Conservative support for Gonzales ‘tepid.’

“Even among some Senate Judiciary Republicans, backing for Gonzales was tepid,” CQ reports:

“Appearances are troubling. This has not been handled well,” said John Cornyn, R-Texas. “But in Texas we believe in having a fair trial and then the hanging.”

Alabama Republican Jeff Sessions said he has had “a great relationship with the attorney general. But he’ll have to answer for this just like he does on other matters before us.”

Even more cryptic was Tom Coburn, R-Okla., when asked if he supports the attorney general. “I think we’ve got to have one.” This one? he was asked. “I didn’t answer that.”

WOW!! The Repugs are starting to eat their own! Must be some concern about the 08 elections looming, ya think?

  2. profmarcus Says:

i just can't feature gonzales voluntarily resigning... as one of the charter members of bush's true inner circle, his departure would be way too close to home for bush's comfort... bush could pull it off with rummy... it was just after the election, and, well, a change needed to be made, dontcha know... but gonzo has been one of the solid bricks in the wall around george, karl, and dick... if he goes, their vulnerability increases dramatically... the blood in the water will attract the piranhas from all quarters, not that that would seriously distress me, i might add...

And, yes, I DO take it personally

I think this administration's appointees have already had thier trial. When's the hanging, electrocution, death by lethal injection or whatever the sentence du jour is, these days? I'd love to attend. Consider this my RSVP.

This is pretty interesting reading [from http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/3/13/153640/487 ]

...If it was just a runaway Kyle Sampson acting on his own, then the matter would have dropped. The "target list" of U.S. Attorneys wouldn't have been forced out. The Patriot Act provisions would not have been used. And yet, they were forced out, and yet, the Patriot Act was used. By Gonzales himself.

This is one of those things so basic, so absolutely incapable of being spun away that it boggles the mind to be required to explain it. The issue here is not that some guy named Kyle Sampson wrote a note about how to force out politically uncooperative U.S. Attorneys by using a tucked-away political provision of the godforsaken "Patriot Act", the single most unpatriotic piece of legislation passed in the last sixty years. The issue is that the White House and the Attorney General of the United States then did it. They, you know, "acted upon that plan in a coordinated fashion" is I guess what the hip kids today would be calling it. It's res ipsa loquitur on a planetary scale.

They came up with a plan. Then they executed the plan. Then they lied about the plan. Alberto Gonzales' Chief of Staff may have suggested it. But Gonzales and Miers and other elements of the White House political apparatus then did it.

Alberto Gonzales is attempting to spin this such that he didn't use the Patriot Act provisions he himself used to replace the Attorneys he himself replaced, or that he somehow didn't realize he was doing it. That's ridiculous. It's inane...

This is one part of why ReichWingNuts Cheerleaders are backing away from Gitmo Abu Gonzo. This is one part of why Harriet Meyers walked away from her single source of power, Emperor George Willy Bush the Dumber.

    ITMFA!!!

Going out on a limb here, but all this talk about things ramming into Gonzo's butt crack....you think he wouldn't enjoy that?

Take a good look at that guy. He's probably maneuvering himself into a four year sentence as someone's bitch in the slammer.

The Faux Nooz meme is officially "Clinton fired all 93 US Attorneys when he came into office in 1993 and nobody cared about those political mass firings! HYPOCRITES!"

Of course, Clinton didn't do that in the middle of his term after having his party sneak a provision into the Patriot Act saying they could replace USAs without Senate approval, then had Janet Reno lie under oath about it, either.

You know Gonzo should be worried about his survival when John Cornyn, who's essentially Bush's little wind-up toy in the Senate, is lukewarm at best about him. And Coburn sounded rather ominous there.

  31. skeptic Says:

Wasn't Gonzales the person who thought torture could be legally justified? I think we should use him as a teaching dummy in a hands on course of "Torture 101, as approved by the White House".

Acknowledging mistakes is nto enough. These guys hold positions too high to have so-called mistakes like this. These are deliberate acitons no matter what excuse he gives. And if he claims ignorance, he still doesn't belong in place.
    He must go.
Sampson's resignation is insufficient - Gonzales works for us.
At the pleasure of the president is a meaningless phrase in this case because we'd like to fire the president too.
Fire the whole g.d. bunch of them.
As an American citizen and his employer - I demand he leave office.

    No 3%

I join you in that demand, Marie.

As Attorney General, Abu Gonzales has only ever had one client -- George W. Bush. He has never represented the interests of any other American.

  40. JaneESchneider Says:

Marie, #37, I'm with you 100%. None of Bush's hand-picked buddies would last more than a couple of weeks at a real job due to their lack of competence and integrity. I'm sick of paying their salaries. Hell, I'm sick of looking at them and hearing their voices--so condescending and full of themselves.

MA, or VV or whatever the newest incarnation is just a shit stirrer. Drops a load when the boss isn't watching then Toodles....

I am afraid the 30% is a pretty solid backstop for Bushco, but we have made some headway with the middle 40% over the last year or two.

(Slapping my forehead) Of course! I had a brain cramp for a minute there. Even saying integrity and republican in the same sentence is an oxymoron.

I have made more than one error tonight - I have been at the keyboard too long, watching too much tv this afternoon, and way too occupied with my real life. I think I should say g'nite.

  58. midwestblue Says:

From "The President's Counselor" by Bill Minutaglio (Harper Collins 2006):
[...]Bush and Karl Rove, in turn, orchestrated Gonzales’s rise, making him state secretary, then a Texas State Supreme Court justice, even though he had no judicial experience. This taught Bush, Minutaglio says, that he could appoint anyone he pleased to the bench. The appointment also appealed to his anti-intellectual streak.
