Pelosi: ‘We Don’t Need Moral Judgment From The Chairman Of The Joint Chiefs’»

At a press conference today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) responded to yesterday’s remarks by Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Peter Pace calling homosexuality “immoral” and comparing it to adultery.

“We need the most talented people, we need the language skills, we need patriotic Americans who exist across the board in our population,” Pelosi said, calling on the military to “carefully consider” reversing the ban on gay service members. “We don’t need moral judgment from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs.” Watch it:

Senior aides to Pace said today that he “won’t apologize for calling homosexuality immoral” despite calls by advocacy groups.

Digg It!

Transcript:

PELOSI: I was disappointed in the moral judgment that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs made this morning, or whenever it was, reported this morning, and I was more interested in the statement made by Gen. Shalikashvilii, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs, when he said that, “If America is ready for a military policy of nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation, the timing of the change should be carefully considered.” I think the military should carefully consider changing the policy. We need the most talented people, we need the language skills, we need patriotic Americans who exist across the board in our population. We don’t need moral judgment from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Exactly, Ms. Speaker. If Pace is a “general”, then he should only speak to how a homosexual might directly impact military operations and if gays beome part of the military openly, then he should insure that troops accept that decision. Period. If Pace is a “reverend”, then he should stick to talking to his congregation.

  2. Flaco Says:

    Homosexuals are Immoral.

We do not use the”I” word here at TP unless it is used for Bush.

    Lick Zooeys ass, Nancy!

  4. Lupeyg2 Says:

Sexual orientation is more important than the security of our nation according to the wingnuts.

  5. mparker Says:

The general needs to be questioned on the morality of the invasion of a soverign nation under false pretense, torture, propaganda and the use of white phosphorous.

The general needs to explain the morality of occupying a country in the middle of a civil war where the occupier cannot protect either side let alone their own forces.

  6. jayjaybear Says:

Especially when our military is so hurting for warm bodies that it’s waiving the other moral restrictions and allowing ex-convicts and folks who would otherwise have been rejected for things like drug convictions and such to join up.

But apparently things like theft, murder, illegal drug use and all of that are less immoral than homosexuality…

  7. smafdy Says:

Pace has risen to the top by fellating those above him in the first place (I have never heard one statement from him that was not the party line).

Takes a lot of nerve to criticise others.

You, Flaco, are Immoral. And Idiotic. And Insufferable. And Incontinent. And Irrelevant. Would you like to see a few more “I” words here at TP, not used for Bush?

  10. Anonymous By Choice Says:

Bill Hicks made fun of this topic by immitating a US troop, saying (roughly):

“I don’t want to see a homosexual next to me while I’m busy killing children! That’s just disgusting!”

    Prove it.

Way to go Speaker Pelosi! You stand for TRUE American values, of allowing everyone the chance to succeed.

A truly ironic statement, Flaco, after preaching that we don’t use the word Immoral.

Think real hard about that, dear, you might figure out that you are a moron of the highest order.

Do try not to strain any brain muscles.

  14. Raven Says:

The general needs to be questioned on the morality of armed forces where every female soldier needs to have a female companion with her to go to the latrines at night.
For protection from male troops, in her same unit.
And where the ordeal of having to wake someone at night, just to go to the latrine with her, causes soldiers to not drink enough water that they have died in their sleep from dehydration.
This is documented, so spare me the troll attacks…

  15. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

Not to impugn your forensic skills, Zooey, but I’d hardly classify Flaco’s incoherent gibberings as ‘argument’. ^_^

    Homophobes are Immoral.

  20. Laura Says:

If Adultery and Homosexuality are both considered immoral - wouldn’t that kind of stigmatize several of those running on the GOP ticket for President?

  21. FunMe Says:

No more HOMOPHOBES or HATE group type people like Pace iin the military!

“People” like Pace are the REAL PROBLEM in America.

They spend more time spilling out their DISCRIMINATORY UN AMERICAN viewpoints instead of fighting a war with a plan or taking care of our veterans with good quality health care.

These do do head needs to be fired!

  22. Ann Coulter Says:

    Pace is a faggot.

  23. KingCranky Says:

I wonder if Pace even considered the likelihood that his irrational comment will more than likely be used by Fred Phelps and the WBC at their picketing of soldiers funerals

Good Job there Gen Pace, give rhetorical ammunition to as nasty a parasite as Phelps and the rest of his in-bred clan that makes up the Westboro Baptist Church

Now, let’s see if Pace has the guts to say that blather to the families of gay soldiers and marines killed in combat

It was on one of the same days when Busch was in Brazil, sorry I can’t be more precise about the time.
This is not the first time this situation has been reported on, it began relatively early in the Iraq invasion.

Sounds like a logical comment to me. I don’t see the injection of morality in it though. Please point that out.

  32. R Says:

Pace doesn’t know the difference between man’s law and God’s law- not that it would make any difference to the likes of an ignorant, morally-deficient coward like him. Who put him up to this, anyway? I’m sure it didn’t originate in his primitive grey matter.

  33. Willy Says:

While we’re on the subject of morality, we’ve never had such an immoral administration in this country. And General Pace has the nerve to say “homosexuality is immoral”. How many Iraqi babies have you killed today, General Pace?

  34. hacker bob Says:

    Comment by dlet — March 13, 2007 @ 1:50 pm

I never said Nancy said it. My statement was pretty simple, don’t read too much into it.

But if you want to disect statements:

I was disappointed in the moral judgment that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs made this morning, or whenever it was

Nancy does not even know if it was a moral judgement…

I was more interested in the statement made by Gen. Shalikashvilii, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs, when he said that, “If America is ready for a military policy of nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation, the timing of the change should be carefully considered

And she does not know if America is ready for a change in policy and she is not saying that she is pushing for a change in policy.

PERSONALLY, I could care less. But that is MY opinion. Pace has a right to his opinion, Pelosi has a right to her opinion.

Klyde, Raven does real, constructive work around here. So you run along and look stuff up yourself. Or you could just stuff it up yourself. Whatever.

  36. Shane Says:

Wow I’m hearing Pace’s comments on CNN right now and it sounds even dumber than it did in print.

  37. klyde Says:

That would be the one where Amy Goodman talked with an expert in sexual violence in the military. I watched that episode.

The source of the allegation was Col Janis Karpinski and it lacks credibility. The problem of sexual harrassment and sexual abuse is real and pervasive. (Although it is less than in the general population.) When someone like Col Karpinski slings ridiculous stories like that around it hurts real efforts to battle sexual violence.

  38. Regis Says:

Just because Gen Pace said homosexual acts are immoral does not make them so. He should have said that he believes them to be so. There is quite a difference.

  39. klyde Says:

Hey shane I asked Raven a question she answered. I disagree with it but I do so respectfully. You on the other hand can go f*ck yourself assw*pe!

  40. Texas Juice Says:

As a straight vet, I can tell you that me and my friends did some CRAZY stuff when I was in the USN. I don’t think allowing out gays is giong to sink the morality ship. Also, I bet most gays would keep their pref. fairly private.

I think the real issue is bigotry to openly gay soldiers. That is the real issue, what do we do about that?

  41. Raven Says:

    Shane, dude, chill…;)
I understood klyde (and understand him to be on “our side” as well) in that he was just asking for info…

    Sorry Klyde

The most immoral act in the world is killing another human being and he is the Chairman of the Joint Death Committee.

Mere obfuscation by the “Chairman of the Grim Reaper Society”

I think perhaps klyde was sidetracked, he(?) thinks I’m a woman ( blush)….

  46. paulie Says:

So many people, so little thought. If they were to change the law to allow the openly gay to serve. ANY person in the military could then demand an out. Yep they have a contract, and if you modify it you have to get tehm to sign it again.

So, go ahead, see the outcome.

Interesting point, paulie. If correct, it could explain why the Army’s so reticent to change the policy….they know damned well that they’d see upwards of 80-90% refusal, now that the soldiers know what they know.

  49. valiant venus Says:

Thank goodness for strict censorship, TP!! (sarc off)

General Pace is entitled to his opinions -I trust that is still allowed in the politically correct progressive sphere.

  50. Raven Says:

Certainly no offense taken, klyde, transference, yes, and I’ve also been commenting a number of times today regarding women’s issues…
I think America, and the world at large, would be better served, and be a more peacable place if women had (at least) an equal place…

  51. TF-MA Says:

BTW notice whenever Congress is bearing down on the Imbecilic, Idiotic, Inept, Immoral, Intransient Bush scandals, some indecent wingnut conveniently bloviates (i.e. :shares” their values) and the media gratefully diverts attention from the issue, the Purge of the U.S. Attorneys, and it’s “You Owe Us An Apology/No I Won’t” kubuki theater time?

Last week it was Coultergeist, now Pastor Pace serves his Commander’s Codpiece. How many times are we going to allow the fascists to play, spay and splay us?

The following shows you hopw a November landslide emboldened Dem Leaders:

From the AP: “House Democratic leaders are backing away from a plan to scale back U.S. involvement in the Iraq war by using Congress’ most powerful tool — withholding money in the budget.”
“Instead, party officials said Tuesday, leaders are weighing a proposal that would attempt to embarrass Bush into abandoning his war strategy. Under a plan discussed behind closed doors, Democrats probably would fund President Bush’s entire $93.4 billion request for war spending this year but require that any troops sent into battle that don’t meet certain standards receive a presidential waiver and that Congress be notified of the shortcoming.”

  54. Mikeyes Says:

While I totally disagree with with GEN Pace had to say, it really is up to Congress to change the law on DADT. The military can’t change the policy many more than I can change the policy on speed limits and stay within the law.

This Congress has the means to do so, so do it!

So if we converge all of your various claims, you’re OK for some abortion, and some death penalty, and you think it’s OK to be gay if you’re a closet case, but you’re pro-war. Shane, I agree. She’s another Ann Coulter clone, that formulaically tries to *feminize* liberals, to cover up their own *impotence*, while pushing a *Nationalist* rhetoric that more aptly belongs on a tiny German man, with an ugly mustache and delusions of grandeur.

Here’s a great article on the entire schtick of this fringe group, and how it has collapsed under its own failure.

She’s a complete lunatic. She one made a sick joke about a supposedly *dead-child* of hers - that doesn’t even exist. She also has made jokes about mass murdering arabs, and economic destruction of everyone in the middle east that isn’t Israel. Anyone that disagrees with even the smallest of Israeli policies she labels as an anti-semitic terrorist. To call her a *fringe* zionist is a very, very, kind description. She’s a complete fraud, and disgusting excuse for a human being. She needs to share the same padded cell that Coulter should be placed in.

Here’s her page, although you have to look carefully, she’ll disappear on the page when she turns sideways.

Of course the General can personally think whatever he likes. He can even be opposed to gays in the military for some of the more traditionally stated reasons.

It is, however, improper is anyone in his position to categorize sexual persuasion in terms of morality. OK, so is unwed fornication or use of birth control, in some circles…..but it doesn’t mean that you deny heterosexuals access to the military because they may practice it.

  68. Some Soldier's Mom Says:

You all can think what you like abot the fine Gen. Pace… but the truth is HE IS ENFORCING FEDERAL LAW AS DETERMINED BY THE CONGRESS. go here if you don’t believe me

As a 20 year veteran I can attest that the government can change the conditions of your service (promised training, duty stations, even length of service) if necessity requires it and you are still required to fulfill the service obligation you originally signed for. Besides, the DADT policy is not part of any contract; it is part of Military Regulations and they can be changed at any time without affecting anyone’s contractual obligations.

    A st*pid quest - yep. That’s all a st*pid Anorexic c*nt like you could ever ask!

Allowing people to make their own choices without condemning this is a form of *morality* indeed. One that an immoral and st*pid hateful venom filled c*nt like you wouldn’t understand. But it’s the morality of not-judging. It doesn’t require you to *support* anything, except the rights of others to choose.

However your strawman proves that you support the rights of *bigots* to spew hatred and oppression against others.

Answer me this Might C*nt! Have you always been a self loathing homophobe? Or is it the result of you being so Skinny that you no longer get your monthly reminder that you’re a woman? Perhaps you’re on your way to a more *manly* life?

Have him go to Walter Reed and straighten out the moral problems there for practice. He should take care of military business. That is his job. His comments are strictly personal, although he can affect multitudes of people’s lives by his attitudes and actions.

  87. John Says:

Since when do we not need moral judgment from our leaders? Where would we be without the courageous moral leadership of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and others to overturn slavery and fight for civil rights for blacks in the US?

In his 1963 “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” Rev. King wrote, “A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law, or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law.” This week General Pace is drawing the same kind of moral conclusion as King as, it appears, he looks to God’s moral law for guidance. We need this kind of leadership in a society where it is becoming far more common to follow our passions, rather than an established moral anchor.

I’m thankful for leaders like General Pace. If we succumb to Rep. Pelosi’s call to abandon moral judgment, we will only drift steadily toward the tyranny of what feels good at the moment - in other words, anarchy.

Gays and lesbians shed the same red blood as any of us.They die, are injured ,survive in one piece, are discharged or continue their careers in the military-not unlike all of us who have served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and now Iraq and Afganistan. Keep moral judgements in your own pocket, Gen Pace.

  89. Donna Says:

Ms Pelosi stated we need talented people, language skills and Patriotic Americans in regards to General Pace. Check out her bio next to General Pace. Politicians are a dime a dozen. This is America, freedom of speech, whether she agrees with General Pace or not, he has a right to his opinion like every other American!

  91. Citizen sane Says:

I sruggle with ethics, don’t think I don’t. I was raised Catholic, but in learning of protestant ideas, I quit going and have lived in frustrated confusion ever since. So I don’t fit with athiests or religious people very well. Still I have an opinion if you want to hear me out.

One thing seems clear… The need for moral judgement from the joint Chiefs is desperately needed. Nancy Pelosi is wrong. I may be taking this out of context. It’s a bit gray. There is much fear by many that the attacks of 911 at the world trade center was an inside job (see http://www.infowars.com) It is put for that operation Northwoods back in 1962 would have seen the military bomb US cities to trick the American People to support a war on Cuba. All the Joint chiefs approved the plan. The Commander in Chief, John F Kennedy said NO! I believe the joint chiefs SHOULD hAVE exercised moral judgement in this situation, but didn’t. Now we have a President that cannot even understand why torture is a bad policy , even if that judgement is not made on the basis of religion. So now Pelosi doesn’t want Moral Judgement on the part of the Joint Chiefs? I believe the joint chiefs need to make moral judgement that applies to the MILITARY. Be thankful that the military keeps out of our civilian lives! When civilians deny moral judgement to Military leaders affecting how thier own troops must behave we have crossed the line… a dangerous line. At least if we insist that such people be allowed in, the option should be given the military on how to position these troops.

My own position, if given the duty to protect my people in combat would look something like this:

For years it was policy to have men only in combat position. When the troops returned from combat, they could go out and get sex in a civilian situation. Now we get situations such as rape of women, and peeps don’t know why? One must become an animal in combat situations. Hormones including adrenaline run high. After killing a bunch of people, I’m sure rape seems trivial to some of these men. And the higher stress becomes, some snap. Some bad people get into the military and don’t need the stress of war to do bad things. Why do peeps think that for so long, men wanted their daughters to stay out of the military?. Believe me I do not condone any rape. If I was in the military and some gay guy raped me, I would probably kill him. Is it wrong? God says that it’s wrong to kill, so war is already wrong. I’m sure if war was enough to excuse a rape, I think I would be justified in killing my rapist. But situations like this are best avoided. That’s why a tight knit group fights better and survives better. If women and gays must be in the military, let them have thier own units. Segregate them. If women want to be in the military segregate them. People want to say being homosexual is OK. I think to some its not OK and those people should be respected as well. If a straight person would object to a stranger of the opposite sex watching them in the bathroom, out of fear , why can’t gay people understand how creepy it is for some straight person would be uncomfortable with a gay person watching, especially if that other person were twice as big or strong.
