“The White House was deeply involved in the decision late last year to dismiss federal prosecutors, including some who had been criticized by Republican lawmakers,” the New York Times reports. “Last October, President Bush spoke with Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales to pass along concerns by Republicans” about several U.S. Attorneys. Weeks later, they were forced out.

In related news, Attorney General Gonzales’ chief of staff Kyle Sampson resigned yesterday in the wake of the U.S. Attorney scandal. Sampson was involved in generating the list of prosecutors to fire.

“The National Association of Evangelicals has endorsed an anti-torture statement saying the United States has crossed ‘boundaries of what is legally and morally permissible‘ in its treatment of detainees and war prisoners in the fight against terror.”

President Bush yesterday called for Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. “It seems like to me, we’ve got to get this done by August,” he said. But Bush said his goal was to find a bill that “most Republicans are comfortable with” in the Senate before asking for input from Democrats.

More questions about Halliburton’s move to Dubai. Senate Commerce Committee member Byron Dorgan (D-ND) asked yesterday, “I want to know, is Halliburton trying to run away from bad publicity on their contracts? Are they trying to run away from the obligation to pay U.S. taxes? Or are they trying to set up a corporate presence in Dubai so that they can avoid the restrictions that currently exist on doing business with prohibited countries like Iran?”

News of Scooter Libby’s guilty verdict has brought in $70,000 in Internet contributions in a week. Wealthy supporters like publisher Steve Forbes and lobbyist Wayne Berman plan to raise much more; actor Fred Thompson plans a Washington fundraiser that may bring in more than $100,000.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) introduced a resolution yesterday to allow Al Gore to stage a global-warming concert on the Capitol grounds. Gore’s Live Earth event will feature seven major concerts on seven continents to help bring attention to global climate change.

Britain “became the first country to propose legislation setting binding limits on greenhouse gases.” “In its draft Climate Change Bill, the government said carbon dioxide emissions had to be cut by 60 percent by 2050, set out five-year carbon-cutting budgets to reach the target and created an independent monitoring committee to check progress annually.”

And finally: Hagel brings out the comedian in political pundits. Reacting to Sen. Chuck Hagel’s (R-NE) bizarre non-announcement yesterday, the Hotline called the speech “the biggest letdown since ‘Joey’ spun off from ‘Friends.’” CNN reporter Dana Bash added, “This trip was all steak and no sizzle.”

Not good enough. Not nearly good enough.

This administration is like a cancer on this nation. The more visible bits are finally being noticed, but if you just remove part of the tumor, the remaining section will continue to grow and compromise the system.

Our nation has cancer, and the prognosis is terminal. If there is to be any hope of survival, we must aggressively treat the entire cancer, starting immediately. Part-measures such as getting rid of the AG’s chief of staff, or even the AG himself, aren’t going to do the job. Chimpy & Co. will just ensure another, equally corrupt and malignant crony fills the vacated position.

We must rip this cancer out by the roots, and the only way to accomplish that is wholesale impeachment of this administration. Impeachment of all the corrupt elements of this corrupt and criminal administration is the only way we will save this nation, and subsequent shipping of said corrupt elements to the Hague to stand trial for war crimes is the only way we will salvage this nation’s reputation in the world community.

When the Democratic Party got in power, the first thing they did was to pull impeachment off the table. That sent a clear signal to Bush that he can continue doing whatever he wants.

The rest of us hoped that they would wait as evidence mounted. Well, evidence has mounted. Bush has had 2 1/2 more months of free reign. (spelling intentional) Instead of working on a way out of Iraq, Bush has sent more into harm’s way, this time sending invalids and other troops, without proper training, armor nor equipment.

And still the Democrats keep impeachment off the table.

Republicans, unafraid to use the filibuster (unlike the Democrats) have effectively blocked all reforms.

Anybody thought about using MoveOn, ThinkProgress, et al to form a Progressive Party with a 50 State Strategy of our own?

The criminality and sleaziness of this administration is so pervasive that there seems to be nothing new that can be said to condemn them. The Congress seems to take one step forward and two back when it comes to reining the lawlessness. The country seems to be in favor of reversing w’s policies, but the lawmakers seem not to recognize it. Even though there was a major rejection of the rethugs, the dims, for the most part, are still acting as though they are in the minority and have no backing. 13. Dale Says:

    Interesting article. Some quotes:

Some of Mr. Gore’s centrist detractors point to a report last month by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations body that studies global warming. The panel went further than ever before in saying that humans were the main cause of the globe’s warming since 1950, part of Mr. Gore’s message that few scientists dispute. But it also portrayed climate change as a slow-motion process.

It estimated that the world’s seas in this century would rise a maximum of 23 inches — down from earlier estimates. Mr. Gore, citing no particular time frame, envisions rises of up to 20 feet and depicts parts of New York, Florida and other heavily populated areas as sinking beneath the waves, implying, at least visually, that inundation is imminent.

So too, a report last June by the National Academies seemed to contradict Mr. Gore’s portrayal of recent temperatures as the highest in the past millennium. Instead, the report said, current highs appeared unrivaled since only 1600, the tail end of a temperature rise known as the medieval warm period.

Attorney General Janet Reno today demanded the prompt resignation of all United States Attorneys, leading the Federal prosecutor in the District of Columbia to suggest that the order could be tied to his long-running investigation of Representative Dan Rostenkowski, a crucial ally of President Clinton.

Dems Abandon Iran War Authority Provision
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    March 13, 2007
    Filed at 8:57 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic leaders are stripping from a military spending bill for the war in Iraq a requirement that President Bush gain approval from Congress before moving against Iran.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other leaders agreed to remove the requirement concerning Iran after conservative Democrats as well as other lawmakers worried about its possible impact on Israel, officials said Monday.

The Iran-related proposal stemmed from a desire to make sure Bush did not launch an attack without going to Congress for approval, but drew opposition from numerous members of the rank and file in a series of closed-door sessions last week.

Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., said in an interview that there is widespread fear in Israel about Iran, which is believed to be seeking nuclear weapons and has expressed unremitting hostility about the Jewish state.

”It would take away perhaps the most important negotiating tool that the U.S. has when it comes to Iran,” she said of the now-abandoned provision.
”I didn’t think it was a very wise idea to take things off the table if you’re trying to get people to modify their behavior and normalize it in a civilized way,” said Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y.

RE: “move to Dubai” See following item:
    http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/

March 13, 2007 — The actual reason Halliburton and its chairman David Lesar are moving their corporate digs to Dubai is that the UAE’s lax laws on corporate record keeping and the opaqueness of business transactions in the emirates will allow the firm to avoid responding to congressional subpoenas for its scandalous war profiteering in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations. A source with extensive ties in Dubai also reports that after leaving office, Dick Cheney will be spending “a lot of time in Dubai.” WMR was told that Cheney will likely start looking for property in the emirate — there are a number of highly-secured gated communities springing up in Dubai, which is fast becoming the “Hong Kong” of the Middle East.
Halliburton will also be able to avoid paying U.S. corporate taxes as a UAE-headquartered corporation.

  53. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Exley sez:

“leading the Federal prosecutor in the District of Columbia to suggest that the order could be tied to his long-running investigation of Representative Dan Rostenkowski, a crucial ally of President Clinton.”

    Two things, Exley:

First of all, it’s normal for an incoming President to ask for the resignations of the current U.S attorneys at the beginning of his term, so that he may replace them with his team It’s been done by Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan, Carter, Ford, etc., etc., etc.. The D.C. Federal Prosecutor can muse all he likes about Bubba’s alleged ulterior motives, but the fact that such a purge is entirely normal at the beginning of a President’s term, added to the implication that Clinton purged every U.S. attorney just to get rid of the one he had targeted, and your theory rapidly approaches fantastic dimensions.

Second, you still haven’t answered my original question, so I’ll answer it for you. Even when Clinton and the presidents that have gone before have performed their purges, the replacements they selected had to be confirmed by the Senate. Chimpy doesn’t have that limitation. Add that to the recent spate of purges performed in the sixth year of Chimpy’s reign, and there’s ample reason to suspect ulterior motives.

    Exley,

I don’t know about others, but I view the Rostenkowski issue and this current scandal as quite a bit different. QUITE A BIT DIFFERENT.

Let’s assume that Clinton was going to do this, as you imply, to get a friend out of a problem. (Keep in mind that Rostenkowski eventually was sent to prison.)

There’s a tremendous amount of difference between keeping a friend out of trouble and using a FEDERAL office to intentionally prosecute your political opponents as much as possible. Additionally, you have one AG who was supposedly fired because he wouldn’t pursue an election issue that went against the Republicans.

    Can you understand the difference?

  57. Exley Says:

    Dogjudge,

Actually, to be honest, I find this whole U.S. Attorney issue disturbing. While I don’t think it rises to the level of scandal (after all U.S. Attorneys do serve at the pleasure at the president — similar to a cabinet secretary), it is unseemly. There is seemingly an element of politics playing a role in what should be the unbiased pursuit of justice. There is a hint of arrogance that likely filled the White House after its successful re-election campaign of 2004. (A cautionary note: While today’s revelations indicate the WH considered firing all U.S. Attorneys at one point, the fact is they did not do so) … I simply wanted to point out that there was some suspicion that the Clinton administration also engaged in politics when it came to the hiring and firing of U.S. Attorneys. In both cases, such actions leave me uncomfortable.

On a related note, the calls made by Sen. Domenici and Rep. Wilson the the U.S. Attorney were completely out of bounds and improper.

  58. Exley Says:

Actualy, TripMaster, I don’t completely disagree with your posting. You are certainly correct that “it’s normal for an incoming President to ask for the resignations of the current U.S attorneys at the beginning of his term, so that he may replace them with his team.”

As I also pointed out, however, this administration did not ask for the resignations of all U.S. Attorneys–just a few. And I understand what you are saying abut the non-confirmation provision. But the fact is, as far as I know, the administration never utilized that provision.

Like, I said to Dogjudge, I do think these developments are disturbing and certainly indicate a crass political motivation behind some of these firings. I have no problem with Congress taking a look at what happened and why. In fact, I encourage it.

I just wanted to add a historical perspective to all this. But your comments and distinctions are well taken.

That was yesterday. Roger can’t remember what his position is from day to day. Because yesterday he thought all other countries should do something before us.

I realize that no political party is perfect, but have I been living in a cave recently?

It’s just that all of this appears to have gotten to a level that we haven’t seen in decades.

At the same time Pelosi and Ried keep talking about impeachment being off the table. If half of what we’re hearing is true, the President and the administration are guilty of how many crimes?

  66. craig johnson - cognitorex Says:

A Libby Pardon Pardons Cheney’s Propaganda Operation

    Lying has Consequences? Who knew?

Once upon a time Paul Revere rode through the land acclaiming that “The Red Coats are Coming.”

Scooter’s conviction has similarly caused a new message to go out in the politics-first, truth-second neocon propaganda cabal leading the Bush White House.

It’s a strange concept to this crowd and they’ve become quite nervous. As they crowd around the water coolers, the buzz is: “Did ya hear? There are actually certain lies and certain circumstances for which I, you and the big boys can be held to be legally accountable.”

Any politician or pundit that calls for Scooter to be pardoned should first be asked to state without reservation that one of the normal and acceptable operations of the American executive is to initiate and oversee an office of propaganda that deliberately and with malice aforethought manipulates the truth to achieve a political objective.

How can some higher up, i.e.Scooter in this case, not have eventually been caught in legally crossing the line when truth telling has been so relegated to the political trash bin. Cheney, under oath, would have no choice other than pleading the Fifth Amendment.

Those who favor pardoning Scooter symbolically condone and champion the neocon propaganda cabal and each of its lies that initiated the deaths and injuries of thousands of America’s youth.
