ThinkFast: March 14, 2007

911books3.jpg

The Senate voted 60-38 to approve legislation “to implement many of the remaining reforms suggested by the Sept. 11 commission.” Ten Republicans crossed party lines to approve the measure; Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) skipped the vote to fundraise in California. Bush has threatened to veto the bill “over a provision to expand the labor rights of 45,000 airport screeners.”

78: Percentage of Americans who “do not think the Bush administration has done enough to care for [Iraq war] veterans,” a new CBS/NYT poll shows. “A majority of Republicans agree with all Americans overall on this issue.”

The New York Times reveals more “shameful details…on the neglectful care extended to soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.” The Army’s inspector general reports that “more than nine out of 10 disabled veterans have been kept waiting for benefit evaluations beyond the 40-day limit set by the Pentagon. Some have waited up to a year and a half for benefits.”

“A national survey showing a soaring number of homeowners failed to make their mortgage payments in the last quarter of 2006 rattled lawmakers in Washington and the markets in New York yesterday, as the Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 2 percent, or nearly 243 points.”

“The federal government is sanctioning agreements that cost whistle-blowers their jobs after they expose safety and security lapses at nuclear facilities and toxic waste sites, Labor Department records show.”

“The Army Corps of Engineers, rushing to meet President Bush’s promise to protect New Orleans by the start of the 2006 hurricane season, installed defective flood-control pumps last year despite warnings from its own expert that the equipment would fail during a storm.”

A flurry of bombings shook Iraq today. Gen. David Petraeus “said car bombs are proving the biggest headache for troops trying to enforce a new security plan.” There has been a “recent rise in violence” in northern Iraq that many blame on insurgents fleeing a security crackdown in the capital.

Detroit auto makers are teaming up with Toyota “to slow gathering momentum in the Democratic Congress to legislate tightened fuel-economy standards for cars and trucks.” The automakers are expected to push for new guidelines that would allow them to “sell more large trucks.”

And finally: “American Pie” star Chris Klein was on Capitol Hill yesterday testifying before the House Appropriations subcommittee on the interior. Rep. Norm Dicks (D-WA) asked him what it’s “really like to work with Reese Witherspoon.” “Amazing,” replied Klein. Today is also his 28th birthday and he plans to stick around DC and visit the Smithsonian museums.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Wow, now there is something we sure don’t need, safety and security at our “nooklear” power plants and at our toxic waste sites. /sarcasm
Seriously… WHY WHY WHY? I guess stupid is the norm now. Unbelievable.

Sorry, but that’s what you get when you have an administration in power that’s declared war on the middle class.

  3. Briseadh na Faire says:

    Why nothing about this?

nancy Pelosi just removed an amendment to the supplemental spending bill that would have forced Bush to get authorization from Congress before attacking Iran. So the supplemental bill proposed by Speaker Pelosi will give Bush another $100 billion for the war in Iraq, and will keep open the door to an attack on Iran!

Apparently, this was done at the request of Israel?

Do you realize that having language prohibiting Bush from attacking Iran, then removing that language, Bush will interpret that as Congressional authorization to attack Iran?

Watch, shortly after the funding gets approved bombs will begin dropping on Iranian soil.

The Blue Dogs and AIPAC wanted Bush to retain authority to strike Iran, and even though Pelosi was booed when she spoke in front of AIPAC, they clapped when she talked tough about Iran. So Pelosi seems to be just fine with Bush’s authority to wage war on Iran. What a mess.

“Gregory Keating, a Boston lawyer who represents employers in whistle-blower cases, said the restrictions are legitimate. “These agreements are knowing, they’re voluntary, and you have a federal agency putting its stamp of approval on them that says the public interest is covered,” he said.”

So, the whistleblower joins the ranks of the permanently unemployed, his or her co-workers learn that if you report conditions that could lead to a nuclear meltdown you will be financially ruined, thus shutting them up, and the public interest is served, because the government says so.

Yet when there is the inevitable “incident” at a nuclear plant, these very same workers will get blamed, not upper management.

I wonder if Las Vegas is taking odds on which plant will meltdown first?

Any nation that kills for OIL is immoral, and it never can be justified, nor can it be swept under the carpet!

Petroleum Cartel Conglomerate lusts for profits, and will rape any nation to get OIL, so Iraq gets screwed!

The United States government has an unholy alliance, with BIG OIL, which means pact of warfare to get it!

Forcing volunteer soldiers to sacrifice their very lives, to secure OIL fields, is very sinister and criminal thing!

So it’s shameful for any member of the US Congress to fund the Iraq OIL grab and refuse to end the fiasco!

American Public have a right to accuse DC politicians of getting kickbacks, from OIL CEOs, so real bribery!

If Killing for OIL is the only way to get the black-gold, then it’s time to ride bicycles or to own horses again!

I do NOT want to drive a automobile, if children have to die in Iraq to get OIL, so warfare must be stopped!

PS: Contact Reps and Senators in DC to demand ending Iraq War now!

#59 Walmarts #1 reason for going green certainly isn’ the goodness of their heart. It was a business decision influenced by what they felt would promote a proper image and stimulate more business. I am sure they feel good about it as well since it is completely good all the way around. I certainly wouldn’t expect them to do this on their own if they didn’t see an upside. Their shareholders/owners would obvious object and stop it if it wasn’t a good business practice. Shareholders always get in the way of companies making bad choices as they should. I would guess they did some studies and found the savings/promotion aspect to be a net positive for cash flows. I say good for them once again as they continue to be a damn bright light in America and there shareholders have been rewarded accordingly as they should.

Where I grew up there was a lot of development going on. New homes, businesses and roads were being put in. The fact they were being built mostly in an area that had been polluted with chemicals and garbage for the previous 70 years seemed to be well ignored by most. Heck as kids we used to throw pebbles at rocks close to the ground and watch it spark and the ground would burst into flames. I remember they tried to put up a fence to keep people out of the more polluted areas. They put up a fence alright…they put it up about 8 times by my count and each time the ground would eat through the metal fence posts and the fence would fall over.

Eventually they gave up.No one with any sense thought anyone would care about this land because it was essentially useless if you liked breathing and not glowing in the dark. But then came the politicians…

The land was cleaned up enough to make it look presentable. All the garbage heaps, old tires, and abandoned cars were removed but then they made the mistake of chopping the trees down. Crows had been living in this area of town pretty much undisturbed for decades. There were 10’s of thousands of them.Sure roads and buildings are nice but the land is still polluted and NOW all these crows needed a home and they found one.

They went to Churchville, the next town over, they crapped everywhere, chased animals and people, ate out of and made a mess out of all the garbage cans in town and were a general nuisance. The people yelled, the mayor gave speeches, the town council met and they decided to hire a guy who handled situations like this by using dogs and small explosives to drive the crows away. It worked and the crows left.

They went to Waterville, the next town over, they crapped everywhere, chased animals and people, ate out of and made a mess out of all the garbage cans in town and were a general nuisance. The people yelled, the mayor gave speeches, the town council met and they decided to hire a guy who handled situations like this by using dogs and small explosives to drive the crows away. It worked.

The people yelled, the mayor gave speeches, the town council met and they decided to hire a guy who handled situations like this by using dogs and small explosives to drive the crows away.

And so it went and still goes to this day. The crows every year from one town to the next and then back again.

Sometimes I think about the crows, my town, Waterville, and Churchville and the stupid politicians developing useless land when I see these “troop surges” to clean up towns of insurgents and I wonder how many years they’ll be pushing crows around in Iraq. The people feel powerless, the mayors like it because they look like they’re doing something, and the guy moving the crows around keeps making a fortune every year for something that’s never going to end.

Was it all worth the money and aggravation that the crows caused? If only they thought about the long term problems before hand and not the short term $$$ the politicians put in their pockets, none of this ever would have happened. Sort of sounds like Iraq huh?

Anyone want to buy some vacant buildings on polluted land covered in crow shit? How about a $500 million embassy in the middle of a civil war torn nation? If so I know where you can go to get them.

  99. Roger_Roger says:

#91 Walmart green push includes suppliers abroad INCLUDING CHINA. Any and all companies that are suppliers to Walmart are being asked and somewhat forced to get greener. This can only be looked at as a good thing when talking about countries like China. They of course have the option to stop doing business with Walmart, but that is hardly possible for their bottom line. Of course this crowd with dismiss or simply forget about this extremely positive news. In the end of the day, your “fight” against walmart shows your true S O C I A L I S T values.

Why can’t you let we the people decide wether to shop at Walmart or not? Why are you so scared of this company? If they are in fact so bad and hurt communities blah blah, people in those communities certainly won’t shop there and will continue to shop at the smaller community stores, right? The idea that Walmart destroys small business’ is completely false. We the people destroy those companies by not shopping at them because WE CHOOSE WALMART. It floors me how many here are eager to dictate and force the standard American to shop and spend money only at companies you approve of. Why not let the american public hash this out with our own shopping decisions?

This is a company afterall that saves American’s money and is eagerly advancing as the leading large company in America to fight Global Warming.

  100. Zooey says:

    Roger_Roger

Yes I’m a socialist because I formed my own corporation and give my employees full benefits.

Where’s the link that Walmart is pushing China’s suppliers to go green. Have you seen pictures of China lately. Try National Geographic.
Walmart goes into small towns that have Mom & Pop business and drives them out of towns. These small businesses historically have given higher wages and benefits to employees and so their costs even if they could by merchandise at the same rate would be higher.
Walmart goes in with loss leaders to make sure their prices are lower. Then they advertise extensively to make sure they drive the small business out. Once the other businesses are gone they stop advertising. Thereby driving local newspapers out of business because the other business are closed. And all those people who now have no money can’t go spend less of it at Walmart can they.
Of course you neocons love minimum wage and enslaving the masses with them while that top !1% cashes in corporate profits.
Many of us believe in doing unto others even if that means we have slightly less cash in our pockets.
Of course you don’t. And I hope you’re in that top 1% or you’re incredibly stupid.

And that somehow makes it okay?

    Comment by TheToonGuy — March 14, 2007 @ 10:01 am

Of course it doesn’t make it okay. The same problems I heard about the VA when I entered active duty in the early 80s are still happening today. Honestly, I don’t know if the problem is related to any specific administration or just gross mismanagement of the VA.

After what I have been through with those clowns, I am starting to think that it is purely gross mismanagement.

Unfortunately, I think the buffoons on Capitol Hill on both sides of the aisle are not really serious about reforming the VA. They are more interested in propping up their name for the next election than honestly doing something for the people who risked their lives for this country.

  113. Joe Schmo says:

I am not sure what to think of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. The reason I say that is because I was an E-8 when I retired. The E-8 part of me says that lifestyle is not conducive to good order and discipline. Another part of me says what is the big deal?

I knew folks while on Active Duty whom I suspected of being gay. They all got dressed the same way the rest of us do. One leg at a time. They only want to serve their country the same way heterosexuals do.

Who are we to deny them that privilege? I know that a great deal of my friends who are still in will disagree with me, and that is fine. They can disagree.

DEFECTIVE FLOOD-CONTROL PUMPS AND A FAILURE TO USE PLASTIC CLAY INSTEAD OF PLAIN EARTH-DIRT, WHICH WILL CRUMBLE AGAIN WHEN THE DAMS ARE FLOODED, WHEREAS PLASTIC CLAY WILL HOLD UP!!!!!
    Comment by Raymond Funamoto — March 14, 2007 @ 3:55 pm

    Raymond,
I appreciate your passion, I really do. But, where did you read about “plastic clay?” When I learn the context, I will know for sure, but until then, I suspect that usage of “plastic” is an engineering usage that is somewhat different from common usage.

From your usage, I suspect you believe that the proposed clay levee fill is synthetic. That is incorrect (unless there is a synthetic clay that I’ve never heard of). Plastic, in this context, probably refers to a property of the clay, not its composition – in other words, “plastic clay” is a natural material that might be what you call “earth-dirt.”

Engineers use two terms to describe how materials perform under stress. Simple explanation number one: All materials deform under stress. When a material rebounds to its original shape after the load is removed, it is said to be “elastic.” When a material remains deformed after the load is removed, it is called “plastic.”

Clay usually exhibits plastic performance, which makes it a poor fill material. Another property makes it a good component of levee fill: clay is made of very small soil particles – so small that water cannot penetrate its voids. (Landfills are lined with clay for this reason.) Another simplified explanation: Angular sand grains lock together to resist the loads, but the voids between the grains are large enough for water to flow. When clay and sand are used together, the clay grains fill the sand’s voids, improving the compaction of the sand and stopping the water, so we get the best properties of both.

Final simple explanation: The failed levees were either a lot of sand, or a lot of clay, or not enough of either. Why the Corps of Engineers didn’t know this or failed to account for it is still mysterious.
