Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has joined former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) in calling for Alberto Gonzales to step down.
UPDATE: Dan Froomkin weighs in:
No one would deny that one of the duties of the president of the United States is to place people of his choosing in key positions throughout the executive branch, including in key law-enforcement positions. [...]
But in law-enforcement jobs — such as the attorney general, the director of the FBI, and the country’s 93 U.S. attorneys — overtly partisan behavior is a more troubling problem. While the men and women in those positions serve at the pleasure of the president, it is also a critically important part of their job to remain independent.
That’s because it’s flatly un-American for the law to be used as a political weapon. It erodes public confidence in the justice system, and offends the American commitment to fairness. It’s the sort of thing that, quite properly, can lead to impeachment.
Keep up the pressure, ya’ll. :-D

March 13th, 2007 at 10:34 pmI suspect the founding fathers expected a certain amount of vigilance from the citizens of this country to keep the Constitution functioning properly. Obviously not only the politicians but the people of this country have been negligent in their duties. I think this administration has shown us how tenuous democracy can be.

March 13th, 2007 at 11:02 pmHey, Zooey:
There was talk of “purpose” on TP.
I wrote one item on facebook, but please indulge this other item. …..
It’s called “Sunlight on Icicles”
The sun is diffracted brilliantly through an icicle hanging down across our living room window.
The icicle lets the sun through, bending the rays just enough to make it glitter, and in doing so avoids its own destruction. Not to glitter- to absorb the light and melt- would be to die.
A poet or metaphorical prose-writer could make a lot of this. We are alive only to the extent that we affect others. We are dead as soon as we live for ourselves.
“The only immortality” said Ernst Mach, “is the changes we work in the world.”
To live for ourself is to miss both immortality and a brief span of life here and now.
–B.F. Skinner “Notebooks”

The New York Times
Late Edition – Final
WASHINGTON, March 23 — Attorney General Janet Reno today demanded the prompt resignation of all United States Attorneys, leading the Federal prosecutor in the District of Columbia to suggest that the order could be tied to his long-running investigation of Representative Dan Rostenkowski, a crucial ally of President Clinton.
Jay B. Stephens, the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, who is a Bush Administration holdover, said he had advised the Justice Department that he was within 30 days of making a “critical decision” in the Rostenkowski case when Ms. Reno directed him and other United States Attorneys to submit their resignations, effective in a matter of days.
While prosecutors are routinely replaced after a change in Administration, Ms. Reno’s order accelerated what had been expected to be a leisurely changeover. Says He Won’t Resist
At a news conference today only hours after one by Ms. Reno, Mr. Stephens said he would not resist the Attorney General’s move to force him from office, and he held back from directly accusing her of interfering with the Rostenkowski inquiry.
But Mr. Stephens left the strong impression that Ms. Reno’s actions might disrupt the investigation as he moved toward a decision on whether to seek charges against the Illinois Democrat, who is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
“This case has been conducted with integrity,” Mr. Stephens said, “and I trust the decisions in this case will not be made based on political considerations.”
Nonetheless, lawyers who have followed the investigation have said that Mr. Stephens has been concerned that the Democratic Administration might try to upset his investigation.

Kansas Abortion Prosecutor Fired
Posted on 01/09/2007 10:33:23 PM PST by Aussie Dasher
The newly elected Kansas attorney general fired a special prosecutor Tuesday whom his predecessor had appointed to prosecute the state’s most visible abortion provider.
Don McKinney had been hired to investigate Dr. George Tiller, one of the few doctors in the nation to perform late-term abortions. McKinney has previously protested outside Tiller’s clinic. His last day will be Saturday.
“You are further ordered to cease and desist any further activity in this matter,” Attorney General Paul Morrison wrote in a letter to McKinney.
McKinney said he had been fired to “protect the abortion clinics.”

March 14th, 2007 at 12:05 pmWhy is it so wrong for a republican A.G to fire U.S.A’s. Did not janet reno a democrat working for clinton fire 93 USA”s in 93. One was handling whitewater the other a powerful democrat? Did not hillary fire everyone in travelgate. How about the document gate. Hillary’s staff had confidental information on many republicans which was against the law. No liberals, No liberal newspapers, I.E ny times, boston globe ,la times and so on said nothing. Hillary should quit. She stonewalls, stonewalls and stonewalls more and no democrat or spineless repulican says a word. Gonzales has to stand up and tell these liberals that” the way they conduct buisness. So what’s the problem.
March 19th, 2007 at 10:48 amGonzalez can go. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.
March 19th, 2007 at 1:00 pmHaving said that, I must remind u {liberals} that JFK named his own little brother {RFK}, a man who never prosecuted a single case in court and press & citizenry never said a thing about it.
