Yesterday at the House Armed Services Committee hearing on veterans care, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) attempted to stand out from the rest of Congress and argue that the conditions in Building 18 weren’t that bad. Instead of criticizing the cockroach infestation, he said, “I was glad to know that those cockroaches were belly up. It suggested to me that at least someone was spraying for them.”
He also tried to blame the soldiers for the conditions, stating, “And, of course, if you leave food around in a motel room or a dorm room at a college, you’re going to get some mice show up at some point in time.” Watch it:
Gingrey further blamed the media — specifically the Washington Post — for the fallout, saying he was “shocked” that Army Secretary Francis Harvey and Walter Reed commander Gen. George Weightmann were fired. “[A]sk the Washington Post whose head should roll, I think [President Bush] probably would be…the only satisfaction.” He then added, “[L]et’s try to take some of the politics aside and some of the rhetoric, and try to solve the problem.”

Transcript:
I want to say for the record that, Mr. Chairman, that, um, I have been to Building 18. I have been to Walter Reed on a number of occasions, but specifically in regard to this issue went to take a look first-hand.
Having grown up in a motel, when I was going to medical school and living in one of the rooms, when I saw this old Walter Reed Motor Inn, it really reminded me a lot of, Mr. Chairman, of a, of the motel that my parents had in Augusta, Georgia. It’s not a five-star hotel, make no mistake about it, but it’s not a flophouse. It’s not a dump. It’s not a dive. It needs some work, no question about it. I’m not making excuses, of course. And when I read the Washington Post report I was glad to know that those cockroaches were belly up. It suggested to me that at least someone was spraying for them, Mr. Chairman.
And, of course, if you leave food around in a motel room or a dorm room at a college, you’re going to get some mice show up at some point in time. But there’s no question that there’s a problem. I’ve heard some of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle suggest that specific heads should roll. I don’t know that, ah — I was a little bit shocked, quite honestly, that the Secretary of the Army was relieved of his command and the commander at Walter Reed, General Weightmann was relieved of his command and a change has been made there.
I don’t know what comes next, but I would guess if you ask, since General Schoomaker has had to recuse himself, ask the Washington Post whose head should roll I think it probably would be the Commander-in-Chief, would be the only satisfaction, and that would be President Bush.
But here again, let’s try to take some of the politics aside and some of the rhetoric, and try to solve the problem.
Blah blah, lie, blah blah, lie, blah blah, lie, lie, blah, lie, blah blah blah, lie.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:13 pmI agree Bush should be held accountable!
March 9th, 2007 at 2:14 pmF*ck you, Gingrey.
I sincerely mean that.
F*ck you.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:16 pmHe also tried to blame the soldiers for the conditions, stating, “And, of course, if you leave food around in a motel room or a dorm room at a college, you’re going to get some mice show up at some point in time.â€
Oh no you didn’t. You did not just blame the troops.
But here again, let’s try to take some of the politics aside and some of the rhetoric, and try to solve the problem.
Great idea. Let’s start by yanking your sorry ass out of the hearing room, you dumb f*ck!
March 9th, 2007 at 2:16 pmWhy do the troops hate the troops?
March 9th, 2007 at 2:20 pmWouldn’t it be the job of the janitors, nurses, aides, etc of the hospital to remove any extra food left by a bed ridden soldier? Nothing like blaming the troops to save your own political friends.

March 9th, 2007 at 2:25 pmWhy do Repugnicans not only hate our freedoms but hate our troops? I hope every redneck in Georgia who voted for this moron is proud of him. Nitwits like this clown are one of the main reasons I gladly moved from Georgia.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:25 pmGOP = Dangerously stupid people
March 9th, 2007 at 2:25 pmWell, they should quit complaining, and get a mop & bucket and clean up the place, who cares if they have amputations. Excuses, excuses. While they’re at it, they should go out and buy some construction materials and fix the place up.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:26 pmROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heckuva Job, Republican’ts!!!!!
Maybe it was your dog that ate the 8 billion dollars in cash you sent to Iraq, too….
March 9th, 2007 at 2:27 pmI wonder how do you allow such morons to represent U.S citizens .Do they pass some sort of mental test prior to taking the oath?
March 9th, 2007 at 2:27 pmThis a**hole is a despicable piece of sh*t. A loser like him should be forced to police all food at Walter Reed Hospital for the next several months!
March 9th, 2007 at 2:28 pm#6: That would require that the private company that got the contract actually spend money to hire a sufficient number of janitors, nurses, aides, etc. to do the job. You don’t expect them to take that kind of a hit to their bottom line, do you?
March 9th, 2007 at 2:29 pmIt’s incredible. How can you be such a shameless ass-kisser to the president and your party that you would go so far as to blame the troops for the conditions of the hospital they’re provided with? If it’s the troops’ fault, why aren’t we seeing the same thing at all of the military hospitals? Is it just one rotten bunch of patients that happened to end up at Walter Reed? This asswipe can’t be serious. Did he see food thrown on the floor? Can he back up this idiotic claim with anything besides his sick imagination? I hope he runs into one of these patients and they just deck him.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:30 pmdon’t get too sassy there, Hector - I’ve watched Univision before…..
March 9th, 2007 at 2:31 pmHector,
He’s from the south, and now you see the reason there are incest laws now. But still the gene pool in the south will be screwed up for 200 years.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:33 pmThrowing the wounded veterans under the bus. Nice. Turns out anything not going well is their fault too, along with the “liberal” media, the terrorist-appeasing left, and the troop-hating war critics.
It goes to show there is no low Bush supporters won’t stoop to in order to defend this administration.
Specially nice touch is Riley’s remark at the end of his drivel: “let’s try to take some of the politics aside and some of the rhetoric”.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:35 pmDamn those wounded soldiers. If they would only get off their lazy asses and clean up their rooms then there would not be the squalor that draws rodents and insects. Better yet, if they were winning this war for us then there wouldn’t be so many wounded anyway.
Oh yeah, and slavery was the fault of them nigg…uh, colored folks too.
/redneck attitude
P.S. Mr. Gringey, I think I might just have to take a trip down to Georgia and have a little chat with you, veteran to veteran.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:37 pmRiley!?
I meant Gingrey… ssheeshhh
March 9th, 2007 at 2:39 pmRep. Gingrey, Does leaving food in your room create black mold? Does leaving food in your room cause a soldier to lay in his own urine?
Someone, please drag the “Distinguised Gentleman” from GA. out side and beat the s*it out of him.
Rep. Gingrey, F*CK YOU, YOU F*CKING F*CK. Just GO F*CK YOURSELF YOU F*CKING F*CKHEAD.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:40 pmnice little heartless bastard eh? Where are the heroes from the 60’s that took to the streets during the Vietnam war and swayed public opinion? all we have today are lazy apathetic folls in the citizenry and the congress they elect.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:44 pmAnother Repuke who hates our troops.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:44 pmHum….I don’t know who the hell Rachel K. above is or what she is doing posting suicide notes here. Seems very odd to ask for help on a website of this kind. I hope she got attention from a more suitable resource that may be more help to her than a political discussion site. I hope that those who are profoundly lonely or depressed find other places for help and companionship since I think it risky to participate in highly charged political discussions if you are that vulnerable.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:45 pmThis lonliness is killing me slowly. I cannot take this anymore.
I will leave you now.

I could possibly believe this, if it weren’t for the sick stuff you attributed to others, stealing screen names, and plagiarizing material from writers.
Adios - but I’m betting you’re still here next week.

Sorry, I just looked at his webpage, no mention of military service.
You would be one vet short in that conversation.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:47 pm…that’s right : blame the victim.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:48 pmOk, let me understand this. The soldiers go to Walter Reed because they are injured and need medical attention…
They are patients at the hospital not residents, they are there to be taken care of…..
How is it the Soldiers fault? They didn’t ask to be injured.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:49 pmPull you head out Mr. Gringey and actually hear what you are saying!
Comment by hacker bob
What’s the matter, Bob? Having trouble swallowing the party line? Gingrey is simply voicing what republicans believe; that any problems the vets have are caused by them.
But I’ll bet Gingrey’s car has the requisite number of “support the troops” stickers on it.

Thank you! I hope I got my point across. I tend to be a little on the subtle side.
I will be sending the Rep. an e-mail when I get home, from my home e-mail account, so as not to get in trouble at work for it. I encourage others to do the same.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:50 pmI bet that clown has cockroaches and rats in his cheesy Ron Jeremy mustache.

Sorry, you have me labeled as a strick “party line” type guy. That is your mistake. Only an idiot supports something in the name of “The Party”. I do tend to have a more conservative way of viewing things in life and politics. Treatment like this a$$hole is displaying is the antithesis of true conservative values.
I am not much for orthodoxy.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:58 pmOnce again, BushCO and its affiliates turn a blind eye to the festering sores they inflict and inflame and blame the victims. The “administration” is clearly going for broke. Pelosi, put impeachment “back on the table!” After all, it wouldn’t be the first time the US government did something it said it would never do…
March 9th, 2007 at 2:59 pmRep. Gingrey, F*CK YOU, YOU F*CKING F*CK. Just GO F*CK YOURSELF YOU F*CKING F*CKHEAD.

I second that remark.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:59 pmSend Stephen Colbert back in there to eviscerate this idiot on television, we can YouTube it, and ensure that his tenure in Congress will be brief.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:01 pmOne of the requirements to be a Republican is that you hate humanity. A second requirement that you are an idiot.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:02 pmI hope every redneck in Georgia who voted for this moron is proud of him. Nitwits like this clown are one of the main reasons I gladly moved from Georgia.
Considering they voted for Saxby Chamblis over Max Clelland, those rednecks probably are proud of Gingrey, Gingrich and all those other Georgian hypocrites.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:03 pmI tend to be a little on the subtle side.
Comment by hacker bob — March 9, 2007 @ 2:50 pm
So subtle, in fact, I had to re-read your post, and then read it again ;-)
On a more serious note, this is a logical, natural development in the toxic environment this White House has fostered: No accountability, no oversight, and if caught re-handed, quickly blame someone else. Rinse. Repeat.
It is not the first time someone toeing the party line tries to deflect the blame. This instance only happens to be far more egregious. It’s so out there I am still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that Rep Gingrey had the gall to even think of saying it. I am stunned.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:03 pmWhat a piece of work this man is. He says we all need to take politics out of the argument….as he injects politics into the argument.
I hope the people in his home district saw or heard this sorry display to downplay the foul conditions our wounded vets are subjected to.
“Support the troops” is just a political slogan to these scumbags. It obviously means nothing to them.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:03 pmWow! Unbelievable! It’s amazing how many ways this administration can devise to take responsibility for their numerous misdeeds.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:03 pmDoes anyone have video of this?

March 9th, 2007 at 3:09 pmOur honest representatives. Hillary and Bill invaded Iraq. Obama is black or not. The troops caused their own living conditions and problems. The troops in the middle of the Iraq civil war did it to themselves. The 109 th Dem. Congress voted all the illegal laws. The CIA covert agent working in Iran to find out if they have weapons leak her name herself.
Bush Administration did nothing but try to stop the lies and the illegal invasion.
Now that the Republicans and Bush have completed the dumbing down of America so believe what ever the Dictator says. With all this support maybe Americans will keep the Dictator in charge so he can keep blaming others for his crimes and mistakes. Greed is a good thing in America for the few chosen by the Rich. Now run out and buy Jenna’s book and maybe she will write one about her drunk/drug experiences and loose sex life. That’s a girl parents can show as example of what all American girls should be like.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:11 pmDaddy Bush is still stalking Terry Hatcher as I guess his girlfriend is old now. Barbara Bush is doing great baking those cookies as her husband does other woman. George is a drunk and druggie who sleeps with Connie but has found a new bed buddy now. Laura is working hard for that extra 10 million dollars as her divorce was up dated. She walks out the day the Dictator leaves office. Laura is the smartest in the group as she has her Texas millionaire boyfriend waiting. She has a nice ranch too.

May they all rot in their own living hell!
March 9th, 2007 at 3:44 pmWhy do Repugnicans not only hate our freedoms but hate our troops?
You don’t send kids to a hellhole because you have an extremely high regard for them, and you don’t leave them there to be killed in order to protect your political ass because you love them, and you don’t have any regard for them when they come back because you never had any regard for them in the first place. They’re merely cannon fodder–political and financial investments in the congressman’s well-being.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:57 pmDid he forget to blame Bill Clinton? It’s my understanding that Republican screw-ups are all Clinton’s fault.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:58 pm“The troops should clean up their act” Said Gingrey, munching the bones of a dead rat, as he picked the cockroach legs from between his teeth.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:05 pmInteresting that TP suddenly cares about the troops. You supported a ticket in 2004 that voted against funding our troops in war and you were silent when Dick Durbin slandered them as Nazis. Gee, an objective observer might think you hate the troops.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:06 pm#58 - I did read that. I think it’s sad for Newt. He had an affair. But Clinton lied under oath and obstructed justice during a trial in which he was being sued for sexual harrassment. I am not sure Newt was ever accused of rape either, but hell, the economy was great when he was Speaker!
March 9th, 2007 at 4:10 pm#23 Bobbo, thanks for the sentiments. You and I don’t agree on a whole lot, but this is one perfecto!~
March 9th, 2007 at 4:11 pmThose that care about people in uniform (The Troops) don’t want them to get hurt. Thus, if you care about them you do not want to see them sent to areas where they might get bombed, shot at or otherwise injured or killed. So, we liberals who have opposed the bush junta’s imperialist wars have NOT changed our position. We have always supported the troops, in the best way possible. Keep them home. Don’t start any illegal wars. If it were up to me I would disband the armed forces altogether.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:11 pmThis recording should get airplay in his home district.

I didn’t label you anything, Bob. I simply pointed out that “conservative” and Republican are the same thing. There is now no differentiation. So middle-of -the roaders should decide which side of the street they prefer to walk on, unless they want to carry the full weight of their conservative convictions. If your diatribe had included a repudiation of all conservative philosophy, it would have been more convincing. But at this late date, you no longer have the leeway to pick and choose the good from the bad, and say,”I’m for this, but against that.” Let’s have the mea culpas, Bob.
How many other “conservatives” in the House jumped up to decry Gingrey’s message? Any?

March 9th, 2007 at 5:50 pmPesticides are poisons, nerve agents. Were the soldiers removed from the premises when the spraying took place. No human being should be exposed to spraying and its residue for 24 to 48 hours afterwards. I think Gingrey is showing even more disrespect for the soldiers with that comment.
March 9th, 2007 at 5:52 pmIf you have ever watched CSPAN, you would know this is typical of Gingrey. He utters worthless, hollow, bigoted party-slanted drivel designed to agitate people of sense. Just as Bush says, “they are entitled to their opinion.” Gingrey’s opinions speak volumes about the type of person he is.

Don’t try to change the subject. Do you think the troops are to blame for the conditions in that shithole they were sent to? Yes or no? Don’t dance around it. Don’t give us that “Well Clinton…” bullshit. Try to stay on topic. I realize it’s your job to try to deflect criticism away from the Republicans, regardless of how stupid they are and how much they deserve it, but that’s just tough shit. Either answer the question or get the f*ck out of here.

March 9th, 2007 at 6:57 pmI prefer to think of the belly-up cockroach as a metaphor representative of what this chest-beating, chicken-hawking, war-mongering, penny-pinching, corner-cutting, self-assured, holier-than-thou administration REALLY thinks about the guys brave enough to go to war!
March 9th, 2007 at 7:09 pmI didn’t label you anything, Bob. I simply pointed out that “conservative†and Republican are the same thing. There is now no differentiation. So middle-of -the roaders should decide which side of the street they prefer to walk on, unless they want to carry the full weight of their conservative convictions.
I carry the weight of MY convictions, not my parties convictions. The beautiful thing about this country is that you can take what you feel is the best and discard what you feel is the worst. ANYONE that walks in lock-step with “the Party” (either side) is a fool. Anyone that can not point out the faults in their own party is a bigger fool. Sorry, I do not buy into the “all Republicans are evil” or the “all Democrats are evil” trap. There are good and bad in both parties. It is called thinking for yourself. Try it, it’s refreshing.
If your diatribe had included a repudiation of all conservative philosophy, it would have been more convincing.
Sorry, not all conservative philosophy is bad. There are things that the members (leaders) of the Republican Party have done that are bad things. But that means that we (conservatives) need to work within our party to “purge” them. Remember, the Republican party was the party of Civil Rights and ending slavery.
But at this late date, you no longer have the leeway to pick and choose the good from the bad, and say,â€I’m for this, but against that.†Let’s have the mea culpas, Bob.
No, actually I still have the leeway. Again, I can think for myself and decide what I want to support. Just as you can. When there is a mea culpa due, I give it. But I will not apologize for other peoples actions. (You must be a Hillary supporter)
How many other “conservatives†in the House jumped up to decry Gingrey’s message? Any?

March 9th, 2007 at 7:38 pmHacker Bob, the reason today’s republicans don’t seem like conservatives to you is that they are not conservatives. They are corporatists, which, as Benito Mussolini pointed out, is just another name for fascists.

March 10th, 2007 at 1:28 ami note from gingry’s website bio he has never served in the military. this gives him a unique perspective to blame the soldiers for the conditions at Walter Reed.

March 10th, 2007 at 11:11 amOh, when one conservative gets smart we’ll comment on that too.
To begin im a prior service buddhist soldier who reenlisted in the infantry again after five years as a civilian and student leaving my children, whom i love sooo much. without an enlistment bonus or any college money. Im a pacifist but i will go to war for my brothers. I cannot be disrespected. Army hospitals are old buildings. Soldiers do not receive pampered care like civilians, i know i was wounded in iraq. And yes it is partly the soldiers fault that food is lying around. Imagine being in iraq, then wounded and stressed out in a hospital with less rules and regulations. Soldiers would most certainly relax and become undisciplined, especially since there not being trained properly in basic. Couple that with a system at its saturation point in terms of mental health support and you get walter reed. Soldiers are warriors and warriors cannot be coddled. OOooh cockroaches. The first cockroackes i ever say were in the army, my barracks room was located on top of a dining facility in ft bragg. Conditions in other parts of the world are wayyyyyy worse, trust me ive been around. There isnt enough money to go around, starving people need more help, children need more help, truly poor and weak need more help. i can live with cockroaches (theyre just living things) if other living things get the help and money they need.
March 10th, 2007 at 11:44 amAs a retired Navy nurse, I would be very surprised if there were any nurses assigned to bldg 18. During the Viet Nam area, I was responsible for covering the outlying med hold wards on the week-ends (in addition to the inpatient wards I also covered). In addition, there was a master at arms assigned to each ward. We were responsible for checking on all patients awaiting medical boards, making sure their environment was clean and safe, etc, and reporting back our findings to our supervisors. Commanding Officer inspections were conducted on a weekly basis (conducted in each and every patient care area by a senior officer and/or the CO himself, who at that time, was a Rear Admiral in the Medical Corps). Believe me, failing one of those “white glove” inspections was the quickest way to ruin your day, to say nothing of your career! And yes, all patients who were able were required to participate, ie, keeping their immediate environment neat, since the hospital was considered their temporary assignment, but this only applied to those individuals who were deemed by the doctor to be able to participate. Needless to say, we had no vermin, roaches, black mold, or holes in the walls, floors, ceilings, etc! My heart aches for anyone living in such deplorable conditions. Oh, by the way, I was born and raised in Va, and am now living in the SC. Not everyone who lives in the south agrees with these neocons. In fact, I like to think I’m just here doing progressive “missionary” work. It’s a hard job, but somebody has to do it! And please don’t forget, many of our military men and women are from the south, too, so please don’t denigrate ALL of us by labeling southerners as uneducated or stupid just because there is a majority of conservatives voting here. Many of us feel we are not well represented by our elected officials, so we blog, sign petitions, and recommend web sites like this one to our friends, family, and neighbors, hoping to spread the word.

March 10th, 2007 at 12:11 pmThanks for the great post. But as Americans WE owe it to our soldiers to provide them with the care we would expect for ourselves. Having worked in hospitals as a nurses aid I can tell you no civilian picks up after themselves.
And if veterans are getting crappy care so that Haliburton can make even bigger profits then that is capitalism run amok.
And thanks for your service. Progressives respect and appreciate what you do and are working for peace and your welfare no matter what neocons tell you.

March 10th, 2007 at 12:15 pmAnd thanks for your post and srevice. Eloquently said. I only worked as a nurses aid in civilian hospital and can tell you somebody there with a sore throat wouldn’t pick up their own kleenex. Well except my mother, lol.
I live in Illinois in an all Republican district so I can sympathise with that aspect too. My dear congresswoman has her link disabled so she doesn’t even take email from residents. No wonder I’m disgruntled.
But when veterans don’t feel they should get quality care or complain it breaks my heart.
Thanks again.
Comment by donna craft — March 10, 2007 @ 12:05 pm
Thanks, Donna.
I believe things were a little different years ago BEFORE Rumsfeld and the Pentagon outsourced everything possible to profit-oriented corporations.
The conditions at WR are unconscionable, everyone agrees, but I understand these kinds of abuses are rampant. Problems dealing with a beaucracy are certainly nothing new, but people dealing with people have the ability to feel compassion and try to help where they can, corporations are non-persons and they look at only the bottom line: “profit.”
BTW, I think sometime during the Reagan administration (?) the IRS deemed that corporations could be viewed as “persons” and entitled to similar privileges. So, for tax purposes, corporations live and breathe - but when it comes to people, they are a stack of bricks.
March 10th, 2007 at 12:29 pmOops! I meant Viet Nam era, not area, since I was serving stateside at that time, but we were receiving many med-evacs at the Navy Hospital in Oakland, Calif. Didn’t want to give the wrong impression. I joined in ‘69 and retired after Desert Storm in ‘91, but didn’t serve in theater in either one. As bad as the problem is with bldg 18, it’s only the tip of the iceberg. Med hold is analogus to military purgatory. You can’t go back to active duty and you can’t be discharged until you get a disability rating, so you are basically in limbo, and there is no one to advocate for the service member. So, unless you or your family know your way around the “system”, you are at the mercy of the Pentagon and the V.A. When I was getting my disability rating, I had to go to the V.A. to start the procedure, and was then sent to various and sundry contract doctors (specialists) all over the Charleston area. Fortunately, I had friends to help, was familiar with the system, and was mobile, so was able to navigate the system, but many vets are not so lucky. I’m not complaining about the people in the system. I was treated very well by each and everyone of them. It’s the system that’s the problem. We definitely need ombudsmen assigned to med hold companies to do nothing but advocate for the service personnel. Personally, I think these people should be either active duty or retired military medical personnel with knowledge of the system (and no, I’m not looking for a job!), but it is very difficult to navigate through the burecratic maze that is military and V.A. medicine without some hands on experience.

March 10th, 2007 at 4:44 pmwhat a humanitarian this person is, god where do these slimes come from?
March 10th, 2007 at 6:52 pmGingrey apparently hasn’t gotten the “official” explanation for the roaches and mice and everything nice situation at Walter Reed. The cockroaches were imported to feed the mice, which were brought in to be fuzzy little fun playmates for the patients. The thinking is that the mice are needed to entertain the patients because low staffing cuts down so much on real human contact. And after all, mice can’t do any real damage to prosthetics, so it’s all good. Now do you understand?
March 10th, 2007 at 7:15 pmI just find the hypocrisy of the Republican Party astonishing. Democrats are apparently “soft on defense,” and the only person who cares about the United States military are Republican conservatives they would have you believe. But isn’t it interesting that the fallout over the denial of coverage to returning troops and the incredible stories of neglect and poor conditions stemming from the Washington post uncovering of the abuses at Walter Reed worsened under a Republican White House, a Republican House of Representatives and a Republican Senate.
The one thing that humors me about some Republicans (depending on the day it helps me fly into rages as well), is listening to them try to do damage control on these kinds of inexcusable issues. To listen to Congressman “Dingy” Gingrey make excuses for the substandard conditions at Walter Reed, it is clear as day that this is one of the latest examples of Republicans trying to do damage control. The comparison to him growing up in a motel in Augusta, GA growing up to a medical facility for wounded soldiers who put their lives on the line to defend this country - is an abomination. “Let’s put the politics and rhetoric aside to solve the problem.” In other words, let’s not talk too much or too loud on this issue so the American people can see what hypocrites the Republican caucus are. If Republicans were as serious about caring for the military they all wouldn’t have needed a Washington Post exclusive to know that Walter Reed’s facilities and leadership was in need of a major overhaul. As uncovered with testimony before Congress, government agencies had report after report of the facility being subpar in the treatment of certain ailments, as well as having poor conditions. This is a real travesty. And to have this Congressman make excuses for this and encourage people to push it under the rug is an embarrassment for Democrats and Republicans alike. I hope his constituents are watching…because if that’s the best representation you can find, you ought to put your house up for sale and move to another district. Unless of course…you’re living in a motel.
March 10th, 2007 at 10:30 pmNext it will be the troops fault that we are losing in Iraq!
March 11th, 2007 at 1:03 amI am sick and tired of wounded soldiers using their amputations as an excuse not to do a little housecleaning.

March 12th, 2007 at 4:05 am30 kids a day are born at military hospitals……balboa in san diego….think they get a private room, well your nuts…. you get a little room with a curtain and a bassanet…. they might watch your baby while you sleep if you put it outside the door…….and they might not…..its no piece of cake… you have to drink 4 quarts of water, and eat a sack lunch before you can go to that room, that has ten other crying babys in….. so if you think these hospitals are great try again…. your are treated like cows….you are all fools if you are planning on blaming bush for their problems….wake up people…..no military hospital is great….they have been this way for years…….
