“Still recovering from Hurricane Katrina and a previous stint in Iraq, the Mississippi Guard is among a flock of ill-equipped units. But ready or not, some of the state’s guardsmen have been told to align personal affairs and begin girding for possibly another trip to Iraq. … ‘Every state, none of us has the equipment that we need, but we’re not crippled and some other states are,’ said Lt. Col. Tim Powell, a spokesman for the Mississippi Guard.”
The more they are allowed to get away with, the more corrupt they become.
I don’t know what else to do. I sign petitions, write my elected officials, email my friends… So few of us really seem to care.
March 11th, 2007 at 7:36 pm#1 I hear you. I gave more money, not a lot cuz I’m poor, and wrote more letters during the 06 campaign than ever before. When the Dems took the house I figured it would mean make a difference. So far all I’ve seen is more solicitations from other politicians.
March 11th, 2007 at 7:43 pmMy cousin’s boy just finished boot camp, came home last weekend and got married. He joined up because of the lack of jobs, so proof positive that we have in effect, an economic draft. He will ship out to Iraq in June, probably get wasted there too.

That’s disgusting…
Thomas Jefferson and his peers would be appalled by the current occupants of the White House and Congress. It’s become the very system they were revolting against.

So sorry to hear that… It’s heartbreaking to hear these kinds of real life stories…
March 11th, 2007 at 8:59 pm#1 and #2,
March 11th, 2007 at 9:00 pmI am with you guys – we are all doing what we can.
Then we hear something like this and it makes me want to scream.
Uncle Ho, I hope your cousin’s boy is OK.
I hope they’re all OK, but we know that it really is hopeless.
unb, Marie; thanks.
March 11th, 2007 at 9:02 pmI’m sure a large majority of the citizens of Mississippi voted for this adminstration. We, unfortunately, get what we vote for.
Maybe some of these awful consequences that are hitting the south very hard will give these U.S. citizens to pause when voting for another republican-but I doubt it.
Isn’t Mississippi like the most republican state next to Utah yet one of the least wealthy. You think they might vote for the democrats but gay marriage and abortion trumps all issues with these people.
They can go on complaining about the gay people getting married in Massachusetts which they don’t have to deal with ever in their life.
As a result, this state as well as the rest of the south will suffer.
I really don’t feel bad for them.
March 11th, 2007 at 9:04 pmUncle Ho,
Safe passage for your cousin’s son.
March 11th, 2007 at 9:10 pmWe read quite a bit that the south has suffered and sacrificed quite a bit in this war as a result of states like Mississippi having a large military presence.
You would hope that some of the citizens in states like Mississippi would see the light and reconsider their strong support for Bush.
Isn’t Mississippi on the most republican states? Isn’t it one of the poorest states also? Very similar to “What’s the matter with Kansas”.
The war is directly effecting, sadly, approximately 150,000 soldiers and their families and friends. The government has not asked the rest of us for any type of sacrifice. We were told to go shopping and the rich people will get their tax cuts. Again, Mississippi will not be a winner in the tax cut parade.
Mississippi overwhelming supported Bush because he was able to drive the social issues into their heads. Gay Marriage in a faraway state was more of a threat to them then the potential of their loved ones to be in a long, unwinnable war.
The people of Mississippi as well as the rest of the south will continue to suffer the consequences until they come to the realization that the republicans are not their friends.
They voted for this mess of an administration and they will suffer through it just like the rest of us-just as long as the gays in “liberal Massachusetts” and “evil San Francisco” don’t get married.
March 11th, 2007 at 9:12 pmBlessings Uncle Ho and to all of our service personell also…

I do believe their Repub governor, Haley Barbour, helped shape the Republican party as we know it today. Which includes the SOB’s on the 109th who gave Bush a rubber stamp on virtually everything. As bad as the situation is, and not meaning to sound callous, ol’ Haley will just have to deal with it.
March 11th, 2007 at 9:37 pm[...]a flock of ill-equipped units. But ready or not, some of the state’s guardsmen have been told to align personal affairs and begin girding for possibly another trip to Iraq.
ok … seems to me this would be the perfect group to stand up and call it off… just, “sir no sir – we cannot do that – we won’t do that”…
March 11th, 2007 at 10:05 pm“with all due respect, sir, this unit must decline” … i dunno…
but this is crazy…
With public education as it is in Mississippi (as bad as the rest of the USA) I can’t see these grunts KNOWING that that is an option…
March 12th, 2007 at 12:53 amSome of the deployments can be financed by cutting “lower priority federal programs,” according to a document issued March 9 by the Office of Management and Budget. a submission to Congress. Most affected by the cuts are the departments of Education, Agriculture, Transportation and Housing and Urban Development.

March 12th, 2007 at 7:56 amWith all the protests greeting Bush in South America, hate for him in the middle east, and disdain for W. in Europe, and very little support at home, Bush may well be the most despised person in the world today. I hate the motherf*cker myself.
March 12th, 2007 at 8:05 am19. Uncle Ho, the world will have to wait untill Laura and Barney turn on him before he will leave office.
March 12th, 2007 at 8:10 amWrite to Congress Senate.gov and VoteSmart for email addresses or Congress.org
Our young people volunteered to protect us, now we must protect them by continuing to scream at Congress until this madness stops.

If you guys are emailing, PLEASE throw Imus in there also. He NEVER gives up on shit, and that is what is needed for this kind of corruption and abuse.
Now go shoot them an email. The same one. It can even be this:
Dear Congressman,
I am disturbed to hear that troops from Fort Benning are being shipped out to Iraq even though they have been declared medically unfit. Please voice your concerns and help stop the deployment of these young men and women from your home state.

So the neocons increase poverty and then would like to repeal Roe v. Wade so that even more children are born to very young, poor women increasing the talent pool of recruits. I’m not that big a history buff but I bet this is a relatively new tactic by government elite.
March 12th, 2007 at 11:47 amOur thoughts will be with you and your family.
