POLL: Americans Overwhelmingly Believe President Bush Should Not Pardon Libby

As Atrios first noted, a new CNN poll shows that Americans overwhelmingly believe that President Bush should not pardon Scooter Libby, who was convicted last week on felony charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

libbypoll.jpg

Should President Bush Pardon Libby?

Yes: 18 percent
No: 69 percent
Don’t Know: 13 percent

Was Vice President Cheney Part Of A Cover-Up?

Yes: 52 percent
No: 29 percent
Don’t Know: 19 percent

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer called the poll results more evidence of “a cloud hanging over Vice President Cheney and President Bush.”

UPDATE: Atrios also noted that NBC’s Andrea Mitchell said tonight on MSNBC:

They’re going to try to really tamp this down and appeal to the polling which indicates that most people think, in fact, that he should be pardoned. Scooter Libby should be pardoned.

  17. ForTruth says:

Americans are angry, and they are taking it out on Libby. They don’t know that he is just the fall guy for the bigger problems. The approvals went up because the uninformed public thinks the Libby verdict was a form of cleaning up the house. Its all a sham.

Do you think that Bush gives a rats ass about these polls? No he certainly does not care what a staggering majority of Americans think.

His indifference to the collective will of Americans is why he should pay the ultimate price, which is to live in infamy as an ex-president who was impeached.

It’s fun to think how far the Republicans have come in just the last three years. That’s a pretty high rate of political decay.

  24. CONservative says:

A lot of time seems to be spent of this subject, when we all know Bush is gonna pardon him right before he leaves office, unless something or someone removes this fascist cabal first. Really saddening but it’s gonna happen…

CNN’s Situation Room with Blitzer reported that Bush’s popularity rose (!?) 3% (based on what, I would ask those reponders) AND MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell said most people WANT Libby to be pardoned (every poll I have seen was just the opposite). What is going on?

  29. lestatdelc says:

NBC’s Andrea Miller (like most major media outlets these days) said something stupid, fact-free and tantamount to free spin for BushCo.

    Should President Bush Pardon Libby?

    Yes: 18 percent

39 percent said “be drawn and quartered”. 32 percent said “be gibbetted on the National Mall”. A vast majority of these said that Libby should be put to the same fate as well.

    Cheers,

  32. Angry One says:

As Wonkette and the Washington Post detail, the conviction of Scooter Libby is providing many opportunities for fun and profit:

    - “Guess Libby’s Pardon Date, Win a T-Shirt.”

And 17% said “should be stripped to the waist to see if he’s got a Puppet Master on his back.”

  35. WC says:

It’s the “Don’t Know’s” that bothers me. Guess these are the folks who obviously don’t bother to involve themselves in the functioning of our country. Like my mother-in-law, whose only interests since I’ve known her are gossiping with others and worshipping her house…spending hours on the phone each day to her “friends” (something she strongly denies) and contemplating what room she can rearrange next and what new item she can buy to decorate with. That, and her yardwork. I kid you not. Anytime she has the TV on it’s either the local news or HGTV. She’s the typical ignorant republican.

Anyway…This evening at the dinner table, we were watching the local news and they had a bit about Fred Thompson possibly running for President. General discussion ensued about others running for President in ‘08 (my wife, bless her heart, has been clueless for, well, ever, something I am trying to change), and the m-in-law blurts out “we never talked about politics in this house.” (This is a lie on her part, because in the 20 years I knew my father-in-law, he did discuss politics…not very often, but he did do it. Guess he never talked to her because she’d have no interest in it.) I’ve long ago come to the conclusion that she doesn’t like to talk politics with anyone because she is so damn clueless and uninterested and thus can’t join in the conversation.

Dude…I am trying. As mentioned, the wife does seem to be somewhat interested in politics…just not at the level she should be if she cares about what happens to her and this country. In fact, she lost a teacher’s assistant job several years ago thanks (or no thanks) to one of the ignorant requirements of NCLB. So I took that as an opportunity to really get her involved.

For those who reflexively buy into the notion that the media is somehow “liberal”, this is one of many, many, many examples that demonstrate what a load of crap that is. There are a lot of pundits just like Mitchell who pull these factoids right out of their asses. There is no other source that they can point to. And they do it daily.

The point of it is not how it affects Bush. I don’t think most people see it as having any bearing on whether or not he’ll pardon Libby. If he wants to, he will, especially if he knows it will piss a lot of people off.

The important thing about this poll is that it shows, once again, that the righties are out of touch. They thought they had a rallying cry: “Free Libby!” And then it turns out that most Americans want to see him do time.

Ah, those keen political instincts of the right. Not working so hot these days.

the balance both times and now we are stuck with this Iraq mess and a mess at home too.

  64. Jackie Rawlings says:

No need to debate what Bush should do about pardoning Libby. He said it all in his speech noted on truthdig.com

Mr. Bush told reporters that he decided to strip Mr. Libby of his nickname because “I hardly knew the man.”

Like Jack Abramoff Bush doesn’t remember supporters who get caught and convicted. Don’t look for Cheney to help he’s busy banking his stolen taxpayers money in off shore accounts. Yes the CEO of Halliburton played Americans for fools as he gave all the contracts to Halliburton, let them get Trillions of taxpayers money for doing nothing. Then go out of the country so Halliburton wont have to pay US taxes or get sued. Cheney is laughing all the way to the bank, and still dumb Americans believe his lies.
