Army Surgeon General Kevin Kiley, who described the Washington Post’s investigation of Walter Reed as “yellow journalism at its worst,” was replaced yesterday by his deputy Maj. Gen. Gale S. Pollock. As the Post reports today, Pollack seems to be cut from the same cloth:
Pollock, in an e-mail sent to colleagues and staff in the Army Medical Command on Friday, had also sought to minimize reports about conditions at Walter Reed and attacked the media’s handling of the issue.
“I know everyone is extremely pained and angry about the media assaults on Walter Reed and our senior leaders,” Pollock wrote in an e-mail obtained by The Washington Post. She added that she “articulated our displeasure at the misinformation about the quality of care” to a Post reporter after a congressional hearing last week but also acknowledged that she believes the stories could create momentum for changes that would better serve the Army.
She also wrote: “I know that your families and loved ones are affected by this event as well — please reassure them that the media makes money on negative stories not by articulating the positive in life — though that is something I will never understand.”
A spokeswoman for Pollock told the Post that her message was merely “intended to lift the spirits and reinforce confidence in her colleagues and her staff.” In any case, she won’t be serving long. An advisory board will soon recommend a new surgeon general, who must be approved by President Bush and confirmed by the Senate.

OK, swiftboat her in 5…4…3..2..
March 13th, 2007 at 10:21 amMeet the new boss.
Same as the old boss.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:22 amsame day, same sh*t
March 13th, 2007 at 10:24 amYes, dearie, and the Halliburton subsidiary to whom the health care was outsourced makes a lot of money by cutting back on hygiene, doctors, drugs and nurses.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:28 amNot to mention pest control…
hacker bob sez:
bob, I think she ’swiftboated’ herself quite effectively when she waxed poetic about the pain everyone was experiencing as a result of the media coverage of the train wreck that is our veterans’ health care systems, rather than the pain experienced by the victims of said train wreck.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:31 am“Media assaults” = news to the rest of us
Talk about your Orwellian use of the English language.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:32 ammaybe we don’t have anyone that is human remaining in the military. the beings that are still there don’t recognize talent. they seem to put everyone in their bag as human garbage. “they must be like me” what a pile of shit they try to hide by blaming the troops for the trouble
March 13th, 2007 at 10:32 am#5, TMM,
March 13th, 2007 at 10:35 amYup, she’s more interested in covering her rank’s f*ups than committing all her resources to providing the best possible care for her wounded.
#6, Yeah! When the “Media Assaults” start arriving in LSTs and the reporters are wading ashore amid withering machine gun fire, I’ll start giving some credence to her.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:36 amOne day should these fine people live long enough, they too will require health services. NOT care… care is long gone when a human being is sick.Hopefully they will maintain enough benefits to be REQUIRED to use the military health system when they get ill. They will then taste their own koolaid… freely passed out by many adminstrations. VA problems did not happen overnight or over six years. In the 80’s the VA was in foul shape… veterans sitting and waiting over six hours to get a bottle of pills. I took care of a home care patient as an RN and found a bottle of dilaudid 4mg and there were 300 dispensed. How in the world can anyone justify this? You and I cannot even fill a presciption for that much pain med at one time. The entire military system for health services is broken, has been and should have been fixed before we went to war with the ” army we had”…. we coulda used all these millions/billions/trillions to help their health system as well as our own civilian health system.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:38 amThe civilian system is no better since groups are now writing misleading ” standards of care”… Check out the Infectious Disease Society of America and how they ration and limit care for Lyme Disease.
DISGUSTING and EVIL
or just greed… you decide
Just change the face — same strips: (but just keep the corruption going.)
Your’re doin’ a heck of job Chimpie!
as an aside :
is there a list of Rethuglicans that have jumped ship from the S.S. BushCo. since he stole the election in ‘00?
March 13th, 2007 at 10:41 am“I know everyone is extremely pained and angry about the media assaults on Walter Reed and our senior leaders,â€
Oh really? And who’s “everyone”, you sorry excuse? I guess Bush really has purged the military of commanders who give a shit, because this pitiful human being has rendered herself a worthless piece of four dimensional space by opening her mouth and emitting that stupid, stupid comment.
Go to hell, and take the rest of the excuse-making panderers and the administration with you. Before they bring further hell to this world.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:43 amSo, again it is a ‘media problem’…. NOT a soldier caring problem. Media should have stayed silent according to G. Pollock !!

How about if we give her say, at least a week in the job. THere may be a method to her madness.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:54 amI know it’s quite common for men to try to subtly dominate women, even women in high positions of authority, by referring to them as “honey” “sweetie” “toots” and the like.
I believe we should all be treated as equals. I am above such petty tactics. So I will simply refer to Gale Pollock as “Stupid.”
” ‘I know everyone is extremely pained and angry about the media assaults on Walter Reed and our senior leaders,’ Pollock wrote in an e-mail obtained by The Washington Post.”
No, STUPID, everyone is pained and angry that such stories HAD to be written, because Walter Rees was run like a Turkish prison for people who served YOUR STUPID ASS and this STUPID-ASS Administration as honorably as they possibly could in the face of a dishonorable illegal war. The sooner you get that through your THICK STUPID HEAD, the sooner we might come to a solution that allows this nation to retain some shred of dignity from which we can rebuild all the good will we once had with our soldiers as well as our allies.
By the way, you’re stupid. And I’m not a chauvinist.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:56 amBlame the media… how stupid.
The media makes money on EVERY story! Not just the negative ones!
CLEAN UP THE FREAKING HOSPITAL AND STOP WHINING!! Do your freaking job and shut the hell up.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:00 amIt’s the media’s job to check governments. This is why it is especially insulting that Neocons have FOX.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:03 amShe is just another enemy of Democracy and the free press.
hacker bob sez:
Sorry, bob…not buying it. All through this administration, we’ve been told, “give it a chance…wait and see…don’t be so quick to judge…”.
Every time we’ve done so, the corrupt criminals that make up the Chimpy administration have taken it as license to do whatever they please, secure in the belief that they can thus postpone accountability indefinitely.
I don’t need a week to make a judgment regarding Pollack…not when the first thing out of her mouth is a condemnation of the media that brought all these problems to light…not when all she does is echo Kiley’s condemnation of the media.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:03 amIs she blaming Jay Leno ?!!
March 13th, 2007 at 11:04 amslappy magoo…thanks for the semantics example, I’ll work on avoiding the use of denigrating endearments..
March 13th, 2007 at 11:06 amplease reassure them that the media makes money on negative stories not by articulating the positive in life — though that is something I will never understand.â€
Washington Post:
March 13th, 2007 at 11:06 amToday the upper management at Walter Reed started a pet program for the wounded veterans to aid in their recovery. Sgt. Wilson who was recovering from a sniper hit to the hip was seen feeding his designated rat “Mickey” and PFC Thompson from Buffalo, NY had the main attraction. He had a trained cockroach circus that always drew a crowd after lunch. There were also art programs started just last week that included classes in Wall Mold Paintings. Overall the morale at Walter Reed has been lifting.
Nice start…….sending E-mail denying the whole thing and blame it on the media..!!

What the hell are you talking about, Robert? She’s talking the same way Kiley did. I hope she does a good job, for the vets’ sake, but this is not promising.
btw, should she be wearing red nail polish while in uniform?
March 13th, 2007 at 11:37 amklyde MG Pollock is an Army Nurse…and this is indeed historic. As an Army Nurse I’m excited that a nurse can lead in this time. Ease up on her. She hasn’t been prepared for this role. Things are in disarray. Much as I’m angry about the conditions at Walter Wonderful, I am excited that one of my sisters attained this position. If anyone can straighten this out, an Army Nurse can. Give her some breathing room.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:41 amGET RID OF HER -OUT OUT OUT –JUST LIKE OUT OF IRAQ THIS YEAR!!!!! TELL DEMOCRATS TO STOP CAVING INTTO REPUBLICANS OR BIG MONEY—–

Women in high office really can’t win can they? Be plain you’re a dyke. Show any hint of femininity you’re not credible.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:46 amAnne,
Why should I give her a break? The arrogance of her email speaks for itself. It’s why I thought she was a doctor.
If you want to go back to when this started I posted saying I thought the ANC should be in charge of the hospitals. Just not this one.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:54 amI like red nail polish, i thought it was kinda loud for a military officer, another color would work.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:55 amWell isn’t she just the most preciuos littl thing.
March 13th, 2007 at 11:57 amEat shit BIATCH.
10. Comment by liz — March 13, 2007 @ 10:38 am
Great post.
That’s because “standards of care” are now being written by the insurance industry. And their only goal is to reduce cost to them. These are the same guys who said that a woman having natural childbirth could be out of the hospital in 12 hours.
The same guys who want every drug “over the counter” so they don’t have to pay for perscriptions.
But all neocons can tell us is how bad national healthcare would be. They never compare the data between our infant mortality rates and other industrial nations though. The citizens of this country have been led like lambs to slaughter.
March 13th, 2007 at 12:06 pmThese Army higher-ups are in a tough position due to the fact that the privatization of hospital services gives them much less authority and power(by design),but the same accountability to the public. Not excusing it, but all they can do is take orders cover-up.

Why is a major being appointed to this COMMAND???
March 13th, 2007 at 12:19 pmAnne, shouldn’t she be promoted to full bird colonel for this exercise??
March 13th, 2007 at 12:21 pmOoops, never mind Maj Gen…That’s a 3 or 4 star.

March 13th, 2007 at 12:21 pm:} oops.
The US Army is as rancid as nearly every other American organization as the rot in your country is nearly complete. It remains now only for the rest of the world to remove the American blight from the face of the Earth.
March 13th, 2007 at 12:25 pmjust looking for early retirement. Is there not one medical officer left in the the medical corps that understands basic nursing care and clean facilities…oh yeah, I forgot…Halliburton of Dubai…nuf said

I full agree that Our Medical syytem is in a big mess/ Heads are rolling, but this stuff did not happen on the lastest sacrificial lambs part. It goes back a long way, and the USA’s not gearing up for casualties.
Walter Reed is run by subcontractors and bean counters.
Gale Pollock has a good reputatio0n among those that have served with her years ago, and I think she may be the person to throw out the garbage.
Tons of good pics of her on the web and the critics post this one, looking like a dork. she ain’t a dork by any means, but a pretty hard charger. she’s wearing those wings for a reason, look at the comendations, award. Earned, not bought.

March 13th, 2007 at 5:13 pm#54 The point is she is a “hard charger” against the press instead of the actual problem. She lost virtually all of her credibility on her first day on the job.

Pollock, THE FISHY MUMMY-FACED VILE LYING BITCH AND Kiley ANUS-KISSER!!!!!
March 13th, 2007 at 10:39 pmIt is reallly easy for all of you to criticize this situation when you do not have all the facts. The only facts you have are those put out by the media. If you are all gullible enough to believe only that then you are all stupider than imaginable. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Gather the facts on your own and then come back to the table but until then you should all keep your unknowledgable opinions to yourself.
March 18th, 2007 at 10:55 amYeah, like the media never got it wrong before or had an agenda. Lighten up people and stay in your lane, which is definitely not in the healthcare business. I am sure anyone could look in on your world and criticize anything you do from a certain perspective.
March 18th, 2007 at 10:58 amGeneral Pollock has a tough task. Keep our overloaded Drs and Nurses inspired and get more work out of them, too, while trying to acquire the congressional funding and attention needed to fix the problems.
Before anyone goes off half-cocked to pick on this gal, I suggest you take the time to find out where she’s been and why she’s here.
If you cannot take the time to do that, then , maybe just keep your un-informed trap shut. No use doing unjust damage AND looking like a fool at the same time.
