Senate conservatives end opposition to Iraq debate.

Breaking a series of roadblocks imposed by conservatives, the Senate voted 89-9 just now “to begin its first formal debate on the Iraq war since Democrats took control of Congress in January.” Bob Geiger explains what comes next.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, the House is voting now on the Presidential Records Act Amendments of 2007, which overturns a Reagan-era executive order issued by President Bush giving “current and former presidents and vice presidents broad authority to withhold presidential records or delay their release indefinitely.” Much more HERE.

    Good news for Conservatism!

  2. barfly says:

Good news for the troops! But that’s not what Patrick cares about . . .

  3. BlueArkansas says:

I know that was a difficult decision. We all know how threatening debate can be!

  4. firehead says:

If you want debate, go on CNN’s Crossfire. The Senate’s duty is to support the President in a time of war.

  5. Patrick1 says:

It is great news because it will expose yet again the left as the enablers of Islamo Fascism.

too bad Patrick Starfish will never figure out why I am laughing so hard at him.
    bwahahahaha

Crossfire was cancelled in 2005. And you are still a fool.

  8. VerbalKint says:

Firehead, once again you have failed to beat Patrick1 for most idiotic comment of the day, though I know you have been giving it your all. Patrick1 achieves a combination of dullwitted stupidy, irrelevance, and sheer randomness that is tough to beat.

  9. VerbalKint says:

#5 Patrick1, thanks for explaining #1, because I was wondering about it.

    100% WRONG!!!!

The Senates DUTY is to debate matters. That is what the Senate was designed for and why it is slower and smaller than the House.

Go back to school and learn how our government is suppose to work before you open your mouth and remove all doubt.

  11. dlet says:

overturns a Reagan-era executive order giving “current and former presidents and vice presidents broad authority to withhold presidential records or delay their release indefinitely.”

So now we get to see 1,000 pages of Reagan’s records of “well, er, um….well you know, er, um….”

and documents that will open up the Iran Contra deal from daddy Bush.

  12. hypatia's father says:

Sure, Patrick1. You just keep telling yourself that. Over and over. Plug your fingers in them ears and let your soothing fantasies take you away to a nice warm… urine-tinged bubble bath.

And as you Bushies continue to piss in your own idealogical bathwater, here are a few other items you may delude yourself into thinking are “good news for conservatism”:

    1. Caught purging political enemies… (with help from fellow Republicans, no less)…
    2. Firing of Gonzo’s staff….
    3. Firing of Walter Reed staff…
    4. Libby found guilty…
    5. Iraq war mismanaged and misguided from the start…

Gosh, that’s some great news for conservatives! Keep it coming. Hey Patrick1, you bring the popcorn–and let the debate begin! ;)

  13. gv says:

    Dear Conservative Senators-
and how many of our kids have died in Iraq during your childish games?

Show me axactly where it says that in the Constitution.
Lets see if you can back up even one statement with a fact.

Don’t work that single brain cell you share with Patrick too hard on it…

  15. barfly says:

Do we really need to drag out the Senate republicans’ comments during Kosovo to show how ill-informed you are?

  20. profmarcus says:

this is precisely the goddam dialogue that ought to be taking place and should have taken place a very long time ago… it’s about friggin’ time our folks in congress started talkin’ about what they REALLY ought to be talkin’ about rather than quibbling over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  21. goose1 says:

Firehead, I take it you were up in arms when the Congress was Impeaching Clinton while we had troops in Bosina?

  22. VerbalKint says:

I just read a few of Patrick’s comments on the Think Fast thread. The one about Sandy Berger was simply precious. Way to go Patrick! Dumbest troll ever!

  23. big papa says:

NOW maybe we can get to the bottom of why…

    …Jeff Gannon…

…spent so much time in the White House…

…I’m gonna love to hear General Pace’s spin on that…

  24. R says:

You mean that now after we are four years into this illegal war we can finally talk about why we are in it? Wow… is this a great country, or what? Thanks, conservatives. Your restraint has really been instrumental in helping me to realize SO MUCH… wrong.

  25. chimpeach says:

This is beautiful. They’re going to overturn Bush’s executive order, the one he used to try to hide his and his dad’s secrets. This is why we needed the Dems to take back the House and Senate. There is no way this could happen if the Rethugs hadn’t been beaten. Life is sweet.

  26. JesusChrist_GodofWAR says:

It’s about time Senators talk about something serious.

Hey, Konservatives! Got OSAMA? I thought not. You had 5 years to bring him to justice, dead or alive. So STFU! until you’ve done the right thing for this country. Oh, that’s right. You can’t because you don’t know what right, not even for yourselves. Fools.

  27. TripMaster Monkey says:

    chimpeach sez:

Pardon my pessimism, chimpeach, but I’m not going to hold my breath…

  28. doro says:

Even more good news. Let the truth prevail.

    And Patrick1, Firehead, you’re pathetic.

  29. Marie says:

Patrick1 and Firehead are fonts of misinformation.
I wonder where they get their cockamamie ideas – if they come to them in dreams, or are they being fed. Their ability to twist facts and ignore history to somehow defend their insane versions of history and truth leaves me speechless.

  30. Shawn says:

Nice timing by the GOP to give in to the debate…I’m assuming they thought the Pace comment was going to give them cover from the attorney general problems.

  31. Topper says:

The info on the Presidential Records Act is wrong–it’s about overturning Bush’s executive order, not anything Reagan did.

  32. ggibson says:

The more debate on the Democrats surrender the better for all Americans

    Comment by Patrick1

Its impossible to surrender when you were never attacked in the first place.

  33. CONservative says:

Again, I missed the propagandists and Kool-Aid swillers enlightening us with their stupidity when this story initially posted. Sadly, they’ll be back.

  34. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Marie sez:

I wonder where they get their cockamamie ideas – if they come to them in dreams, or are they being fed.

Patrick1 regurgitates Rush Limbaugh talking points verbatim, without really understanding what he’s saying (let alone why it’s wrong)…much like a parrot will mindlessly repeat its master phrases to earn a cracker.

firehead, on the other hand, seems to be a genuinely mentally disturbed individual. His idiocy must be original, as it’s improbable that someone impaired enough to come up with similar non-thoughts could convince anyone else to ‘feed’ them.

  35. VerbalKint says:

I’m not sure whether Patrick1 is even a living person. Its comments read like they were generated by a crude computer program. It is totally non-responsive to other comments on the thread, and barely responsive to the thread topic.

  36. Str8edge says:

I don’t think either of these posters, Patrick or Firehead can pass a US Citizenship test.

The more debate on the Democrats surrender the better for all Americans Comment by Patrick1

You really should get better talking points. These *Nationalist* ones, just make your entire party look stupid, desperate and foolish. Wait – you *are*!

Now if you mean *failure* in Iraq, funny, that’s what the Iraq Study Group said would happen with the current policy, unless we took a different direction. Sounds more like the “Republican Surrender to Failure* is why you don’t want to debate!

    Loser!

  40. Roger_Roger says:

This is a very positive step indeed. Sadly, like the article says, this resolution will get fillibustered and it will never get a vote which is EXPECTED. This just once again proves the DEMS lack of interest in really ending this war even though they promised. They had their chance and passed on it when they decided to support this war and extend it by voting yes in support of the Iraq war and the funding Bush asked of them. I guess the fact that they are working with Bush and saying yes to whatever he wants is a sour spot with this crowd. I bet this little resolution that will never get a vote will be more then enough to pacify this crowd sadly.

  41. Patrick1 says:

I want Harry Reid to stand up on the floor of the Senate and explain how the United States of America fleeing to Okinawa is a good idea.

  42. Patrick1 says:

Maybe the libs can debate themselves.

Those are my principles. If you don’t like them I have others
    By streiff

One can’t help but contrast what the Democrat “leadership” in the senate is proposing for a binding resolution on Iraq, a resolution that requires a complete withdrawal by March 2008.

SEN. HARRY REID (D-NV): “As Far As Setting A Timeline … That’s Not A Wise Decision, Because It Only Empowers Those Who Don’t Want Us There.” (Sen. Reid, Remarks To The National Press Club, 01/31/05)

SEN. HILLARY CLINTON (D-NY): “I Don’t Believe It’s Smart To Set A Date For Withdrawal. I Don’t Think You Should Ever Telegraph Your Intentions To The Enemy So They Can Await You.” (Village Voice, 9/22/05 Via “Clinton II: Parsing Clinton’s History On Iraq,” National Journal’s The Hotline, 02/13/07)

SEN. JOE BIDEN (D-DE): “A Deadline For Pulling Out … Will Only Encourage Our Enemies To Wait Us Out.” It Would Be “A Lebanon In 1985, And God Knows Where It Goes From There.” (Sen. Biden, Remarks To The Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C., 06/21/05)

SEN. EVAN BAYH (D-IN): “I, For Example, Am Not In Support Of Circling A Date On A Calendar And Saying, ‘No Matter What, We’re Out On That Date.’” (John M. Donnelly and Tim Starks, “Iraq Timetable Gains Momentum,” CQ Weekly, 03/12/07)

As my old battalion commander used to say, “this looks just like a monkey humping a football.”

  43. peterh says:

Just saw where the “Presidential Records Act Amendments” passed 333-93….Yahoo….from a liberal standpoint, we finally get to examine the records of Raygun & shrub I and to be sure, there will be some unkindly facts to emerge with regard to current administration officials. Conversely, conservatives get to look into Clinton’s records in 2013. It’s a win-win for both sides, yet, the 93 critters that voted no, may fear that the republicans will come out looking uglier…..and that fear shall be deemed correct……and so it is written….

  44. Patrick1 says:

    We know Clinton’s record: failure.

  45. Roger_Roger says:

#42 The Dems debate with themselves is pretty much over. Pelosi has called her Dem underlings and demanded they simply vote yes to extend the war. Their main Pres canidates also are in favor of extending the war. The only place they claim to want the war to end now is TV.

  46. wayne says:

Gee , a democracy where the citizenry are clued into the mysterious world of the elected official ,and even get to know what they’redoing while in office ,what a concept !
Democracy is the opposite of secret government !
This is not a partisan issue ,everybody wins when there is oversight and accountabilty present .
Does this mean I’ll be able to find out if Albert Gonzales has been violating my civil rights ?

  49. Marie says:

I don’t believe Clinton’s presidency was a failure at all.
8 years of peace and propsperity.
Successful prosecution of the bombers of the first WTC bombing. International relations at a high.
There were plenty of troubles, sure, as with every presidency, but historians and people who are qualified to judge have not declared his presidency as failed — where do you get the info that causes you to make such a broad and mistaken judgment?

  51. Roger_Roger says:

I certainly don’t look at Clinton as a failure either. The man made some huge errors, but all Presidents do. He also did some wonderful things. My only big issue was when he didn’t truly go to war against the terrorists that killed Americans under his watch. He did an average job with the economy and didn’t raise taxes in any hurtful way which was good. He bettered our Education system as well as other social programs which was also good. Overall, I would give him a B+. I would give Bush on the other hand a C. Bush’s management of the Iraq war has been poor. He has also increased the size of the federal budget to an insane size. He also failed to get anything done about Social Security even though most normal Americans see it as the largest threat the USA stability moving forward. Furthermore, he did a piss poor job with our education system. On the positive, he did cut taxes somewhat and our economy is still doing fine (Our trade deficit is tighting which isn’t good but needs to be watched). He has also approved a few very good SC justices and at least seems to stand up for what he believes right or wrong which I wish we had more of in Washington.

  52. big papa says:
