Poll: Americans are worried about global warming.

A new Gallup poll finds that a majority of Americans are worried about the effects of global warming, including more powerful hurricanes (69 percent), more common flooding/droughts (67 percent), and rising ocean levels (63 percent). A recent Fox News poll found that 82 percent of Americans believe global warming exists.

So, I wonder if Fox will now say that 82% of us in the general public are being paranoid and alarmist? Or that we’re falling for the propaganda? I will bet money they’ll do that before the day is over, if they haven’t already.

  2. Your Conscience says:

Americans are worried period. Seven years of fear mongering and Rovian hate politics condition the sheeple to hand their fate over to a Chimp. Time for Americans to grow a spine.

also every 6 miles in a cheap reliable car produces 450g CO2

Dont fall for Nuclear power produces zero grammes of CO2 but it will have produced 0.012 grammes of high-level radioactive waste per kWh. That will take 24,000 years to become harmless

  31. Roger_Roger says:

It is more then time we do something about this problem. There is no bigger problem facing the global community. The EU has pledged to reduce their emmissions by 20% by 2020 and will go to 30% if other countries join them. There is no question we need to join them and actually push for a larger reduction in the neighborhood of 40% IMO. This will send a strong message that Global warming is a real issue and a very important one. Once we step up in a big way, it opens the door for us to demand that China, Russia, and India actually REDUCE their emissions instead of there 600%+ projected increase. These 3 countries alone are destroying our world. Greenhouse gas intensity studies show they produce only 0.5 GDP per emission while we produce 2.118 GDP per emission. To put it in an easy to see light:

    RUSSIA, China, India
    Global GDP Output: 7%
    Global Emissions: 25%

    USA
    Global GDP Output: 25%
    Global Emissions: 24%

If we finally step up and announce we are planning a massive reduction, it will open the door to demand these countries at least meet USA standards. If they did, it would reduce global emissions by over 18%. In perspective, the USA and the EU both reducing their emissions by 30% is only a 7.5% Global emission reduction. As you can see, we are in big time trouble. Not only are those 3 countries horrible polluters, they are planning HUGE increases. China alone is projected to increase their emissions by over 600% by 2025 which would yeild a net gain in Global emissions even if the EU and the USA reduced theirs by 30% each. Add Russias 60% projected increase and India’s 90% and you can see a bad situation coming.

Demand more from the President and Congress now. Bush is failing completely and congress continues to treat this problem with kiddie gloves. The nominal crap they propose is meaningless. We need a large change now and we need to DEMAND that China, Russia, and India join us. If they don’t, it is time to severely fine every export to make up the difference. We could at least use that money to somewhat offset these stinky polluting countries.

I saw both documentaries, and since this article was relevant, I posted to see what others thought of the BBC documentary? How is that being a troll? I’m curious to know what people thought of it? I’m not a scientist nor a politican.

But of course, you don’t want know nor do you apparently want to watch it. I guess having a mind fed with from only one perspective is all you can mentally handle.

  52. Roger_Roger says:

#41 Why would you assume I don’t believe in evolution? I believe in evolution 100%. I just find it disturbing to see a debate about Global warming that doesn’t focus on the largest problems and the largest possible reductions. What is it with this crowd and treating global warming as a poltical tool? Why would anyone want to except or leave China and India out of a Global warming discussion? You do realize that the USA its emissions by 50% and it wouldn’t matter without those countries following suit, right?

We are talking about the largest global problem man has ever faced and you want to use it for political power gains and ignore the largest looming threat.

  53. Flood guy says:

for others more open-minded that Shane…

we’re all for reducing foreign oil dependancy, reduction polution, diversifying energy production, energy efficiency and conservation; however, how can some of us be so convinced of a viewpoint after watching this documentary, and “expect” the rest of society to believe the same, while calling those who do not agree, as deniers, as heretics or simply as bushbots (like someone posted earlier?)

And if Shane can’t handle a post like this, show some class and ignore it.

  54. VerbalKint says:

Flood guy, the BBC documentary is B.S. It has no credible scientific backing. Clowns like Richard Lindzen have zero credibility.

  55. VerbalKint says:

Flood guy, let me spell it out for you: the consensus in the scientific community regarding the general outlines of global warming theory is absolutely overwhelming, and this consensus is close to what Al Gore presents in his film. It bears no resemblence whatsoever to the BBC documentary, a propaganda piece constructed around the ramblings of a handful of discredited blowhards and wackos.

There are a few people in medicine still who claim that AIDS isn’t caused by HIV, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Which view do you want to take your chances with?

  56. BCC says:

Here’s a link in which MIT professor Carl Wunsch, who was duped into participating in the ‘dcoumentary’, rips it a new one.

Dr. Wunsch is about a straight-shooter as you will find.

  57. Roger_Roger says:

I would be for the UN proposing a Global reduction mandate that would force every country in the world to a 30%-40% mandate. I would also be for a mandate saying that every country needs to achieve a 3.5 GDP per emission goal by 2020 as well. That type of greenhouse gas intensity mandate would force the use to reduce emissions by roughly 35% and would bring us to EU standards. Furthermore, it would force China to reduce emissions by well over 200% which would get them back in line with the Global community. These proposals seem fair and would certainly kill much of Global warming.

  58. Shane says:

Well I WAS and environmental biology major in college. And I understand how legitimate science functions. Do you remember when Bush’s guy who was debunking global warming for the administration was found to be a non-scientist political appointee.
    Didn’t think so.

  59. BCC says:

    Roger Roger,

I actually agree with you (!) re #30. But you haven’t addressed the fairness issue, which is that over time the US has generated a huge amount of emissions with which we’ve developed our economy, much more than what China and India have done historically.

So the question (that I don’t know the answer to) is how to distribute future emissions rights among the various parties. I would argue it’s hardly fair to cap India and China at a certain emissions/per capita that is much, much lower than what we enjoy today, or what we would enjoy even if we cut our emissions in half. Perhaps what we need to do is back into a single emissions per capita target (and I think at the end of the day it really must be per capita), and all agree to shoot toward that? Of course that will allow India and China to increase emissions from present (though emissions/GDP is high for them, emissions per capita is still low b/c they are still poor), but the idea would be to go forward in a sane manner.

  60. VerbalKint says:

Flood guy isn’t the first commenter here or elsewhere on the internet to promote this bogus “documentary”, and I find it interesting how he does so in a way similar to other commenters. Somehow I get the feeling that there is some astroturf marketing going on for this propaganda piece.

  65. Roger_Roger says:

#57 Emissions per capita is a bad idea since emissions are linked to output not population. Setting rate on a per captia basis destroys every country that produces the worlds needed goods and would be a very bad idea. That would actually discourage “clean” production. In fact, the EU would look very dirty by those standards when in fact they are some of the cleanest countries in the world. We need to reward countries for solid GDP to emission rates. The EU bounces around a 3 GDP per emission standard right now and is looking to hit 3.5 or better. If the USA, China, and the rest also were forced to go for a 3-3.5 GDP rate, Global warming wouldn’t even be an issue.

I do agree that America got a chance to build itself before this crisis was observed, but to simply allow these countries to massively increase their emissions because we “feel bad” is not the answer. Global warming is a problem, a HUGE PROBLEM, today. Allowing China to forecast a 600%+ emission increase is ridiculous beyond belief. That type of increase will produce more emissions then what the EU and hopefully the USA will plan to cut. This is why I would shoot for a UN mandate that links emissions to GDP. This would allow China to grow all they want, except they would have to do it in a clean way. This site is filled with answers on how to grow your economy cleanly, why can’t they? Why can’t we?

I am a firm believer that alternative energy can and will work. If it can work for us, it certainly can work for them. Why do we allow them to produce 1 new coal power plant every 3-4 days? Why can’t they produce solar, nuclear, and wind power instead? Nothing would stop China or the rest from continued growth. They would just have to do it in a clean earth friendly way like everyone else. We either work together as a global community or we die together IMO.

RR has raised his issue before and even with the same post as in #30. This ignores the fact that wages in China, India and Russia are significantly lower. That is the reason that you can find a desktop system in the $400 range, monitor included today and Bill Gates and Michael Dell each get $100 for their contribution. Another $80 goes to the developer of the CPU. This means that 30% of the GDP is in China’s pocket and the other 70% goes to the United States. I am ignoring the profits that go to Japan and Korea for the memory chips as I have no handle on that.

If you take the case of Halliburton, the disparity gets even worse. That company’s business model is sinful. To put a Halliburton employee on site, insures Halliburton a 100% markup on the cost of placing that individual there and then, a 15% profit rider. That means that Halliburton gets about 57% of the action and almost the entire cost factor is included in the United States GDP.

It also ignores the fact that these countries make up over 50% of the worlds population where the US only makes up 7%. This means that each United States citizen uses about eight times as much energy as citizens of those countries while mainly producing only services.

Because I already know in advance that it is propaganda, so why bother? I don’t read the National Enquirer for news, either. By the way, on calling me an extremist, nice job setting up a straw man and projecting in the same breath.

    WHY?

    #78 – michael,
So you will have the insight to buy property in Denver – soon to be beachfront.

  82. WaltTheMan says:

In my #76, the labels “(Energy use by three countries)” and “(Energy use by US)” need to be inverted. The math is correct, I just swapped the labels.

  83. muckdog says:

Well Roger, the only way we can impact our emissions is by reducing the burning of fossil fuels. That’s not going to happen as long as we keep building coal power plants. We have to build nuclear power plants. Like France has done to generate almost 90% of their energy. China, Japan, India, Australia and England are all building more nuclear power plants. We should be, too.

Otherwise, all this talk about reducing global warming is just talk.

    WHY?

    Comment by michael — March 12, 2007 @ 7:29 pm

If global warming does not exist, why was I still harvesting outdoor tomoatoes on CHRISTMAS DAY?

  85. VerbalKint says:

Nuclear alone won’t be nearly enough. We need a Marshall Plan/Manhattan Project scale endeavor to explore all practical alternative sources of energy that do not emit greenhouse gases, or do so in much lower quantities than fossil fuels. This includes wind, ocean, and solar-based energies. Anyone who proposes a single techology as the solution, be it nuclear, biofuel, or whatever doesn’t grasp the enormity of the problem.

    Comment by hacker bob — March 12, 2007 @ 7:46 pm”

So, just because you harvested some tomatoes on Christmas day you think this country should spend billions of dollars to do what?

  87. WaltTheMan says:

There are breeder reactor technologies that produce less waste than the uranium/graphite modulated water-cooled designs. The problem is that plutonium is a direct by-product of these designs. Since plutonium can be easily refined to bomb grade material – those particular cycles are frowned upon. On the plus side, plutonium is far easier to modulate than even fuel grade uranium. The difficulty in building a plutonium bomb is not setting off the reaction, but in containing it until it gets really nasty. Fat Boy (the plutonium bomb) was fat because the vessel containing the reaction was lots of high tensile steel surrounding a thin copper jacket.

No just like the levees in Louisiana. We think the government should not heed warning now so they can spend 50 times as much to repair the damage later. After all theres more money for cronies if you just wait.
