Today on CNN’s Late Edition, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was asked about Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) call for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign. Graham said, “I think the fact that Senator Schumer asked for him to step down means he won’t,” claiming that Schumer’s statement “does interject a little politics here.”
Graham played down the administration’s purge of U.S. Attorneys, calling it perfectly within President Bush’s authority and merely “poorly handled” and “unseemly.” He also repeated Karl Rove’s lie that President Clinton also purged attorneys. “Clinton let them all go when he took over,” Graham said. Watch it:
As President Clinton’s former chief of staff (and Center for American Progress President and CEO) John Podesta told us on Friday, Rove’s claim is pure fiction:
Replacing most U.S. attorneys when a new administration comes in — as we did in 1993 and the Bush administration did in 2001 — is not unusual. But the Clinton administration never fired federal prosecutors as pure political retribution.
Transcript:
ROBERTS: Senator Graham, what you do think? Should he?
GRAHAM: I think the fact that Senator Schumer asked for him to step down means he won’t. You know, it does interject a little politics here. But the idea of how these U.S. attorneys were handled is, at best, clumsy.
You know, U.S. attorneys serve at the will of the president, and most of them involved have been there five and six years. But this idea they were fired for a cause seems to me to be unseemly, unnecessary and this whole matter was poorly handled. And that’s all I know to say about it.
I don’t believe the attorney general will resign, but this whole episode was unnecessarily poorly handled, because you can ask any U.S. attorney to leave. That’s the right of the president. Clinton let them all go when he took over, but you don’t need to start attacking people’s reputations unfairly and I think some of that’s been done.
"...But the Clinton administration never fired federal prosecutors as pure political retribution....."
Of course, President Clinton didn't - he thought they "needed more time to spend with their families" . The fact he didn't like the politics of anyone iin the job when he took office was merely coincidental.

March 11th, 2007 at 7:36 pmI think some of the progressive commentators are missing the point about the fired attorneys. The crime is not that the attorneys got fired, or that they were fired for political reasons, or that they were fired long after the president took office. The crime is that new appointments are not interim appointments subject to approval by Congress.

Attacking his reputation you say? No we just object to an imposter A.G. who does not believe that Habeas Corpus is is not guarranteed to Americans in the Constitution.

So, the message to U.S. Attorneys is, investigate a Republican and you're fired. Don't investigate a Democrat, you're fired.
The U.S. Attorneys become the investigative arm of the Republican Party for the next two years, leading up to the 2008 election. This can pretty much guarantee Democratic Candidates will be under intense scrutiny, while Republican Candidates will be insulated from any investigation.
And, with the secrecy involved with NSA wiretaps nothing will go unnoticed. If you thought Watergate was bad for the surveillance of the Democratic headquarters by Republican operatives, what are the implications of Homeland Security keeping tabs on every opposition candidate?
If Congress does not impeach this Administration, and soon, Congress itself will soon become irrelevant.
March 11th, 2007 at 7:50 pmClinton fired them in the beginning of his term. Not the ones he appointed, then fired later. Like Bush did. Congress had to approve Clinton's appointees, unlike when Bush did it.

March 11th, 2007 at 7:51 pmUsing the Neocon logic that it is alright to do anything if Clinton did it first they could be in a deep dollop of doo doo. First off, I suspect Monica would tell King George the Dumb to go pound sand, piss up a rope, and a few other metaphors that even the TP filters wouldn't pass. Secondly, if they were forced to follow Bill's example, without picking and choosing, the only recourse they would have would be to kiss their collective ass Goodbye and send their doubtful souls home to Momma because that collective ass belongs to the Democrats.

I had been crying and they could see my eyes were a mess. One of my sons said, †You know Mom, I know you’re sad because it’s our sister’s birthday…but maybe it’s better she died early - I mean what if she grew up and became a bank robber and was not allowed to go to heaven??†His sister just ahead of him, chimed in, “Or worse, Mom,…what if she grew up to be a DemoRAT???†I went on to tell them I was a recovering DemoRAT….Aren’t some kids just too precious????

Hmmm...good point, Graham. We don't want to interject politics here. Not when we're talking about an attorney general who decided he'd rather continue to represent the president, as he did in his old job, than represent his country, as is required by his current job--an attorney general who would fire U.S. attorneys for investigating and indicting Republicans or for not indicting a Democrat right before an election. Let's make darn sure there isn't a hint of politics when we're discussing the attorney general. That would be so unfair.
Lindsey Graham is clearly unhinged.

I agree with you completely.
I would suggest two things that could be accomplished by programming without people intervention: 1. Limit all comments to a finite number of words, say 400 (Comments in excess of the limit to be automatically referred to review and a posting decision made by management), and 2. Do not post more than two comments per thread from any individual without an intervening comment specifically referencing the comment (This would effectively eliminate the purpose of the trolls by limiting them to two comments per thread unless some fool responds. It would mean that we register the number of the comment to which we are responding but most of us do that as a matter of course).

Sorry .. that was Reno firing all 93 in ‘93.
How about if I rephrase #11 for you and see if it starts to sink in?
1) Clinton's firing of U.S. attorneys was in '93. You're absolutely right about that. And that was at the beginning of his term.
2) It's not unusual for a new president to replace all of the U.S attorneys shortly after taking office. Bush did it in 2001. And at that time they were subject to senate approval. No problem there.
3) A change was slipped into the Patriot Act reauthorization that took away the senate confirmation part of the process.
4) It's very rare for U.S. attorneys to be replaced mid-term.
Summary: Not like U.S. attorney replacements under Clinton at all. Totally different and totally crooked.
Is this helping at all or are you still cluelessly sticking by your dumbass Fox News/Limbaugh/Hannity talking points?

March 12th, 2007 at 12:43 amI think you all may be missing the real point of all this.
Attorney Generals are being fired if they don't follow Rove's new code of conduct, which says investigate the democrat as much as possible, and don't investigate the republican - if you want to keep your job. Those that do this, don't get fired. Compared to the number of attorney generals out there...the vast majority are playing along. Bush & Rove are treating this story very specially because this is their entire strategy for winning in future elections & resurrecting that fantasy of a republican majority.
The dems won big in 06 because they had Dean's 50 state strategy, which took all races into account, not just a select few.
What you are seeing now is Karl Rove's version of the 50 state strategy - only instead of funneling resources to local races, they investigate the democratic opposition in local races as election time approaches - thereby insulating the republican against the persona of corruption that has gripped the republican party, and placing it upon the democrat.
Its does everything they desire from an attack ad, but with the added edge of credibility & seriousness that is associated with attorney general investigations. At the same time, it solves their problem of the republican majority "dying from a thousand cuts" by reducing the number of corruption investigations targeting them. As these same republicans grow in power in D.C. they are incredibly dirty and owe big favors to Bush & his pals, this ensures new blood for the neocons & a way to grow their influence by grooming corrupt/compromised republicons for future positions.

If rachel is someone on the edge, why do people like barfly and unbelievable push?
rachel can actually be quite helpful when left to do what she does best. But some posters here will not let her go. They continue to attack her at every opportunity. They seem to enjoy driving her off the deep end on a regular basis.
What Unbelievable Human Garbage said was totally uncalled for. If she treats her students, their parents, her colleagues and/or her administrators that way, she'll be unemployed by the end of the school year.
There's no law against being a bully. But, those kids who shot up Columbine? They weren't the bullies. They were the victims of bullies and went off the deep end. Unbelievable Human Garbage must have missed that lesson in humanity.

March 12th, 2007 at 7:01 amTroll alert, barfly,
I did indeed post that comment to unbelievable after someone off-board let me know of her crude name-calling. No one hijacked my name. I post when I can, and do not limit my comments to when I "know" someone is still lurking or has "gone to sleep." (How often did MA say she was going?)
If Unbelievable reads it, fine. If not, fine. She always has to get the last word in anyways. And, yes, I can get ugly when the situation calls for it. We all know rachel does not deal well with being called names. Yet you both have, on occasion and recently, complimented her on some of her finds. If we're dealing with someone who is ill, we must do what we can to bring out the lucid moments, not what exascerbates the illness. A few of us have chosen the former path with rachel. Others, the later. For all we know, rachel may be suicidal. Remarks such as what unbelievable said could push such an one over the edge. What I posted was as much for rachel as for unbelievable. I doubt it will change unbelievable, but it did give her a dose of her own medicine.
And, I held back. I took Uranus' suggestion and drew a Rune. Peorth:mystery:reversed: "if you are holding onto a secret now is not the time to reveal it."
So, once again, the above posts were by me. rachel did not hijack my name. You can check with Zooey via the facebook account if you still do not believe me.

March 12th, 2007 at 12:11 pmSchumer was just on the view. Neocons HATE Rosie O'Donnell, mostly because she speaks the truth, and no doubt they will pull clips of that to post so maybe others will at least see part of the info.
March 12th, 2007 at 12:13 pmSo, once again, the above posts were by me.

O.K. Bris,I'm just surprised you stooped to that.
March 12th, 2007 at 12:17 pmI used to have respect for Lindsey Graham, but now he is nothing but a stooge for the corrupt administration. He is a disgrace.
March 12th, 2007 at 12:26 pmJust got the story from off-board.
I'm with Briseadh na Faire on this on.
March 12th, 2007 at 12:37 pmYet you both have, on occasion and recently, complimented her on some of her finds. BNF
Not me. I would never compliment her on anything, as she isn't a serious intellect. I see her plagiarism doesn't bother you. Well, it does bother me. So just stay silent if you cannot differentiate between right and wrong, BNF, OK? And you're an attorney? [shakes head]
March 12th, 2007 at 1:01 pmbarfly, regarding the plagerism issue. There is, thus far, an irresolvable conflict with TP's servers. I have had properly attributed and linked posts disappear due to their spam filter.
While it would be nice if she posted her cites, I honestly believe she has diminished capacity. The one time I found offensive, and this recently, was when she actually claimed credit for writing the original source. I attributed that to what I perceive as her disability.
Even the law takes disabilities into account.
March 12th, 2007 at 1:45 pmI’m with Briseadh na Faire on this one.
