“John McCain’s Presidential campaign has launched a neat little gimmick on his campaign website urging folks to sign-up, and track, their picks through the NCAA’s Championship Tournament known as March Madness.” CNN writes it up and can’t resist using the m-word: “Many consider him to be a political maverick, but when it comes to making his college basketball picks, Arizona Sen. John McCain bets on the safe side. The GOP presidential candidate has picked the four number one teams — Kansas, Florida, Ohio State, and North Carolina — to reach the final four, according to a bracket posted on the senator’s presidential campaign website.”
UPDATE: “Gambling on amateur athletics is wrong.” — McCain, in a statement introducing legislation in May 2003 to ban gambling on amateur sports.
No matter what Sen. McCain does he is NOT cool. He needs to stop running for president, resign from the Senate, and return to Arizona.
March 14th, 2007 at 12:37 amSo what? James Garner played a “maverick on TV in the 60’s, but I wouldn’t vote for him for President, either
March 14th, 2007 at 12:46 amI appreciate Mcain and that what he went thru. However I dont see him as a viable candidate for president.
Sorry John, love ya man, enjoy your retirement, relax, grow a garden, enlighten others and always, my man, speak truth.
We appreciate you as a human and a American. God bless you brother.
March 14th, 2007 at 1:05 amIt will take a lot more than basketball picks to give me that warm fuzzy feeling about McCain.
March 14th, 2007 at 1:09 amAl-Maliki tells aides U.S. benchmark deadline is June 30 or his ouster possible
BAGHDAD: Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki fears the Americans will withdraw support for his government — effectively ousting him — if parliament does not pass a draft oil law by the end of June, close associates of the Iraqi leader told The Associated Press on Tuesday.,,,
March 14th, 2007 at 6:33 am“Gambling” involves wagering money. I see no evidencte that McCain is doing that. As ridiculous as he is lately, lets at least be accurate in our criticism.
Move along, folks. There’s nothing to see here.
March 14th, 2007 at 8:58 am#6 yup
It’s actually a pretty good idea, because the ncaa tournament is one of those things where you want to go back and look at the brackets over several days, it has a very broad demographic following, and a very wholesome image. Lots of positive return web traffic. If the message is strong on his site, he could get a lot of exposure through web traffic before the campaigning really gets started.
It’s kind of unfortunate that the best ideas are wasted on the worst candidates – the only chance McCain has of winning is if Clinton is caught shoplifting at Target and Obama has an allergy episode, freaks out, quits politics, and joins the Wiggles.
March 14th, 2007 at 9:14 amNormally I would point out that McCain never said anything about gambling here, but 2 things struck me.
1) Your the largest nerd in the world if your not into the NCAA tourney and you don’t at least have a office bet on the game.
2) I don’t like McCain
So continue on with this drivel. Shred this fool and make yourself look like no fun having dorks.
March 14th, 2007 at 9:25 amnot news, who cares.
March 14th, 2007 at 10:48 amI agree with 6, 7 and 8. I don’t like McCain, but this sort of item makes us look like we are stick-in-the-muds. It would be fun if every candidate had a pick-em.
March 14th, 2007 at 11:02 amI’m boycotting CNN, as a non-legitimate news source. Of course, it goes without saying that John McCain is illigitimate, or rather, his black baby is. Heeere’s… JOHNNY! -heh-
March 14th, 2007 at 12:07 pmIn the case of the PASTY-FACED, FLIP-FLOPPING SCHIZOID PSYCHOPATH McPAIN, “M” ALSO STANDS FOR MEAN, MORIBUND, MENDACIOUS, MUDDLEHEADED, MISANTHROPIC, MASOCHISTIC, MALEFICENT, MUMMIFIED, MALICIOUS, MESS, MALEVOLENT, MURDEROUS, AMONG OTHERS!!
March 14th, 2007 at 3:08 pmMcCain’s website says the NCAA bracket winners will get free swag which is presumably worth money. So it is gambling on amateur sports. Yes, most Americans do it – what they DON’T do is hypocritically say that they are against it and then do it anyway. That’s why McCain sucks.

That is not gambling, gambling is…
money that is risked for possible monetary gain
Nothing hypocritical about it since, to get a free swag no money has to be risked.

The more you are willing to accept responsibility for your actions, the more credibility you will have.
