.

You mean the point about all the swiftliar distortions? Just about everyone I knew that went to Vietnam was GLAD Kerry came back against that war. And do some research. The swiftliars were, well lying for bulsh. A draft evader.

  43. pitman says:

As a Vietnam veteran, I’ll never understand these Swift Boat clowns for discrediting their own Vietnam brothers. Why don’t they focus their energies on real cowards. For instance right wing has-been rocker and America’s “Ultimate Coward” Ted Nugent who admitted to urinating and defecating in his pants for an entire week before reporting for his draft board physical to avoid duty to his country during the Vietnam war. Now he earns as much as $25,000 a night preaching about patriotism, free speech and his right to bear arms. This pile of cowardice is truly the epitome of hypocrisy.
