Sen. Schumer Calls On Karl Rove To Testify

schumer_2.jpgIn a new statement, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to call on top White House aide Karl Rove to testify over the U.S. Attorney purge. The White House acknowledged yesterday that Rove “served as a conduit for complaints about federal prosecutors. From Schumer’s statement:

The more we learn, the more it seems that people at high levels in the White House have been involved in the U.S. Attorney purge,” Schumer said. … “There’s an emerging pattern that is extremely disturbing and everyday the sanctity of U.S. Attorneys as neutral enforcers of law without fear or favor is diminished,” Schumer said. “We will get to bottom of this.”

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman went through the record on Rove’s involvement in his column today:

Sources told Newsweek that the list of prosecutors to be fired was drawn up by Mr. Gonzales’s chief of staff, “with input from the White House.” And Allen Weh, the chairman of the New Mexico Republican Party, told McClatchy News that he twice sought Karl Rove’s help — the first time via a liaison, the second time in person — in getting David Iglesias, the state’s U.S. attorney, fired for failing to indict Democrats. “He’s gone,” he claims Mr. Rove said.

After that story hit the wires, Mr. Weh claimed that his conversation with Mr. Rove took place after the decision to fire Mr. Iglesias had already been taken. Even if that’s true, Mr. Rove should have told Mr. Weh that political interference in matters of justice is out of bounds; Mr. Weh’s account of what he said sounds instead like the swaggering of a two-bit thug.

Also yesterday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) declared their intention to question Rove “about any role he may have played in the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.”

Digg It!

Full statement:

IN LIGHT OF TWO NEW REVELATIONS, SCHUMER CALLS ON SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE TO CALL KARL ROVE TO TESTIFY

In light of new reports that Karl Rove played a role in the firing of U.S. Attorneys, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today asked the Judiciary Committee to call on Karl Rove to testify. Reports over the weekend reveal that New Mexico State Republican Chairman Allen Weh spoke with Rove about U.S. Attorney David Iglesias and that Rove spoke with both Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and White House Counsel Harriet Miers about Weh’s complaints.

“The more we learn, the more it seems that people at high levels in the White House have been involved in the U.S. Attorney purge,” Schumer said. “Recent disclosures reveal that Rove talked to the NM State Party Chair Allen Weh before any public announcement of the firing was made and that Rove talked about Mr. Igleisas to the Attorney General and the White House Counsel. While the White House states not incorrectly that someone in Karl Rove’s position might get complaints about U.S. Attorneys, it is almost unheard of for a U.S. Attorney to be fired shortly after such discussions occur, when that US Attorney had received highly favorable reviews and ratings.”

Schumer’s congressional inquiry has already exposed that in Arkansas, White House Counsel Harriet Miers iintervened on behalf of Tim Griffin, a former aide to Karl Rove, to persuade Attorney General Gonzales to install Griffin as the interim U.S. Attorney there.

“There’s an emerging pattern that is extremely disturbing and everyday the sanctity of U.S. Attorneys as neutral enforcers of law without fear or favor is diminished,” Schumer said. “We will get to bottom of this.”

  7. Ben Dover Says:

The unfortunate thing is all of these crooked bastards could care less if they are under oath because they know that Chimpy McFlightsuit is going to pardon them no matter what happens. Although the thought of Karl von Rove being someone's bitch in Leavenworth for even a month is extremely satisfying.

  13. eCAHNomics Says:

    From a commentor on tpmmuckraker:

It is next to impossible to get a Whitehouse aide before Congress based on separation of powers claims. This is precisely why so many functions that used to be handled by Cabinet officers has been moved to the Whitehouse, i.e., eliminate oversight.

Since Rove's duties are purely political I have always wondered by the taxpayers pay his and his staff's salaries and expenses. I can think of no other President that has had someone in a position similar to Karl Rove's. Why, for instance, can't the Chief of Staff take care of this.

For that matter, I can't remember Al Gore having a "Scooter Libby" on staff either.

It is this bloated Whitehouse staff that seems to be at the heart of so much that is wrong. Until we remove this opportunity for abuse the abuse will go unabated.

Why isn't this story making the mainstream press? I guess, we need more of Britney, Whitney, Jacko, The Runaway Bride, Anna Nicole Smith!

When the hell is this country going to wake up? -And- when is the media going to start reporting on the stuff that matters?

  24. powkat Says:

Pressure him, pressure Bush, every day - "Why would Mr. Rove be reluctant to help us clear this up?" Keep calling other Republicans, even those with minimal contact or input (like that Weh who couldn't wait to defend K-K-Karl) keep up the pressure, keep asking questions, even those that seem odd (remember, Alexander Butterfield thought someone had already mentioned Nixon's tapes, it was the best 'oops' moment ever seen on television.) Don't give them any breathing room - keep them so busy trying to hide all their crimes that they can't commit any more.

  25. ForTruth Says:

    Sharon it was totally intentional.

Eddie Murphy was a prisoner of war in one of his movies, and the captors were trying to get him to sign a document, like a confession of sorts. Eddie signed it. Mr. Meoff. And the captor asked for the first name and Eddie told him it was Jack.

In high school when we'd have a substitute teacher in class, in order to take roll, she'd usually pass around a sheet of paper and have everyone sign it. Someone would always add "Mike Hunt" to the list, and the sub would then call out everyone's name when the list got back to her.

And, bless her heart, we usually did it to a sweet blue-haired old lady who was still subbing.

    Yes, she would say...

"Is Mike Hunt here?" "Has anyone seen Mike Hunt?"

  67. LauraB Says:

When you get Karl in the hearings, ask him what he meant about this purge being just normal as he claimed in Arkansas this past week. Ask him why he lied about that to an audience of students. Ask him why he had security clearance and the capacity to read classified documents? Ask him why he doesn't have the decency to resign for having assisted in the outing of a CIA agent.

Why would any Congressman route any complaints about the US Attornies through the White House anyway unless they thought Congress did not already have the power to complain to the Justice Department on its own. Wouldn't "normal" channels have been Congressman to Justice Department? Who needed to have Karl to be a funnel of complaints anyway? Who indeed? And what were the complaints specifically? And against whom?

Gonzales said the other day that it was the USA's job to act on "policy" sent down from DOJ/Washington. Excuse me. What policy was he referring to? That wouldn't be political policy would it? I thought DOJ prosecuted on behalf of the laws, not the policies of Karl Rove.

Schumer said. “We will get to bottom of this.”

    I won’t hold my breath.

Let's put this in perspective, guys. If the Dems hadn't taken back the House and Senate, not only would we never see Rove called into a Judiciary Committee hearing, but there wouldn't even be any hearings on this matter. The very least that the Dems are doing with these hearings is to get the information out there to the public about what the administration is doing. The more they reveal, the more interest there is in the news media and the general public in continuing to chip away at the Bush White House.

We'll get to the bottom of all of it, eventually. The rats in the White House are running out of holes to hide in. In the meantime, enjoy the show.
