From the “Caught on Tape Dept”..

Congressman David Obey (D-Wi) caught on tape yelling at a US Marines mother when she asked him to vote against the newest suppliment for Iraq.

“Voting ‘NO’ on this bill will not stop the war in Iraq. It is time the stupid liberals realized that”-D.Obey

  2. ChildrenofLir says:

Such a loss not to have one more right-wing idiot fulminating on CNN about nothing for far too many minutes. Hours roll by and CNN repeats the same trivial half-baked propaganda bits for the White House over and over and over. I stopped watching eons ago.

So D. Obey is going to introduce a bill cutting the funds for Bush’s farce.

  7. james k. sayre says:

Hmm, so the fascist propaganda network, CNN (Corporate Nazi Noise). won’t be employing T. Dale DeLay? Why, is he not shrill enough for them? Maybe T. Dale DeLay needs to restart up his lovely Internet blog. (Oh, maybe it is still on the web, in its Reich-censored form… I haven’t bother to check it out recently.)

After a year and two months sabbatical from cable or satellite TV, I finally have returned to samplying the modern, corporate world with the satellite services of DishTV’s Top 100 offerings. Fortunately, that package doesn’t include “Fox News.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t include MSNBC, so I will have to continue to live without Keith O. and his fine comments.

Also, DishTV’s Top 100 channels includes no movie channels, so you have to pony up more monthly fees for those…

    Cheers.

Then D.Obey needs to get his ass out on the floor of the house and make it happen some other way. Either he show us why Americans are dieing in Iraq and what the hell that has to do with 911 or he needs to realize he is screwing over innocent people. He is the one with the power. Its his responsibility.

First “yelling” at the Marine’s mother is a huge stretch and shee doesn’t seem to take his comments as offensive at all. Plus he explained to her that he is introducing a bill to end the war which would make the funding of the war moot. As he explains in the video. Did you watch the video bob or just jump from Drudge to here?

    3) Was his tone appropriate to use with ANY constituent, much less the mother of a Marine that has served 2 tours in Iraq and is about to use his 3rd?

    4) Do you excuse bad behaviour for everyone?

I watched the video. Your isolated quote paints the Congressman in a false light.

But because you posted, I was able to see Representative Obey’s committment to ending the war, and his frustration over Republican Obstructionism.

Rep. Obey wants to fund the troops, not the war. He wants to end the authorization for the war, while providing money for body armor and medical treatment.

Question, bob, given the whole context of the conversation, why would you want to paint someone as honorable and concerned as Rep. Obey in a false light?

If he succeeds in his approach, it will save Marine’s lives. Yet you seek to demean and belittle him.

More soldiers die each and every day, with no end in sight, nor is an end planned while Bush is in office. Yet you continue to support Bush by belittling anyone who truly opposes him.

  21. Briseadh na Faire says:

    Comment by katy — March 9, 2007 @ 9:28 pm

katy, for what it is worth, I sensed the frustration of a man deeply concerned over the needless loss of life and the poor treatment of our women and men in uniform by the Bush Administration and the obstructionism by the Republican minority.

  22. Marie says:

I have found CNN’s search site is often too useless to even try.
But I did just read of Delay not going to work for CNN on another website for TV news.
When is that phony going to trial – or is the prosecution dragging it out so Delay can have that constantly hanging over his head.
He was indicted – the trial will have to start sometime!

  23. Marie says:

Katy, I agree with BnF. Obey apologized for his abruptness and improper language, but I do believe it was the result of his frustration in dealing with the war issue.
I am in total sympathy with the mother, certainly, but efforts to bring the war to a close should be directed at Repugs who stand behind Bush, and want to drag this out until the Dems take over in 2009.

  24. ChildrenofLir says:

Obey was angry cause he’s too scared to stand up and do the right thing and defund the war, which is the only way to stop it. He’s lying to himself. Rather than admit the truth he curses at the Marine mother. What a freakin coward he is.

  25. ChildrenofLir says:

    Marie
You are so totallly wrong. Efforts to stop the war need to directed at the hold out Dems. The Dems have the majority Marie. Get real.

  26. katy says:

Ummm, did you miss the part where REPUBLICANS FILIBUSTERED A NON-BINDING RESOLUTION that would have embarassed the President by opposing his “surge”?

Nearly 200 Americans have died while the Republican minority protects their President from any potential embarassment.

  28. Marie says:

We do NOT have the majority we need in the Senate to get anything passed. That is where we need to direct our efforts.

  29. ChildrenofLir says:

    Marie
It’s the holdout Dems that are the problem. The bluedogs and the cowards who won’t stand up for the troops. It’s the Dems taking money from AIPAC and hiding behind a pretense of ‘finding a strategy for success’ and other bs.

  30. hacker bob says:

    Comment by Briseadh na Faire — March 9, 2007 @ 9:48 pm

Hey, Obey wanting to stop the war is fine. Being frustrated is understandable. His conduct in this situation is questionable to say the least.

Instead of exercising his frustrations where they belong, in Congress and at the Administration, he blasts the mother of a Marine? Does that make any sense to you?

Go ahead and continue to excuse bad behavior. Remember, he was expressing his frustrations at “the stupid liberals” that do not understand the complexities of the issue.

As for my “belittling” someone as “honorable” as Obey:
    1) I would never treat the mother of a Marine the way he did.
    2) How were his actions honorable? His frustration is with the ADMIN and he takes it out on this woman.
    3) It has nothing to do with whether or not I support Bush. If Clinton, Gore, or Mickey Mouse were President and any member of Congress did this in this situation, I would feel the same.

  31. ChildrenofLir says:

Obey should have been yelling at him self for being a coward and not doing what he know is the right thing to save the lives of the troops. Withdraw the funding, and force them to come home. Nothing else will stop Bush from continuing to slaughter more and more innnocent people.

  32. dlet says:

What I saw from the video was a congressman that is frustrated. With explaining again and again what his position is. Granted I don’t agree with everything he says and his tone was stern. But to say he was yellling at the women is a false comment. His position is also misrepresented by those who just say he won’t vote no for the supplement. Half truths are still lies when you obviously leave out important info that would change the perspective of his position. As to his behavior it was too confrontational for my values especially when she was asking a legitimate question but yelling it was not. But I guess some have to make excuses for their own bad behavior in slandering someone.

  33. ChildrenofLir says:

But to say he was yellling at the women is a false comment.

It’s not a false comment. It’s what I saw and heard. He cursed repeatedly and she stood their quietly and calmly while he ranted even more. He was using curses to stop her argument. He had no argument. Rather than admit that he cursed and flailed. It was a pathetic display of a man unwilling to admit the truth. That the only possible way to stop the war is to stop the funding. And he’s too afraid to do that. Rather than admit that he yells and curses and flails. It’s the behavior of someone in denial who won’t take responsibility. ANd it’s pathetic.

  39. ChildrenofLir says:

he is voting for the supplemental” but leaving out the fact he is co-writing a bill to end the war

I believe he mentions the bil he’s co-writing towards the end of his rant. It’s hard to tell due to the sound and his irrational patter.

He’s like Hilary, wants it both ways. Vote for the war and against it at the same time hoping no one will call him on the obvious contradiction.

When he is called on it, he curses and yells. Childish

I think the term is doublethink

  42. WaltTheMan says:

    #38 – hacker bob,
We have two people here, each at the end of their rope. Obey because of frustration and a mother because she was concerned about her child. Both reacted out of turn, but that is what happens when emotions are at issue. In my mind, Obey traipsed about 5-10% over the line that was exhibited by the mother. He did that because he sees that in spite of a Democratic majority in Congress; there is no way to override the President when margins are as slim as they are. This is especially crucial when a loyal member of the Knesset is spying on their caucus in the Senate.

  43. hacker bob says:

  45. dlet says:

    Hack,
The man explained his position quite clearly in the video. He thinks the supplemental is necessary because it funds the troops to function. At the same time he is introducing legislation to stop the war. Do you have any proof that would say that he is wrong? Anything that states that the supplemental bill is not necessary to do the things he says it is needed for? Link it or stop using it in an arguement. Personally I don’t agree with him. All funding for the armed forces should be stopped immediately. But I don’t know how the intricate workings of the funding bills works. I don’t pretend to. If you know exactly how the supplemental works and the rest of the armed forces funding exactly works please let us all know.

If the funding is stopped, we can not continue to fight. If we can not continue to fight, the American public will DEMAND that we are home NOW.

The Dem Resolution wants a withdrawl to begin by Aug of 08. That is 1 1/2 years from now. That is 1190 deaths of my brothers and sisters in arms. If the purse is closed, we can start the withdrawl sooner, reducing the numbers of deaths of the US military members AND innocent Iraqis.

If it means anything at all, I would have the same reaction if he talked to my father that way as well.

Fine you can think that way but waht was also inappropriate was to make a half truth comment on his position on the war. The way you said made it seem like he was for the war. FoxNewsish like. Tell half the story and let the people make up their minds on a half truth. Be better than that.

    g’night all. play nice.

Men don’t like to be patronized either, Robert.

Listen, I’m not saying you’re wrong to have these feelings. I’m just saying take a breath and step back a moment. The situation may already be under control.

Umm, sweetheart, I am an active duty Marine.

Really, I bet you say that to all the girls.
For a Marine you seem to lack discipline.
So you be the Marine and I’ll be the Republican.

  100. WaltTheMan says:

    #93 – hacker bob,
I watched the tape about four times and still see two people totally frustrated. I still believe that Obey lost it but that the mother pushed him over the edge. As I said before, it was 5-10% his fault over the 50% mark, but both were in an emotional struggle.

  101. Zooey says:

    Shane,

I know for a fact that hacker bob is what he says he is.

    Just sayin’

  102. Mr. Evil says:

    C – Clumsy
    N – Nothing

CNN sucks almost as much as Tom DeLay. I watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Also some Scarborough Country and Hardball. At least they try.

It seems that CNN would hire O. J. Simpson if they thought he would increase ratings. Ratings should never come before reporting.

    Another hopeless romantic.

I was gonna say ” if CNN ever needs an expert on how to deregulate the pesticide business so your company can make more profit (so what if people die?)—then they can have Tom DeLay on as an expert. Other than that, what is he an expert on—how to go from legalized bribery to illegal bribery?”

For an excellent article on Iran & Iraq by Noam Chomsky go here:

It’s from The Guardian (London) because the US media won’t print anything that critical of US foreign policy!!

Walt, I appreciate your oppinion on this. The point is just what you said, he was over the line on this one. To his benifit, I read this morning that he did issue an apology.

Dlet and Zooey, here is another point that dlet and I started to explore earlier. What is you reaction anytime someone on the right speaks in such a way to say, Cindy Sheehan?

Shane, anytime you want to match SRBs, let me know.

  106. Lescoeurs says:

The terrible thing abiut CNN is they pretend to be a counter to FOX when they are, in fact, FOX’s ugly sister wannabe. It is irrelevant whether they add DeLay or not add Delay. CNN will continue to be the purveyors of disinformation and propaganda. Blitzer’s behavior after the Libby verdict is a great indication of what they are all about.

And again this post was supposed to be about DeLay and CNN. Plenty of other war areas here.
Maybe Hacker Bob needs to get his own blog.

  108. Zooey says:

    Shane,

When a thread is about something DeLay is not doing, it goes dead fairly quickly. It’s not the first time something like this has happened, and it won’t be the last. Not a big deal, really.

None of us is really all that far apart in our thinking, even hacker bob. As progressives/liberals, we celebrate our differences, but we also need to learn to get along.

Can’t we just get along? :-)

Tom “The Bugman” Delay must have been sniffing some of his old exterminator chemicals and imagined he was a commentator on CNN.

Better question is what’s your reaction to Cindy Sheehan.

And I don’t know what SRBs are.

Oh, and I am a wife of 22 years and a monther of a little girl and you told me to “Eat shit.” So I guess like Rep. Obey you lose your patience sometimes. Just saying, I thought Marines, like my brother inlaw were more disciplined.

Zooey – how exactly do you know that hacker bob is a Marine because that piece of info seemed to come out of nowhere.

And he posted her FIRST. So the area went dead before it started. And why was this the place to post about Rep. Obey. How is it related here. If we all basically agree, and I hope we do, then why be so easily distracted from the task at hand.
And how is spinning the behavior of Rep. Obey so negatively beneficial to Progressives. I’m a woman and a mother and I saw him being more patient than I would have been. And why wasn’t she asking questions of a Republican who is voting entirely for escalation. And who was taking the picture of her speaking to a Democrat. And with all the available scandals where would this meeting rank in importance?
    Just saying.

  113. Raymond Funamoto says:

DeLay MUST HAVE SEEN MY BLOG ABOUT SNAPPING HIS GEEK-NECK LIKE A ROTTEN TWIG AND GOTTEN SCARED TO JOIN CNN–OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE INUNDATED HIM WITH MISSIVES FROM MY E-MAILED HAM-FISTS!!!!!

  114. hacker bob says:

Better question is what’s your reaction to Cindy Sheehan.

Cindy Sheehan has the right to do and say everything she has said and done. I hold nothing against her for it. She paid a very heavy price and deserves to be listened to. She is not the moral authority and her loss is not greater than the loss other parents have had to deal with, but she does deserve respect and to have her voice heard.

And I don’t know what SRBs are.

Ok, I am a husband of 17 years and a father of 2 girls and a boy. I erroniously though you were a male. I know, no excuse. But remember who went on the attack with the name calling and such first. If you cone out of the box like that, you beg that kind of reaction. It was more of a “just shut up”. If you were offended, I apologize.

How was it benificial to Progressives to post or “spin” it that way? Let’s see:
    1) It shows that the people that you support are failable.
    2) It shows the level of respect he has for his constituants.

How does Zooey know for a fact I am what I say? Zoo and I have been communicating for a while now. She has seen the proof.

    Comment by hacker bob — March 10, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

No harm and no foul I can take just about anything to get the war ended before they draft my little girl.

But how do we know the lady was his constituent? I didn’t really hear her say that and they didn’t meet in his office but in the hallway.
If a constituent had a meeting with him do you think it would be in the hallway? And since there was a camera there how do you know she wasn’t a Republican plant from some other district determined to stay in his face until he lost his patience. If seemed like a pretty long confrontation to me and it seemed like it took him a long time until he even raised his voice loud enough for us to understand what he was saying.

And lastly, I haven’t posted here that long but there seems to be an ever growing amount of posts off topic and maybe more interpersonal than is expeditious to achieve any governmental reform.

    Thanks

    Hey Shane,

Robert (hacker bob) needs a woman like you in his TP life, and we appreciate the backup.

Sorry, sometimes we venture off topic, and I know sometimes we drive new people apeshit. Some of us have been posting here since 2005, and have gotten to know each other pretty well, and sometimes we drift.

We’ve been asking TP for open threads on the weekends, but do they listen? No.

Yep, I know hacker bob. We agree on approximately 10-12 things, and I think he’s coming along nicely. :)

Shane, I am actually pretty fair when it comes to the gender thing. But yes, I do have some of the “old fashion” left in me.

    Welcome to TP.

I saw part of that tape on eithr ABC or CBS this morning.

    1. I believe the congressman’s name was different.

    2. There was a man off to the right of the woman, cropped out of this version, that was shouting at the congressman some other comments..

    Where’d you get the link?

  121. hacker bob says:

A buddy of mine sent me the link to the YouTube video. I also saw it later in the evening on the local news.

Do you have a link to what you saw?
