Gonzales: Sampson still on payroll.

By Nico Pitney on Mar 13th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

Gonzales: Sampson still on payroll.

At his press conference today, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales acknowledged that his former chief of staff Kyle Sampson, who resigned over the scandal yesterday, remains on the Justice Department payroll. “His transition — as a technical matter, he is at the Department as he transitions out and looks for another employment.”

gonz.jpg

More Gonzales: “I acknowledge that mistakes were made here. I accept that responsibility, and my pledge to the American people is to find out what went wrong here, to assess accountability, and to make improvements so that the mistakes that occurred in this instance do not occur again in the future.”

UPDATE: CREW calls for a special prosecutor to investigate potential criminal violations.

UPDATE II: Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) responded to Gonzales: “Did the attorney general not know that 8 U.S. attorneys were to be fired? He didn’t know, he shouldn’t be attorney general, plain and simple. That is not a minor personnel decision. That is a major act that has shaken the integrity of the U.S. attorney offices — not only those in question — but all of them, to the core.” Watch it:

Did anyone check to see if he had his fingers crossed behind his back when he said this? Sounds like the same non-apology ‘apology’ Bush made when announcing he was giving the finger to the ISG and the majority of the American public in announcing his escalation. So we know there is no real acceptance of responsibility.

In BushWorld, it seems the more worse things that you have done, are equally rewarded with a position in kind.

So when are the Democrats going to DO something about all of this?

You’ve got a pretty clear case of the administration, and the Republicans in collusion, using the Department of Justice to pursue a political agenda against the Democrats (can anyone say NIXON!).

How many Republican “dirty tricks” are the Democrats going to put up with before they DO something?

The folks behind this belong in jail! They are subverting the entire American system of government.

  40. OxyCon says:

This was a premeditated crime. Time to subpeona Arlen Spectre to find out who told him to slip those last minute provisions into the Patriot (sic) Act. The Bushies discussed ways in which they could fire US Attorneys and then appoint new ones without Congressional oversight. THEN AFTER these discussions, Arlen Spectre was asked to alter the Patriot Act.
    This was a premeditated crime.
Gonzalez knows it too. So does Bush, who gave the OK for it and So does Rove who was the go between.

Your ‘truth’ is disingenous, and conveniently misses the point we’ve been pointing out to your fellow-in-talkingpoints Roger2, Bush fired all when he came into office (which is what Clinton did) and put these very people in place then. I guess that depends on how many more lifes are lost because of Bush! Can you possibly tell me how many lives Clinton lost in an ILLEGAL WAR?????

Yes it was Illegal because by the UN charter, Bush was REQUIRED to get UN approval. Since he BUGGED the UN and knew that Russia and China would not vote for the war, Bush invaded WITHOUT the UN authority.

Care to provide the number of lives lost under Clinton???? If it is more than 3,000 American lives and 650,000 citizen lives of another country then you may continue to spout off using Clinton as an example.

  62. Scooter says:

What I really get a kick out of is Harriet Miers’ original suggestion that they get rid of all 93 USAs!! This is the same personal attorney to the President that was in charge of selecting the next supreme court nominee (following Cheney’s example back in 1999) selected HERSELF. The same Harriet Miers Bush tried to appoint to the Supreme Court to cover his sorry ass in case some day there were investigations of Bush/Cheny but that that was so incompetent that even the Repub congress couldn’t bring themselves to approve the appointment!
One can only imagine what would have happened if the prez had been successful in appointing the most crazed Bush sycophant since Kathryn Harris.

Hopefully Gonzales will be the next one out the door after Sampson but now we hear that Sampson is still on the payroll (maybe he’s sharing an office with the “semi” retired Rumsfeld, who still has a desk).

A HUGE difference between previous Presidents (excluding Nixon) and what Bush and Gonzales are doing!

It has become extremely apparent that Bush, Gonzales, and the Republican Congress, are firing the various attorneys simply because they have refused to go after the Democrats aggressively enough.

Now can ANYONE show me where another President (other than Nixon) did the same thing?

  65. paland says:

The Bush administration had this planned. That’s why it was snuck into the Patriot Act II. They thought they would win in November and then walk these judges thru. And the Dictatorship would be complete. The problem is, they didn’t expect to lose both houses of Congress. OOPS. But they tried anyway. This is BIG! The Bush Administration got caught with their pants down.

Now you will see the true beginning of impeachment procedings . I think Pelosi has seen enough.

  66. Com-n-sense says:

“Gonzo” gonzales was just on TV and said that “yes, he made some mistakes” and that “he believes in accountability”, after which he said that “no, he will not resign” and he “stands by his decision that the firings were justified”.

So there you have it. Mistakes were made, but apparently just admitting that means that the accountability part really doesn’t apply and the fact that the firings were justified means that the only mistakes made were that this all became public.

  67. gummitch says:

Nothing like the passive voice. “Mistakes were made.” By themselves?

That’s a little kid construction: “The lamp got broken.”

Something about this administration and ownership that just doesn’t quite line up.

  68. Roger Hall says:

Take ‘em to the mat Chuck. We are all behind you (well, except the deluded little Bush zealots)

Gonzales will try and hold on, but more and more revelations are in store – and he knows it. He looked nervous and like a man who had been caught for doing something he should be.

I hope the dems are looking for legal ways to force him out.

YES! Our CONSTITUTION states that any treaty or anything else of legal stature becomes part of our laws.

Article VI. – Debts, Supremacy, Oaths

All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

We’re the country that began the UN, and decided that through treaty it was inappropriate to wage war without UN approval. Funny how George the elder used the UN rules as an excuse to defend Kuwait from Iraq. Now you’re the same fcuking idiots that pooh-pooh the UN treaty obligations of the US when it doesn’t suit your needs.

That’s because you have the intellect, reasoning and awareness of a child. What do you expect, for people to treat your st*pid comments as adult debate?

An adult would be able to recognize an inconsistency in the US using the UN rules when it suits us, and ignoring them when it doesn’t. An adult might debate the relevance of an international body of peace – but then again an adult would recognize its usefulness and significance.

But then again, you’re not an adult – in any measure. You childish prick.

“but it does NOT say that we have to hand over our sovereignty to the United Nations”

Oh Yeah…… Who says that getting authorization to attack another country that has NOT attacked us is giving up our sovereignty???? Since when did that fall into being a role in sovereignty?

As much as you would like to twist it…… The FACTS are that this was is ILLEGAL!

Also your example is rediculous. We chose what we want to be part of. We make that decision and then we have to live by it. We chose to be part of the UN Charter, which means that we are LEGALLY bound to follow the rules. If we don’t want to, then we need to withdraw from the charter.

Until that day comes, we are bound by that as being part of our laws.

Damn, a 5th grader could figer that out.

  87. Dale says:

#86, you still haven’t answered my question… if we’re “LEGALLY bound to follow the rules” as you say, then why did Congress bother debating the Kyoto Protocol?

Or why did Congress vote on whether or not to invade Iraq? If what you say is true, then if the U.N. says we’re allowed, then we could, but if they say no, then we can’t.

For that matter, why do we give the U.N. any money? If we’re bound by them, them they pretty much *own* our money anway.

Sorry, but the U.S. is NOT by law bound to U.N. regulations.

  88. Dogjudge says:

    #87

    Dale,

What does any of this have to do with Gonzales and the AG situation?

  89. chris says:

because #87, since you’re so slow – we debate Kyoto and other treaties to determine if we want to join them – read your constitution like others on here have told you a hundred times already. don’t post again until you do. please; it will save you some embarrassment

  90. Dale says:

#88, it was originally brought up by RemoveBush in #59. Ask him.

  91. Dale says:

#89, so you agree that the U.S. is bound by law to U.N. resolutions? REALLY?

  92. RemoveBush says:

    “#87

#86, you still haven’t answered my question… if we’re “LEGALLY bound to follow the rules” as you say, then why did Congress bother debating the Kyoto Protocol?”

Because we were not a SIGNATORY of the protocal yet. They were debating whether or not we should. Maybe you should brush up on how things like this works under our system?

“Or why did Congress vote on whether or not to invade Iraq? If what you say is true, then if the U.N. says we’re allowed, then we could, but if they say no, then we can’t.”

Because they also stipulated that Bush must follow the UN Charter. They required him to go back to the UN for the second authorization!!!!! First, Bush had to get authorization from Congress……. In case you are not aware of how our Constitution works……. Congress MUST authorize the president to perfrom hostile actions.

“For that matter, why do we give the U.N. any money? If we’re bound by them, them they pretty much *own* our money anway.

Sorry, but the U.S. is NOT by law bound to U.N. regulations.

    Comment by Dale — March 13, 2007 @ 4:56 pm”

That is the MOST ASSISNINE statement I have read!!!! That’s like saying that I don’t need to file a tax return because the government has a “so called” law that says I have to file so they should be able to just take what they want and how they want because of this. WRONG!!!!

In simpler terms….. It’s like saying that a cop can shoot someone anytime they want because they have a gun and they are the law.

  93. dlet says:

Oh god. Dale is here debating treaties and the Consitution. Have fun people.

    WRONG!!!!!

    Me #59
“I guess that depends on how many more lifes are lost because of Bush! Can you possibly tell me how many lives Clinton lost in an ILLEGAL WAR?????”

    You #72
“So we need UN approval? Can you please show me where in either the U.S. Constitution or the U.N. charter that specifies that we need UN approval for ANYTHING? Is *that* really what you’re basing your “illegal war” mantra on?

    Comment by Dale — March 13, 2007 @ 4:02 pm”

No wonder you are so wrong on everything!!!! You can’t even get what you said straight.

Dale can’t figure out whether to use his right or left had to pee.

Talking treaties with him is like arm wrestling an infant.

    RemoveBush,
you make excellent points – none of which will be absorbed into that pea brain.
You are better than stooping to his level.

    Just saying.
    :)

  99. regulararmyfool says:

In regard to Dale, in Bushlover 101, he was told how to do this.
    1. Always sidetrack the discussion from the point of the discussion.
    2. Never agree to anything.
    3. Bush never did anything. It was all part of Clinton’s administration.
    4. BE STUPID, that way you can sucker them into coming to your level of discussion.
    5. At the stupid level, you have so much practice you will always win.

  100. ValiantVenusGrewFromUranus says:

#76, good, our Constitution says we have to respect treaties that we enter into; but it does NOT say that we have to hand over our sovereignty to the United Nations. Comment by Dale — March 13, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

That’s the same thing, you st*pid idiot. What do you think the WTO is – a favorite of the fair market zealots? It hands over sovereignty to the WTO courts, through treaties.

If what you’re implying was the case, then we would never have to ratify ANYTHING (like the Kyoto protocols), because the UN said so and that’s that. Comment by Dale — March 13, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

That’s a strawman. If we ratified the Kyoto, then by the ‘treaty’, we hand over that sovereignty to the UN at some level.

    My point remains… Comment by Dale — March 13, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

You never made a point – you made an ignorant and uneducated strawman.

    we don’t need the UN’s approval to wage war… Comment by Dale — March 13, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

Actually we do, if it’s anything other than clear self defense after being attacked.

so if that’s the only justification that the Iraq war is illegal, then you’re mistaken. Comment by Dale — March 13, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

If this is your argument, then you’re mistaken.

There are several basis for this war being illegal.

Aggression is illegal by our own treaties with the UN – an organization we founded.

Aggression based on lies to congress are also illegal, as only Congress has the right to grant a war.

Aggression based on the AUMF is also illegal, as it required Bush negotiate and come to a peaceful resolution if possible. It was possible, therefore the war was illegal.

There are several basis for the illegality of this war. There’s no basis to conclude you have a lick of sense though – dum bass.

Just as much as Iraq – the other signatory to the UN resolution was. It was a treaty signed by both parties – you st*pid c*nt.

  103. RUCerious says:

    from wiki…good material.

Others did accept a limited right for military intervention in foreign countries, but nevertheless opposed the invasion on the basis that it was conducted without United Nations approval and was hence a violation of international law [2].

According to this position, adherence by the U.S. and the other great powers to the UN Charter and to other international treaties to which they are legally bound is not a choice but a legal obligation; exercising military power in violation of the UN Charter undermines the rule of law and is illegal vigilantism on an international scale.

Benjamin B. Ferencz, who served as the U.S.’s Chief Prosecutor of Nazi war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials following World War II, has denounced the Iraq War as an aggressive war (named at Nuremberg as “the supreme international crime”) and stated his belief that George W. Bush, as the war’s initiator, should be tried for war crimes.[3]

  114. Marie says:

These losers are caught redhanded and they are forced to admit, I accept responsibility — that is not enough. They think that absolves them from repercussions for their acts. They are sadly mistaken.

They are a scourge on democracy.
    They should be exiled.

  115. JaneESchneider says:

Gonzales: “I acknowledge that mistakes were made here. I accept that responsibility,

I think that Gonzo cut-and-pasted that out of Bush’s ’surge’ speech. I just wish that Bush and the rest of his administration had any clue what ‘accepting responsibility’ actually means. Note that neither said that they are accepting the consequences of their actions.

  117. angryvietnamvet says:

ANd why should we continue to pay the salary of Mr. K. Saxton who resigned from his job? What is he “transitioning to” in the private sector. Most people in the civilian sector who quit or are fired are not kept on the payroll while they look for another job. Under some circumstances they may qualify for Unemployment Compensation, which is usually a small part of their previous wage. Sounds like welfare for the rich and well connected to me. Bush welfare plan. Bastards should all be fired and then sent to Guantanamo for waterboarding rehab. (Especially this Saxton bastard who is a mormon right wing fundamentalist fascist extremist who reject the concept of church-state separation. )

  118. angryvietnamvet says:

Correction: the guys name is not Saxton but Sampson. A fascist by any other name is still a traitor.

  119. Raymond Funamoto says:

AGAIN WITH THE “I accept responsibility” CRAP, Gonzales? IF YOU REALLY ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY, YOU WOULD RESIGN YOUR OFFICE, BUT SINCE YOU ARE A MEMBER OF Bushland Uber Allies, YOU FEEL THAT JUST BY ADMITTING YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, YOU ARE ALSO ABSOLVED OF ALL BLAME AND THEREFORE DO NOT HAVE TO RESIGN TO SHOW YOUR SINCERITY–WHAT UNMITIGATED ROT AND CLAP-TRAP!!!!! KIND OF LIKE THE KID WHO KILLS BOTH HIS PARENTS AND THEN PLEADS FOR MERCY ON THE GROUNDS THAT HE’S AN ORPHAN–WAIT A MINUTE, WASN’T THAT Lyle and Erik Menendez? ARE YOU RELATED TO THESE MURDEROUS QUEER URCHINS, Gonzales?

  120. Think Progress » Gonzales Gave Kyle Sampson New Justice Dept. Office After His Supposed ‘Resignation’ says:

[...] Media outlets have reported this week that Sampson, Gonzales’ ex-chief of staff, resigned over the U.S. Attorney scandal on Monday. But as ThinkProgress noted, Gonzales on Tuesday made vague remarks during his press conference indicating that Sampson was still on the department payroll. “His transition — as a technical matter, he is at the Department as he transitions out and looks for another employment.” [...]
