Yesterday, ThinkProgress reported that Army Secretary Francis Harvey — who oversaw the squalor at Walter Reed and initially tried to blame the conditions on enlisted officers (”We had some NCOs who weren’t doing their job, period.“) — was given a lavish farewell ceremony. Here’s a photo from yesterday’s event:

March 10th, 2007 at 12:11 pmseeing something like this just reminds me how far we have fallen in terms of integrity and honor… they could at least have had the courtesy, in honor of the active duty and veteran military who have been so badly short-changed by their country, to do something low-key… this is a horrible embarrassment for our country…
speaking of embarrassments, any other president in history would probably have resigned by now, but is the fact that this one hasn’t a mark of principle and dogged determination, or an unwillingness or outright inability to see just how badly he’s screwed the pooch…?

March 10th, 2007 at 12:19 pmThe special uniforms belong to the Fife Drum and Bugle Corp, a ceremonial outfit based at Fort Myer, Virginia. They travel around the country performing for special ceremonial functions and such and they are quite good. That’s what they normally wear.

No wonder wounded soldiers were neglected and abused, since no profits to be made in medical care. Americans are going to have to demand that creeps like Harvey get prison terms and not elaborate send-off parties.

But profits were made. Much of the operation of Walter Reed was outsourced.

Gotta agree though, a send-off like this for a fired Army Secretary is a pretty clear indication of what this administration thinks about this situation:

Another example of fascism, George Bush style. By using ceremony and ritual to honor someone who is being forced to resign in order to appease political opponents, BushCo is sending a message to the troops (who’s daily life is filled with military ritual on an on going basis) that if you criticise this person, you’re going against your cadre.
