Pentagon cites Iraq ‘civil war’ for first time.»

“The U.S. military for the first time Wednesday said in a new report that some of the violence in Iraq can be described as a civil war. In its bleakest assessment of the war to date, a quarterly Pentagon report said that last October through December was the most violent three-month period since 2003. … ‘Some elements of the situation in Iraq are properly descriptive of a ‘civil war,’ including the hardening of ethno-sectarian identities and mobilization, the changing character of the violence and population displacements,’” the report says.

This qualifier gives the 25% still living in the wingnut bubble something to hang their argument on.

Huh? The only ‘improvement’ has been in the exposure of this ‘culture of corruption’ of the Republo-fascists.

All day today, from Joke to Whaco, Patty to Roger the Accountability Dodger, we are being hectored about good and bad by an army of apologists for the most morally corrupt, ethically bankrupt, criminally culpable cohorts in American history.

If you would please explain that statement and also please tell why you seem to be gloating. It seems to me that our soldiers died for nothing. We evicted and killed the dictator a while ago, and that was the purpose, right, for going there….war on terror, oh,no wait, WMD’s… If you disagree, please explain why.

  11. Tom3 Says:

LOL! Thats what the NIE said. Some of Iraq could be considered a civil war.

    Alas.

Go Bush? Not go America? At this point, with his administration in tatters, his party eating itself from the inside, it seems pretty clear what this all boils down to for the Bushies: saving face and masking reality.

Golly, you mean only 439 deaths this month, instead of 748? Now that’s progress only a true Bushie could chirp over.

You mean only a handful of republican senators have expressed open repugnance with their own president–not a full 15? Now that’s pride only a true Bushie could lay claim to.

    Go Bush! ;)

  20. Str8edge Says:

Yes he has suffered recent trauma…it’s called exposure of OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE as part of the ‘culture of corruption of this criminal cabal. See, maybe he just can’t believe such a Godly man like Emperor Bush was capable of being a Republo-fascist so people like him and VV have to lash out at those of us who saw through the crap all along.

  25. dlet Says:

So if there is a civil war who are we backing? And how was that decision made? I f we don’t back anyone then why are we there? If they can fight eachother they can certainly fight off some foreign fighters.

What the media and brain deads forget that al Sadr and the other big shots in Iraq are not terrorists. They are Iraqis that want to control the way Iraq will be led into the future. Yet this administration wants to choose which one will lead. Who are we to do that? Sad to say we opened up a zoo and there will be some bad times before it gets straightened out by the IRAQIS.

Well, so far the sectarian violence is way down (Brian Williams just told me so and him not having to wear body armor was all the visual I needed to confirm that) and I fully expect the first quarter 2007 report so show significant improvement in every single area. I am holding my breath for the new Iraqi Oil Law to go through without a hitch, but if it does, who knows — we may be able to pull out some troops by Election Day!

We expected casualties in WWII, that was a war of defense.

As for Vietnam, it s*ck*d, and you fcuking idiots apparently didn’t learn anything from its lessons.

Neither did you learn that the reason we have fewer deaths has more to do with our medicine, than anything. What’s the result of this? We’ll have another 1+ TRILLION dollars in medical care for soldiers that were wounded so some dum bass GOP idiot could play *war*.

Oh please, take your arrogant moralizing tone somewhere else. There’s nothing uncivil about calling someone an uncivil idiot. Civil discourse requires not just the use of civil *language*, but civil *tactics* of debate. That doesn’t exist with most CONs. Calling them idiots and *ssholes is entirely appropriate, when they act that way.

Would you prefer if I simply use the GOP approach, and tell them to go *Cheney* themselves?

As for people getting turned off? Many get turned off by the whiny attitude that says people shouldn’t stand up for themselves, call a spade a spade, and tell someone to fcuk off when they deserve it. People like you are why the trolls call liberals *whiny*, just so you know.

After several months of search to find the illusive WMDS and millions of dollars spent, nothing was found.

After killing two Saddam’s sons, the word was that war will end soon.

After capuring Saddam, hopes were high the war will end.

The war got worse after few years from capturing Saddam.

The truth. Iraq is a *distraction* from dealing terrorism, and has degraded into a Sectarian civil war because of inept and corrupt mismanagement.

Hmm, I’ve been visiting ThinkProgress since it was launched (must be 4 years now anyway) and I stopped posting some time ago, but it wasn’t because the trolls were ruining the threads (although at that point they were making enough trouble to be annoying) it was that the moderator’s wouldn’t allow discussion of certain topics. At that point Judd was trying to crack down on folks that pulled the thread off topic, people hijacking other poster’s names and general bad behavior (name calling, cursing, etc.). I see that the enforcement never really stuck.

Ah well, I say ignore the trolls, I’ve seen other blogs just nix their posts completely. Makes for much better dialogue and exchange of ideas.

    tarzan: http://www.whitehouse.gov/ news/ releases/ 2003/ 05/ 20030501-15.html

“Everywhere that freedom arrives, humanity rejoices; and everywhere that freedom stirs, let tyrants fear. We have difficult work to do in Iraq . . . The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done. Then we will leave, and we will leave behind a free Iraq . . . The liberation of Iraq is a crucial advance in the campaign against terror. We’ve removed an ally of al Qaeda, and cut off a source of terrorist funding. And this much is certain: No terrorist network will gain weapons of mass destruction from the Iraqi regime, because the regime is no more . . .”

“Our war against terror is proceeding according to principles that I have made clear to all: Any person involved in committing or planning terrorist attacks against the American people becomes an enemy of this country, and a target of American justice.”

“Any person, organization, or government that supports, protects, or harbors terrorists is complicit in the murder of the innocent, and equally guilty of terrorist crimes.”

“Any outlaw regime that has ties to terrorist groups and seeks or possesses weapons of mass destruction is a grave danger to the civilized world — and will be confronted.”

“And anyone in the world, including the Arab world, who works and sacrifices for freedom has a loyal friend in the United States of America.”

“Our commitment to liberty is America’s tradition — declared at our founding; affirmed in Franklin Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms; asserted in the Truman Doctrine and in Ronald Reagan’s challenge to an evil empire. We are committed to freedom in Afghanistan, in Iraq, and in a peaceful Palestine. The advance of freedom is the surest strategy to undermine the appeal of terror in the world. Where freedom takes hold, hatred gives way to hope. When freedom takes hold, men and women turn to the peaceful pursuit of a better life. American values and American interests lead in the same direction: We stand for human liberty.”

“The United States upholds these principles of security and freedom in many ways — with all the tools of diplomacy, law enforcement, intelligence, and finance. We’re working with a broad coalition of nations that understand the threat and our shared responsibility to meet it. The use of force has been — and remains — our last resort. Yet all can know, friend and foe alike, that our nation has a mission: We will answer threats to our security, and we will defend the peace.”

“Our mission continues. Al Qaeda is wounded, not destroyed. The scattered cells of the terrorist network still operate in many nations, and we know from daily intelligence that they continue to plot against free people. The proliferation of deadly weapons remains a serious danger. The enemies of freedom are not idle, and neither are we. Our government has taken unprecedented measures to defend the homeland. And we will continue to hunt down the enemy before he can strike.”

“The war on terror is not over; yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide. No act of the terrorists will change our purpose, or weaken our resolve, or alter their fate. Their cause is lost. Free nations will press on to victory.”

  98. Happy PIe Day! Says:

The current admin has denied civil war from the get go and has used such talking points as sectarian and insurgent.

Why try to define this peace operation as war? What was civil war? Is any war civil? The civil war, by American means, was not caused by a nation attacking a sovereign country. This ‘war’ or regime change or freedom operation involves a third party.

The American civil war was not only about slavery, though it was a large part of it. On one side we had Christians whom thought it was their mission to free the slaves, whereas the opposing christians thought it was appropiate to own slaves.

Iraq is secular, and has two opposing muslim factions. Are they warring to free slaves? How does one account for the third group who wishes to free both sides from tribal sectarian violence and install democracy? This is not a two sided issue it has many dimensions and causes.

To define it Iraq as a country enveloped in civil war, though occupied by a foreign entity, is but word play.

We need to redefine our mission. Was Vietnam a civil war? Was the Korean war a civil war? We called them police actions

  105. Happy PIe Day! Says:

The proliferation of deadly weapons remains a serious danger.

Who is the largest supplier of arms?

Since 1992, the United States has exported more than $142 billion dollars worth of weaponry to states around the world.[1] The U.S. dominates this international arms market, supplying just under half of all arms exports in 2001, roughly two and a half times more than the second and third largest suppliers. [2 ] U.S. weapons sales help outfit non-democratic regimes, soldiers who commit gross human rights abuses against their citizens and citizens of other countries, and forces in unstable regions on the verge of, in the middle of, or recovering from conflict.
    http://www.fas.org/asmp/fast_facts.htm

    The question then is this;
Is it better for the US to supply arms and able to track them or is it better to allow Russia or China to sell arms that are harder to track?

The fact is mankind is simply stupidly filled with hate. That is a fact that cannot be ignored be you democratic or republican.

So the “third group” had nothing to do with plunging the entire region into bloody chaos, an innocent, peacekeeping bystander if you will? Holy good shi*, the Kool-Aid is strong with you young Happy Ple Day.

No the point was it cannot be called a civil war if there is a third party.

Exactly why the neo cons are beginning to worry,at the end of this process they can write their memoirs from jail.Their purpose in this war was stated in plain terms ,pre 911 and it had nothing to do with terrorism and everything to do with domination of the developing world and China through the control of oil.( and considering the # of oil and energy executives in Bushes cabinet ,corporate profits !
This is now common knowledge ,I believe and incidentally a war crime by US and international law.In pursuit of their strategy they have violated every aspect of the separation of powers ,which makes us a viable democracy, and this was stated at the onset as well ,planning to re invent the executive branch .While bringing Democracy to Iraq ,they overthrew the nearest democracy to the continental US and shelled out millions to the dictator in Uzbekistan, who boiled people alive in secret prisons ,which is where some of our best intellegence on Al Qaeda came from at the time .
What part of fascism don’t you understand !

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told the Conference on Disarmament that Israel’s nuclear weapons posed a “uniquely grave threat to regional and international peace and security” requiring action by the international community.

In a statement, Israel’s ambassador Itzhak Levanon to the UN in Geneva, said that he and his aides, and the entire U.S. delegation had “abruptly left the room as the Foreign Minister of Iran … was in the middle of a vitriolic speech”.
